"If you want authentic Mexican go to El Taco" a friend from Denver told me. Good advice. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Inside is like an old run down diner. A few booths and a counter top. Outside seating is the way to go weather permitting.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Extremely friendly staff. Service lightning quick. Prices fair. I had the marinated pork taco plate. 3 tacos on double corn tortilla with refried beans and rice. Tacos were excellent. Beans good, rice a bit bland. As much as I enjoyed my tacos the beef burrito smothered in green chili sauce was even better. Need to come back and get this myself. Last dish was a Special breakfast - 2 fried eggs, rice, beans ham bacon, potatos and 2 flour tortillas. Hit the spot. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Found it interesting how busy they were on a Thursday for an early lunch including local police stopping by for a bite.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] There is nothing fancy about this place but the food is authentic and very good.

First time. The menu is above the counter with no explanations. I ordered the chile relleno combination plate with rice & refried beans for + 2 flour tortillas for $16.10; I added a bottle of Senorial Sangria sparkling soda. It was ok. Finally! Some hole in the wall tacos. Friendly staff and the tacos were filing. I added lettuce, onion and tomatoes to the tacos. 3 Taco Plate: 10/10. I ordered the beef steak tacos but now that I'm looking at the picture I think they gave me chicken? lol clearly I didn't mind because I didn't even notice! The chicken was moist and shredded. The rice was fluffy and the beans were creamy.

If it wasn't for the awards proudly displayed on the walls, you would never know how prestigious this unassuming restaurant is - until that first taste hits your mouth. In 2020, El Taco de Mexico was named one of America's Classics by the James Beard Foundation. [[HIGHLIGHT]]As you step in, a painted menu is above the diner counter with chalkboard pieces covering the ever-changing prices of their offerings.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Several women are in the back busily cooking up orders as they are placed. You may have to wait at the counter for one to come take your order, but don't fret, it is worth the wait. I highly recommend the chile relleno burrito smothered in green chile with salsa and onions. This all comes wrapped up in a tortilla - the delicious green chile relleno stuffed with asedero cheese, rice, beans, onions, and salsa. Expertly folded and wrapped to be smothered with the green chile sauce. You will be handed a fork, knife, and napkin when you order. All are necessary to eat the burrito that Food & Wine once named, "the breakfast dish of your dreams." I beg to differ, it's the any time of the day dish of your dreams.

Came here to try the burrito that I had a famous James Bears designation. We went during the lunch hour when there was no one else in the store. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The area is located in the arts district, which I felt was quite dead on a weekday afternoon.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I shared one smothered chile relleno burrito with my cousin. I thought it was strange that asking for it smothered had such an extra cost. It was around $18 for this burrito. I'm glad we shared it because it would've caused a food coma if we had one each. I wish they put on more sauce--I mean we paid extra, right? It was my first time having chile relleno at all. The breading sometimes fell apart from the pepper, but it still picked up good flavor. We washed it down with a horchata which was delicious. It wasn't too sweet, nor watery. It tasted rich, just like a good horchata. The service was awful. My expectations were the bare minimum already, but they were actively ignoring us despite having no one else in the store. My cousin asked for water three times to no avail. I went up and sternly asked for it; I finally got a cup of water for her after 20 minutes. All in all, this was okay. I don't think I would come back to it. We went out of our way from the art museum as my cousin is a James Beard enthusiast, but the overall experience was lackluster.

Such good food! This place is a staple of deliciousness in the Santa Fe Art area of Denver. Constantly on the list of best Mexican food around by multiple reviewers, El Taco has maintained their same menu for years. I had the chile relleno burrito- highly recommended by many food reviewers- and apparently everyone else has heard of this recommendation as it was constantly ordered by other patrons during our meal as well. I found this place in a tik tok search of good Mexican food in Denver. While several other locations came up, I decided on this one because the vibe in the pictures reminded me of a "hole in the wall" type place back home that I love. I assumed as a result I would get some pretty good, authentic Mexican, and I wasn't exactly wrong. I enjoyed everything I ate... for the most part. I ordered three pastor tacos with cilantro and onion, rice and beans, chips and salsa and a lemonade mixed with Jamaica and paid about $30 or so. I also asked for a small side of the green chili sauce they use to smother burritos, etc. which I believe I was given? That leads me to this point: there was very little price transparency, mostly because I was not given a receipt or offered one. I don't know if I paid for a taco plate or three tacos separately from rice and beans (R&Bs). The taco plate seems to be the cheaper option as R&Bs alone were almost $8; rookie move on my part if I was charged separately because I would just get 2 more tacos for that price and forego R&Bs especially considering the portions of the R&Bs were so small (while the R&Bs were good). The tacos were also small but pretty good. The small cup of green chili was the star. It was spicy, not the "I can't enjoy it" type of spicy, but definitely an unexpected kick and great flavor. I see why people get their orders slathered in it. I would order differently if I went back. However, I sat at the counter while I ate and was able to see them make most of the orders. Generally speaking all the portions were small, i.e. small portions of meat in the burritos, etc. To that point, the chips and salsa were the most disappointing. I don't know why it's sold as chips and salsa because the salsa is literally a small side of salsa you would get to put on your tacos. It was a liquid consistency, not chunky. I asked the lady who took my order for a cup of pico de gallo while I was eating and she gave me a cup of cilantro and onion (no additional charge). I poured the salsa in that for a little something, but that's ridiculous I had to do that. With that being said, the chips were good. I'm not sure if they are made in house but they taste like it; however, again, a smallish portion. All in all, the food was tasty and my drink mix was bomb. Nothing I had was bad, but it definitely wasn't giving "hole in the wall" prices! I would be interested in seeing if there are other Mexican places in Denver that offer better value for a similar experience. I left a few dollars for tip if that means anything but honestly the tip is calculated in the price.

I was not blown away by this place. The food was just mediocre, and the service was awful. Once I arrived, I wasn't greeted or acknowledged in any capacity. I sat at a table once I noticed one of the women working running to tables, but they provided me no service. So, I eventually resorted to standing at the counter for a few minutes, watching multiple workers behind said counter pass me by until one finally took my order. They weren't busy, by the way. I placed a simple order of steak tacos, and requested no onions. Guess what? Tacos came with onions. Fine, no big deal, I guess. However, what I could not look past was the woman who took my order placing my order on the counter, and making me get up to grab my food. I'm by no means lazy, but I observed this woman run food to other tables, pick food up, etc, and now I'm the only one picking up my own food? If this is a pick-everything-up-at-the-counter place, then they need to make that clear. They also need to remove "salsa" from their menu. What you receive is literally their hot sauce in a small bowl. So, in other words, you spend $1 on what is technically not salsa for them to pour red hot sauce into a bowl. By the way, the red hot sauce is everywhere in the restaurant, and it's free, so... Overall, the food was nothing special. If the food was absolutely out of this world, I could look past the subpar service, but when both are bad? No thanks. read more

My husband and I went in this place because he really wanted to eat Mexican food so I didn't have choice to go with him. I'm not a big fan of Mexican food. This Mexican Restaurant was very small in the inside and it had outside patio with few tables and chairs. When I ordered on the counter, I asked some questions to the person because I didn't how they cook the food; however, the person didn't understand English and only spoke a little English so she needed to call someone to speak with me, but the other person didn't know how to translate it in English so I ended up ordering marinated pork that was in a platter. It was a little bit spicy and it was okay. I was just so disappointed that the person didn't speak English. read more

Ordered the taco trio platter, choosing the beef, fried pork, and marinated pork tacos. While all of them were good, the marinated pork was by far my favorite. I had mine prepared with all of the toppings, which includes a hot red sauce and some onion. The platter includes rice and beans for a reasonable ~$10. My friends ordered the smothered green chili special burrito, which is a repeat favorite for them. The burrito is huge! I wish there was a bit more seating during the winter here, but otherwise it is a good, quick place to stop for lunch. read more

My food came out way before my wife, I did not get silverware. The food was lukewarm, and not that great...I did eat all 3 tacos though, they were pretty puny. Havnt got the bill yet, but I'm sure it's not worth it. read more

No way this is worth 4 stars. Luke warm, greasy green chili (no spice at all), very little cheese on top that isn't melted, nothing but gristle in the steak. Could go on and on - this place is AWFUL and I love hole-in-the-wall joints. Try la Familia Taqueria or los Carboncitos .. both in the Highlands. read more

Hello. or should I say, Hola!. You have just left Denver and are now in Mexico. Put your best high school Spanish! We couldn't figure out what was going on, went inside and ordered, then sat down- they brought it to us, then we went back in a paid after we ate. No clue exactly what the correct process was. However, the tacos were delicious and authentic and cheap. Yummy! read more

Whoop! Whoop! I *love* a great dive with excellent food. We stopped in yesterday afternoon to grab some take-away. It was fairly busy for 2:30 PM on a Sunday, but the service was friendly and quick. The tongue taco and the shredded beef tacos were both excellent! The husband had a really nice tamale meal -- which I believe was totally enhanced by my swinging around the takeway bag as we were walking 4 blocks down the street causing his delicious refried beans and salsa to get strewn around on top of his tamale. I'll definitely be back to try to the sweetcheeks taco! read more

After working a block away for over 6 years I finally gave this place a try last week. I had 3 tacos and while they looked small once I unwrapped them they all had plenty of good flavors and meat on them. I think the total for 3 was about $5.50. I do wish the menu on the wall had more information since my lack of Spanish was against me. I'll be back. Hopefully before another 6 years passes. read more

Food was very good! Burritos were great sizes and amazing taste! Only giving 4 stars because of the service. They were some what timely and got the order correct. But I showed up before a big group of people and they some how got served before me when I had been waiting already. Not great service imo but luckily the food will definitely have me coming back. read more

Yeah this place isn't good like the reviews 10 dollars for a breakfast burrito? A extra 6 dollars to switch from bacon to asada or other meats no extra salsa too put on the burrito no thank you I'll take my business somewhere next time then To top it off i I asked for no onions and still put onions in the burrito why ask if you want onions or not if you're just gonna put them in anyways read more

Starving after a day trip and accidentally found this authentic, tiny, bustling place. Clean inside and an apparent local favorite. Th walls are covered in accolades and the ladies behind the counter are efficient. Figure out what you want from the extensive menu above and move along. They have all imported drinks and make their green chili daily. Definitely not a let down. The table we chose had a bottle of hot sauce that was truly . Very small parking lot but in an art filled district of the city that makes the whole experience worthwhile. read more

You can tell this is authentic walking in the door. The food speaks volumes. It's green Chile was unparalleled. This is the best burrito I have ever had. You need to go here, this is the best burrito in Denver. Always a line out the door so prepare yourself - what comes great always has a wait. read more

El Taco De Mexico has become El Taco de mi corazon. I love the walk up counter and prompt service. Very authentic Mexican street food, and just as delicious. I tried a variety of tacos but the ones of mention for me were the cheek tacos and the shredded beef tacos. The dude next to me ordered a huge ($6) burrito and it looked amazing so I'll have to try that next time. If you like Mexican food or just food in general, come check out this place! read more

When I came to pick up my food the ladies inside were working and dancing to the music playing in the background. It's always nice when the people preparing your food also love their job . came here on a Wednesday afternoon after a killer mtb ride on the front range so I was starving! The menu is up on a huge board above the counter and I was spoiled for choice so I asked the lady what she recommended. She suggested the Taco Plate which I got and Mtn Dew to drink. I was asked if I wanted onions and salsa, I said yes. Cost was about $11. Food came out fast and it looked so good I took a pic :o) The salsa had a real kick and I got some extra to pour on the beans and rice. Next time I will try a chicken burrito or maybe the chili relenos because I will deffo be back! read more

Made it a point to get some tacos today since it was a bit cold and gloomy. My wife and I got 4 tacos to go but a couple seats at the counter opened up and they were nice enough to change things over to dine in. We had the cheek meats and pastor tacos and we loved them. Washed it down with a Piña Agua Fresca. We will be back to try their other dishes but glad we stopped in today. The place was packed and it stayed busy the entire time we were there. It's a small dining area with a counter but it's worth the wait and they got the food out timely. They do have patio seating so I think a trip here during the summer will be a must! read more

Really delicious, great selection that you'll drive across town for. I love the chili relleno burrito. Carnitas is less crispy than because it is saucy but it is really delicious. Not my favorite green chile in town - not spicy enough for me - but still great flavor. I've had great service every time I have been there. read more

I am not typically one to complain, and I feel somewhat bad because it seemed as though they were just severely under staffed but we went there last night around 6:30pm and I ordered three tacos, and my mom got a burrito. It took about 25 minutes for the order to be ready and I was very underwhelmed by the amount of meat in the taco. I would typically be satisfied after 3-4 street tacos and I would guess it would take about 6-7 to feel full/satisfied. I wrote this because my husband really bases his decision on "how big a portion is" so if you are someone like that I would say skip the tacos and just get a smothered burrito. The green chili was good, and my mom really enjoyed her burrito. (She got the breakfast burrito with bacon and no eggs) I also placed a to-go order, and I would recommend checking before your leave because I was missing a taco and didn't realize it until I got home (rookie mistake) I would say def try this place out to give them a shot- but I wish I had known about the amount of meat in the taco before hand, so just wanted to let fellow helpers know. read more

It's very hard to find good Mexican places and places that are very authentic especially after living in Mexico for a month or so. They're always wearing gloves washing their hands frequently wearing mask it's the only Mexican food place I find delightful read more

Walked inside only to smell one of the most putrid smells....wouldn't even expect that at a ball park bathroom. Looked at the food and might eat the chips. Beef tacos and bean and cheese tacos look horrible. This place needs help. read more

We have been coming here on and off for years. But, lately it's been a go to spot for us. It's a total dive, but we love it. Why? IDK... The fast, friendly service? The patio for Denver's warm, sunny winter days? Yes. But, mostly the awesome food. Cabeza tacos, tamales, chicken tostadas, chile relleno burritos. Oh and the rice and beans. Yum. You can't go wrong. And there is so much more to choose from. Tortas, chillaquilles, posole... to name a few. Be sure to ask for more salsa. It's delicious and there's no such thing as too much salsa. Enjoy! read more

This place is just fantastic. I always get a taco plate with al pastor, carne asada, and carnitas. It is hands down my favorite taco place in Denver. My only complaint is that they pre-mix the onions and cilantro. So if you're cursed with the gene that makes cilantro taste like soap (like me), you'll have to add onions when you get home. Aside from that, this place is a must-try. read more

I read the reviews and looked at the pictures, what else can you do when trying a new place? So the wife and I set off to get a couple al pastor burritos. Everything was fine until it came time to eat the burritos. First bite - Almost all tortilla, okay, maybe it was just poorly wrapped or the innards shifted during my drive home. Second bite - Odd, is this all beans? Third bite - A little bit of al pastor, but still lots of beans. Fourth bite - A blend of all the ingredients, finally I can judge this. Assessment, bland, like really bland, the al pastor had ZERO spice. We keep eating the burritos and looking at each other as if there was something wrong with us, but no, these burritos were just bad, I could have easily went to Taco Bell or Del Taco and had a better meal. read more

This has been a taco landmark in Denver for some time. They used to be on my list when in the area, but my last two visits have left me wondering what's happened. The cheek meat and carnitas were just not up to par. Under seasoned and not a lot of filling on the past few stops. I'll be sticking to the federal taco cartel going forward. read more

I don't know why I haven't written about this place before now. I've been addicted to their food for many years. My son and I refer to it as heaven. When we get off the 6th Ave freeway and pass Santa Fe, one of us will inevitably comment that we're just one block from heaven. Be forewarned - this is not a take-everyone-in-the-family-out-to-eat and linger for a couple hours over post-dinner margaritas kind of Mexican restaurant. There is a dining counter and about 5 booths that seat four people maximum. There is no liquor (or beer). There is no chips and salsa. There is only absolutely authentic, absolutely delicious Mexican food. Random observations (despite which the five star rating is warranted). 1. If you sit in a booth no one will wait on you. Order at the counter and watch for your food to be placed on the counter when ready. Sometimes you will be notified that your food is waiting. Sometimes not. 2. The jackhammer sound from the grill is not construction in progress. It is a meat cleaver wielded expertly by one of the cooks chopping cows into bite-size pieces. 3. The prices on the menu boards above the counter are, apparently, approximations. I order take out (the exact same thing) a couple times a month and I don't think I've ever paid the same price twice. 4. Don't quibble about #3. 5. Speak clearly. If you know a bit of Spanish - use it when ordering. The reason the Mexican food is authentic is because everyone behind the counter is authentic. 6. Their menudo is only available on weekends, and they often run out by midday Sunday. If you like menudo, you'll love theirs - but get there on Saturday or early Sunday. 7. Always ask for extra salsa on the side. The more you eat there the greater your tolerance for the heat will get. It's worth building your tolerance. 8. Skip this place on First Friday (art show nights on the first Friday of each month). Too crowded. read more

My mouth will be watering from the time you mention it until I'm sitting there with a fresh hot plate of perfect huevos rancheros in front of me. This place doesn't look like much, but the kitchen (which you can look right into while you are sitting at the counter) is immaculate, the food generally comes out quickly, and the price is right! I had a chile relleno burrito, which I thought was pretty good. Decent price for a big burrito. I'd recommend skipping the drinks as they are way more than they should be. Stopped by for lunch. Although it kind of seems like it, this is not a fast food place. It is a very small cafe. This place recently won Best Green Chile from somewhere, so I wanted to check it out. I had a chile relleno burrito, which I thought was pretty good. Decent price for a big burrito. I'd recommend skipping the drinks as they are way more than they should be. After hearing about this place about a thousand times I figured I'd give it a try since I may not get another chance (leaving Denver). So I tried it on my last day and it was awesome! There's a special place in hell for people who mess up Mexican food but I think these guys have passed the test. The beef steak burrito took a little while but not long enough to make me look at my watch and was well worth it once it arrived. The atmosphere is really true to anywhere I've found in Mexico - some people have a safe zone issue with places with "too much" authenticity....... - so if your'e looking for a Disneyfied Mexican diner, keep searching. I have loved this little hole-in-the-wall ever since I first went here around 2002. The bean and cheese burrito smothered with green chili sauce (what I always get) tastes exactly the same as it has the first time I had it, and when I lived out of state for a few years I would literally dream about it. It's true, the women behind the counter are not particularly chatty or friendly, but they serve great food and the fact that they're all business is part of the charm in my opinion. The Best street tacos in Denver! I love the steak and pork tacos. Also, the Chile Rellenos Burrito is incredible!! It has rice, beans, cheese. Get it smothered with the best green chili in town. Also, if you want you can add protein, I add chicken sometimes. It's an extra cost for that. But it's so big sometimes I can only eat half and the rest tastes just as good the next day.
