Our go to Mexican restaurant in St Matthews! It has a traditional hometown Mexican restaurant feel to it. We have been here multiple times and tried many different things. On a Friday evening it can be pretty busy with high school football crowd, but most other days throughout the week it's less busy. The service has been good and they are normally quick to get food out! We have also ordered online for carry out and the food was ready by the time we arrived, very easy process! Our go to is the chori-pollo. We also enjoy getting a margarita on Tuesday or Thursday when they have their specials!

I love that El Tarasco has been in my life for 12 years. I always have a need to come back to it, especially for its pleasant yet casual atmosphere, and (naturally) their margaritas. I figured I'd share my most recent experience, which was encouraged by a sudden urge for queso... Like, really good milky queso that lactose intolerants such as me find worth it and El Tarasco did not disappoint! Also, their chicken chimichanga is absolutely delicious, but OOPS I ate it before taking a picture - #sorrynotsorry.

Met a friend for supper here tonite, since where we planned to go their was a 45 minute wait. Considering it was cold tonight and we had to wait in our car we came here instead. I haven't been here in awhile and they have really cleaned the place up. New chairs, tables and repainted the whole place. Food was average, reasonably price. Service attentive. This place is dependable.

They have updated their menu! Staff was friendly and knowledgeable while we waited to place a to go order!

Taco salad, with option of chicken, ground beef or beef tips. It hides on the menu under the "Quesadillas" heading. My new fave!

Every neighborhood needs a few tasty, fast, and economical restaurants that hit the spot. A longtime resident of my "to try" list of restaurants, El Tarasco has made it into the coveted spot of neighborhood Mexican restaurant. I visited recently with a friend for a late dinner. After 9:00, it is hard to find a place that is open and still seating guests. At El Tarasco, we got right in to an empty booth where we were promptly given a bowl of tortilla chips and a bowl each of mild and hot salsa. Of course it's not a night out to your local Mexican joint without ordering margaritas. We went with traditional lime ones to start off the meal. The menu is considerable, and after deliberating, I finally decided on their chicken soup. It was a bowl full of hot, delicious chicken, avocado, cilantro, and rice on the bottom. I devoured it and didn't even care if I slurped! Service was attentive, and my only beef was that we didn't get waters with our meal -- too many tortilla chips means that water is a must! All in all, El Tarasco has moved from my list of "to try" restaurants to "to revisit".

The bar in the back. Rustic, but really cool.

I had been wanting to go for quite some time to try the Birria because I heard it is so amazing, and it really lived up to the Hype! Oh, did I mention they have the viral soft serve margaritas!?!?! I got the strawberry, it was so pretty, excellent presentation and absolutely delicious! I will say it was more like a dessert to me and I would have preferred to have it after my meal instead if before but that's just me. We got there between 6:30 and 7:00 and it was really busy, luckily our friends got there first and grabbed a table. They had already had a round of drinks while waiting on us but it took a while for anyone to come over to greet us or refill their drinks but again it was busy and everyone was helping everyone. We ended up splitting the birria platter and still had plenty of food to take home which we just ate last night as leftovers and were still absolutely fire!! I think the egg roll and quesadillas were my favorite over the tacos bc I love the melty cheese. I also ordered a small side of queso which was surprisingly a little spicy which I really enjoyed. They even surprised us when my BIL ordered a small margarita and it came out in a fish glass (see photo). It was so unexpected but also so cute at the same time ... it's really the little things like this that bring joy, okay? LOL This place was absolutely amazing and I can't wait to try it again.

We were leaving for the second leg of our trip and were running late, as usual. We decided to run across the street for a sit down lunch, what's another hour? Two smiling faces greeted us at the door. They offered a high top but my hip was absolutely not digging it nor a table up the flight of steep stairs. Once seated, we were greeted promptly and had water in front of us almost immediately. We each ordered soup and then a sandwich to share. I had the Sopa de Pollo . A hot bowl thick with thin noodles and lots of chunks of chicken. The chunks were too big to eat without being cut up which was a challenge in a bowl of broth. It was so hot that I had to wait a while to try it and even then had to blow on it. It was delicious. Unless the soup is your meal, order a cup. I still took nearly a pint of soup back with me. My husband ordered the Frijole Negro - a huge bowl of black beans that was served with a large pile of raw onions on top. Like the chicken soup, it was burn your mouth hot and a very large serving. He said it was good but he'd not order it again. Moving on to the sandwich. We had the Cubano. I'm not even going to describe it - just trust me - order the Cubano. Do not look at the rest of the menu - order the Cubano. Don't even bother looking at the ingredients, just order the Cubano. Have you ordered it yet? Do it already. The Cubano is huge. We split one half and had the other when we arrived at our next stop. Do consider that we had soup first; otherwise, we'd have eaten the whole thing. The accompanying plantain chips were worthy of their own review. They were wonderful. Who knows if and when we'll be back to Louisville but when we are, La Bodeguita will be the first place we stop. BTW, have you ordered the Cubano yet? What are you waiting for? Put your phone done and order it! Enjoy!!
