I was actually very surprised at how great this place was! The salsa has absolutely no heat to it, so that kind of was a turn off, but it had an excellent flavor! I ordered the enchiladas rancheras with black beans and it was awesome! Homemade tortillas, and the desserts were killer. Great little gem! read more

Real Mexican here, frm San Diego and have been eating the good stuff my entire life. Lots to like here, a few things were lame, but the lady in the corner rolling out the HOT, FRESH flour tortillas, makes even the lame things good. Beautifully decorated, bathrooms clean, plentiful parking and lots of staff for our recent lunch. Our young server Eric was awesome, friendly and attentive, not something you find often in many Missouri restaurants. Tortilla chips were light and not greasy and although the salsa was tasty, a newborn baby could've eaten it. The beans are freshly made, NOT from the can and the rice tasted like a mix. My friend had chicken fajitas, definitely a pass on that. For being in the middle of central Missouri, its a 4 **** in my book. Decent for San Diego, very good for MO. read more

Dee-licious!!! I moved away from Missouri several years ago, but I ALWAYS have to make time for At Least one meal here each time I return!!

There are three primary areas in which I rate a restaurant. 1. The food 2. environment 3. service The food here is excellent. Very flavorful and usually a very consistent product. This does not salvage the restaurant from poor customer service. They gave me the wrong order recently and treated us very rude when we asked for an exchange. We made a carry out order. We got home. I discovered we had the wrong order after my wife had left to go get something else. I called on the my wife on the cell phone and told her to stop by El Tapatio and get our actual order and the difference in price since what we ordered was cheaper. They argued vehemently with my wife. Hey, it was a mistake we just want our food and the difference. The other dinners are at our house an she didn't plan on going all the way back for them. They refused. At one point, my wife was told they get scammed a lot. My wife asked if they were insinuating we were scamming them. They of, course replied no, but continued to refuse to give us the correct meals. The owner finally decided to drive to our house to make sure we didn't eat any of the original meals(the incorrect items) before exchanging meals for the correct order. Yes, she drove to our house. I guess they still didn't trust us. What did they do with the incorrect orders we returned? I don't know. This is after eating here loyally for years. I won't be back for some time. Forever is a long time, but I will say for some time. 3. environment, nothing special, reasonably clean. Treating customers with respect means a lot to me. I have been a patron of this restaurant for 15 plus years. It seems a year before their move, the customer service started going down hill. Now, after the move? It's gotten worse. The staff isn't nearly as friendly as they used to be and the food isn't as good either. I have been to their new location a total of four times and the last was through the drive through. Salsa was DELICIOUS. Mac & cheese was not good. My chile relleno had something wrong with it... i think it was leftover and refried. It tasted like dog food along the edge, but the inside tasted okay. Overall, most of the food was edible. The servers were more interested in sitting at a table playing with their phones...won't go back. read more

My husband and I just moved here from Colorado. Does that make us experts on Mexican cuisine? Not necessarily. But, we were quite privileged to have access to some really great Mexican food there. Moving here, we knew it would be harder to find, but were still hopeful. The reviews for El Tapatio were better than some we've seen, so we gave it a shot. And were completely disappointed. I will say that the chips were warm (and were the white corn, not yellow, which was great!) and the salsa was quite tasty. It wasn't spicy at all, which was a little disappointing, but the flavors were fresh and crisp. The rest? I so wanted to like it, but it really was not good at all. I tried a combo plate, thinking it would give me a little taste of a few things. The chile rellano, which is one of my favorite Mexican dishes, was terrible. Flavorless and dull. The chicken tamale and enchilada were no better. The chicken was dry and again, flavorless. The rice and beans weren't even good. The food was served lukewarm. My husband ordered the carnitas burrito. The flavor of the meat was actually good, but it was super dry. Unfortunately, the food wasn't the only problem. The service was dismal. We were hopeful at first, since the young server seemed attentive. But the second he took our order, he disappeared. I mean like, he vanished. Someone else brought our food and we never saw him again. No one checked on us at all. We must have finally looked like we were getting ready to bolt because someone else finally asked if we were ready for the check. Food - no thanks. Service - you can't even call it service. This is my least favorite Mexican restaurant in town. I would much rather eat taco bell than here. I've been one time and it was the worst experience I've ever had. If I were giving a review just on the Chef's Special, shredded beef, rice, beans, salsa, presentation, and service, I would give a 5. But the sopes were so bland that they were hard to eat. Our friend with us had the enchiladas and said they were just so-so. Food can be flavorful without being hot spicy if that is what concerns the restaurant's owners. I compare to Tortilleria Perches in Springfield. They make everything flavorful, especially the machaca. The only thing there that is spicy hot is the green salsa, which is the best I've had anywhere. Anyway, there's a lot to like at El Tapatio, but the food just needs more flavor and spicyness (for those of us who like it that way). read more

I'll give it two stars, because the service was fine and the workers were nice. I was very disappointed with the food. I like authentic Mexican food. I do not like Americanized Tex-Mex, and that is what they serve here. I ordered a tamale and chile relleno. I did not get a real tamale. I got some pork topped with some kind of cornbread stuff that was very thick. No corn husks. It didn't even taste like tamale. The chile relleno and the "tamale" were covered with so much melted cheese, that I had a hard time getting to the actual food. Authentic Mexican food is not smothered with yellow cheese. The beans were good and the rice was okay. I would love to see more authentic food on their menu. read more

We have been here 2 times as we pass through town. We actually made a special out of the way visit this time and we were sorely disappointed. The food was clearly old and reheated. Margaritas had all mix and no tequila. Service was great which is why they get 2 stars instead of only 1. Also when did it become appropriate to be served chips and salsa by a fund raising bb team? I am not from here --I don't need you hovering over me and begging for tips for your tournaments. Also was asked by a lady at the end of service to buy her homemade cakes. This was one of our go to places until COVID hit and we got take out for the first time. The salsa and refried beans were obviously water down. The refried beans were all over the rest of my food which made my chimichanga a soggy mess. Our mixed fajitas only had two pieces of shrimp and they replaced the steak with ground hamburger meat. They should of at least told us before we paid full price for all of this. I'm a strong believer in supporting local businesses in these hard times but not if they are going to ruin the quality of the food while still charging the same. read more

El Tap is the regular Friday night place. Quick, reasonable and they never stop bringing baskets of chips. Great place.

I ordered the monthly special salad, horrible choice. 90% white iceberg lettuce, and chicken looked like leavings from some other dish. Server did not apologize when I complained, saying that I should have said something when I first got it. He did take 50% off my bill, but never offered to even refill my water. I dislike spicy food, I always look for the least spicy option I can in Mexican restaurants. This is important to understand this review. My meal was bland. Horribly bland. My tamale was pork with no flavor. My beef enchilada wasn't dry but it was so bad it might as well have been. I ordered a chicken enchilada and got cheese, which was like melted plain cheese and that's all they did, no joke. Plain cheese in a Tortilla I received the chicken one finally and the plate was orange grease tinged. Except it wasn't grease. It was tomato sauce. Yes, the chicken tasted like canned tomato sauce. I have never seen that at a Mexican restaurant, ever. It didn't work. I cut the sauces on the plate and had it covered with white cheese sauce instead. Most places would put chilies and tomato in the sauce. They did neither and didn't have an alternative to this. It was the least flavorful white cheese I have had in years. Their rice was bland, like they cooked it in watery chicken stock and the beans tasted like canned. read more
