I hired Electric Lee for two tasks: Installing three smart light switches and an exterior outlet. The exterior outlet appears to be have been done properly. However, all three smart light switches were incorrectly wired. Two big (and appalling issues): #1 He didn't bother to connect the ground wire and #2) He didn't bother to read the terminal labels and connected the 'load' wire to the 'traveler' terminal and not the 'load' terminal. This resulted in non-functional lights. I'd think the lack of ground is a code violation, and being so careless as to not even read the terminal labels is inexcusable. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I reported the wiring issue and they promptly refunded my money for the switch portion of the work.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] While I appreciate the refund, the level of incompetency exhibited will steer me away from never using them again. In the attached photo you can see the unconnected ground wire. I already moved the load wire to the proper terminal. The electrician had the top black wire connected to the red terminal. We wanted to replace some GFCI outlets and Lee and friends quoted us $600 for 3 outlets and 2 hours of work. When the job was done it came under for a total of ~$450. We were very pleased with the affordability. Other places like Premo Electric quoted us $1k per GFCI outlet, which would have costed us $3k which didn't seem right to us for something that sounded relatively simple. Prices vary so much and it's hard knowing which companies are legit vs which ones will happily take an arm and a leg. We were very happy with the quality of the work done and the friendliness of the technicians sent out (Tyler and Zach). [[HIGHLIGHT]]Through a combination of an issue with our chandelier missing a part and then scheduling conflicts on the team's part, it took a little longer to get the work completed than anticipated, but ultimately the work was done well and they were willing to send another team member back out when they missed part of the installation.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We really think highly of Tyler and Zach. Our only note would be to recommend that the techs save the instructions/paperwork that accompany new appliances and keep an eye out for appliances that recommend being handled with gloves. Unfortunately our brand new raw brass chandelier ended up with fingerprint/smudge stains just due to the nature of the material combined with the natural oils/dirt on the team's fingers. We don't know for sure whether the box had the instructions in it (we looked online and it says it's supposed to come with instructions saying in big bold/underlined font that they recommend handling with gloves), so we can't fully place the blame on the techs, really just a note for future projects. Task: Add four quad outlets to a bedroom on the existing circuit. The two electricians showed up on time with all necessary equipment and supplies. The bedroom under work had the furnishings, flooring and baseboards removed. Much to my surprise, the electricians cut five sizable holes in the drywall at knee level to run the cabling instead of dropping the cable to floor level so the holes could be hidden behind new baseboard (the attached YouTube screenshot shows what I expected them to do). Instead I had to tape, patch, sand, and texture the walls before painting. To be fair, these guys do what most electricians do: make the connections however possible and let the drywallers and painters cover whatever damage results. While that might be normal for new construction or an extensive remodel, on a finished wall it was inconvenient and delayed my painting by about a week. They were quick and they did clean up after themselves much better than other electricians I have hired, so there's that. The other bedroom will undergo similar treatment in the coming months, but I'll probably do that myself and run the cabling down to the floor and behind the baseboard where drywall patching won't be needed. read more
