I started following this guy on TikTok who travels all throughout the US trying these amazing hole in the wall gems. El Zarape caught my attention because the food looked absolutely mouthwatering. Nik Metcalfe this was absolutely delicious. Well worth the drive from Long Beach to Los Angeles. To start the chips and salsa was fresh and tasty. The sweet lady at the counter guided us along as We explained that we were in town from Dallas and had this scheduled for a week. The salsa, one a little spicy and the other a verde like sauce was delicious. Thoroughly enjoyed both. The crunchy Tacos dipped in Birria juices were soooo good. Needed to grab something to eat before seeing Poetry for the People at the Fountain Theater and El Zarape's patio turned out to a great choice on a warm day. There was a bit of people watching too.. maybe because of the liquor shop next door. Easy ordering at the window, there were printed pamphlet menus, a posted menu, and some specials - so be sure to look through it all. J ordered a bacon breakfast burrito and a cafe de olla (in case of mild food coma ha) and I ordered taquitos dorados with chicken. Everything was served fresh and hot, but the service is not quick. The food was served with care, on lovely plates and with garnishes. Although we were on a slight time crunch, the presentation even being just a patio spot was so nice the we had to sit and enjoy it. With the taquitos I especially loved that you could taste the oregano in the chicken and the fresh lettuce to cool everything down. I had a couple bites of the breakfast burrito and the salsa verde added some nice tangy light spice on the savory bacon, potatoes, and eggs. We enjoyed our quick lunch! read more

The best shrimp burrito I've had in a long time. They pack the burrito with huge shrimp and it's so filling and yummy. I live nearby in east hollywood and try to come here every few weeks. Service is friendly and quick. Their red salsa is soo spicy and absolutely fantastic. Parking is limited and shared with the liquor store, which is super convenient to grab your beers. read more

A cute authentic Mex food place tucked east past downtown! I used to come here more when I lived here, but was glad food was still really good and the people here were awesome still! Carne asada here is so so so good and is definitely the main thing to recommend when eating here. Small touches like the colorful chips, cute menu, art on the building walls all make the experience more fun. Would be a good idea for a casual date on a day with good weather. read more

This is a decent late night taco shop that hits the spot!!! I like their tacos and their nachos are the best. I like adding their authentic guacamole. All the nacho toppings go well with any protein of your choice. Rice and beans also really good and authentic. Definitely my late night Mexican restaurant of choice when I DoorDash. But everytime I come back to el zarape and I get my usual Surf & turf burrito (no beans) but if you like beans then keep it the way it's comes. That Burrito and everything else these amazing people that work and cook at El zarape make, puts the biggest smile on my face. And they are super friendly and great people. Finally!! I found an authentic Mexican restaurant that is not only serving the same... The "molcajete" is the BEST in town.... Margaritas are exquisite, and service is so far great!!! Definitely is my absolute favorite Mexican restaurant... will be back soon. read more

I forgot how good this spot is! Craving Mexican food and decided to stop by. This checked all the boxes because it's quick and no frills with great service. The quality is also there.. you get what you pay for. I had shrimp tacos and carnitas tacos and it was definitely filling. I also got a horchata which wasn't great- tasted watered down. Difficult to find parking, and it's in a sketch area of town. Outside seating only and it's limited to a small area with a few tables. Worth it though! El Zarape is one of our go-to spots, and it never disappoints. My husband always orders the huevos rancheros with a cucumber lime drink, and I usually get the huevos con chorizo with a tall glass of Coke. Everything is consistently delicious, especially their salsa and chips which are honestly some of the best. Seating is never an issue, and the staff is always friendly and welcoming. It also has a really nice, quiet vibe that makes it easy to relax and enjoy your meal. The menu has a great variety for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, so there's always something to come back for. Stopped by for a quick lunch today and couldn't decide on what to order, I ended up ordering the quesabirria tacos however in all my excitement I think the staff misunderstood my order and charged for a birria quesadilla. When I got my order I realized it was wrong but I didn't want to have the staff remake the order (they were so kind and willing to but it was not necessary) and it was honestly so much more food than I was expecting. The staff so kindly offered me a quesabirria taco to accommodate for the misunderstanding, I was not expecting this at all but this speaks so highly of their customer service. Very flavorful birria de rez. Food came out pretty quickly with some nice tortillas. Salsas are tasty. The dark one is really spicy but tastes great. This cozy taco stand is open late night in East Hollywood. We ordered shrimp tacos, pollo asado fries, a carne asada torta and an horchata. The tacos were pretty good. My only complaint is that the shrimp in the shrimp tacos might not have been seasoned. This wasn't a big issue because the toppings on the taco really came together. A little seasoning would have been the extra kick to make the taco perfect. Food is reasonably priced and service is fairly quick. This place has a window to place your orders and pick up food. Definitely a hole-in-the-wall type of place, serving up quick Mexican eats. The term "you get what you pay for" applies here, especially the ceviche. I orderd both the fish and shrimp ceviche and they tasted the same. The ceviche was pre-made and didn't taste fresh at all, and it was SO SALTY. There was barely any fish in there; mostly tomato and onion. The shrimp quesadilla and shrimp taco were not bad, though. The shrimp tacos were tasty, but tiny, definitely more of an appetizer. Their chips were really good and the creamy orange sauce was good as well. I ate the majority of the chips dipping them into that. The service was quick, but I was also the only person there, aside from the man who ordered before me. One of the guys wiped some tables down while I was there, so it's nice to know they keep them clean. They have a tiny parking lot (literally tiny, two parking spots) but I'm not sure if that belongs to them or the store behind them. There is free street parking, however, you just may need to walk a block or so. I was craving a burrito after finishing a hike nearby and this spot was PERFECT! A walk up and order counter with a couple of tables to sit at outside. We were there on a Saturday for lunch and it was easy to snag a table, plus our food came out pretty quick. I was a little annoyed about having to order chips and salsa separately, versus coming with the meal, but did so anyway. There were several different salsa options, but you need to ask the staff working at the counter for help serving these up. The grilled chicken burrito was incredible. Totally hit the spot. They have spicy salsa options, which I highly recommend trying if you enjoy foods on the spicier side. Parking is not readily available here, so be prepared to look for street options. read more

This place is very inconsistent. Sometimes it's exceptional, but sometimes the food is lacking. I've ordered from here many times, including twice in the last 30 days. Both times, I ordered a grilled chicken burrito, add cheese. The first time it was delicious. The chicken tasted fresh; there was a good balance of ingredients, and it came wrapped in foil (as I believe standard there). The second time I ordered the same thing, the burrito came in a box, no foil, and had been cut in half. Because it was cut in half, it was cold by the time I got it and the contents were leaking out. Why cut a burrito? The chicken also did not taste as good as before. One of my kids got tacos al pastor but couldn't find any pineapple. The steak on my other kid's taco also looked completely different than usual, and honestly kind of gross. Given that there was not that much time between these two orders, the difference seems very odd. I hope they can develop greater consistency, because when it's good, it's really good. read more
