Ellina is my absolute favorite spot in Aspen. If I had two children and one was Ellina and the other was another local restaurant, I would tell the other one straight to their face that Ellina is my favorite. I am utterly surprised by the good reviews on the food here. The location and restaurant has potential, but EVERY dish we ordered was absolutely foul. The summer greens salad must have been picked last summer, because the lettuce was wilted and limp. We looked at it and couldn't even build up the courage to taste it. It looked AWFUL. The calamari fritti ( which is very difficult to mess up) was served soggy drenched in a very sweet soy sauce ( odd for an "Italian American" cuisine) the artichokes are just plainly steamed then served in a butter sauce. We were hoping the main courses would save our evening..... A Braised short rib is always supposed to fall off the bone, being able to easily eat it with just a fork...it unfortunately was well over cooked, bland, and not braised whatsoever. The tuna poke... They serve it on a steaming hot plate that actually cooks your tuna poke while it's served to you. That can't be normal right? My poke dish made my stomach instantly uneasy with the clashing of the top layer of the fish being cold and the bottom being slowly cooked. Service- super unfriendly, unkind staff. The bartender was AWFUL, one of the worst people I have ever encountered in the service industry. I ate there almost a week ago, and the horrible food and service has infuriated me still a week after that I had to warn others! I looked over the reviews and saw the owners spends more time slandering bad reviews, than time on improving the quality of her place. The location is fantastic! My suggestion to the owner is spend more time in investing in your food and service and no defending your restaurant on the bad reviews... btw here is a our reso our hotel made so she doesn't claim we are a "troll" like I see she has on previous review. Probably the worst $250 dinner I've ever had. My pasta dish was described as coming with prawns, so I pictured the whole prawn head and all type deal. Nope, five average shrimp. My wife ordered short ribs. What she got was a braised chuck steak. It was dry, boneless, and had none of the fatty goodness that comes with short ribs. Two dishes on the menu complete misrepresented for what they were. To top it off, our server was completely inattentive. We were treated better by the other servers bring our food to our table and the bus people. Not sure if it was because we are lesbian couple, or if we didn't look ritzy enough for Aspen (we were both dressed as nicely as others in the restaurant). Total disappointment. read more

We had a party of four. Very good wine selection. We shared 4 entrees and a few of apps. We had 3 desserts so I felt we had a good representation of the options. Loved the short ribs, French onion soup and artichoke bruschetta! It was a very special night with my son. Least favorite was the spinach pasta with bolognese sauce. ( noodles were too think). The owner of Ellina is completely unprofessional and harassing. We made reservations through OpenTable for our upcoming trip to Aspen. I later called the restaurant to confirm the reservation and to make a request. When the employee answered the phone, there was no greeting, just a hello. If there was a greeting, it did not come through on my end. I asked if it was Ellina because the person who answered the phone sounded very casual. I thought that I had called someone's personal mobile number. She then said yes this is Ellina. I said I would like to confirm my upcoming reservation. She asked me my last name and how to spell it. I spelled out my last name and she said hold on. I was not put on a real hold because I could hear shuffling and talking in the background. I then heard from a distance someone else say "hello ELLINA". It was very distant so I was confused if it was me who this other person was speaking to or if it was just me hearing someone else's conversation. So I asked very politely! "hello are you speaking to me?" The person in the distance said yes in a very unprofessional hostile voice. I was taken aback by the rude tone of this person since I was just genuinely confused by the awkward way the phone call had been handled to this point. After I asked her who was I speaking with because of this very unprofessional treatment, I was shocked to learn it was the owner herself! I told her I was shocked that the owner would treat a returning customer so poorly! She showed no care whatsoever. She just said she was going to cancel my reservation and I said yes please do and that was that, at least for me. The reservations were canceled and that should have been that but she continued by inappropriately initiating text messages to my mobile! Please, be warned! I never write reviews because if I don't like the food or service, I just try somewhere else, but this I could not let go undocumented! Look at the other 1-2 star reviews and you will see this is true to the owner's behavior and treatment to customers! Service was pushing us to leave after only 75 minutes and was consistently late with drinks, serving us wine as we were finishing our main courses. Delicious appetizers and well prepared pasta dishes with attentive and friendly service. We particularly enjoyed the artichoke bruschetta, which was fresh, flavorful and creative. The polenta bites were very good too. The main pasta entrees were very flavorful and well portioned, but it being pasta, were also very heavy. We sat indoors because of the rain. If you're concerned about COVID it probably wouldn't be your first choice as the space does not have great ventilation and it was quite crowded. But the food and service are worth it. read more

I think the owner of this restaurant doesn't read all the other reviews about her attitude and that of her hostess Courtney. Let's be clear with facts. 1. We arrived at 6:28pm 2. We waited in line as the hostess talked to a group of gentleman who had already been seated much before. 3. There were two other groups ahead of us to check in and they all mentioned how unprofessional it was that the hostess was in ignoring us. 4. When we checked in Courtney said we were late which we simply responded we were waiting in-line. We also showed her the email confirmed by her and the Ritz the reservation was for 6:30pm 5. When you came out the first words you said was 'we can't do anything for you - your late" - at which point we proceeded to show you the email. You said you hold tables for 10 minutes then you said 15 at which point we all reminded you even if there was a mix up, we were here on time within the window - however in fact we do have a confirmation from the Ritz with Courtney's name at 630pm. Amazing all around! Went twice on my 10 day trip to Aspen! Started with a summer salad and the polenta croutons! They were to die for! The sauce served on the croutons was amazing! The bolognese was perfect for my entree as well as the fall apart short ribs. I understand why this place has been around for so long! We had several people recommend Ellina as a good place to visit in Aspen. I want to think they had an off night, but our meal was not worth the $250 we ended up dropping between the two of us. We ended up having the fettuccine and the spaghetti marinara. The marinara was actually pretty good, but the fettuccine was something that you might expect at an Olive Garden at best. Stumbled upon this restaurant and I'm glad I stopped in for dinner! The service was excellent; the waiter was very attentive and the food came out quickly. The lemon vinaigrette on the mixed green salad was light and flavorful. I ordered the roasted chicken as my main dish, which was moist and well seasoned. For dessert, I shared the decadent molten chocolate lava cake, which was served with a scrumptious vanilla gelato. This was by far my favorite part of the meal. We call the Owner over and say, "you are clearly recommending wines so you can clear out the cellar, can you please recommend wines where we can order multiple bottles so we can enjoy a full glass?" We had family in town visiting, and after countless dining experiences in Aspen over the years, Ellina has been their favorite restaurant by far. The menu is perfect if you have a table of varied palates, because while Ellina boasts mostly Italian cuisine, there are Mexican and Asian influences throughout the menu, so there is something for everyone. The tacos are the best in town, the tuna poke bowl might be one of the best dishes in Aspen, the short ribs are melt in your mouth insanity, and the black pepper fettucine seems sent straight from heaven. If I had to change one thing, it would be the name (husband's very angry, floozy ex gf's name), but it's spelled differently, so I suppose it's forgivable. We ordered the calamari for appetizer and we loved it! It was crunchy but not oily at all. Found out the batter is from rice flour which is even better. The sauce and calamari really compliment each other well. For main course I had the fetuccini carbonara. The pasta itself was amazing. Homemade and perfectly al Dante. One of the freshest and best pasta I've ever eaten! My partner had the rack of lamb. Unfortunately it was overcooked and overshadowed the true flavor of the lamb. The manager graciously apologized and gave us a discount for the mistake which we appreciate very much. The dessert was my personal favorite. We got the affogato. Every single element of the dessert was fantastic by itself and when you eat it together, for sure made our mouth happy. The espresso was super high quality. The biscoti was crunchy and tasty. Food and atmosphere is good but I had a very bad experience and will not go back again. I had an unexpected very important international conference call come in. Due to the loud music being played there I had to turn the volume up on my iPad but no louder than would have been necessary to have a conversation at the table over the music. The owner came striding over to my table and began yelling at me as though I had just committed murder. She could have come over and in a quiet voice asked me to turn it lower.
