Sometimes Yelp is wrong. Here, Elephant & Castle was far more delicious than 3.5 stars. We got four entrees, four drinks and a dessert. ALL were delicious. The Fish & Chips were tasty, cooked exactly how you'd want them. The shepherd's pie was fantastic, and came with a delicious goat cheese & almond salad. So was the chicken pot pie, with a perfect pastry and scrumptious filling underneath. And the Manta Chicken-- what a perfect surprise from a British place!! It was amazing. Great rum cheesecake, great Kentucky mule, super friendly, knowledgeable servers. And, the prices are reasonable! Any qualms are minor-- this place is a great find. read more

Came here for lunch with a coworker. I thought it was an Irish Pub only but the menu was actually very extensive. Food was pretty good and the drinks even better! It wasn't overly crowded but the service was impeccable. Definitely will come back again to try more items on the menu. read more

I am glad we found this place today. Service was excellent. We had the option of inside or outside seating and food was delicious. This fun little British food spot has happy hour 3-6 during the week so we started with a couple shared plates. I enjoyed the savory wrapped sausages and I'd order them again. We also ate the roasted tomato and whipped feta and both were a hit. The only thing I would have preferred were baguette crackers rather than the toast. It wasn't a big deal that the toast was sliced inconsistently, rather I wasn't too keen on how thick the slices were. I think next time I go I'll ask that the toast is sliced smaller and more crisp if possible... we'll see how that goes over. As for food I enjoyed the butter chicken. The chicken moist and the rice was buttery. I also received pita bread but after all the toast I ate I didn't eat the pita. I also had a bite of a French dip which was also tasty. Meat was flavorful and dip was good. Let's be honest, you can't really go wrong with the dip but this was a happy bite after an experience I had yesterday elsewhere. Very glad I came here. Next time, I look forward to trying a few of the other menu items like the savory pies and bread pudding that caught my eye. read more

Great atmosphere and attentive staff. I was undecided on what to get, and our server, Maddy, gave the recommendation of the steak and mushroom pie. She was spot-on with her recommendation and very personable with our group. Definitely not the best experience. I arrived asked if I could be seated at the bar. While the staff didn't seem unfriendly but they moved like pond water. It took about ten minutes before I was even acknowledged and Anton three to finally be helped. They definitely were not packed and there was no wait so they couldn't have been busy. Then for an English pub they didn't have Pimms. Basically it's an "English Pub" on the sign but it's basically a fancy Applebees. The bartender didn't even know her drinks, she was a beertender rather than a bartender. There are better places in DC. If your visiting I would honestly skip over this place so you get a better experience. read more

I was visiting Washington a bit ago, doing the tourist thing, and after a long day of walking through various museums and seeing a number of national monuments, it was time for a nice dinner. We picked the place more for its proximity to our hotel than anything, though the food they advertised was right up what we were looking for. We asked to be seated outside as they were running trivia inside and we were not really in the mood for that sort of thing, including the noise. It was a pleasant evening, as the heat waves that had been running through the city had just cleared out, so it was a good time. Normally I don't drink anywhere I go, but they had something on the mixed drinks menu that intrigued me, an Irish Maiden which is Jameson, St. Germain, lemon juice, simple syrup, and cucumber. I have always been a fan of whisky sours and such, so this seemed to be right up my alley... and it was. We ordered up some mussels as an appetizer, as we are always in the mood for mussels. The three of us went to town on those, despite the red sauce. We were thinking it was going to be chopped tomato, but instead it turned out to be a sauce. It was still good, mind you... just not quite what we were expecting. Next it was time for our main dishes. I had the fish and chips, and they were quite nice. No reason for me to break the bank on food when there are things like this on the menu! We looked at the dessert menu, but we were stuffed at this time, and it was just time to make our way back to our hotel for the night. I would go again, particularly if I lived in the area. If I am visiting sporadically? Well, Washington has a lot to offer, so I would want to explore. read more

i love the interior of this place. reminds me of an old english pub, something from out of harry potter. i came here for lunch with my partner and we got the 1) mediterranean flatbread, and 2) the fish & chips. both were ok. i didnt really enjoy the flatbread, as it lacked flavor and the olives were too strong for me. the fish and chips were fine. definitely oily and i can taste the old oil used to fry the fish and chips. it came with a side of cole slaw and tartar sauce. both were fine too. there werent really any wow factor in the food. it was just something to get you full... overall, ambiance is 10/10 customer service is 7/10, and food is 6.5/10 wouldnt come back here... maybe only to get beer. read more

Some street parking and garages nearby. We came here for pre dinner drinks and it was quite packed. We grabbed some seats at the bar but it probably took us about 10 minutes before the bartender grabbed our drinks. She served some other people before us at the bar. We ordered a Berry Ginger Mule & Red Hemingway. Both were ordered and served pretty quickly otherwise. Not bad for drinks but bar service was a little slow overall. Food was ok. If you get Bangers and mash I suggest you share it with someone- it's very large sausages. Very flavorful but I wasn't a huge fan of the spices used. Never got served at Elephant & Pisshole. Never got to eat. Waited 15min after they immediately sat us in the back by ourselves. No one came by. Every worker who passed didn't look at us or say "someone will be right with you." My husband lit a fire under the hostess and apparently our waiter was a dude who had walked by our section several times without acknowledging us. He strolls in after someone prolly told him about us but we were already leaving. I am not gonna abuse myself to poor service and wait 10-??minutes for water, food, and the bill. We went elsewhere and spent hundreds of dollars on a delightful evening al with spectacular service. Rhymes with Togo le Bao. Try it. Not this decrepit place. To the staff of E&C: you blew off two former chefs (one a local) who have worked the kitchen for several years as a career. We know how it works. We know the pain of the floor and in back cooking. Your display was dishonorable to the entire restaurant. To the owner: fix your staff. This is unacceptable. I ain't a Karen. Your staff are half-assed entitled children. But don't worry. Before COVID, this was an excellent place to get a great range of British beers. They also had a decent menu. Since COVID, they literally have no English beers and I think maybe they have Guinness, but so does everyone. No other beers. In a "pub" named after a part of London. Service appears to be unmotivated and generally the place has a feeling of slowly dying. How sad. read more

This was one of the worst dining experiences we've ever had. We had a 5:30 reservation for dinner before a show, and never actually got to eat dinner in the hour and a half we were sitting outside. We ordered an appetizer, which was good, but never received plates, silverware or napkins. Our waitress disappeared and we sat for at least 30 minutes before she came back outside. Not to check on us, but to put tables together for another party. She took their order, and again, didn't check on us. Another 30 minutes went by, we still sat there, empty drinks and empty stomachs, before we finally got her attention, only to learn the kitchen was backed up and we wouldn't have time to order and still make our show. So we left starving, after sitting there for an hour and a half. Absolutely ridiculous and we will go somewhere else for pre-theater dinner in the future. read more

Went here with my girlfriend on a Sunday before going to see the cherry blossoms. It's a nice spot for pub food. I got the Bloody Mary and fish & chips and she got the mimosa and burger. They give you a huge piece of fish and the fries were decent. The Mimosa was pretty good and her burger was pretty tasty. This is the second time I've been here, and both times the food has been memorably good! Today we shared the Deluxe Burger and Fish & Chips. The burger was cooked well, had a great amount of toppings, and the fries were tasty. The fish was nice and crispy with a tasty batter. I have to mention the garlic aioli...out if this world! I had a Miller Lite on draft that was cold and poured well. Absolutely delicious! I do have to mention that while they did offer outdoor seating and optional mask use, they are absolutely NOT enforcing social distancing. Food quality exceeded the level of service received as my wife had to request a lemon for her water more than once and never did receive it . The others at the table enjoyed their burger selections. We made the mistake of not reading the menu details and when we were offered a selection of fries or sweet potato fries or onion rings with our sandwich, we chose the sweet potato fries and were a bit surprised to see an upcharge on the bill. If I were a wait person, I would make certain that all of my customers knew there was a slight upcharge for select items. I hate surprise GOTCHA charges on my bill. We would probably not return to this establishment based on the couple of items sited above. Way too many choices in DC for our money! read more

I'm a tourist in town and this a cute place my friend who's a local suggested me go for a bite after she was done for work. Bring a Friday, the place was jammed and had a tour group! But we were seated pretty quickly on the lovely patio out front. Now, to be transparent, I would have given this place two stars because our waitress forgot to bring out $8 pretzel which was comped, and we're extremely grateful for that! The pretzels are amazing! Get them! For dinner, I had the Applewood Salmon burger with a side of mixed greens for $13.50 and my friend had the lamb burger with fries for $14 on brioche buns which were to die for. Ok, all of it was to die for! Best salmon burger club I can remember having. However! Our waitress was in outer space. She was walking around asking every table if they ordered the onion soup she was carrying. She was a little slow with the water (it's hot and humid), but more so, she disappeared as we finished and it took maybe a half hour longer than we needed to be there. Granted, neither of us were on a schedule, but if we were, we'd be toast. So my only suggestion would be to not have a novice work on a Friday night. The rest of the service was lovely and the area perfectly clean. I would go again for these reasons, plus they offer a variety of British food and poutine! read more

So nice to find an authentic British pub in DC. Great menu & friendly (but sparse) staff. We ordered sausage rolls as app ( yum!) then ordered fish n chips & steak & mushroom pie. We were the only 2 sitting in the dining room & only 3 tables outside, but dinner took 35 min. Fish was large but dry, steak & mushroom pie was delicious. Enjoyed the meal but definitely need more staff. read more
