Chips and salsa were good -- the salsa was really tasty! We added a small cheese dip, almost $7 for a small serving "bowl". Liked it but for that price, maybe a larger portion would be good? We ordered the steak fajitas to split. Portion was nice for two of us, able to make about 5 with the items. Homemade flour tortillas were nice. The refried beans were a bit bland and we don't each much rice. Overall slightly under 4 stars, maybe 3.8. Staff were a bonus! read more

Stopped in for dinner on a Tuesday evening around 8:00pm. First impression upon arrival was "sweet patio". The restaurant is inside an old house with a massive wrap around porch featuring plenty of covered outdoor seating. As we walked to the hostess stand we noticed a sign stating they lost their liquor license. This was a massive let down as I was excited for a margarita. We almost left but decided to give it a shot. Inside was a pretty standard Mexican restaurant decor. The place was clean and looked to be well kept. Our server didn't seem too excited about life and was a bit slow and unenthusiastic. Brought our chips and salsa pretty quick and took our drink order. When he came back with our waters and soda we placed our food order. I wanted a Carne Asada which I was told is actually no longer available. This is completely bonkers to me. A staple dish at any Mexican restaurant. So I ordered something else that has skirt steak in it. Super confusing how they couldn't do that particular dish. Overall the food we ordered was actually really good. A smidgen under four stars. What this restaurant has going for it is a shaded porch, strong drinks, and a waiter (whose name escapes me) who was smiley, charming and made me feel better on a difficult day. (Note my large margarita!) While there are Mexican restaurants I favor, I'm always up to trying new places. We had been in the building years ago when it was occupied by a wonderful Eastern European eatery, and I was curious about its replacement. While I liked El Taco's salsa and chips -- the salsa has zing! -- my fajitas were only three stars. Chicken was nicely grilled and seasoned as requested, but not well trimmed. (Some cartilage and grizzle.) Neither the rice nor my beans were anything special. I didn't think T's cochinita pibil (braised pork shoulder) looked appealing, but he said it was delicious. The black beans that came with it were infinitely better than the refried ones on my plate. Sometimes ambience -- in this case a comfortable outdoor setting -- wins out. SO MUCH YUM! We stopped in on a Thursday evening and a hostess brought us to a table outside. She was very friendly! Gabby was our server and she was EXCELLENT! Very sweet, professional, prompt, attentive. Very cute restaurant. We sat outside (we had great weather!) and I loved all of the cute boho pendant lights hanging from the ceiling. Gabby brought us chips & salsa & also our drinks. The Hawaiian drink had rum and a pretty pink flower. If you like sweet drinks, you should try it! Food & drinks were so delicious - the chicken soup was great. I ordered the smallest size and it came out in a giant bowl! I definitely had enough to bring home. The steak azteca tacos were soooo good - very flavorful and juicy. Absolutely recommend! Next time I want to try the fish tacos. My brother had the esquites and they were VERY good! My husband tried the fajitas and Omg - big yes for me. My son tried the kid's burrito and it was a very large portion. He had plenty to take home for leftovers. I'd love to tell you the food and drinks were great but unfortunately the hospitality aka service was so awful on arrival our party of 6 walked out never to return. It was clear the restaurant was crashing and the manager had zero control of the restaurant. We were directed to the bar to get a drinks while we waited for our table. The bartender wouldn't even serve us a glass of water... a server told us we couldnt be at the bar...so we asked for the manager who told us we couldn't be at the bar because the bartender had to focus on table service...the place was more than half empty. Saw this place while taking a wrong turn driving to another restaurant and it looked intriguing even if the Yelp ratings aren't that high. Easy parking. Arriving shortly after 11:30 on a Wednesday, I find the business mostly empty - only one booth occupied. A couple of other parties came in while I was there, so it seems that the lunch rush is small or much later than I imagine. I took a booth and enjoyed an unspectacular view out the back of the restaurant, although there was the spectacle of a tough-looking kitty prowling around looking like it wanted to beat up someone or something. Along with the room I was in, which included the bar at one end, they had another and also a large semi-enclosed patio. Lots of space. Maybe more than I saw. Polite, quick service throughout. I was here for tacos but they have all the standards. No website menu that I could find. But first, the obligatory basket of chips and salsa appeared almost immediately. The salsa. Wonderful. Just the right amount of flavor to picante. Good chips, too. You don't get a lot of salsa so if you're not solo, best ask for more, I think. Asada, barbacoa, chorizo tacos all excellent. They are large enough that three will fill most people up without the need for rice & beans on the side, which don't come with the taco trio. Each taco comprised mostly meat - no rabbit food filler here. Tortillas seemed freshly made although I probably can't discern the difference. Unlike the salsa roja, the salsa verde that comes with the tacos disappoints. Not much flavor, I thought. But the tacos really didn't need anything else (I still dumped roja and verde on them because that's what I do). I think this is a fine lunch spot and I'm going to drag my co-workers here if I can peel them away from their computers to eat lunch. read more

I was pleasantly surprised! I had always driven by here and wondered about it. I finally looked at the Yelp photos and it looked authentic! It sure is. Has authentic taqueria type food, but also 'sit down' traditional plates. I had no clue they'd been here 17 years!! Wow! I usually order chicken street tacos or a torta at taquerias, but decided to try the grilled fish taco plate ($13- 3 tacos and sides). Super good! It came with a side plate of guacamole, pico, corn, and mexican rice. Very filling! Taking lots home. I also ordered the small chicken tortilla soup ($5.95). It was sooo good and a huge portion! It was very authentic and had the shredded chicken, rice, avocado, stewed tomatoes, onions, lime and tortilla strips on the side. I asked for cilantro to garnish with. My son loved his single chicken taco ($2.25). We asked for just chicken and cheese on a soft taco. They melted it and he liked that! Not the norm at taquerias. The music playing is great. A mix of bachata and salsa! Great outside patio in front, and a few tables in the front grass w nice umbrellas and mosaic planters and decorations. Or they have a covered patio on the side as well. The inside looks cute though. Lots of parking on the side. Waiters were very attentive and friendly. There are a lot of things on the menu I want to try! We will be back! My friends and I came to El Taco Azteca tonight for a fun dinner to celebrate finals week being over with. (This was my first time coming here) We all got a different dish, and my boyfriend got the Burrito Chipotle (chicken). He also had a tropicalita margarita. He took a few SMALL sips of the margarita and then ate his dinner. Within minutes of eating his dinner his stomach was starting to hurt. He felt bloated and sweaty. I'm not even kidding maybe 15-20 minutes after finishing his meal and sitting around the table, he was as white as a ghost. He did not finish the drink, nor drink enough (at all) for it to have been the margarita making him sick. He had to go outside toward the entrance/patio area and unfortunately got sick over the railing. While he was outside, he was going in and out of consciousness, and a waiter approached him and asked if he had hit his head or if they needed to call someone. When we first arrived we were so excited because the restaurant seemed so cool and upbeat. But we will not be returning. We are so upset with this experience and will be contacting the restaurant tomorrow. We then went on yelp and google and saw reviews of people getting food poisoning, and that they are cooking their meats and then reheating them, which is insane because that can cause bacteria to grow which leads to food poisoning if not heated to 165°. This place is the absolute best Mexican restaurant in the greater Atlanta area. We are Californians who relocated here 10 years ago. We missed the traditional Mexican fare, and were over the moon when we found this gem of a restaurant. We are now regulars, and have even had them cater for us. The food is consistently great (so are the margaritas). We HIGHLY RECOMMEND as a restaurant and as a caterer. Katie, Miguel, Vanessa, Albert & their team are incredible. It's been a while since I wrote a review. Yelp reminded me that we finally ate at El Taco Azteca Bar & Grill last week. we had wanted to go for many months prior to COVID. When COVID struck we weren't sure how well independent restaurants would do with social distancing and other 'normal" things we do now. So we waited. We arrived and waited outside by a table with a sign that told us to wait for a server. Our first impression as to how they would handle COVID cleaning issues were relieved at this point. The rest of the visit was the same. Azteca offers their menu via a QR code and the tables are spread apart a lot. Our server was very attentive and knowledgeable. I'm sorry I don't remember his name but he did a good job. The food was good. We're on a budget so we ordered lesser priced items and no specialty items or fajitas etc. It wasn't great, but a few items on the menu look like they might be awesome. All-in-all, a 4-star review. The service was great and the food was ok. I liked the thin tortilla chips and salsa a lot though. I suspect when we return and order one of their specialty items, sa long as the servcice is the same or better, the future visit may merit 5-stars. read more

Overall not a good experience. Chips were broken in small pieces with our queso dip and salsa. Food was meh at best. Shrimp tacos has pieces of shrimp and had more tomato salsa than anything. I was really just disappointed in this place. The food was high in price & mediocre at best. The service wasn't all that great either. Never in my life have I paid $2 extra for a small container of sour cream. My father in law ordered cheese dip which was only $1 cheaper than his entire meal (shrimp nachos). The cheese dip was also extremely watery & tasted like it was made from dehydrated powder based queso mix. An entire pitcher of bottom shelf margarita was $22. I had a virgin margarita (6 months pregnant) and that cost $7. That's what I pay for a REAL margarita elsewhere. The food was not fresh, like it had been sitting in the window. It cost us $70 for a taco salad, the margaritas I mentioned, and 3 basic tacos. The server also only came back one time to check on our table, forgot to bring my brother his drinks after the rest of the table had theirs, and seemed like he had better things to do. The menu is also 100% digital by QR code which is fine for people with smartphones, but my mother-in-law had to borrow a phone to see the menu & was never offered a physical menu. Unexpected is the first word that comes to mind! When we stumbled upon this old house turned Mexican restaurant, I assumed the food would be mediocre at best. I'm so happy to say I was wrong! Fresh chips and salsa (with a good amount of heat), flavorful tacos with tender meat. Their white cheese dip was delicious and the chimichangas were super flavorful! Went there again and recommended for my BF to get the Camarones Al Mojo De Ajo because when I got it 2 yrs ago, it was awesome! Was disappointed to see the portion shrunk so much to be charged $13.95 for it. He said it tasted great but it was 12 small shrimp total. It was more like a snack. My mushroom quesadilla was stuffed full served more like a taco than a quesadilla. Guacamole salad had very little guac and was mostly lettuce. Also the water I got with my meal had a soapy flavor as if the glass perhaps was not rinsed fully. Disappointed in this visit and wallet is sad. read more
