Came in an hour before closing time. Haven't had nothing to eat all day except a protein shake after my workout. Needless to say, I was starving. The waiter was slow and not responsive. They had no ice for drinks so my water was lukewarm. The chicken fried chicken was bland as well as the red beans and rice. This was a bad experience... But it's Jasper, and sad to say, it's all this town has to offer. Next time I'll wait for the breakfast at Holiday Inn... Though I've had bad experiences there. Jasper just sucks overall... Seems like lately every time I visit this location I am disappointed. Either it's poor service, no service, food that isn't hot, quality, presentation, or just about anything else. We have eaten lunch twice here and were very much satisfied with the food and service. Everyone was very attentive, service was quick and we had a great lunch. Our meals we chose for lunch was the chicken fried chicken. That was a great meal. We both ordered the same. Will definitely go back. Home cooking is a good description. read more

Food is just nothing to write home about....we eat there mainly due to not having choices in town when up hunting....but really....rather cook at home! Portions are rather small... I found this restaurant on yelp and read a few reviews. The place is a small time feel and has great home cooked meals. The grill tilapia, red beans and rice, and okra were awesome. I had to finish it off with peach cobbler! Highly recommend this place. I was just driving through. read more

Very friendly staff. Stopped for a late lunch on our way through from Louisiana. All the food we ordered was delicious--Daily special-beef tips, chicken and dumplings, and grilled chicken salad. The soda machine was down which may have been a problem for some, but not my family. We asked if they had chocolate milk and our waitress, Angela, said under these circumstances she could make chocolate milk for our son. He had two glasses. This place reminds me of the family home-style home-cooked restaurants which you don't see enough of any more because of all the chain restaurants. They have daily specials and most meals had a smaller portion you could order. Also have lots of options in the kids menu with being able to choose an entree and a side -- also comes with dessert. The bread and cornbread was delicious as well. Did not have dessert but they looked tasty. Decor was rustic with a lot of older decorations---license plates, older Coca-Cola memorabilia, etc. Will definitely stop again if we happen this way. read more

not sure why this place has a 4 star rating, me and my boyfriend stopped here to eat and it was a complete waste of money. i ordered a STEAK, medium rare, (NOT A HAMBURGER STEAK) with gravy and they brought me and UNDERCOOKED HAMBURGER PATTY. he had a philly cheesesteak & the meat was super dry with a soggy bun and raw vegetables. none of the food had any seasoning at all. we both took about 4 bites and decided we couldn't even eat our meals. spend your money elsewhere!!! read more

Clean, bright, fun atmosphere! Appetizers, entrees and dessert were great! Sweet tea not very sweet but that seems to be a pattern in this part of TX & LA. Would recommend! Be careful though if you're not familiar with the area, our GPS had us driving all over Jasper, finally we called for directions and were able to find it. read more

May I suggest the hamburger steak it is excellent two times this week we have been here and that's what I ordered the place is clean and friendly wife had meat loaf one night and chicken strips the next and both were really good the server we had was young but pretty good all in all we had a pretty good experience read more

Jasper, TX isn't privy to a large selection of fine eatery, however, they give a valiant effort in many respects. Elijah's Cafe certainly falls within that category. The decor speaks Texas, the seating arrangements are certainly small town. The first impression a busy diner-style restaurant with a large amount of regular customers. The service was impressive, better than average but not the best. The wait staff is young, hard-working, and always making rounds covering drinks and asking about your visit. Never once was a drink empty or a request not anticipated, an achievement for any establishment. The food was as expected, nothing fancy but still good. The burger was over-cooked, the bun was soggy, and presentation was poor. The shrimp basket was good, typical of diner food. The hush puppies are unique, made with spicy batter, an interesting signature. All in all, a decent restaurant with hard working staff, and a home-style menu. A solid 3 star restaurant but still one of the better places in Jasper. read more

My family vacationed near the town of Jasper recently. We ate in our condo the majority of the time, but on the last night we decided to "eat out, not fast food". When in a new place, we look for a restaurant that seems to be crowded frequently so you know it has to be good...and Elijah's was just that! We were seated promptly and offered rolls and cornbread. Those were gone quickly and we were offered another round. My son is a very picky eater, but Elijah's had enough variety that my whole family was satisfied! When his burger came with cheese on it (we always order meat and bread, nothing else on his burgers), the waitress apologized and assured us she would get him another. She also misunderstood my order for fries and thought I said rice. But not only did she check on us several times, but so did other staff members. They all seemed to be there to please. It turned out that this was the waitress's first week on the job. She apologized several times and she seemed sincere. Before we left, the restaurant was becoming crowded, but the tables are far enough apart not to feel cramped. I don't like crowded and loud, but that's not how this place was at all! The atmosphere was certainly family-friendly and I would go back if I were in the area. The food was good and the prices were very good when comparing to other restaurants. read more

"Basic goodness." Broken down, the food is basic and it good. The service was basic (well better than that but I have a theme going), and it was good. The environment was basic and it is good. All in all dinner there was A-OK. At our table we had the pork chops, chicken swiss plate, and chicken fried chicken. As for sides we had the mash potatoes, loaded potatoes, broccoli, and corn. Nothing was left after we were done with our meal. This is partly because we were ravenous after a long day of traveling, but also because the food just hit the spot because it was basic and good. This is pretty close to some home cooking. One of the highlights of the meal was the bread pudding that ended the meal. The cobbler wasn't half bad either. If I was to ever find myself in Jasper again, I would not dread or actually think twice about coming here for dinner. Given the lack of restaurant options in town due to the inundation of fast food, I think Elijah's does a darn good job standing out and providing a pleasant alternative. read more

Elijah's Cafe Restaurant was a nice place to stop off and have lunch at while on our way to Fort Polk, La. Had the whole family with me so we had a wide variety of selected meals comment on. The chicken fried steak was a crowd pleaser, the batter was crisp without impacting the meat negatively and the hush puppies that came with it sent it over the top; definitely worth a try. The Fried Catfish was pretty good; I wouldn't order it again, since I was smitten by the chicken fried steak so much I would order that the next time. The fish was tasty but not the flavor I was hoping for in these parts especially since we come from California and was hoping for a something thing that was distinctly different. My daughter had the fried shrimp and stated it was good but when the round of the table tried it, again, it was not really note worthy. The fried Chicken was crispy and tender and if our granddaughter would eat it, that says a lot. The restaurant itself is a modest size establishment with some friendly folks running it. Our server was very attentive and full of smiles. Would it be worth a stop by again? Yes, it would, being that we are not much into fast foods (the only other options in the area) and like I have mentioned, the food is tasty but if you're looking for WOW you might want to wait until you get to Fort Polk (see other post). We were seated right away. I like the rustic feel of the place and everyone was very polite. Our waitress was very attentive to us and kept the table cleared. The chicken fried steak was filled the entire plate but bland. The cream gravy was from a "just add water" mix and bland. The turnip greens were from a can, the red beans and rice came with not a single grain of rice. Grilled catfish with mango habanero sauce was a large portion served on a bed of rice pilaf, but it was covered with pico de galo. We could have done with out that because it was mostly raw chopped onions. But over all for the price, $10.00 a person wasn't an awful experience. This was my 10th or so time here the past 5 years. I frequently stay at the Best Western behind the restaurant and enjoy walking to go eat. Now this has never been a top notch place. The staff is always a young crew and three years ago I had to call the owner (while I was there) and report a food fight between the staff and kitchen personal and I was hit by food..... not a good night. Anyway the owner gave me that meal free and bought me a meal at his Woodville location a couple of months later. Anyway I have never had a BAD meal here but this time I was alarmed. I wanted the Blackened heart healthy tilapia or catfish when I saw the words "FARM-RAISED" on the menu. I asked the waiter where is the farm and he looked at me like I was an idiot and said "how am I supposed to know" so I asked him to go look on the box. Guess where? Yep CHINA and to make it worse it had municipal water treatment facility. That is sewer ponds..... Just Google China catfish, tilapia, crayfish and shrimp. It is raised to help eat the "crap" and other industrialized countries do not allow it as food.... but WE DO! All this in the wake of the FDA/USDA new ruling last week that we no longer have the right to know country of origin on our beef. Great. My point here is NOT to bash a small business, but to ask YOU the consumer to ASK WHERE YOUR FOOD COMES FROM and to make choices to eat only USA raised food. Your health and our American business will thank you. A restaurant is out to make customers happy but I really think having the words "farm-raised" on the menu was misleading to me. I left a note to give the owner and will attempt to contact him over this issue. By the way this issue came up my second night. The first night (6-30-15) I had the vegetable plate and it was tasty although it was kinda cold. Then this issue came up 7-1-15 when I wanted fish.... BTW i ordered a burger and fries after I made sure it was product of USA. read more

Absolutely amazing!!!!! From the moment we walked in the door until we left. The waitress was super nice, the food was great, and there was so much of it that we will be able to have enough for lunch tomorrow too. We both ordered the 10 oz ribeye steak and shrimp special which also came with a salad and if you got grilled shrimp it was served on a bed of rice and I was given the choice of exchanging baked potato for two sides which I did. My husband got the loaded baked potato and fried shrimp which was served on a bed of french fries. The bill was less than 42$. Would highly recommend to anyone wanting a good home cooked meal in a decent amount of time in a friendly atmosphere. Will be stopping there again. read more

It was hard to find any chicken in the chicken spaghetti and the portion was small anyway for what I paid for. The meal was loaded down with some kind of cheese sauce. The salad had nothing but yellowing, light green lettuces and one tomato and onion slice. Very mediocre meal. Like a lot of restaurants nowadays this place is doing things on the cheap and it shows. People told me they had a good meal there but I was burned and won't come back. read more
