I'm back in my hometown to help with family business matters and decided to revisit El Torero, where I had been going as a regular when growing up here over 15 years ago. I have been eating at El Torero for the better part of 20 years at different locations. It used to be a regular Monday lunch venue for a group where I worked in the 90s. When some of us relocated to CA for a while, if anyone returned to visit GA we'd bring back some of their salsa, as it was far superior to anything available locally (Sonoma County). This location is the closest one to me currently and I will stop by every few months. The food is consistent, the salsa is still great, and the service is quick. It may not be hyper-friendly, but it it machine-like in efficiency. I'm glad they're still around and hope to keep going back for a long time to come. read more

This place is awesome. Its located in the shopping complex across from ChoWon on satelitte blvd also in the vicinity of subway and laser quest. It's a nice and comfortable environment. ALso very clean!! I probbaly counted about 20 tables. I'm assuming they can get pretty busy here since they have a "take number" sign, at the counter. It was a wednesday night when i came here with ceecee around 830pm..With in the first minute we got there, we were seated and our drinks were ordered and chips and salsa were brought out.They make their own chips and salsa which were both delish! They also bring your table a mini pitcher of water so you can refill yourself! The menu is extensive and every thing is made to order. They also offer mixed drinks and other alcoholic beverages. Price is reasonable. And the food is amazing. they have great service! My favorite Mexican food in Duluth. Hot salsa. Warm chips for dipping. Tasty ground beef in burritos and tacos. The grilled chicken nachos are really good. Tacos have lots of cheese and beef if that's your thing. I prefer my cheese dip spicy but my daughter's are just as happy with the flavor of the mild cheese dip. Rice texture has been perfect every time I am there. It's a clean establishment with friendly staff. It's not the least expensive Mexican food I have had in Duluth, but it is the best and and an enjoyable meal is worth $5 or so more dollars in my opinion. read more

El Torero is a family favorite for over 30 years. Whether eating here twice a week in the 80's and 90's to twice a year because we moved so far away, it is still a family favorite. Ask where our now very spread out family wants to eat and you never get a "no" from anyone when El Torero is suggested or ET as we lovingly call it. Starting with the prompt greeting then the equally as prompt yummy warm tortillas and salsa we wish we could duplicate. Don't forget the margaritas! In my humble opinion the Mexican lunch here, which is most often when we eat, are the best of any Mexican eatery in the Atlanta Metro area. This is, in my opinion, THE BEST Mexican restaurant anywhere. As a truck driver I've tried Mexican restaurants all across the continental US. None are as good as this one. This one is my gold standard, the one I compare all others to. You'll only be able to get here in a 4 wheeler, no place to park a rig. But, if you like Mexican food, this is the place to park somewhere nearby and Uber to. Been coming here since the spring of 1989. In the mid-80s it was a seafood restaurant. A short time later it became the Mexican restaurant it is today. It is STILL decorated as if it's still a seafood place. Fish are mounted on the walls. But, don't let the decor fool you. Oh my God, the food and service - incredibly exceptional! The salsa is better than anywhere else and they're generous with it. My favorite dinner from the menu is combination # 43. Walk, run, drive, Uber, skateboard, whatever. But, get here, get a meal, and enjoy. read more

Slow service, food is mediocre at best. Salsa is hot, but in a vinegary way, not a good way. Too watery... needs to be thicker. Rice is extremely blah.. fluffier would be better. Red sauce for Burrito's is just blah. Server seemed completely uninterested in being there... attempts at being friendly and striking up a conversation were shot down. Pricing is higher than I expected.... cheap is NOT a word I would use in regards to the price paid, maybe in regards to their atrocious decor. This place is kind of strange to me and not in the unique awesome way I usually like. I was actually trying to have a vegan diet the day I ate here and actually I succeeded. I thought maybe that having no meat or cheese in my food would contribute to a negative opinion, but it wasn't just the food. My friend got meat and cheese on his and he wasn't impressed either. The decor is kind of strange. You would think there is something mexican in the decor, but there are paintings of fish in room? It is as if this use to be a seafood restaurant and the paintings never changed. The music was 98.5 FM, which doesn't have any mexican flair to it at all. We started out with guacamole, which tasted like it was bought instead of freshly made. The chips were okay, they were warm. For mine, I got an enchilada and two tacos both with beans. The burrito was really simple... just beans and a tortilla. It actually kinda made me want to go to taco bell afterwards. The tacos was similar, just with lettuce and beans. I did like the spanish rice. But that's about it. Price wise, it was a little more than frontera or on-the-border. I would be willing to try a different location, but I didn't really like the food or atmosphere at this one. Service was okay for the most part. There was a little bit of confusion with our order with a language barrier with the server despite my friend speaking spanish as his native language. read more

I have been to this restaurant several times; today I decided to try something different and it wasn't very good unfortunately; tacos de carne azada (their spelling not mine). You can pick your meat for your tacos, so I got 2 steak and 1 chorizo. All were flavorless and the chorizo just tasted off as well. I also got cheese dip and that was good as it usually is. The sweet tea was fine. They get 3 stars because the other visits have been great and the food has been very good. I always get fajitas; various varieties and they are always flavorful and great. I think I will just stick with my usual. Some staff leave a bad impression, particularly this one guy, he's older, regardless he's a little intimidating and seems kinda pushy to get customers in and out. Food is decent and on point. However have to take off two stars because all of their employees including servers and food runners are rude and unfriendly. This place has been a staple of my Gwinnett eating routine for over 20 years- same tacky fishing decor and same delicious food. Don't expect anyone to win you over with personality in this place, just stay focused on the food: bottomless chips & salsa, which is consistently delicious, cheese dip is as good as any (but bowl is too small). I was confused when we walked in on a busy Friday night and there was a sign that said we should take a number from the machine in order to be seated. I almost ordered a 1/2 pound of sliced ham by accident. Anyway, service wasn't anything great, but not bad either. The food came out so quickly we could barely enjoy our salsa and cheese dip, but I'm not complaining! I had a stuffed quesadilla and the bf had something...ummm...Mexican...and we both enjoyed our dinners. However, I am giving this place two stars because of how brusque our server was, he wasn't even friendly and overall just didn't even care. Plus, I was super disappointed in their tamale and flauta. It was literally the worse tamale and flauta I've ever had. If that was my first impression of a tamale and flauta, let's just say I'd never want to eat it again. On top of that, they don't accept any kind of adjustment to your order, whatever options they have, that's it. I had the pleasure of bringing a party of 25 to El Torero recently. It was a busy Sat. night, and after being given the "2 hour wait" routine at 2 different "better" restaurants, one my friends suggested El Torero. Service - Outstanding. The team that helped our table truly over-delivered! Our chip bowls were always full, salsa was plentiful, and water was refilled every few minutes. Food - Excellent. I come here for the margaritas! When you first walk in, you have to seat yourself. Every time that I've gone, I've had this waiter who is just super harsh. He has always acted as if we were a nuisance. When I have my food or drinks, I always have felt like a judgement stare. That pretty makes the experience unpleasant and makes me feel unwanted. I do my best to put that stuff aside and focus on what I'm there for: the margaritas and the food (mainly margaritas). The prices for the food are pretty cheap. I always start off sharing a pitcher of frozen strawberry margarita with a friend or two. They are really strong (just the way I like it) and that it's only about $20. I think that's such a good price for a pitcher of margs. I usually order a combination of enchiladas and rice with beans. I like to order mine without cheese and they've been able to accommodate to my dietary needs. The price is usually around $8. Sometimes, I don't want to order food and just be able to enjoy a pitcher of margarita and chips with guacamole with a friend. Every time that I do that, I feel as I'm being judged hardcore and they're angry at me for not ordering. I don't think that's fair for them to do. The food and drinks come out pretty quickly. So good service in that way. When you're finished with your meal, you go up to the counter and pay for what you ordered. They're really nice in splitting up checks. That's always a bonus for me. This restaurant is located on Pleasant Hill Rd and Satelite Blvd. They have free parking right outside of the restaurant in the plaza that it is located in. In all honesty, they can do better with the service, but they're lucky that the margaritas are what attract me to this place! read more

The food is alright and I really enjoy the chips and salsa. Note that the tacos, salsa, nor chips are handmade but still decent (at least to me). However, friendly service is non-existent. They are more to the point of getting your order out quickly so that you can leave. Which depending on the type of person you are, has its pros such as when you don't want a waiter to consistently interrupting you and asking (everything okay?!). A negative point, is that no matter the number of the party being seated is... they will only bring out one bowl of salsa for you all to share, unless you specifically request a separate salsa bowl. It isn't a deal breaker, just a bit annoying that every single time I sent down with a group, we have to go through requesting and waiting for our individual bowls while the chips are already out and becoming less "fresh" as time goes on. The last con, would be... (at the time of this review), even after you finish eating and the check is left on your table. You have to get up, and then wait ~10-15 minutes in a line to pay for your meal with an expectation of tipping. The reason it takes so long, is because they recently started having issues processing credit card payments to the point it feels like all credit cards now have to "dial-up" to reach their payment processor. So it takes at least 3-5 minutes to ring up a person when they pay with a credit card. I still recommend this place as I eat here myself, but just temper your expectations. read more

Good food! Not very pricey and the portion sizes are large. Interesting decor on the walls, given that it's a Mexican restaurant but otherwise it was pretty clean and comfortable. The menu is massive! There are honestly almost too many selections to choose from, to be honest. No complaints otherwise though. I came here for lunch one day because it is down the street from where I work. It's your typical run of the mill Mexican food, American style. The tortilla chips are pretty standard and the salsa is equally the same. The service is super speedy and we received our food in less than 15 minutes upon ordering. The place is pretty busy during the lunch rush but the staff does its best to keep everyone's water glasses filled and take care of. Sure the refried beans are clearly from a can and the fact that the food is prepared so quickly makes you wonder how much of the menu is pre-made, but all in all, if you want a quick, unhealthy Mexican lunch, El Torero is your spot! read more

While El Torero is a chain, this Duluth location is particularly good and has remained a wonderful choice for a solid Mexican fix for many years. I used to come here when I worked in Duluth and we called it "El Terroristo" because of some of the tough looking aged male servers with the big mustaches. While many stores in this strip mall have fallen to the wayside, El Torero is still there and thriving. This is a testament to the quality of their food. I just went again tonight (since I recently moved to Gwinnett) and the food is just as good as I remember it. Their salsa is fresh and very hot, which I appreciate. They have great lunch specials. HUGE menu alert! The food is quick and fast. The downside is they tend to have a difficult time communicating with their patrons. I tried to get our checks split and then when the checks came out, mine was nowhere to be seen so I ended up having to look across the table for it. Like most Mexican restaurants, they bring out chips and salsa as an appetizer and the salsa is above average, but the chips are nothing spectacular. They taste rather old. Other than that, there is great value. I got the refried beans and cheese with rice and steak quesadilla (which turned out to be more like flank steak that was shredded quesadilla). This is one of the best spots for Mexican lunch anywhere! Super quick waitstaff, excellent food, and the salsa is to die for. 5 out of 5 on salsa. My parents used to take me as a child to this restaurant and it has been in business for many years. I am almost certain that the Speedy Gonzales was invented here because of the time it takes to get at the table. I love this Mexican restaurant. The salsa is always excellent. The service is always good. Servers are attentive and always make sure glasses are full and we have enough salsa and chips. The cheese dip is usually great (on occasion watered down) Last night the cheese dip w/jalapeños was perfect. I always get the grilled chicken quesadilla with onions, peppers, and mushrooms. It's my favorite. Last night it was cooked perfectly as well. (On occasion I have to ask them to make it more crispy) We can get in and out of here pretty quickly and are always pleased. Last nights dinner was 5 star. I gave 4 stars just because I have had the occasional thing not happy about. Oh, don't get the guacamole. I seems like it comes from a can.
