Curt is a pimp bartender. He works Sundays through Wednesdays so thats pretty much when I come. He usually has some pretty good music going and the jukebox is pretty good 2. There is a video game machine there that has hundreds of old games loaded including Streetfighter II which I pretty much own everyone on including Curt. They've got a pretty good happy hour, a couple of nice flat screens, a chill outdoor seating area, a big picture of a near-naked woman, and the food is pretty darn tasty. Also, I once saw a girl strip down topless and a g-string with about 5 of us in the bar on a Sunday night and I thought that was pretty solid. I was tempted to rate 4 stars since Curt usually acts like he doesn't know me (I get that a lot) but considering the above experience I'll still go with 5. Oh by the way....Curt has won SNR's "Best of Sacramento Bartender" and Elixir has won "Best Dive Bar" (they're framed on the wall) so the yelpers who went out together and had one bad experience and then piled on the negative reviews...check yo-selves. Finally checked out The Elixir Bar, which has been sitting on my dive bar to-do list for way too long. I feel bad that I've long ignored the cool little bar located between Old Ironsides and Fox & Goose (which I've stumbled back and forth to on many a night). We came in around 10:30pm on a Saturday night and the place was sparsely populated, but the crowd seemed laid back and cool. It's not a huge venue but it's cozy and welcoming. The bartendress promptly asked us what we'd like and was happy to make suggestions for our beer selection. She even offered multiple free tastes (like half-a-highball glass full) of their on-tap beer selection. I'm glad she did; I don't usually like IPAs but she poured me a couple that were surprisngly drinkable. We didn't stay long- maybe an hour of beer, chatting with the bartender, playing skeeball (big bonus in my book!) while enjoying Metallica and other loud rock music- but we had a chill casual fun time there. I arrived a few minutes before my companions, and during that time I couldn't help remembering all those 5 star reviews in Yelp and wondering if perhaps I was in the wrong place. I mean this is a DIVE, the genuine article and not some imitation one disguised by some restaurant conglomerate. I wouldn't take your parents or in-laws here unless they are very laid back. Truth in disclosure: This review is based on a 1PM visit for Sunday brunch. I have NOT tried any dishes from their weekday menu. Their brunch menu is one of the more eclectic I've seen in Sacramento, it's more reminiscent of one you might expect in NOLA, San Francisco or Austin, TX. There is one menu offering for the non-adventurous, the basic two eggs any style with choice of breakfast meats plus potatoes & toast. Then you come to a couple classic brunch dishes like eggs Benedict or huevos rancheros, though once you read the menu descriptions you realize these will be anything but ordinary, as their talented chef has a unusual twist or two planned for you. I sampled my friends huevos and they were delicious with a nice spicy kick. There are a couple of dishes I'll call "Asian fusion" cuisine for lack of a better term. The one I tried, who's name eludes me, was a ground pork and scrambled egg number, flavored with ginger, garlic and scallions and mixed with a very generous helping of fresh spinach. It was without a doubt the tastiest and most unique breakfast I can remember eating. There was also a fried rice dish with spam and eggs, something any Hawaiian would love and you might as well. Other vegetarian offerings included a huge fresh veggie omelet with home fries as well as oatmeal. We all enjoyed our meals and are planning a return visit soon. read more

My review is for the "brunch" only. This is clearly a dive bar so do not be expecting a "grill" even though the establishment is labelled as a "bar and grill." When we first arrived, there were only about 6 other people inside. Naturally, I thought I could get a quick bite to eat and go on with my day. WRONG! My friend and I ordered the Vegetarian Fried Rice and Eggs Benny. It took us exactly 1 hour and 20 minutes to get our food! The fried rice was was too greasy. I know we were sitting outside, but you could see a layer of "shiny" grease on the rice. As for the Eggs Benny, the eggs were over cooked and the fried potatoes were under cooked. read more

Had seen this place multiple times while visiting Old I's and Fox and Goose but never really gave it much credence as it looks like a dump from the outside. So I set up a pub crawl and put Elixir as the second bar on the tour. My first taste of the bar came from its decor. Pretty simple but yet it was everything you could want. They have some interesting crap on the walls to look at when conversation dies down, a juke box, and a terrific outside patio for you to enjoy on those lovely Sacramento days. My second taste came with my gin and tonic. I'm not a huge fan of gin or tonic... so it was a rough drink, but that was the drink that was required for the pub crawl so I drowned mine in lime and slugged it down. Not a bad first impression... 3 stars. Then my good friend told me about this bar's food and one night a group of us met up and tried out several of their burgers. Wow... excellent. I had the western burger which is basically similar to the Carl's Jr kind... but WAYYYYY better! My burger was even a little burnt on the bun and even that couldn't detract from the wonderful taste of everything this plate had to offer. Then I had a couple bites of their wings. I am not a wing fan... except if they are Elixir wings. Crispy, juicy, tongue tingling... what more could you want?? Oh, maybe some homemade ranch!? Yes, they've got that too. Damn, my mouth is watering just thinking about them. I have also tried the pizza and the calzone, both of which are delicious and unique. The calzone is HUGE! Be prepared to stuff yourself with this inside out pizza. The pizza was also pretty big. The great thing is that they make their own dough and sauce. The dough makes for a crunchy crust until you get to the handle and then it softens up. The sauce is nice and thick so you get that great tomato paste taste in every bite. I think I will ask for extra sauce so that I can dip my crust in it. Finally, drinks are inexpensive and they have a decent selection of beers which is great considering that a lot of bars in Sacto have similar beers while this one provides a little variety. Four stars because I don't really want a whole lot of new people to go here and make it crowded. read more

Low key spot tucked away on 10th St. right around the corner from Old Ironsides. I came here a couple of weeks ago with some friends. Walking in, the music was pumping and there were a few groups in the middle of a riot of laughter from an embarrasing story being retold about people in the group. The bartender met us straight away and took our drink orders. He was hilarious and had a great attitude! Our drinks arrived just as soon as we finished ordering them, so service is plenty fast too. There is a fully stocked bar, a decent selection of draft beer, and the burger was really good too. That was the biggest surprise as I didn't expect much in the food department. Elixir is simple, straight forward, and a dive good time! Check it out next time you're stumbling from Fox & Goose over to Ironsides. It surely deserves a shot, or 2, or 3, etc... :) read more

I've been avoiding Elixor for a while now, as it is a small place and I once (twice) sorta had one (five) too many here and made an ass of myself. It happens. So against all odds, we ended up here Monday night for a couple drinks. I didn't have a drink (had the hiccups!) but a friend ordered the hot wings... OMG! So darn good! Probably the best I've had in Sacramento....thought it deserved mention. Think I have a new Elixor strategy - stay clear of the drinks, go for the hot wings. read more

This place is pretty rad if you're down with the divey bar scene. The spicy Thai wings and street tacos might be the best in Sac! Food and drinks are served pretty consistently within a reasonable amount of time. Bartender Christina is great! She remembers our usual orders, makes suggestions about drinks she thinks we might like and is always fun. They also allow dogs. My girlfriend and I haven't brought our dogs down there yet but it's always cool to see other dogs there. Plus it's nice to know that we could if we wanted to. Came in here for a nightcap with my two friends to hang out a little longer without breaking the bank. They have a good selectuon on tap, good food selection and you can tell the regulars really love it here. We ended up sitting outside cause it was a gorgeous night. A patron or employee (you can't really tell) came by and bantered with us for a bit which was cool. Its kind of bland out back with a high fence and not a lot to look at but hence being classified as a DIVE bar. The games and interior is pretty great for how small the place is. Definitely suits a small group of adult kids!! This place rocks. It's my favorite home away from home. There's always someone to talk to and there are a variety of regulars who go in there. The bartenders are hella cool and always nice when I come in. I don't drink anything other than beer, whiskey and vodka, but some of their cocktails look pretty damn deliciouso. Let's get to the food; it is AMAZING! Quite possibly my favorite burgers in town. I have yet to try to vegetarian gyoza, but boy am I looking forward to it. They have many items on their menu and everything looks appetizing. Whenever I go in, I intend on trying something new, but I always end up getting a burger. Hamburger and fried egg sandwiches were tasty and did a good job of quelling our late night hunger pains. Good beers on tap and what looked like a fully stocked bar. The bartender was friendly and engaging and kept tabs on us the whole way through our visit. I like the Elixir for it's small, dive bar charm, and for it's late night good quality kitchen. It was ladies night when I was here [Friday], so drinks were 2 for 1 according to the sign in the bar. I was pushy and made sure I got my 2 for 1's but some of my friends weren't so lucky. Indoors, the bar is small, but there's extra seating outside. If you do sit outside it's hard to see who's really at your table because of the smoky haze. You'll be thankful for that haze/blindness once you step into the grimy bathroom. It looks like someone got out of control and started punching at the walls. This is definitely my spot. It is everything I expect a dive bar to be. Not so pretty looking but it has cheap drinks and good food. The BF and I always makes this our last stop of the night when we go bar hopping. The security guy always remembers us and is actually really nice. This place is a hit or miss. Sometimes it's packed and other times it's not. I could care less as long as I can get a seat at one of their shaky tables with dilapidated bar stools. The drinks are good but the food is great!!
