Stumbled across this gem in downtown Phoenix as we were too late for breakfast at our hotel and maybe a little too early for lunch. Being passionate about Mexican food and having lived in Mexico, I was a little skeptical especially because I live in Texas where most of what we can find is TexMex. To our pleasant surprise the food was very fresh and extremely tasty. I was tempted to go for the lunch chilaquiles but the owner suggested I try the enchiladas covered in poblano sauce. And I had a choice of meet fillings so I went with a birria and a chicken tinga. Both were amazing and the tinga had a great kick to it. My son had the taco plate with 2 pastor and 2 asado. The only negative is that the pastor was not from a rotisserie spit but just cubed meat seasoned well. And to wash it all down we both had the horchata which was a little too sweet for our liking. Service was excellent and the overall atmosphere of this rather small spot was perfect. So if you are downtown and looking for great Mexican food, give this place a go. read more

Rating: 4.5 Stars I stopped by around 12 PM on a Wednesday lunch time. The restaurant itself was fairly crowded but the line you go through to order and pay at the front was not too bad. I got a taco combo with a horchata. I chose al pastor, birria and asada for my tacos. Out of all of the flavors, I enjoyed the al pastor the most. It was juicy and flavorful. The birria was a little bit dry and the asada was good but not as good as the Al pastor. The beans and rice sides were also a nice accompaniment. The horchata is also a must order. Cruised in before an event downtown because the delicious smells coming from this place made me stop in my tracks. It was busy but not crowded. Some tables outside with people laughing and having a good time felt welcoming and warm. The guy behind the bar mixing drinks suggested the quesadilla or the California burrito. I chose the latter as any place that can make a GOOD California burrito is worth visiting again. I was not disappointed. The whole thing had good flavor, but was seared on both sides, which I'm personally not a fan of. But aside from that, the tortilla tasted homemade, the carne asada had good flavor, but could have been a little more robust, the cheese and sour cream were cool and added zip...but the fries...wow. Typically a cali burrito has strips of potato that look like fries, but are soft. This baby had actual french fries that were crunchy and crispy! Imagine sticking McDonalds fries into a burrito. it added a whole other dimension and flavor to the burrito. Loved it! I threw some of their beans into a few bites and I'd order the whole thing with beans in it next time I go! Check this place out next time you're downtown for a game or event. I love this place sooo much! There's a several shops in this street but have noticed this one always stays busy, it's like a hidden gem that isn't so hidden. I've taken all my coworkers on my team here. You walk up and order at the counter but they bring your food to you and clean it up. I have had the quesabirria tacos, Birria ramen, ribeye taco, burrito, tamale, rice, and elote. My friend had the California burrito this week. I tried a bite and have been thinking about it since. I typically split the quesabirria plate and spinach and cheese tamale and am impressed every time. The food is consistently good, and all of the staff is super nice too. The only thing be had that I'd pass on in the future was the elote, which I found difficult to eat in the cup and wasn't as flavorful as everything else I've tried on the menu. Looking over the menu, I saw everything from tacos to tostadas to pozole. The lady at the register was very helpful explaining the foods which I was not as familiar with. I ordered three tamales, one red (beef), one green (chicken), and one vegetable. The tamales were excellent! Each tamale was starchy and smooth. The cheese and spinach combination in the vegetable tamale was cheesy and flavorful. The seasoned, tender meat in the chicken tamale and beef tamale shredded nicely and melted in my mouth. Really delicious tacos - I tried a carne asada, al pastor, chicken tinga, and birria all for ~$12 and also shared some chips and guac + queso - YUM. This place is INCREDIBLE! Located downtown, I was blown away by the entire experience I had here. The owners are the best and made me feel very welcomed. 5 Stars honestly it's that good! Mexican food is ultimately perfect for Taco Tuesday to satisfy your expectations. Got a Surf and Turf Burrito and they got this packed with shrimp and steak, and everything tastes exactly as you would expect. The burrito was hefty in size and delicious. Since it was Taco Tuesday, there was a discount of 15% when I paid at the register. I think it also had to do with me arriving towards the end of the day while my two colleagues had almost finished their burrito's. For the next time when I'm in town, l'll try it arrive a little bit earlier to enjoy my food a little more and have more conversations. On the table was a choice of mild, medium or hot salsa. They do serve beer and horchata, but none of us were in the mood for more alcohol. The strawberry tres leche is to die for, so delicious, and you get a giant slice, it's definitely worth it! El Zaguan is a very small, family-owned and operated Mexican restaurant with decent food and exceptionally friendly service not too far from the convention center (about a 7-8 minute walk). You order at the register and then grab a seat. We had the street tacos with tinga, asada, and pastor, as well as a couple of quesabirria tacos. They don't have a lot of meat options (aside from tinga, asada, and pastor, I believe there was also chicken and possibly one other option), so if you're looking for the off cuts like tripa or buche, you're going to be out of luck. The tacos were fairly small and dressed traditionally (and simply) with a lime wedge, onions, and cilantro. The corn tortillas were delicious - perfectly griddled to be warm and pliable and just thick enough to not fall apart. The tinga was succulent and flavorful, and was the standout for me of the three tacos we ordered. The asada wasn't our favorite - a bit dry and lacking in flavor - plus there's an upcharge of I believe 30 cents for the steak. Definitely not worth it IMO. The pastor was really delicious too and you can get it with or without the pineapple. The star of lunch, though, was the quesabirria tacos. The meat was super tender, juicy, and flavorful and the tacos were super delicious dipped in the broth. If you're not sure what to get, I highly recommend these! Overally, a super solid lunch option in the downtown core. Get there early to avoid the lunch rush - we arrived around 12:15 and there was no line. By 12:30, at least 7-8 people were in line to order. read more
