My mom and I are regulars here... probably come once a week, during the week. We decided to come on a Sunday for lunch and was really disappointed with how unorganized they are when they get a rush. There was no sign in sheet to keep track of who needed to be seated. There were plenty of open tables, but the servers did not want to acknowledge anyone who was waiting and could not give a set time of how long the wait was. I've been here twice now for breakfast tacos and have had to wait 15+ minutes in the drive thru with only one or two people in front of me, and what seems to be barely anyone inside. Each staff member I have encountered has not been friendly. The tortillas are good but not worth the wait or service. This used be one of our favorite restaurants but now poor management and poor service. When we asked for manager after 45 minutes which in the meantime our waiter never came back all the manager could say that they were taking care of a big party. Hopefully they will get back to good service. What a difference a month makes we returned and the server was great as well as the server. It was about the same time as before. We went to this restaurant after laying our beloved mother to rest. Our family made arrangements to use the Patio Room, for which we paid for. Our waiter was rude and dishonest. Came here for breakfast with my family and we were very disappointed with all the food. The pancakes were spoiled and the carne Guisada was very fatty and hardly any meat. We also were not given tortillas, chips, and salsa either. The place was not busy and our service was not very good either. I sat with an empty tea glass the whole time and we had asked for a refill of coffee that came 20 minutes later. Then we continued waiting to get our check and the waitress never came back until we walked up to the counter and asked someone else for our check. The drinks were disgusting and the food tasted like cleaner or vinegar. The cheese enchiladas tasted like they were microwaved, and the cheese on the inside was not even melted. I am a tex-mex enthusiast and have tried nearly every Mexican restaurant in San Antonio, both hole in the wall and high end places. El Tipico is by far my favorite! Great environment-the people are always friendly, great reasonable prices, the best enchiladas HANDS DOWN! Love their chips and hot sauce. Also their caldo de res, steak, grilled chicken, and ranchero sauce are to die for! Most people I know go here mainly for their puffy tacos and enchiladas! This is a top favorite restaurant of mine, my parents, and grand-parents and our family has been going here for over 50 years. I didn't get the waiters name and I should have but he hardly was anywhere to be found after he took my order. The waiters BEFORE THE FIRE were always attentive and cordial. This guy, I had to ask the manager for refills and to get my bill. I waited and inordinate time for both. As I left to pay, he comes forward with the bill. He did not get 20% as is my usual tip. Stopped by El Tipico last week for lunch. I grew up just down he road so this was a weekly restaurant for me. I'm 50 so that makes me an old customer. I moved away and try to stop by when I'm in the area. This was my first visit back since the fire. Oh man things have changed. We were visiting from out of town and saw El Tipico had 4 stars. I love Mexican and TexMex food but I paid $10 for #7 Tostado plate which is 3 different chalupas. It was 3 small orange fried tortillas one had Velvita cheese one had guacamole and the other had refried beans and lettuce and tomato on it. It didn't even get close to filling me up. Also the queso dip is melted Velvita Cheese. It all tasted good but Not worth 4 stars. Four stars are those above average. Not so for El Tipico. Also be sure not to steal the items on the plate on the counter as you leave they are not complimentary you have to pay for the mints too. read more

Yes I was writing a review on El tipico restaurant because I've been a loyal customer for many years and I had my daughters graduation party there and it was OK back then in 2018 but then I recently had my birthday there on August 21 and it was horrible the food did not taste right they did not give me what was supposed to be on my menu for the price that they charge $2500 the waitresses didn't want to come you had to keep telling them to come and fill up glass with tea I didn't get everything that I was supposed to get all my plates I was argue and argue about it and I am the manager told me that it's not his fault that half of my gas did not come and I had to pay the full amount since some of my guest income and some of them were sick and they was unable to come and I don't think it's right for me have to pay for plates that people then come and eat my guess that was there was unhappy with the food and I was unhappy with the way they acted and the way they served in the way the pool was this time and all the money they charge and it was not worth it so I'm just letting you know If you have something there it's overrated it's over charge and it won't taste the same because they act like they don't want to be there and they don't want do their job. read more

Went today for dinner our waiter was totally no good our food took longer to get that usual several people came in way after us and they got their food way before us. When we got our food we didn't get our tortillas and when he finally went to get our tortillas their were none my sister ordered corn and they were store brought they usually have great corn tortillas.And the restrooms that's another subject one had no toilet paper and the other one was stuffed with toilet paper. El Tipico is a long time family fave. I will be back but I have to leave this review in hopes that the owners take it it into consideration and learn from this and educate their team rather than taking it as a jab. So we went for a very special birthday recently and called to make the reservation at 12:45 pm with Maritza for 6:30pm that evening. When we arrived for dinner the tables had not been setup and the waiter said they knew nothing about our party of 30. It wasn't that big a deal though. We helped arrange the tables and moved on. Then the waiter specifically asked who was celebrating a birthday so I pointed him out. I assumed they were going to do something special. Then the server tried to sell us on a set menu saying it will be faster because the restaurant was super busy, however we saw plenty of open tables. We decided to order off the full menu and were fine with the order taking a little longer. When the server started serving the food he was yelling it out. This was very time consuming and unprofessional. Most servers know you should take the order in a specific order and know what goes where so you are not having to constantly interrupt your guests. So because of the staggered service some had finished eating and others had still not received their food, including the guest of honor. Needless to say after constantly asking the server about it he finally received his order last at 9PM almost an hour and a half after his order was placed. What's even more frustrating is that it was a Medium Rare steak. It was a very unfortunate evening. It was also such a long and confusing process to close out our bills. And to top it off we received no apology from the manager. All in all it was one of the worst dining experiences I have ever had there. My take away from this is that this place is just not cut out for large parties just yet. I'm optimistic things will get better though. read more

I've been dining here for many years.We dined in last night and I was extremely disappointed with the lack of service. For starters, this place needs to hire a hostess. Customers were left waiting at the entrance with no instructions from staff. It is like this all the time! You walk in and staff members see you but don't acknowledge you. When we were finally seated, we ordered drinks from the bar but the server forgot to bring all of the drinks that were ordered. Once our food order was taken and we received our food, the server never came back to our table to ask if we needed refills or wanted to order more drinks from the bar. We tried to order drinks on our own at the bar but there was no bartender on duty. Our server specifically told us that there was no bartender on duty as well. I don't understand why this place would have a bar but they don't ever have a bartender on duty. It's ridiculous! We waited about 30 minutes for the server to come back before we got up to find someone to give us our checks so we could leave due to not getting any service. The so called manager barely acknowledged us when we approached him. We watched him speaking to staff members several times rather than walking around to make sure that customers were satisfied. My brother in law approached him about our tickets and he pretended he only spoke Spanish and walked away saying he would have our tickets right out and he also never came back. On top of all of this, gratuity was added for service that we didn't even receive. Prior to this experience I dined in last week and the server was very rude and basically rushed us out. We were having drinks, and also never asked us if we wanted anything else, the server quickly gave us our ticket and was standing close by to cash us out. Well at least we didn't have to wait for our ticket that time. Overall we love this place, but customer service is in need of training or help. read more

This is comfort Tex Mex food. It's not gourmet by any stretch of the imagination. It's just a good solid place to eat that's been around for a long time. This is one of my BF's childhood favorites. His grandparents used to bring him here to eat as a kid. I totally get the appeal. The enchiladas are made with processed cheese and chili (nom nom). The salsa has a nice vinegary tang and the tacos have a thick corn shell that is slightly chewy. Last time I visited, there were a few police officers enjoying lunch. We actually found this place on Yelp after a meeting in SE SA. It was absolutely top notch. The decor is simple, classic strip mall. The menus are laminated under the table's surface, causing more than one of us to claw at it until we realized it wouldn't come up. The salsa had a warm heat that sneaks up on you 'til your hard palate is burning, in a good way. I had the #2 and it included the best taco I've ever eaten. Not sure what they did to make the corn tortilla warm, thick & fluffy (I may not want to know), but it was superb. Our waitress kept the smiles and the refills coming, as well as our food. El Tipico, oh childhood institution of mine... You set the bar for dining out crazy low, with your butter packets stuck to the ceiling and zany, old, inattentive waiters. Your Mexican food and salsa never disappointed though, which is the most important thing. Even now, since you've been 'cleaned up' and redecorated into a prettier version of yourself, you still deliver the goods! I was so happy to eat at your restaurant with my family (14 of us) last week and discover that pretty much everything was as tasty as I remembered. Delicious salsa, hot chips, tasty beans and chili con carne delicately ladled atop amazing cheese enchiladas. I only took issue with the rice as it seemed a little off. Also, my puffy taco didn't stay together, but I forgive you for this, because the greasy goodness was too much to ignore!!! YUM! read more
