I've gotten my hair cut with Alexis twice. Both times, she did a great job. She worked with precision, took her time to make everything even, and was great company for the duration of the haircut. I brought a picture of what I wanted done and she was able to match it perfectly while working with my hair's natural shape and texture. Alexis also gave me tons of tips on how to keep my hair healthy. It is clear that she is super knowledgeable about the science and art of hair. Lastly, I was shocked by how reasonable the prices are at Phil's! To get a carefully done haircut + a blowout and styling for only $55 in this economy is amazing! I moved to New Haven from NY 6-years ago for my residency/fellowship and initially was driving every other weekend back to the motherland (Flushing, NY) to get my haircut because I couldn't find anyone that knew how to cut an Asian guys hair. For those non-asian men out there, it might seem as if our hair is so simple to handle because it looks like someone just took a number 2 clipper to our entire head... you are wrong! There is definitely an art to it and DV will hook you up. I found him through Yelp almost 6-years ago after reading one review raving about how finally there was someone in new haven who knew how to cut Asian hair. He's been doing his thing here for way more than a decade so it's been a disservice that this is the only second review that I know of mentioning DVs prowress with Asian hair. Of course he isn't just limited to Asian men hair and has days where he only does women hair coloring and haircuts and whatever else women get done to their hair. I feel like just about every other person who works at Yale new haven hospital is taken care of by him. He's like the mayor of new haven. Talk to him next time you in his chair! Before finding Divy I went through 5 other people in New Haven and none of them really knew what to do with my hair type. On my first visit to him, he somehow knew exactly the way I wanted my hair cut and in subsequent visits he's asked if he could try slight modifications from what he's seen during his vacations abroad. Maybe I should have been clearer about what I wanted, but the haircut I received was bad. The layering was uneven and way too top heavy, and it would require me to straighten or blow out my hair every day to avoid a mullet-like appearance. I wish I had said something to stop the process sooner. I went to a different salon to attempt to fix it the next day, but for most of it, I just have to live with it until it grows back. She was perfectly nice. but there is no chance I am going back. read more

My hubby and I were so impressed with DV, who always get the best fit to individuals. We moved to New Haven about 2 years ago, and got our hair cut at several local barber shops. We have to say those hair stylists were nice and friendly, but not every one of them knew much about the style an Asian likes. Our biological buildup, including the shape and size of the head and face, varies from person to person, and need modifications in hair design. DV is the one who considers every aspect in one person and gets very good communication with us! We love every new look popped out of DV's hand. We love to recommend you to visit Phil's. We have followed Divie from Phil's on Wall St to Phil's on Whitney. He's simply the best at what he does. Divie has been cutting my son's hair since my son was about 3 years old and cuts my husband's hair as well. He is terrific with my very squirmy, ticklish son - beautiful haircuts every time! Now that he's moved and manages the newly opened Phil's Hair and Spa, I decided to try a haircut with him (prior, I was hesitant getting a women's haircut at a barber shop). I am SO HAPPY with the haircut Divie gave me! It's smooth, sleek and so precisely cut. The amazing thing to me is that I didn't give Divie a whole lot of direction. I just indicated the length I wanted to keep then told him to do what he thought best for my hair, and the hair cut is perfect. What was also impressive to me is that he knew to cut my hair parted in the middle, so that regardless of where I part my hair that my haircut would be even all around. Other past stylists would always ask which way I part my hair...and it would almost always end up a little uneven if I tried parting it the other way (haha, sometimes to hide my emerging grey hairs, I will part it on the other side that is less grey) I will definitely continue to see Divie for my hair style needs! Next time I am going to try getting my hair colored with him (and will post an update!)! Try the new Phil's Hair and Spa on Audubon. Went there for the first time and got a horrible haircut by the elderly Chinese lady working there. She cut it completely different from what I asked for. After coming home, I had to take scissors and clean the hair she missed behind my ears. This was my first and last time at Phils hair! read more
