This was my first visit so I started with a broad selection as well as a simple taco. The taco was amazing and didn't skimp on the meat or seasoning. The chili Reno was great with a kick of heat. There is not a lot of room in the building but they definitely made the most of it. This hole in the wall establishment has the best tacos in town hands down while providing the best service you can ask for. I must warn you it doesn't look like much from the outside and also looks closed most of the time but if you see that open sign on just park where you can to give this one a try. read more

Stopped in Juneau while on a cruise. Lucky for us the husband of an old friend from my school years volunteered to pick us up and show us around. As he gave us the tour we all became hungry and we happened to be driving past this seemly hole in the wall type restaurant. We asked if it's any good and he recommended it so we stopped. Imagine, all the way up to Alaska to get some legit very tasty Mexican food. The enchiladas were spot on, and the beans and rice were off the charts, not to mention some super good Pozole. Apparently this is a new place. The woman running the restaurant was very friendly and the dining area is clean and attractive. I ordered the Carne Asada Tacos. I was a bit hesitant to have Mexican food in Alaska, but it was pretty good. The tortillas were tasty and the meat was good. The salsas for the taco and the chips were both very good - and I'm hoping homemade? I thought $10 was a bit overpriced for 3 little street tacos, but I'd go back. Super disappointed. I ordered the regular nachos and honestly got a mediocre dish. First, there were barely any chips in the nachos. I could count possibly 10 chips in their to go container. They cheese was melted onto the container and you had to scrape out the cheese in order to even loosen the chips that were on the plate. To top it off, the oil had seeped through the chips and of course there was not once crispy chip in the bowl. I just can't think I will ever attempt to go back to this restaurant. Please, learn to make nachos, crispy chips, more than 10 in your container. The only good thing I have to say is that the salsa was decent. DON'T get the nachos, ever. read more

Excellent Mexican food! We were in Juneau on a cruise stop. My group had split as some of us wanted to go to the Alaskan Brewing Company and the kids wanted to find somewhere to fish. El Zarape was a short walk from the brewery. We thought it'd be a good idea to fill our bellies before sampling all the beer. It was a small place in an industrial area and the staff was very friendly. You can see into the kitchen and it looks like they make everything from scratch. We tried the burritos and quesadillas and were not disappointed. I don't know when I'll be in Juneau again, but I'd visit El Zarape if I had the chance. read more

Best Mexican Food in Juneau, and very friendly local owners. My number one dish is the Carne Asada tacos with the Red Sauce. The Green Sauce is pretty tasty, but the red sauce is spicier and the flavor changes as it is made fresh... sometimes a little too much chipotle flavor for me, but still very flavorful. read more

The quality was very good given we are in Juneau. Enjoyed our quesadillas and enchiladas. One thing to note though is how small the portion size is for how expensive the food is. We are both still a bit hungry after our full meals and our 'complimentary' small serving of chips. Best Mexican restaurant in Alaska that I've found. Been here a couple years between anchorage, Fairbanks, and Juneau, and a few in between. (For more authentic Mexican, not American Mexican) I've only had the tacos but they are as authentic as you can get up here. Soft shell with cilantro and onions and your choice of salsa. Yum! This place was suggested by many locals, as being a decent place for Mexican food. The restaurant set up is very poorly done. It's all in one room; kitchen, dining, etc. I didn't quite understand what was going on, on the other side of the half wall in the dining room, only that the dining room is already small and that area takes up a good amount of space. And then they go and use one of the tables to put a Christmas tree on it. I appreciated the pictures of the different dishes that they serve. The prices are a bit much for the amount of food you get. I ordered a chimichanga. It was ok at first, but as I was eating, every cut into it, released a lot of water. At that point it seemed like it less flavor. I didn't care for the rice, it was very moist and clumped together. I was really surprised that they were out of salsa. Wouldn't that be one of the first things you would do in the morning...make like 5 to 10 gallons??? $13.50 for a chimichanga and you have no salsa. Maybe that's why my chimmy was flavorless. I liked this place so much I'm writing a review here and Trip advisor ! Was up on a solo visit and craving tacos. Thank you to the rental car guy who recommended this place. I literally never would've found it. It's kind of secretly nestled in a location that wouldn't normally be on a tour route. However I can tell you it's well worth going out if your way for. I had a shrimp tostada plus a few tacos, beef, pork. Have to say they were all delicious. The only negative thing I can say is I was just back in Juneau last weekend and they were closed on Sunday. I agree that this is the best Mexican food in Juneau, and maybe all of SE Alaska. It is also not Tex-Mex, but as authentic as they can make it. I highly recommend the tamales (vegetarian) and the shrimp tostadas. Prices are very reasonable and a $12 lunch is possible. read more

Oh em gee I LOVE El Zarap, easily the best Mexican food restraunt in JTown. Went there tonight with my roomie and there was the cutest little girl there who kept giving us chip baskets.
