We got off a cruise ship and have some friends that live in Juneau. We wanted a local restaurant and not the same old tourist trap. They brought us to the Sand Bar and Grill and the fish and chips were the best I have ever had!!!!! It's connected to a bar and was full of locals. The building itself could use a a touch up but don't let that stop you from making your way to this hidden little gem. The portions are huge, the locals were great, and it's connected to a bar. Never consistent with the hours. It's frustrating trying to support local when the restaurant doesn't stay open past 9 or update their hours to reflect that. Idk why a bar wouldn't stay open past 9 in the summertime. read more

We stopped here based on the reviews of the food. From the moment we entered we felt like we were part of the "family". Stephanie greeted & sat us. She made drink recommendations that were spot on. The food was fabulous! We each had the fried haddock, mine with chips & hubby with fried mushrooms. The haddock was superb-hot, fresh & tasty! The chips were sliced fried potatoes that were hot & crispy. The mushrooms were excellent, esp dipped in cocktail sauce! The atmosphere was fun & friendly; good music, good vibe. Best fish and chips in the U.S.! Recommended to us by an agent at the Enterprise Car rental Counter in the airport, it is clear that this is a favorite of the locals. The man sitting next to us at the bar said that he comes in every Thursday, and suggested that we not even bother ordering fish and chips anywhere else. We understood: the fish was fresh and hot and not overcooked, and the batter was light and crispy. Even the tartar sauce was unusually good, with just a hint of onion flavor. The Cole slaw was creamy and sweet, which is usually not my preference, but I still found it delicious. The clam chowder was homemade and wonderful. The fries were cooked perfectly. Sandbar is one of my favorite places to go, especially if I'm craving some amazing fish n' chips. Lately they've been having these chips that are potato chip shaped but a little thicker, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, they're perfect. You also can't go wrong with the cheese curds or wings if you aren't feeling for fish. Staff is always super friendly and the restaurant part is separate from the bar, but you can also take the food to eat at a table in the bar area! My husband and I sometimes go for dinner and to play pool with some friends. It's a nice, casual place to have good food and some fun :) will keep coming back here in the future read more

As others have said, impeccable fish and chips. The beer in the batter makes it light and extra crispy, and the flakiness of the halibut inside is absolutely perfect. The "chips" (potato chip shape, thicker like fries) were tasty too with real skin on them, though they weren't as crispy as I'd like. Took a while food to come out, but as the cook said, "we have a hundred pieces of fish in the fryer right now." Clam strips were a smidge faster and were tasty though not as special. read more

The Sandbar is great and when a local recommends it I believe we give all proper disclosures so you don't like fried food or old Juneau don't go. Otherwise I think it's comfort food and I've never seen the kitchen staff match bad energy from unruly customers. Everything is low expectations which I think makes you able to enjoy the people you're with more. There's no pretension, a local is alway around and they have a kitchen side eating space for families or underage patrons. If you tell me the halibut wasn't good then I just don't believe you actually went. read more

We visited a friend and wanted to have fish and chips. He took us to Sound Bar because he said they had the best fish and chips. We were pleasantly surprised they sold halibut and not cod. A great place to meet some local Alaskans and throw some darts. Everybody is very welcoming, but you will hear about the small town gossip, in a good way. I must is there a fish and chips , if you like fish and chips, get a large! The medium is a good size of the person in the quality will leave you wishing you got a large!!!! so take my advice and go big. The fish and chips are made with fresh Alaskan halibut! They clearly have homemade batter because it is very good and taste very fresh! Also, the tartar sauce is made in house. If you don't like dive bars and terrible karaoke, sit in the cafe side and check the schedule. The halibut and chips are unbeatable in Juneau. The patrons are a hoot if you like (quieter) people watching, complete with women sporting mullets since the 80s and a guy with a live cockatoo on his shoulder. The drinkers here seem more tame than some of the Downtown places and less snobby than the hipster bars and tasting rooms overrun with toddlers. read more

The bartender named Andrea was incredibly rude. It was my first time here and she ignored me. Then when I asked for a PULLTAB ( MY FIRST TIME) she was rude about it . I will not be coming back. Is it possible to give a negative rating? If so they certainly earned it. Complete jerk runs the counter. We walked in with 9 people. Get up to the counter to order and he won't take our order...claiming that if you have groups of 8 you have to have a reservation. So he literally won't take our order. And was a jerk at the same time. And the place was empty!What a prick. And that doesn't even begin to describe how gross the place is. Think of a truck stop bathroom...that serves halibut. That's what this place looks and smells like. Do yourself a favor and go somewhere that has good service and good food. This place is a must-miss! read more

We went in for lunch at the recommendation of a local friend. The bartender sent us to the other side of the restaurant as she had 5 people at the bar. We did share with that we were planning on having drinks with lunch with that waitress so she took us back to the bar and seated us. That must have put the qbartender in an even worse mood. She put our menus in the end of the table, told us what they were out of- which included the chowder- and then proceeded to take our drink order. I went to see what alcohol they had as I wasn't going to ask any questions that might put her in a worse mood. When I got back to the table and asked for a drambuie I was told I had already been asked and they didn't have drambuie. I showed her the bottle at the bar. She forgot it. A table of 4 came in so she came and told us to give her our menus. We did ask about placing our orders and that annoyed her. We opted to pay for our drinks and leave. We heard her tell the waitress that she was very busy so maybe it was her first night. If that is the case, then perhaps the owners will see this and be able to offer some additional support. read more

Semi thick, large chunks of potatoes and nice bits of clams and bacon. Tasty AF. Place is a dive. Outer building is a pos. Not sure how they don't have rain coming in. For food go to back side with staircase, there's the door. Front side is full bar and pool tables, etc. No food there. Prices a bit high, but so is everything in Alaska, especially now. read more
