When I come to the appointment, there was road work being done on Geary and I could not get my car in for work because he could not get cars out of his garage. If I could give this place 10 stars I would. I don't often have car repairs (knock on wood) but when I have, I have brought the two cars I have owned in the last 18 years to Toy Shop. These guys are skilled and HONEST, professional and trustworthy. On this last visit, I brought my car in for a second opinion after the chain brand place where I had gone for new tires (Toy Shop does not do tires or I would have gone there) which was recommending about $1000 worth of work that I was skeptical about. Toy Shop flat out told me the opposite of what the tire place had said! Gave my car a thorough inspection anyway and sent me on my way. I appreciate the honesty that I can expect out of Toy Shop and will always bring my car here for any major work. The only issue with them is that it's hard to reach them by phone. So you gotta go in and make an appointment in person, and chances are that appointment won't be for like a month. THEY ARE THAT GOOD and in demand. So, if you need repairs fast, they might not work for you, but if you can wait a bit it's worth the wait 100%. read more

Alright. So I've been going to Toy Shop since I was 18. Once, stranded on the Dumbarton Bridge trying to visit dads jobsite in my FJ40 it just died and wouldn't move. Miles of traffic and I was the "Jeep" they were talking about. My buddy Dmitri recommended Wayland. They stayed open late that night after a phone call and took me in after a tow. Turns out some stupid aftermarket Jacobs ignition system I put in was the culprit. Most 18 year olds don't know what they're doing in regards to "mods". Pure honesty henceforth and I got it back within 2 days. Mind you, I'm 41 now. It wasn't called Toy Shop back then but same difference. Wayland and crew have always been the most knowledgable "mainstream" mechanics I've ever known (they aren't mainstream, far better). There are specialty shops for the type of cars I own (Land Cruisers mainly) for various mods but this is the best damn well rounded Toyota repair shop you'll find in San Francisco. Probably the entire Bay Area. Ain't even close, actually. Over the years I've recommended dozens of people to go here and they've all been equally impressed. In fact, 2 of my families cars (like dad's and mine. Not mistresses or anything) were in the shop at the same time just 2 days ago. Why? Not because they were broken down, but because these folks do it right, don't cut corners, and tell it to you honestly. Routine maintenance on cars that are 35+ years old isn't a common trade. You get that here. That's why everytime you go, you see at least 2 old LandCruisers. Once you get them back is when the smiles form. The valves on my FJ62 were extremely difficult to tune properly. I tried. Noise, clacking...it was driving me crazy. Now? Sewing machine. My dear 80 series is with them right now and I have no doubt that once I get it back I'll smiling ear to ear once I get it back. I do very commonly work on my own trucks and I'm quite decent, but sometimes you need the folks who have seen it all give it the proper care :) I've been reading some of the negative reviews and they just make me laugh. Don't come here for an oil change. That's practically an insult. These folks are professionals who understand the various frustrations with repair shops. They are the exception in that regard. 10/10 quality work and they don't bleed you dry. They are 100% fair. What you see is what you get. That being said, they're terrible at answering the phone but it truly is worth just going in person because they aren't starving for work. You have to make an effort to get in the lineup...you won't regret it. This ain't some Joe Shmo shop. It's the Toy Shop and they're the best. Cody, my guy, you rock. I've got a '99 4Runner and I feel like they know these inside and out. Bring them a pile of well sourced parts and they'll slap them on there faster than you can drop it off. Last big job I had them to was a full poly bushing kit and suspension work. You really do need an appointment in advance, and calling to make one rarely works. I honestly am at a loss of words for Toy Shop. My experience here has been nothing but amazing. I been here on two separate occasions now. One was years ago to replace a window that was broken into. The second time was recently in the past 1-2 months. I been having major battery issues where the car dies on me every month. I originally took it to another shop because Toy Shop is always super busy so you need to schedule for an appointment and getting in touch with them over the phone is tough. That was my biggest gripe about Toy Shop but after my recent experience, I will definitely go to them if I am able to wait for an appointment. On my first, recent visit, I was recommended to go to them because they specialize in Toyotas (my car is a Scion tC). I had to wait almost a month for them to have openings for this visit but it was worth it. Wayland diagnosed that my car may potentially have a parasitic draw and ran tests on the car. I even asked him to check out my hood cable because I was having issues with it too. When I went to check on my car, he told me they were not able to find the cause of the draw but cleaned up my battery hoping that's enough to fix my issue with the battery not holding its charge. He also adjusted the cable and suggested I get it changed in the near future to avoid problems. He took his time to explain things to me and made it easy to understand which I especially appreciate as someone who knows little to nothing about cars. I was not charged for this visit. Fast forward, 2 weeks later, my car battery had issues again so I brought it back to Toy Shop and waited about a week for an appointment. This time I asked for an oil change, hood cable replacement estimate, and of course, the battery problem. They changed my oil the day of the appointment and told me the hood cable actually doesn't need replacing, just needed some lubricant. Wayland wanted to get down to the cause of my problem so I left the car with him for 2-3 days. He took me by surprise by not trying to sell me a hood cable replacement I didn't need when he was the one to first suggest I replace it AND offered to keep my car at the shop to further investigate. I feel like most places would definitely try to make money off of me and not even put in as much effort if they couldn't find out the cause of my issue. I got a call today from Wayland telling me he put in a higher capacity battery because he suspect the battery I was given, was faulty. It would not charge up on his slow charger. He did not want to charge me for it Incase it doesn't solve my problem and told me to give it a try for 1-2 weeks. I felt bad and asked if he's able to take my old battery to the other shop for a refund since it's under warranty. He said he will do further tests to make sure it's a bad battery and have a talk with the other shop. He and his team is going WAAAAY above and beyond and never giving up. He wouldn't even let me pay for the oil change service and basically said "you know what? Just come back another time and we'll worry about that at a later date." I'm freaking speechless that I did not have to pay a penny for all that time and trouble but I'll definitely head back to update Wayland on my car and pay for the oil change then. read more

My car was at the gas station two doors away and would not start. Owner let me borrow his jumper set and my car still would not start. He came over and tapped on my starter and my car started. The owner did all this and wasn't even being paid. Good people are hard to find but the owner of this shop is one of those nice people who is willing to help others. How the Toy Store saved me. The dreaded "Check Engine" light came on. Was the engine going to blow? Just a taunting orange glow. WHAT. DID. IT. KNOW? Should I stop or go? I white knuckled the 117 mile drive from Fremont to San Francisco. No further explanation of why it was on or the urgency of the problem. I feared a flaming rod would come flying through the hood of my 2001 Camery and the recriminations would flow for ignoring it. What was the problem? I called the Toy Store, they said to come in so they could see if it was urgent. It wasn't. Some smog thing, no big deal, safe to drive. Why DIDN'T THE LIGHT TELL ME THAT? I had a great experience getting my Toyota Prius repaired at the Toy Shop. The owner was extremely friendly, accommodating and knowledgeable of the vehicle. He explained to me what he thought the issue was, explained options and then verified it within a few hours. The price was extremely reasonable! I enjoyed dealing with an honest person. DO NOT EVER GO TO A TOYOTA SERVICE CENTER. My personal experience with Toyota Service Center is they will recommend unnecessary services. Use the Toy Shop instead for your Toyota service needs. Heard these guys were good mechanics and that they don't answer the phone. So when my car needed work, I went in person to ask if and when I can get my car in. Without asking me what was wrong, I was told the next available appointment was one month away. What?! I need brakes now. Most of us aren't psychic enough to predict when our cars will break down to book that far in advance. Found another mechanic that diagnosed my problem based on the symptoms I described. He then schooled me on how and why the (suspected) part failed. He too was busy but told me to drop car off the following week. I did and my car was fixed by the next morning. Price was reasonable too. Idk, Toy Shop may be great for scheduled maintenance but if your car need immediate help, forget it. read more

This is my go to place to get my car fixed or serviced! Wayland is very nice and always lets you know what is going on with your car. He explains everything very well during and after the service. Unlike the actual dealership, Wayland wont charge you for services you don't actually NEED. One time I took my car to the Toyota dealership and they quoted me an insane amount and told me all these things had to be changed out in my car. I got a second opinion here at the Toy Shop and Wayland told me the break pads weren't even close to needing a replacement. I think this place is very fair and transparent with their customers. I do wish that it was easier to get in touch with the shop. It is hard to schedule or change appointments as well as check in on when the car would be ready since they are so busy all the time and there is no designated office person answering phones. read more

Pros: High quality, medium pricing (not low, but not high either; fair balance), Honest, Hardworking, Perform Work to Customer's Request, EXCELLENT communication prior to, during, and after repairs; they go the extra mile (within reason) to take care of your vehicle (this was a relief to realize how they interact and treated my car). They interacted with both male and female customers equally (more or less technically inclined individuals the same; male/female, vice-versa). Minor Con: Sometimes the shop can get more technical operations focused, which leads to some customer calls not getting through. It wasn't a deal breaker though, just want to be transparent in my individual experience. Recommendation: Definitely recommended. They may have a slight waiting list for service (usually 1-3 weeks out when they are busy), but this is the type of auto-repair garage you can trust on a good or bad day (you can also schedule in advance; they keep a calendar book of availability at the front office counter on the right as you enter). Honesty, thoroughness, and trust are their secret business sauce. Give them a try, just not before I get scheduled for my next auto maintenance service first ;). read more

Exactly what I was looking for! Quick informative and non-shady toyota car repair! Truthfully you can't reach them on the phone... and a lot of the times they are booked up for multiple weeks at a time.. BUT I don't really mind that. If you have time, just drive over after work, see when they are available next and get your name down, then show up on that date. The service and communication when you bring your car in is superb. I'd rather wait a few weeks to get this type of service then get screwed at the Toyota dealership. Toy Shop seems to have always been honest, professional, and their prices are wayyyy below what I had always paid going to the dealership. I brought my beat-up 2002 Toyota for a tune-up & oil change. It was about $50 less than the mechanic I used to take it to. A week later, the starter went out, & they booked me an immediate appointment to bring it in for repair. The part was around $200 with $190 for labor. Sometimes though they are hard to get ahold of--they don't answer the phone. Don't give up though--keep calling cos it'll be worth it. It does drive me nuts that they often ignore the phone while working on the cars. How are you supposed to know if it's ready or if you can schedule to bring it in? What a nice people who own this shop. Friday right before closing time. I noticed one of the headlights of our car was burned. We tried to replace it ourselves. But we couldn't open the cap to reach the light. I went to a major company to ask for help. However they said they don't have any appointment available today. We really wanted to fix it today. So I remember this shop. We went and ask for help. This you man was so polite and just help us to open the cap. Then even offer us to put a replace bulb we had. Less than a few minutes. He fixed it. My beloved 1999 Toyota 4Runner was swaying side to side as if the shocks were bad but they were brand new. As were the tires.
