Wow! This place is a gem. Great food on the cheap. We went early because we heard it gets crowded and we wanted to eat there. You go up to the counter and order your food. They have picnic tables outside. We were trying to decide from the menu hanging behind the counter and then the guy opened the door where all the meat is sitting and the chicken looked so fine. Most meats are sold by the pound except the chicken. We got a half chicken - BBQed (which is really just a rub, no sauce) and a pound of pork. They give you sauce on the side. That was way too much for two people but we wanted to try both. We also got a side of sweet potatoes and a couple coronas. Our total bill was $22. The chicken was the best, so juicy and the rub was perfect. The pork was the butt cut and not as juicy as a pork shoulder, which is what we are used to at BBQ places, but very flavorful. Easily the best food I had during my entire visit to Puerto Rico. We visited El Verde after a long hike in the rainforest. Our tour guide said it was his favorite restaurant so he wanted to take us there. His suggestion turned out to be a fabulous recommendation! I rarely give full-on five star ratings, but this place was amazing. EVERYTHING was juicy, fresh, and flavorful; and for the price you can't beat this. When I visited, there are many locals order and takeout in this place. We had 8 people, and spent $120 for food and colada for each person (and we cannot even finish this much food, very cheap! They also have some seats there, which you can eat right after you ordered. We highly recommended costillas (pork ribs), pollo a la BBQ and carne frita (fried pork). Shut your face, this place is freaking awesome sauce! You order at the counter, which is right beside the meat show, I.e, their prepared meat in the case. Don't drool on the window, as I may or may not have done! The portions are HUGE! And by huge, one order will feed 4 people! The prices are tops $7.50 for the meat dishes. All of the locals come here, so you know it's incredible. Parking is really on the trickier side... as we know in Puerto Rico, you just merge and find a way! We are in Puerto Rico for just two days before a cruise and were fortunate enough​ to have local friends in the events business who know the island well. After picking us up at the airport, they brought us directly here. They claimed that El Verde had the best chicken and I have to admit they are right. It is a roadside restaurant pretty typical for the region with a ​ walk-up​ counter and a half dozen or so outside tables. The hot table was filled with ribs, whole chickens, yuca, sweet plantains​, and​ a half​ dozen other items. From the front, it was all steamed up, but from the side, you could see all the fantastic food. Our friends ordered us a whole chicken, yuca with onions and some sweet plantain. The chicken was AMAZING, crisp, flavorful skin with moist,​ tender meat. The yuca was soft and garlicky with a good bit​ of oil to add creaminess and the plantain was​ roasted and golden brown on the outside and soft, sweet and tender in the middle. El Verde has some really nice reviews, which was what led me to give them a try. Their yuka and plantains were good, the beans were seasoned very Well. However, the chicken was a little bit cold and it wasn't really seasoned except for the skin. The mofongo was the one food that I was looking forward to eat, and I was very disappointed at their mofongo. Great place for roasted chicken, ribs, pork, and provisions. Although I found the outdoor eating area outside of my level of cleanliness, you have to be like a local when you eat with the locals. Can't argue with all the great reviews. Would update a few things, including they do accept credit cards just not AMEX. There is a Spanish/English menu and several employees speak Ingles and are happy to coach you on the menu as it's easy to over order at these prices and the food is rich. Beers are icy cold. Good selection but note that Busch Light is $1! They also sell booze by the bottle and have great sangria. If you are staying at Bahia Beach or one of the other nearby resorts, get yourselves to this place. There's a good chance that you'll be a repeat customer. It's a roadhouse set-up so nothing fancy in regards to decor. Dress is as casual as you care. Enjoy. Came back after a couple year hiatus and the place hasn't changed an iota. Easy to miss this spot while driving down 3 east but it is a must stop. There is no indoor seating but the outdoor seating is covered and worth the stop even in the rain. Easily one of the highlights of my trip. We stopped after a hike in El Yunque and were famished. Ordered the pork ribs, chicken, carne frita, yuca, plantain, rice, and sweet potato. I hate to do this, but as a native PRican I feel I have to. I came here with a large order request. 5 whole chickens, 5 tubs of rice, ribs, pernil, yuca, mofongo. The prices are great. The chicken was dry, the ribs were average, the pernil was okay, the yuca was fine, the rice was standard, but the mofongo was horrid. It had a weird fishy taste to it. The food was a 3, in all honesty. There are way better places. But the service was horrible. They were so annoyed at my request. Not sure why when I paid 150$ for it and tipped them for the inconvenience they made me feel I placed on them. After placing my order, the man went to talk about me to another worker & they both scuffed. My friend was behind me on the line & wanted to order a plate for our taxi driver. They completely disregarded her and skipped her multiple times. After I tipped them there was no thank you and the guy was trying to hide from me? Not sure if he thought I had accidentally given him extra money & was trying to hide the fact I would've needed change back otherwise? It was a weird encounter. Yummy Puerto Rican BBQ! We were staying at a resort in Rio Grande and came to El Verde BBQ due to the great reviews we read. A couple of Uber drivers also told us to come here! The BBQ was yummy and the prices were amazing! The whole menu is in Spanish (and my Spanish is extremely limited), but the guy working the counter was SO helpful and explained everything to us! He even gave us samples of a few things we weren't familiar with! I wish I got his name because he was seriously the best (manager: if you're reading this I'm talking about the middle-aged man, working Sunday night around 7pm and wearing a green apron!). Anyway, the food was the perfect amount (meats sold by the lb) and super yummy. I most enjoyed the ribs and fried pork. The beers are really cheap (~$2/each).
