The filet was ordered medium rare and it was SO SO tender.. I was able to cut it with a regular knife! The potatoes are the best potatoes I've had in a while!! They were silky and creamy! Let me add that she did not send a refund, which she offered right at the end of her tantrum (complete with multiple messages where she points out things about my and my partner's appearance that she allegedly does not have a problem with, none of which I even brought up to begin with lol) "Never coming here again. They clearly lost or forgot our ticket because an hour went by and we only got one of our two appetizers. We made a reservation specifically to avoid waiting around. 3 main entrees weren't available by 7pm (they had only been open for dinner for 2 hours by our reservation time), so that was frustrating. Approaching hour 2 we almost just walked out (we should have), but the food arrived and it was decent. The manager acted sorry for the wait but didn't even try to make it better (like comp the 2 lemonades that also didn't show up for an hour, perhaps). We felt like we were being targeted because the groups that were seated after us all ate and left before we even had our second appetizer. There are simpler ways to let a person know they aren't welcome somewhere. Edit: horrible customer service. Total lack of accountability. The manager admits that service was sub par, yet continues to be defensive. I never said I was being "marginalized", only that we were the only table not being served after waiting over 1.5 hours. Kinda weird the owner immediately brings up their diverse staff and clientele. There are non race or orientation related reasons a business could treat a customer poorly, I simply said we were not served in a timely manner. If I was lying, why did the owner come to the table twice to say sorry? I refuse to ask for anything for free, I was hoping the restaurant would take the time to make things right on their own. They clearly did not and continue to make things worse. I wouldn't have written a review at all if there was any sincerity for the delays when we were dining." To quote my friend Robert who recommended Ellie's, Joy is a joy. She makes sure everyone is happy and having fun... and we are. And then she rocks it in the kitchen, putting out the most flavorful, perfectly cooked food!!! The room inside is so warm and welcoming and so tastefully designed. I want this to be my house!!! Kris was attentive and her suggestions were all perfect. And the food. Wow. Seared Ahi Nicoise with Finley Farms Lettuce, Green Bans, Egg, Olive, Red Onion and Lemon-Dijon Vinaigrette was perfect in presentation, balance and flavors. I could have the dressing for a drink! The Brined Pork Chop with Apple Butter Cream, Caramelized Onion, Whipped Potatoes and Wilted Greens is now up there as one of my favorite creations with a pork chop. Two of the items we tried to order were sold out at our 6:30 reservation, and one of the wines. The 3 pigs dish was, I'm assuming, some kind of joke. That was simply not appropriate for a restaurant to serve. The deviled eggs were akin to what we make on a whim at our house. There was nothing special about them or their presentation. I went hear to celebrate a promotion at work. I was not disappointed! I ordered the short ribs as my main and tuna as my appetizer. Someone else ordered the liver and I nearly died it was so good! Everything was absolutely delicious and the meat fell off the bone. I appreciated that the owner/chef came out to speak to everyone. She truly spent time with each table and conversed about various things. This was in between cooking for the tables. I brought visiting family a few weeks later and it was equally delicious. The ambiance was nice and intimate with dim lighting throughout. Inside and outside seating depending on the weather I think. I have only ever eaten inside. I've been eye balling the menu and reviews for a few weeks and I am happy to share that this pace was amazing! Loved the ambiance and food choices. Went back for a second time and tried something different, again, great choices for food and I will continue to frequent this establishment. Highly recommend the spicy sautéed calamari appetizer! It's fresh with a nice slight kick at the end and no breading. Sauce is great for dipping any leftover bread if you ordered the bread basket. For the entree I chose the Creekside centercut 8 oz au poivre and it was amazing! Perfect size serving. I don't eat beef often but was really glad I chose this dish. Wow. I have heard nothing but amazing things about Ellie's and I have to say that my experience dining here lived up the hype, and more. I made reservations ahead of time for dinner at 7pm on Saturday. It was busy when we arrived, so I was glad that I did so. We asked to be seated outside since it was such a lovely evening. Although it was a bit chilly, the patio heaters kept us warm and toasty. We ordered the Sardines and Saltines starter, partially due to recommendations from others and also because of our genuine curiosity. We also ordered the Crab Cake entree. Surprisingly, we loved the sardines and saltines. It was such a strange combination that I wasn't sure how I was going to like it, but I really enjoyed it. The sriracha sauce that came with it had just the right level of spice. The crab cakes were hands down some of the best crab cakes that I have ever had. The crab was so fresh and flavorful. The sweet potato hash that it sat on was delicious. I also really enjoyed the addition of pea tendrils. They added just the right amount of freshness. Since we were staying at the ForFriends Inn, we received a complimentary Berry Crumble for dessert. The crumble was delightful and was not too sweet. I loved the vanilla ice cream that was served on top of it. Unfortunately I can't remember our waitress's name, but she was amazing! She was very knowledgeable about the menu and so personable. We didn't even realize it, but my boyfriend forgot his license there. Our waitress remembered that we were staying at ForFriends and Joy called the Inn to let us know that we could pick up his license from her. The restaurant is warm and cozy, just the right place for a quiet dinner. The food is amazing and the pricing more than reasonable. My wife and I enjoyed our dinner and the service was excellent. The owner greeted you when you entered which was a nice touch. I happen to leave my credit card at the restaurant and when I called the owner not only said she had it, but that she would mail it to me. This review is based on the service only, we didn't get to try the food. Had a reservation at 7:00 on a Saturday. Place has a cool vibe but it went downhill fast. Server greeted us with, "hi, we're out of some things" a couple of the items is why we went there because we have folks with some dietary restrictions. I then asked her a question that when she had forgot the answer to said "I'm brain farting". Really? That's your choice of words as we're about to eat? We ended up ordering chickens to find out they were now out of those as well. We had them cancel the wine and had to leave. My wife went to speak with the manager and she was very dismissive. Like we were bothering her on some level. Not even an apology or a "here's my card, next time you're back in town dessert is on us. Based on the service alone as well the "manager" handled things, we won't go back UPDATE - after owner's response that shows exactly who she is. Our behavior was less than stellar? Excuse me? We sat down to have a great meal and your server was annoyed to have to be there. The server couldn't have been less friendly from the get go. And being out of half the menu on a Saturday night is just poor planning. Out of chicken, short ribs, scallops, salad. It wasn't just one item and nothing else looked good Making it like it was somehow our fault is laughable. My wife approached the server and was told to speak with you, no clue who you are. This is a very cute restaurant in a mixed use building in Santa Ynez. They have indoor and outdoor seating at the bar. If you want to come for a few glasses of wine or a bottle it is definitely worth it. The food was pretty tasty as well. Great salads but they were out of some of the appetizers on a Saturday night. The entrees were very well presented and tasty as well. The one thing we noticed thru dinner service inside was that we kept coughing. We believe this is due to smoke in the dining room. As it turns out there is no hood vent over the area where they are doing the cooking and the dining room was smoky. Towards the end of dinner service it was very noticable. The staff was friendly but wasn't as attentive as we would expect. I would also skip desert all together and go to Nella's for profiteroles instead as the poached pear was bland and the mascarpone tasted like cream cheese. We are from the Bay Area and have always considered dining at Ellie's a special treat when we visit the area. We've had many an amazing meal here. However the last two times we've dined here, the service was beyond horrible. Last fall, we had a waiter who literally forgot us outside, and our meal took hours. Tonight we went to Ellie's to celebrate my 60th birthday. We told ourselves that the poor service last time was a one time thing and looked forward to our visit for months. It was a very disappointing night. Our poor server struggled with basic functions. He apologized profusely for every mistake and delay, and we felt for him, and tried to be patient. However, at the same time, were keenly aware that we were paying a premium for the meal. He made some kind of mistake at the table next to us and a woman came from the back to inform them that the chef would be paying for their meal. We were not so fortunate. The chef came by our table as usual to check in and we told her the food was fantastic as always. We aren't big complainers, but were surprised when no acknowledgment was made of the ridiculous service - it was that obvious! In fact, she sat at a nearby table and socialized with a large group, with her back to us, while we endured the waits and mistakes. This felt like the last straw. It truly felt like no one cared. I don't know the reason behind the hiring of these 2 clearly incompetent servers. Is it really that difficult to hire talented people? Is the chef trying to give some guys a chance? Either way, more oversight is clearly needed. A meal at Ellie's is not cheap and we go there with high expectations. Our expectations have been lowered. read more

Our party of five dined on a Monday night. The service was impeccable. Our waiter had a refined sense of the pace we desired for our evening. The servings were generous and oh so delicious. We had the short rib, the filet, the lobster mac & cheese and the crab cake. This was preceded by the chopped salad and the asparagus soup. Very rare, in that five people had only positive comments on each course. Ellies Tap & Vine was not ostentatious and it was not overwrought. It was a welcoming and warm spot with a well thought out menu and a surprisingly well priced wine list. We met Joy, the chef and proprietor. Had a beautiful and casual lunch yesterday at this cute little restaurant in St Ynez. Weather was great so caught a spot outside. They also have heaters if it gets a little brisk. Ordered the Penne Pasta with sausage. A bit rich for my taste but my friend loved it. She also order an open faced tuna melt. Loved the balsamic dressing. Atmosphere was great. Service nice. Wow wow wow what a hidden gem. My wife and I came in for dinner and were absolutely blown away by not only the food but also the staff and owner. Crab cakes by far were my favorite. We ordered the scallops but ate every last bit of the tomohawk short rib that the chef came out and said "are you sure you want the last meal" she was right we are so much from the salads and first two entrees that we had to cancel. Most restaurants would have just brought it out. Last but definitely not the least was the highly recommended bread pudding. Will definitely be back. Food is not just 5* but it'll also wake up your taste buds like nothing else you've tasted. 2 of us had the beet & citrus and plum salad and one had the warm apple salad. OMG knock our socks off and lick the plates clean. Next we had lobster roll, cilantro covered halibut and the crab cake. Each dish blew our minds. We were greeted with smiling faces and seated promptly. Both the hostess and our server were kind, enthusiastic and full of information and suggestions for our first visit. Our server, Bella, was extremely knowledgeable about the menu and the wine list. Food: I had the heirloom tomato and burrata salad. My husband had the mixed Green salad. Both were fresh, well seasoned and plentiful. Entrée: the filet au poivre was delicious and cooked perfectly. My husband's crab cakes were huge, full of crab and not filler and seasoned very well. We would definitely order again. Dessert: oh my goodness- the bread pudding. I have eaten many bread puddings .... From homemade to restaurants to Michelin starred restaurants to celebrity chef's restaurants. This is the best bread pudding I have EVER eaten. The outside was crisp. The custard was smooth and so absolutely amazing. The caramel sauce was perfect. I can't wait to return. We have found our new favorite restaurant in the SYV. read more

First time trying Ellie's - the service and ambience are top notch. The liver pate was good and they give you a ton of it. my wife had the filet and it was great - cooked perfectly and the peppercorn sauce was good. I had the shepherds pie which was unlike any shepherds pie that I have had (it's one of my favorites so I order it wherever it's served) - it was covered with an oily wet liquid - look at the picture that shine is the oily liquid covering the whole thing and you can see the amount of liquid if you look at the edges. It was more a shepherds pie soup - the mashed Potatoes layer was thin and since it was submerged in liquid the mashed potatoes just kind of disappeared in the liquid. It didn't taste bad but was basically a soup with minced lamb and some finely diced carrot - per the chef it was her "interpretation " so they did Nothing wrong just wasn't my thing and they did remove it from the bill - so beware of ordering the shepherds pie if you are expecting a shepherds pie but if a shepherd pie soup sounds appealing you may like it Overall we will come back just not order that as the service was outstanding and you can tell they really care. read more

The butternut squash soup at Ellie's blew all of them away!!! Nice squash taste, with a creamy splendor that finished with a little kick of red pepper. Absolutely amazing. For dinner we had the roast chicken. Perfect for sharing and expertly spiced. The whipped potatoes and wilted spinach were also delish. The only downside to the meal was we ordered the fig and baked burrata and fig appetizer. I LOVE burrata and fig. While it tasted good it was kind of cold still. Bummer. On a recent trip to Santa Inez Valley we had a very nice dinner at Ellie's table. We had an early reservation so we were seated promptly after a warm greeting by the hostess. We all started out with salads with mine being the BLT salad. All of them were so good. Entrees were the Duck for my son, the roasted squash and the short rib (kind of like a beef stew) for me. All of us cleaned our plate and were eligible for desert but were to full to go for that option. This was a very good choice for us for a wonderful dinner in the Santa Inez Vally and a sure repeat spot on a return visit. read more

After a day on the town, we looked forward to stopping at Ellie's after a friend's recommendation. Chef Joy made us one of the best halibuts I've ever had over a lovely sweet potato persimmon hash. We also enjoyed a perfectly prepared filet mignon with the best mash potatoes to exist. I even ordered an extra side of them!! For dessert we had a melt-in-your-mouth bread pudding that you really must try! The apple crisp was also good without being too sweet and just the right amount of ice cream to complement every bite. The ambiance is fantastic. The small quaint interior is clean and cozy with low lighting that sets the mood. The wine list was quite impressive and I can't wait to come back for the $10 wine nights! There's a big wrap-around balcony outside w amazing views - this will be a wonderful place to spend the warm summer nights w friends. Lastly, Chef Joy even came to our table to check in on us and the service was spectacular without feeling stuffy. Menus change monthly and feature local seasonal ingredients which will keep me coming back to see what's new. Went here for the first time tonight. They have temporarily changed their menu to work around a kitchen remodel, and so it is a number of small plates for now as well as the $10 wine list. It's really a pretty diverse menu-we had chopped salad, the three pigs dish, shrimp cocktail, and two orders of the lobster rolls. I will say that the highlights for me were the chopped salad and the lobster rolls-they were the bomb. The final highlight was the bread pudding. I have had a lot of bread pudding in my time, but this was I think the best I ever had. Part of that were the slightly toasty carmelized edges with a big dollop of vanilla ice cream, yum! First off, I apologize for no pics because the food was not only AMAZING, the presentation was beautiful. The ambience is cozy but elegant. Our waitperson was nice and attentive and the chefs came over twice to check in and see how everything was. We started off with 3 appetizers. The shrimp cocktail, pate and the spicy duck ragout. The shrimp were huge and the plate was out of this world. The duck appetizer was good but again, the other two were phenomenal. For main courses, I got the Manila clams and sausage and my husband got the crab cake. His crab cake had a little hint of chile/spice and haand my clams and sausage were brimey, buttery and oh so good. My husband got the chocolate pot de creme and it was creamy and luscious. But I am Asian,So for my Asian test I think it could be a little less lime juice and add a little touch of salt or fish sauce or soy sauce to it,It would be perfect but that's just my personal preference.Would I order it again? My wife and I were looking for a place to eat driving up from L.A. to Lompoc and stumbled upon this gem of a restaurant! I called and they texted me back after they missed my call - telling me about the great food and ambience. Turned out it was the owner and chef, Joy texting me so I had to stop in and see what this was all about! Walked in to such a lovely space, but more than that, the amazing aromas that greeted us on entering the place. Excellent service, incredible atmosphere, and absolutely delicious food and wine.
