One of the hidden gems of Puerto Rico. Over the years I've been here many many times. The bbq chicken is fantastic. Get the pollo medio with mofongo (make sure you add the garlic sauce) and a cold cerveza and you will have it made. If you are real hungry or there with others with you split the Pollo entero and add some rice and tostonies to your order. This is the best place I've found on the island for good Puerto Rican food at great prices and a local atmosphere. When you get your food, grab an outdoor table, and enjoy your food while you talk to the friendly locals. They love to tell visitors all about their island. Holy. Moly. Stop what you are doing and eat here. This is a little hidden gem off of PR 3. We would've never know about it if we didn't see the sign, given the "recommendations" from our resort. This place is NOT your "American BBQ" and being a southern girl, I'm perfectly fine with that. I've learned here in PR that the best restaurants require that you know some Spanish to stay afloat. This spot goes down in history as the best food I ate in Puerto Rico. The fancy sit-down dinners didn't have anything on El Verde! Located just minutes down the hill from our Air B&B, my best friend and I ate there twice on vacay and probably would have gone back a second time if we had the time. Setup with barstool seating and a few picnic tables, it's easy to be drawn into the delicious smell of continuously-turning rotisserie chicken, freshly baked/fried plantains and the sounds of beer cracking open every second. The meals we had here were so juicy, flavorful and full of life, I was tempted to try and sneak a whole chicken back on the plane with me!! This was our first restaurant on the main island of Puerto Rico, and it really made our day. It was recommended to us by the owner of the place we were renting. Super authentic and delicious looking food--we had to ask for help on how to order and felt a little intimidated by it all but had a good time doing it. 23 bucks later, we were back in our rental with enough grilled and fried pork, roast chicken, mofongo, and rice & beans to last us for a few days. Luckily we had bought some salad at the nearby Ralph's to help "round" things out a little. So so good. The seasoning on the rice was a lot smokier than other places in Puerto Rico. The food was amazing and fresh, but that's maybe because the turnover rate is so high. Highly recommend everything listed above but the morcilla (blood sausage)--only for the more adventurous types. After El Younque hike, on our way back to the hotel we stopped by this BBQ place. So glad that we stopped by because it was so fulfilling and affordable. We ordered so much food because it was getting late and we were still an hour away from our hotel. We got roasted pig, yellow rice, sweet potatoes, chicken, corn, plantains, and fries. The food were good and extremely delicious since we were very hungry after a swim and hike. The BBQ pork was a little dry but I liked the roasted pork more. Their rice was what made me full. The chicken meat was sooooo juicy. Not your typical rotisserie chicken. And the plantains were so sweet and we even saw the seller bring in more fresh plantains. Can't get fresher than that. I went to this place based on Yelp rating, but in my opinion, this place suffers from ratings inflation. First of all, the parking situation is dire. Not only the "lot" is full of pot holes, it is next to a busy highway. My half chicken order came out colder than lukewarm, which was a huge letdown. A warm bbq chicken is a delicious thing, but this was not to be. The rice with lentils and the sweet potato were warm enough, and tasty. The chicken was well seasoned, but it is a shame it was so cold when I got it. I wish I took a picture of how disgusting their bathroom was! I never give 1 star however this place was not very sanitary and treated me and my sister in law poorly. I tried using the bathroom, there were 2 single restrooms, one male, one female. When both people exited they refused to give me the key so I went to the front to ask for the key once they returned it. The woman in the front told me to wait and to step back. I waited 10 minutes being respectful that she was taking orders then I asked again and she said she didn't have the key. I told her I saw both people return the key and she ignored me. I went back in line with my sister in law and she yelled at me saying I had to socially distance from her. Both of us got upset saying we're together, we were sleeping in the same bed for goodness sake! Didn't matter, she made us socially distance. We ordered together but both of us couldn't order together at the same time so I had to step back. My sister in law asked for the key to the bathroom in which she was told to wait then was told she had to give her ID for the key!!! Neither of the other people gave their ID and it's not like she was going to live in the bathroom?!? She complied and the bathroom was DISGUSTING. She received the men's bathroom key and inside there was period blood on the toilet, shit toilet paper face up in the garbage and no toilet paper to use. There was no soap or hand sanitizer there or in the outdoor seating area. I'm not sure why she had to give her ID to use this disgusting bathroom. I felt like we were treated differently perhaps because we were tourists or didn't know the language, this is an assumption but either way it wasn't nice. read more
