Best baklava ever! That's why the four stars. I've had a few meals here and they have been ok. Nothing over the top great about the food. Had tamales that were decent but had almost no meat or filling, had fajitas and the meat tasted like it had been cooked a long time ago and kept warm forever or reheated. Falafel was under-seasoned. I sat down to write this review, envisioning diatribe about Mexican culture and the commercialization of the burrito. I was going to dissect El Triunfo's folding technique and their use of layering, yadda yadda yadda. Seriously, bullet points abound. But, in all honesty, all I can say is: Dude, they make a kick ass burrito. Try the grilled veggie with pinto, guac, and hot sauce. Will light fire to your lips, but feel oh so good going down. Service is always quick, the delivery guys are super friendly, and they totally didn't even balk when I put them on hold while trying to track down a co-worker for her order. Everything is made to order at this somewhat hole in the wall with a detached dining room. The neighborhood is a bit rough at night which only adds to the flavor (I can say this because I live across the street). They work fast and the mix between El Salvadorian and Middle Eastern food works. They offer delivery via Grubhub.com but the prices are a couple of bucks more expensive for delivery. read more

We have been twice. The first time the tacos and burritos were good. The second time we were brave and tried the enchiladas. Word has it that the steak in the enchilada was good. But-there was parmesan cheese on the enchilada. Why? They were dry, there was not enough sauce, they were salty. They were just plain terrible. On the other hand a miscommunication between waiter and guest turned up a large pitcher of water for her flowers instead of a glass of water to wash down the meal. El Triunfo is really as good as it gets in South Boston, at least in my experience. It is pretty hard to get great and reliable delivery service around the UMass Boston area, let alone a great Mexican place. I absolutely love their steak burrito and their steak quesadilla is on point as well. Both were loaded with steak, pico de gallo, cheese, onions and the burrito had plenty of rice and beans. My only grief about the place is that the steak is an after thought compared to the rest of the ingredients, I want it to stand out more. I have to admit; I have made the error of ordering those horrible quesadilla from pizza places in Boston before and received filling in between flour tortillas and the cheese melted on top. ON TOP?! This is definitely not one of those places and you will appreciate the size of their quesadilla and everything else for that matter. The delivery was quick (actually arrived earlier than grubhub mentioned) and more importantly, the food was still hot. I've had food from El Triunfo twice now. The only thing that really impresses me is their delicious salsa. It is so fresh and bursting with flavor. The nacho chips are not bad either. I've been consistently disappointed with their burritos, however. True, they are huge; however, they are very bland and have an almost fast-food chain taste. Moreover, the vegetarian burritos I have had are about 75% rice and 25% vegetables. That's way too much rice for me. I'd prefer it if they were 75% veggies and 25% rice. Good go-to spot for lunch on the weekends when the hospital's eateries are closed (Au Bon Pain's open 24/7, but it doesn't count). My friend and I got a carnitas burrito and El Triunfo salad with chicken. Both got the job done. The portions for the salad aren't the greatest, but I did appreciate the guac, hummus and falafel thrown into the mix. Tried out El Triunfo's carnitas burrito today. I really enjoyed the atmosphere in the teeny tiny place, but the burrito itself was merely okay. The carnitas tasted boiled and bland, and all the hot sauce and peppers were stuck at the bottom of my burrito! So I enjoyed the last couple of bites far more than the first few. You do get a good value for your burrito, though. If these folks could just get their burrito-arranging skill up to snuff, I would bump them up to 4 stars. read more

This has been the closest to good Mexican food I've had in Boston. Coming from California, I'm quite picky, but el Triunfo has been pretty satsifying. It's convenient living in South End, but parking in front of El Triunfo has actually usually been pretty decent. It's a small space with maybe 3 bar stools, so I've usually gotten it to go. It's a clean place, and the kitchen is open. The menu has classic burritos, tacos, quesadillas, etc, but they also have falafel, hummus, etc. the falafel actually reminds me of the Carl's Jr. fried zucchini... not bad, but not quite like falafel. The owner is very friendly and accommodating to special requests on the order, like no beans, extra meat, etc. My chicken was very moist without being greasy, and it was so satisfying. The area outside is a bit sketchy, but I don't feel like it's dangerous. It's very reasonably priced for a good amount of pretty authentic Mexican burritos and tacos (if you want Mexican plates, go to Angela's in East Boston!) read more

If you live or work in or near the South End and you don't to El Triunfo at least once a week, you're crazy in the head (note: you can find a good crazy in the head doctor on Yelp, then go to El Triunfo). I'm glad I live in the area and am not crazy in the head. This is an El Salvadorian food place under the disguise of a taco shop. Their food is fresh, the portions generous, and it is the right price. Plus, they have some El Salvadorian foods that I've never tried before going there, which are all great. And the staff, although they don't talk much to you, are really nice, and when they do talk, it's to give you a tip on what is good or a way to save money. They have 3 seats there, but this is really a take out place, so be prepared to bring your food somewhere, especially with the lunch crowd. I see that there are a lot of non-5 star reviews, but I have never had any kind of a problem there, like those reviewer had. Maybe El Triunfo fixed everything right before I started going, in which case I want to thank those reviewers. Here are 2 tips: 1. the sign is hard to read over the door because it is not in a clear font so be on the lookout, and 2. don't order online because they jack up the prices (they actually gave me that tip my first time there - see how nice they are?). It's a delicious, solid burrito with fresh, crunchy ingredients at a great price. They don't charge for extras, and the jalapenos are tasty with a kick! The customer service is also pretty awesome - I called ten minutes before closing, and they made me four burritos and waited past closing for me to come and pick them up. Unfortunately, just good enough for the drunk food list. No better. Braved a walk past Pine Street Inn at night to try the venerable El Triunfo. What an interesting menu! Despite being presumably Mexican, the fillings offer something for everyone, including shrimp and falafel to the standbys of beef and chicken. Sadly, no carnitas. The shrimp quesadilla was okay, but overall pretty soggy and underflavored. I skipped the hot sauce, but perhaps I shouldn't have to fairly pass judgment on this place. Yum yum yum! I finally got to try the famous El Triunfo burrito! I was devastated, as many were, when El Pelon burned down a while back. El Triunfo had been recommended to me by a few fellow burrito lovers, and I just never got around to trying them. I had heard they were very similar to El Pelon in their goodness, and I would agree to that! I thoroughly enjoyed my burrito from these guys, and better yet they deliver it to me! It did remind me a lot of El Pelon's burritos, but that's a good thing. Chipotle was too far and i had to study for finals so i went across the street to have a gander at this place. it's no chipotle.. but it offers a more authentic taste. the burrito is as stuffed as any burrito so no complaints. i held the jalapeno back and asked for everything else on it (without the extra charge stuff) but that didn't give enough kick that i had hoped. i'd definitely come here again if i was in a hurry and too lazy to cook.. but nothing i would crave... unless i was craving average mexican food and couldn't commute anywhere. read more

Best mexican food I've had in Boston, hands down. 2 chicken tacos is a perfect cheap ($5.50 appx) dinner for me when I've run out of food in my fridge. Anyplace that offers a shrimp burrito is fine by me. And the pupusas? Not bad, had a beef burrito, chicken tamale, and a cheese pupusa. Overall the burrito wasn't really good because the steak was on the dry/ burnt side and they forgot to add guacamole which is suppose to be added as stated in the menu. But besides that everything was OK, delivery came at a good time considering how far away they were and the delivery guy was very friendly. The tamale was awesome because you can just boil it up the next day to heat it and it had LOTS of chicken in it. The pupusa had a good amount of cheese in it so thats good. Pretty boring.... P.S. Forget Anna's taqueria!! if you're in search of the best burrito place in Boston, El Triunfo is the answer. Their chicken quesadillas are very good and popular, but I usually stick with their steak burritos. The El Salvadorian dishes are simply remarkable with great portions for the price. Try papusas or ENCHILADAS. delectable, indeed. It's a family-run place, and people that work there are very nice. from more than one occasion they've offered me stuff for free because i go there regularly. While there is not much competition in Boston as far as Mexican/Central American food, I suppose this good. But just to be clear, this is really a mix of Tex Mex and Salvadoran food NOT Mexican. The food is on the bland side and filed with the usual overabundance of cream and cheese that is typical of Tex Mex food. Ever eat pure liquid feces? Well me and my husband Bernard figured this would be a nice place to visit -WE LOVE MEXICAN FOOD. Well we went and got carry out. And I got a burrito and it looked like a males testicle- 1st of all GROSS. 2nd of all it tasted WORSE than any testicle could ever taste. This place probably has mice rats bugs etc SO GROSS. Best burritos in Boston! Yes, I said it. Everything I've tried is delicious but my stand-by is the large grilled veggie burrito (peppers and squash and stuff sauteed while you wait!) with refried beans. YUM. The place is teeny-tiny - there are like 5 seats - but they're expanding into the space next door. I hope they don't lose the charm of the place - I love the graffiti-covered grates out front and the cool art covering the walls & ceiling. The staff is incredibly friendly and fast, too! I'm giving El Triunfo 5 stars for the combination of quality and atmosphere. I would probably only give the food 4 stars but when you combine it with the affordability, speed, and character of the place, El Triunfo is worthy of 5 stars. If you have any customer service problems, it's probably due to a language barrier but just tell yourself that it makes the experience more authentic. The place is now owned by a Turkish (I think) family but all of the cooks are El Salvadorian, and they sure know their stuff. Try the papusas for a traditional El Salvadorian favorite. I've had papusas in El Salvador and the ones at El Triunfo are damn near perfect. read more

I could waist my time slamming the many many over rated and down right bad burritos Boston has, but instead Ill give credit where credit is due. El Triumfo is awesome. I am not sure how to put it into words, but I recommend you give them a try.
