Bland, bland, bland. I finally visited El Toro. I had seen this on the list of Mexican restaurants in Yelp and years later, finally had an opportunity where I was in the area. From the photos and past reviews I had seen, I wasn't expecting much, and I wasn't disappointed. The sauces are out of a can, the tortilla chips are out of a bag, and the beans and rice are uninteresting. Service was minimal. No one offered a drink refill. Maybe one check if the meal was okay. It was okay. Just okay. And that is surprising as I saw a lot of people working in the place. It wasn't like they were overwhelmed with a half-full dining room. What is the draw here? I can only assume it's the really loud people in the bar that keep it afloat. There's nothing to separate them from the dining area, and that will be your entertainment for the night. read more

My group was done eating before waitress came back to check on us and I wasn't given what I ordered so then had to wait while everyone was already done eating. So they added a new feature to their service for anybody that eats at the restaurant. They automatically charge 20% for any party size! They also blocked off the end of the bar by putting reserved signs on the counter and even the bartender asked what was going on. She was told that when people come in and order drinks while waiting and bring them to their table when they are called. I guess the wait staff does not like that as then their auto tip is less. I tip my people according to their performance and tonight the service was slow to get drinks, slow to order, slow for drink refills, slow for returning the the credit card and we got charged for a 2nd basket of chips for the 3 of us. Wouldn't mind but the basket was not even half full the first time around. Our server "James P" and frankly all the staff just took their time for everything. I would have given him 15% but when they auto charge you and then offer you the option of doing a tip in addition to the bill with predetermined tip amounts on the bottom so that if you don't look at your bill, you will just give them a tip and not notice! Tricky way to get a double tip! Your server needs to earn their tip and not sit back and just collect 20% all night! The food has gone down hill and the portions are smaller. We are saddened because we liked this place but are never going back. Menu has shrunk and prices have soared. Ordered take out and didn't get chips and salsa to accompany the two dinners I had to wait for almost an hour for. Was told because they were busy they don't answer the phone. And online ordering does not allow for special requests. So many things wrong with this place yet the food itself never seems to disappoint. Wish I could say the same for the service, which on a good day, is mediocre. It's obvious the staff cannot handle large crowds as the disorganization and poor service is written all over their faces.... The bean burritos were a blah blah beans with enchilada sauce and cheese on top. The taquitos had dried chicken inside, and the flour tortillas were soggy. The food is always good BUT when I brought GLUTEN FREE CUPCAKES for a birthday party they charged me $20.00 for bringing them EVEN THOUGH they do not have Gluten free cake options available. I'm from Chicago and spoiled by the variety and availability of great Mexican food. In SW Florida, a good Mexican restaurant is not easy to find. Let's start with the appetizers. We had queso dip with chorizo - nice consistency and not greasy. It was served warm and it was deeeeeee-licious! Next was guacamole - while I had to add salt, I understand why it was not salted. Many people have to watch their sodium intake and salt is easy to add yourself. The guacamole was fresh - and contained a nice amount of tomato, onion, and cilantro. Also, the chips and salsa brought to the table were very good! Next was the main course and while the menu had many options I wanted to try - I love tacos de carne asada with cilantro and onion. El Toro's were as good if not better than what I am used to. The carne asada was perfectly cooked, wonderfully tender, and well seasoned - not greasy or salty and there was no gristle. I had 3 tacos on corn tortillas - each taco had a generous portion of meat, cilantro, and onion and a lime wedge for each one. A great taco has to have a lime to accompany it! The tacos came with a nice serving of rice and beans. The rice was nicely seasoned and perfectly cooked - not mushy or undercooked. The beans were not runny or salty - something hard to find at many Mexican restaurants. Oh, let me not forget the drinks! A margarita is a must! We had a regular margarita and a strawberry one. Both frozen - they had great flavor, not too sweet and you could taste the tequila. Now for the service - it was among the best I have received here in Florida. Our waitress Alondra was attentive and made sure we had everything we needed throughout our meal. She was efficient and we never had to wait for any of our requests. The restaurant was busy - many locals I would assume but all seemed to receive the same great service as our table did. The restaurant was very clean and nicely decorated. The owners of El Toro definitely take a lot of pride in their restaurant, their food, and having a great staff. I highly recommend El Toro if you're in the area. read more

One dinner was cold and had to be sent back to the kitchen. Finally came out after all other meals were eaten. Was boiling hot. Asked the waitress, and she admitted that kitchen staff had purposely overheated the whole plate. I'm quoting her now that kitchen staff said " they want it hot we will make it hot" it was un safe and not edible. Other dinner was supposed to be steak tacos but instead came out chicken. The manager never came out. Whoever the manager was just hid in back. A bonus is they attempt to place a 20 percent tip on the bill without telling you beforehand. Waitress claimed new policy on parties of 4???? This is how restaurant put themselves out of business. As stated, there are many other choices for Mexican food. Pedimos sentarnos en la barra a esperar nuestra mesa pero nos explicaron que no podíamos porque teníamos niños ( eso lo comprendo ) pero habían mesas cerca de la barra que estaban vacías y preguntamos para sentarnos ahí e ir tomando algo para seguir esperando y tampoco nos lo permitieron. Nos pasaron a la entrada; ellos le llaman "lobby" nos dijeron que una opción era sentarnos en dicho lobby y tomarnos algo ahí. El lobby tiene varias sillas, no hay condición de tomarse algo ahí, menos con niños donde poner un refreso, tendríamos que tener las bebidas en la mano, en la misma entrada donde pasan constantemente los demás clientes. Estuvimos ahí sentados esperando 35 minutos. Decidimos preguntar por nuestra mesa y no nos dieron respuesta. A los 45 minutos volvimos a preguntar por la mesa y ahí es que nos dicen que hasta que no lleguen los amigos que estamos esperando no nos pueden pasar adentro. Le explicamos una vez más que quizá ellos no llegarían que nosotros queríamos ir comiendo y si ellos llegaban que se unieran. Nos dijeron que no, que si la comida de ellos no salía junto con la nuestra por no llegar todos a la vez les daría mala fama en las redes. By far the best Mexican restaurant in CC. Even better than Monarcas, yes Monarcas! I ordered the Molcajete and Fajitas (steak, chicken, shrimp). They were not cheap with their rice and beans, meaning it was good amount. Not like other restaurants where their serving is a kids' size. I do think their molcajete should have a spicy salsa (Mexican salsa-homemade) in it instead of what it had; some sort of creamy sauce, but not spicy. Save your money and aggravation, was a good place but is failing miserably now. Party of four, three meals came out incorrect. (Chicken in lieu of steak) and burritos in lieu of enchiladas. Both guests ate without complaining, due to the food taking so long to come out. Food was so greasy from being over cooked it was returned with request to be removed from bill. The check was provided with an automatic tip of 20 percent added. Server stated parties of FOUR or more is policy. The server did not inform of added tip, nor did I see any signs informing people of the additional expected gratuity. Manager was on premises, never came to table and it was only 5pm, with maybe six tables In restaurant being utilized. El Toro is the only "decent" Mexican food in northwest Cape Coral. We decided to go here tonight out of convenience. We first were met at the front door with a "no coupon sign". That's fine, I don't think I ever have seen one anyway for this location. At any Mexican restaurant you typically overindulge in chips and salsa. We saw this sign. So we decided we would just skip the extra basket. The waitress then said she would replenish just the chips for $1.25. So she hastily returned with a basket of chips with no salsa. Gee thanks. The food was just ok....as it usually is. My other half ordered off of the combination menu and two of the three items he ordered were wrong. We will not be returning here.
