I've driven by Emerald City Fish & Chips a few times now and remember reading about how good this place is so when we needed lunch and were nearby, I remembered this place and stopped in. We shared a 3 piece cod and chips and a large chowder. It's nice they give a senior discount when you are over 60 (yikes!). The service was quick and friendly and we got our food quickly. The fish is cooked up perfectly with a golden crust and was delicious. They serve it with their house tartar sauce and a very small side of coleslaw. The chowder was very hearty and tasty as well. Everything here was good and, even though seating inside is limited, they had a few outdoor tables which helped. We at outside and another group joined us and we made friends with them. Bonus. Solid fish and chips spot. Came here on a Wednesday evening and it was empty. The restaurant filled up very quick after we ordered though. There's little amount of indoor dining and two tables to eat outside. We opted for the latter for more space. We ordered the sampler platter and a small (salmon) chowder. Food came out after about 15 minutes. The halibut, cod, clam, and shrimp pieces were good, but the catfish and salmon were on the dryer side. I also wasn't a fan of the crab puppies. The fries were good though. I also wasn't too fond of the salmon chowder. I had high expectations for it but it fell short. A bit too salty and I wish there were bits of salmon or something. came in cause this spot was featured on worth it's show :) i asked what fish the staff would recommend, which was cod. they also have a ton of great options for fish for their chips at different price points, cod, catfish, salmon, prawn, etc. even chicken, if you're bringing someone who isn't into fish (for some reason). now hoooly, this was good fish. as background, i've never been the biggest fan of fish and chips in general, i had it at a "famous" spot in london and was unenthused by the dish for a long while. recently, i've been hunting places in seattle for a good fish and chips meal after moving here though, and this spot really captured my heart and i'm definitely an enjoyer. super flavorful fish with a light, crisp, and flakey crust, can't even make this up, it was a perfect light fry in my opinion. great flavor coming through as well with plenty of moisture retained in the cod. and the chips (or fries, for the uninitiated) were so bomb as well. frankly, i found the cajun? dusting to be an incredible add and the texture was incredible on these. each order also comes with a coleslaw which went well with the fried items, and i found the 3 piece to be a sufficient size for a small-medium meal at a great price for the cod. overall just such a great experience here, i will definitely be back to try the catfish and salmon, and just like in worth it, probably will give the chowder a shot too. ambiance wise, there's a small parking lot with reasonable amounts of parking and the shop has a handful of seats indoor and outdoor, was kept really nice and i love the neighborhood go-to spot vibe. staff were also very nice! overall: 10/10 taste: 10/10 price: 10/10 honestly, it hasn't gotten better than this in my experience with fish and chips. read more

In Seattle and searching for good fish and chips, we kept getting directed to Emerald City Fish and Chips in Mount Baker. It was across town, but we like an adventure. Little did we know what awaited us. We arrived to a small dive with maybe 10 seats for a mainly take-out fish stand. We were not overly impressed, but have been surprised before, so we gave them a shot. We ordered fried cod with fries, calamari rings with fries and crab puppies. The crab puppies were alleged hush puppies with crab stuffed inside. I never did visualize or taste any crab meat. Everything was fried and extra sauce was an additional 50 cents. As we waited for our order and scoped out a potential seat, I noted a large bag of frozen fries being dumped into the fryer. I should have followed my gut. The food was served quickly with little flavor and left me yearning for some bit of seasoning. It was also a bit greasy. We did not finish the food and left quickly. I went back to Yelp and noted a 4.2 rating. How could this be? The Seattle magazine, free to tourists, touted the food. But unfortunately, the customer service experience left a lot to be desired and I can't in good conscience rate service higher. I ordered the halibut and chips and paid in full, including a 10% tip. After payment, the server came back to inform me they were out of halibut and asked if I'd be okay switching to cod. I agreed -- I was hungry! What happened next was the problem. The server proceeded to change my order without issuing a refund for the price difference. I had to be the one to bring it up! When I did, both the server and chef were at a complete loss -- neither knew how to process a refund or offer any meaningful resolution. I was left waiting for my food while they made no attempt to resolve the issue. To management and ownership: please invest in training your staff on basic transaction handling and customer service fundamentals. When a mistake happens -- and mistakes always happen (I get it) -- your team should know how to make it right. A simple refund or a complimentary item goes a long way. I understand $7 may seem small, but in this day and age we are all working hard to make a living. That's exactly why I tipped 10% before my food even arrived -- because I respect the work. Emerald City is a fantastic, local option for fish n chips in Seattle. This family business really treats the community well; I've seen how kind the service is to all its customers, regulars and newbies alike, and they even sponsor the local little league. The store is rather small though (6 counter seats and a couple outdoor picnic tables), so I've seen a decent amount of people opt for takeout. Prices are the best you'll find for fish n chips and fries are nicely dusted. The quality of the food is solid, though not always the most consistent. Out of all the fish, the halibut is usually the most moist and tender and I'd definitely skip the catfish and salmon. Crab hush puppies and shrimp po-boy are elite, must-try, but clam strips are kinda mid. Chowder is good and it's especially nice on chilly days. Overall, a well-deserved Seattle classic. read more

This time there were three people we came around 5:30. Greeted just like last time friendly staff. one of them suggested the salmon an prawns. I'm a big believer in trying what someone suggests when they work there. They gave us a sample of the smoked salmon chowder. We went with a two piece salmon and six piece prawn. You can tell the seafood. isn't just some pre packed seafood. The prawns were nicely cooked not over fried. Coating is light and crispy not heavily coated. Great fries. Would definitely try the specials or platter next time we noticed them after the tartar was a yummy as I remembered. What I really thought was nice is they gave us the senior discount without me asking and they didn't mention that they did I just happen to notice.
