This place is a mix of history / saloon / bar and grill / tourist attraction. It's nestled right outside the pier of the cruise ship terminal. While we were quick to get off the boat - the line built even quicker. Once inside, you'll find a floor full of sawdust and a bunch of tables squeezed in to accommodate everyone. Fear not, you won't be squished. There is a good food selection for adults and kids alike. Along with the food - which was surprisingly good - they have some great drinks. I was a fan of their root beer. Red Dog Saloon also has live music. During our visit - the singer was a mix of comical and rated R. It was funny, but had my son giggle here and there. What a fun place!!! There was a musician playing his guitar and was very good. The place is always packed. Had 2 Duck Farts! I was hesitant at first because I don't like whiskey but the shot is layered so the whiskey is on the top. Once you drink it you really don't taste the Crown Royal whiskey because the Baileys and Kahlúa are the last thing you taste. After the first one, I had to have another! They have a lot of local brews on tap. I got their Kolsch since I can't find that at a lot of places and it didn't disappoint. It's really a fun atmosphere and I definitely recommend going. Twenty five years later we finally made it back to the Red Dog! Sawdust still on the floor, great Alaskan paraphernalia on the walls and ceiling. DJ playing music and singing songs that were pretty much adult only and absolutely hilarious! Ordered the shrimp basket with chips and they were lightly breaded and fresh, not frozen. My with had the fish basket which consisted of lightly breaded cod and both were excellent. Our server was Monica who really took great care of us! We had to try the shots of Duck Farts which the Red Dog Saloon is famous for and they hit the spot! My IPA was stellar and my wife's Chardonnay was very good. We were in Juneau for a few short hours and then we are headed to Japan. We walked here from the cruise ship based on a friends recommendation. When you arrive, they will direct you to a table from the front door (upstairs or downstairs). The floor is covered with about 3" of sawdust fyi (fun but you're not wearing high heels in here lol) We went upstairs and had the perfect vantage point of the entire bar. Our server, Jessica was quick to take our drink orders. The season is winding down so they were out of a few things. I ordered a house wine and DH ordered Alaskan Kolsch- both tasty. We ended up ordering 1/2 pizza with reindeer sausage - I mean, why not ? It was Detroit style with the toasty chewy crust and we really liked it. It was a nice snack. The place is total kitsch- everywhere. The entertainer sang songs from Rocky Horror picture show and then a country song and then Que se ra.. all over the place and told funny jokes in between. Yes, it's very tourist heavy. Yes, the food is average and salty. And yes, it is perpetually crowded. But still worth a drink and checking out the unique features of a Wild West saloon! The sawdust covered floors, the taxidermy on the walls, and the swinging doors are all perfect nostalgic touches. And they even have a real pistol from Wyatt Earp hanging behind the bar! At this time my review is solely about the side entrance. When coming in to Juneau on a cruise ship, I think it's safe to almost always expect this place to be crowded. I figured I'd give it a shot later in the afternoon, hoping being a solo may get me in a bit easier. As I walked through the saloon doors to a packed house, a gentlemen let me know if I was just there for the Duck Fart (which was of course my primary purpose for the visit!) that they had a "window" along the side of the building. When you exit the saloon doors and go around the corner, there's a tiny shop like area with merchandise and a bar area in which you can order shots. I finally got to try a Duck Fart, and for someone that is NOT a whiskey fan, I'd pop in every trip to snag one of those! I was really disappointed with my visit to Red Dog Saloon in Alaska. I had heard a lot about the place and expected a fun atmosphere with decent service, but my experience ended up being frustrating from start to finish. The restaurant was crowded and loud, which I understand can happen in a popular tourist spot, but the staff seemed completely overwhelmed and uninterested in helping customers. What bothered me most was the service from our waitress, Summer. In my experience, she came across as disrespectful and dismissive the entire time we were there. Simple questions about the menu felt like an inconvenience to her, and the attitude we received made the whole meal uncomfortable. We were rushed while ordering, had long waits for drinks and food, and when we tried to politely ask about the delay, the response felt rude instead of helpful. The food itself was average at best and definitely not worth the prices. Some items arrived lukewarm, and parts of our order were incorrect. By the time everything was fixed, the rest of the table had already finished eating. The atmosphere may appeal to tourists looking for the "old saloon" vibe, but customer service should still matter no matter how busy a place is. Overall, this was one of the least enjoyable dining experiences I've had in Alaska. Between the poor service, long waits, and disrespectful attitude we experienced from Summer, I wouldn't choose to come back or recommend it to others.
