This is the best restaurant I've been to in the valley so far. The building itself is easy to get to in downtown basalt. The ambiance is upscale and you can tell that there was attention to detail when it came to decor. I also really like how the restaurant is laid out. The service was great and our server was beyond friendly. The food was outstanding. We had the pretzel bites to start and it was so good. The lamb was the star of the show. What a great place and addition to the mid valley. It anchors the soon to be completed great lawn looking over The Roaring Fork River in downtown Basalt. We've been there several times and haven't been disappointed. All of our selections have been over the top delicious. Service has been great with a mixture of seasoned professionals and local HS kids working hard at their first jobs. The look of determination on their faces is heartwarming. We went out with friends and had recommended free range. I had been there several months ago and at best had a mediocre experience, but this experience was terrible. I ordered their burger and the bun was burnt and was told that they would fix me a new Bun. It really is terrible when you have such a beautiful venue and you literally don't care about your food quality or your service. We will not be going back! read more

Free Range Health Concerns Do not come here. I'm quite flabbergasted at this place. Good reviews and good photos brought us in, but this place was 0 stars all around. The mixology was terrible. The server had an extreme lack of knowledge of the menu. We were served RAW SHRIMP by the chef and server. We were assured by the server and owner that this is how it's always served. After ordering the Ceviche we were served raw shrimp. We questioned the server and she said, "That's how it's always served." We tried a bite. No citrusy gingery flavor like we were promised. Just raw disgusting shrimp. I wanted to puke and we should have left at SLIMY RAW SHRIMP. One of the owners (the husband) came over and took it away after saying it looked normal to him, but he'd check with the chef. He came back and stated, "The chef did admit it was a little under done." After sending back two unbalanced old fashions AND tasting another shrimp dish that was chewy, tough, and fishy, AND the house-made cavatelli that was hard (not el dente) with bland, watery sauce, AND an over seasoned pork chop that was dry and difficult to chew, we decided it was time to speak with a manager. The other owner (the wife) arrived at our table with great hostility stating, "We served 200+ people tonight and they have given rave reviews enjoying the same meals, along with the chef saying they tried the ceviche and it was fine. We just can't please everyone's palates and you are just those people. I'm just going to comp the whole meal." I said, "That's not what we were looking for. After my boyfriend said he has a photo of the RAW shrimp she stated, "And I bet that's going to end up all over social media." We said we were not looking to post the photo, we were just trying to show her that our shrimp was RAW and everyone was saying it was "Fine." She finally calmed down and actually had a conversation with us. We agreed what we'd pay for and what would be comped. Then right when we were leaving she proceeded to say again , "I mean, everyone did say they tried the ceviche and they said it was fine." They are going to ask why we are just posting about the bad stuff, so here are the things we liked: boa buns, Mexican lager, and glass of wine. Terrible communication between staff, lack of knowledge, mismatching stories, defending SLIMY RAW SHRIMP, lack of respect to customers without even hearing what they have to say. Update a little over priced but on par with a Valley. Big fan of this place good cocktails they love their gym. Terreton would recommend coming as the sun goes down in the summer obviously. I ordered the tuna noodle bowl. There was a lot of vinegar they said it was to be expected. I felt like it was unexpected. we had the Barada plate. It was a banger I love Barada there's a lot of bugs bring your bug spray!!! I would underline that sentiment if I could. Service was fantastic (our server Javier was awesome), ambiance is wonderful in the new spot, the music gave it a great vibe and what can we say about the food? Delicious! We've been eating at Free Range since they started where Rhyno's is now. Great ambience, great service and the owners are very good at hosting. Fancy, gourmet meals in a casual but chic setting and a great looking bar. But alas their food is lacking but expensive. I've tried about twenty of their dishes over the years and usually it's just OK or the chef got too creative and totally missed the mark, or just simply mis-executed. I'd expect more for the prices they charge. For example a Thai green (veggie) curry that's nothing special, actually kind of bland, for $24. The most memorable part is the mushiness of the zuchini chunks that's in it. Add chicken and it's a $32 curry. A $32 curry should knock my socks off but it doesn't. For comparison, green curry at Thai #9 in Grand Junction is $16 and amazing. Another example was the cavatelli - nice texture but it was sauced wierdly tart. And finally my daughter ordered a steak medium rare but it came out well-done and inedibly bitter from being so charred on the outside. I usually just have their burgers which are always good. Brussel sprouts are good too. I understand this restaurant's success is that they have developed a clientele that is mostly Roaring Club (private golf club) members. Firstly, the food here is generally good. However, this is not a panzanella, as advertised by the menu. This is the second time I have ordered it, thinking the first was a one-off. This is what we received both times. This is an arugula salad with croutons (that are inedible because of how hard they are). This dish is the reason I am writing this review, simply because the price point and the treatment of patrons does not translate. This is the third time we have eaten their food and the experience is underwhelming. We have tried to order five times. Twice, we were told that they were too busy for takeout (within one hour of opening for service), an off-putting statement to begin with. If I were calling at 8:00pm after a busy service, I would understand that. For this order, (all of which I have driven over 45 minutes to get in hopes of elevated food without the capacity to sit down for service. All have been over $100 {and we tip 20% every time}), I called and waited for quite some time (within one hour of opening), because they were "busy" and "don't typically do takeout during a busy service". The food was ready in the time frame they gave me and the person who took my order was very professional and clearly had food-service experience (unlike the person who answered the phone and seemed panicked). However, when I got there, there were at least 3 empty four-tops (that I could see) with nobody waiting to be seated. This is easily a 50+ cover capacity establishment. I understand the nuances of reservations.... And nobody was waiting to be seated, nor do they advertise as a "reservation only" restaurant. I would humbly suggest that they evaluate the menu descriptions and that they evaluate whether or not they want to offer take out service. (Some of us like to treat ourselves or our spouses without the capacity to go out to eat). Given the responses to other less-than-stellar feedback, my hope is that Free Range takes this to understand that improvements can be made. You are serving a very affluent demographic with only more money to be made if you can match the description of what you offer to the product that is received. I was excited to eat here for Sunday brunch with the redesigned space and revamped menu. The outdoor space is beautiful, overlooking the water and with boaters and rafters floating by. While it has potential, Free Range was very disappointing--food and service were both subpar. I'll start with the service, which was friendly, but confused and glacially slow. The portion for my 6 y.o. daughter's kids french toast was about three bites. She enjoyed it and gobbled it up in an instant, and we ordered a second portion, which the server forgot to put in to the kitchen and we ended up waiting close to 40 minutes for this second, tiny piece of French toast. My mother-in-law's poached egg was completely cooked through and she sent it back for a properly poached egg. Again the server forgot to put the order in and we reminded her twice to do so. It took about 30 minutes to get the poached egg. The dish itself had very little bread to soak up the egg, too many potatoes, and the presentation was pretty unappetizing. The salmon twinkie was delicious and inventive. The smashburger was raw in the middle and flavorless; it didnt have the characteristic char/crispy edges that this style of burger is known for. I requested hot sauce three times to add some flavor it which came after about 15 minutes. Finally, the tuna tacos were tasty but very small portions. All in all Sunday Brunch was a C+. A few hits but mostly disappointment. Maybe my review is colored by having brunch at Mawa's in the Aspen Business Center the day immediately before, which is IMO the best brunch in the RFV. The prices are just about the same for both Mawa and Free Range so it seems like a fair comparison. The items that were good we enjoyed but they were too few and far between, especially given the uneven service, to justify the steep prices. Maybe I'd return after a few months to see if they have improved but I'm not rushing back. read more

Absolutely amazing experience!! My fam of 4 dined at the newly opened Free Range Kitchen on Dec 23,2021! The black eye pea and kale soup was warm and flavorful, the special- scallops and filet was excellent with a beet Demi glaze. My son was a fan of the burger and fries. The atmosphere is fun, the decor delightful! We loved the live music !!! Best of all the owners sat us, checked on us and were so happy and proud of their space! Best night in Basalt! I was a little surprised and disappointed. The atmosphere and vibe are sweet and the staff is great. I ordered the trout and was quite disappointed. The size of the fish was very small like a rectangle. So right if the bat my eyes were disappointed this did not look like fish and more like processed man made meat. It was about the size of MCDonalds crispy hash browns or more like a White Castle square burger. They paired it with a smidgin of a peeled potatoes on a sheath of rice while drowning the entire plate with some sort of fancy chef sauce. Trust me, you will get such a better value here in neighboring Basalt than you will in superficial Aspen. Prices are reasonable and the food is incredible. What to get here? Let's see...They offer meat and fish on special daily so be sure to ask. We had the tenderloin and it was absolutely succulent. DELICIOUS! The brown butter gnocchi was also very good even though the beets gave it such a vibrant red color. Good job to the server who told us the head's up on that. It was also VERY GOOD. The drinks are great and so is the wine. I enjoyed my FLIGHT but the WATERMELON MOJITO was the best. It hit the spot on a warm day. Crisp and just enough sweet for a dinner starter. But dessert was the best part. Get the MOMOFUKU PIE. It's chewy caramel, chocolate, buttery chew goodness. We tore into that like a beast. I know this place is still new. My only suggestion would be to give a tad more service. The server did a good job but she really could have kicked it up a notch for such a nice place. We waited too long for our drinks and the other tables around us seemed to be closer to the server's attention during our meal. Also, we noticed the manager stopped several times to say hi to his table of friends/visitors/special guests next to us but yet he never asked how we liked our meal. What a delightful surprise ... a terrific place, great people, tasty drinks, and outstanding food! To start, a few perfect margaritas - we did traditional ones with reposado. Next, the Range Salad, very hearty yet light with a delightful and light dressing. For entrees we had the Red Coconut Curry - dee-lish, and now ... drum beat ... urry - "I" had the Bone - In Colorado Short Rib ... I will say for a guy that eats out a lot, it was THE best short rib I have ever eaten - ever, yes that good. The service and people were nice, a simple yet appealing atmnoshere, and jsut the best food. I ordered the honey glazed pork chop. The piece of meat was tough and chewy, and it was over saturated in the honey chili sauce, as if to cover up a bad piece of meat. I think it was about $30. My husband had a Caesar salad with too much dressing on it, and a delicious soup however, it wasn't hot enough. My pork chop, in my opinion, was also not warm enough.
