Best possible wedding-dress shopping experience! They understood what I was looking for perfectly from my (admittedly disjointed) style requests and were extremely respectful of my budget. I love that they post their whole inventory on Pintrest so I could digitally browse and pin to my heart's content, and then actually go and try on these amazing dresses in person too! Plus getting a brand new Nicole Miller dress with the tags still on for less than half the original price could not be a better deal. The saleswomen were incredibly nice, even when it took me three appointments and 6 months to finally commit to a dress. I ended up finding exactly what I was looking for and saved a ton of money, but more importantly I never felt insecure or anxious during the often nerve-wracking experience of wedding dress shopping. Once I found The Dress, I cried so many happy tears, it couldn't have been more perfect. All the women who work there are funny and kind and completely supportive, no matter where your self-confidence level might be. A wonderful shop with a great selection. I love the intimate feel of the shop- I had a Sunday afternoon appointment and my friends and I were the only ones there. No appointment needed on Saturdays, but required all other days. The bulk of dresses are in the $500-$1,500 range for dresses worn once by a bride, or used as the floor dress at a bridal shop. There is a rack of dresses below $500, designer dresses around $2,000 and some new customizable local designs. I found my Maggie Sotero dress there. The owner Emilie is great. She's very helpful, and listened carefully to my wants. I never felt pressured or like she was just trying to make a sale. I don't think anyone had an appointment after me, because I was able to try on 6 dresses and went over the standard 1 hour. This is an awesome, different kind of bridal boutique. Located in the upstairs area of a main street of downtown Berkeley, it's totally a different world in here. In the front there are a few new gowns that you can order. In the back, there are racks and racks of gowns, by type of gowm (ballgown, etc.) and size. There's even a $500 and under rack in the dressing area. Dressing area has 2 rooms, one sofa for guests, and a few chairs. There is a bathroom in the front area. It's quaint and small, but gets the job done. There's a stage with mirrors for the bride to try out and present the gowns. These are used, vintage, and consignment gowns, meaning you will be getting a beautiful wedding gown at a much reduced price. That said, you should try to find a gown that somewhat fits you, since that actual piece will be your gown, and while alterations people are miracle workers, there's only so much they can do and/or you can afford. The staff are friendly, and good at pulling things that they think will fit you well. All in all, a good experience and worth checking into if you're on a budget. read more

I came here after visiting three bridal boutiques on the recommendation of my sister. I had tried on about 20 beautiful, yet expensive wedding dresses at the other shops. At each one, the employees were opinionated, rushed to make a sale & to get you out of their business. Emerald City was a dream come true! Emilie has a way about her that immediately puts you at ease. She's so sweet & genuinely wants you to find THE dress you can say yes to. She asks you some questions about the styles, colors & embellishments you like & off she goes to hit the racks; pulling you gowns that fit your description. She even lets you & your guests (I brought two) browse the racks as well. I was very pleased with the selection & condition of each dress. I went in to this shop (having never been here before) with a preconceived notion that I would not find a dress. I found THREE that I loved and had a very difficult time deciding! The one I eventually chose after some serios though (and retrying them on several times) was extremely popular on Pintrest. I found the pictures online and Emilie said she felt very fortunate to have it in her store. It had a small tear in the lace that could easily be fixed. For that reason, she knocked a couple hundred dollars off the asking price (with the seller's permission of course). I ended up purchasing what was originally a $6,000 dress (when bought new) for just $2700. A huge savings!!! I also found a dainty little jeweled belt for only $60. I'm reviewing from the standpoint of someone who had their gown in this shop (on consignment). Like most brides, I had an emotional attachment to my wedding dress. The careful way these guys dealt with my dress made me feel they'd take good care of it and pass it on to its next beautiful bride. They encouraged me to check in from time to time, which I did. When interest was not that high, they made suggestions (take the added shoulder straps off, reduce the price a bit) but always made sure I was okay with changes and never pushed. I continued to check in, each time choosing to leave the dress there. I appreciated having this option. Today I checked in again. They'd be happy to keep the dress there but suggested I may have better luck online. In fact, they suggested a specific site and told me about how much the dress is listed for. So I'll be picking up the dress and switching gears. All in all, I'm very happy with this shop's service and recommend it to others. I'll also shop there for evening gowns! I'm so glad I decided to swing by Emerald City Gowns before my other wedding dress shopping appointments that I had later that afternoon! With Emilie's professional and calm guidance, I ended up purchasing my wedding dress here the day after my visit! The dress was heavily discounted, and since it had been previously worn and altered, it fit my body almost perfectly off the rack (some hemming was needed, since I'm a shorty). Emerald City was the first dress shop I hit up - I arrived with a couple of ideas in mind (vintage, lace, maybe sleeves?). Emilie greeted me warmly and listened to my thoughts. There were many things that I loved about the visit, but I'll just list the following: 1) After pulling some dresses that matched what I initially wanted, she asked more questions about the wedding and offered some great dress alternatives that I never would have thought of but ended up loving. 2) Emilie provided specific, helpful tips that helped me decide between different dresses, but I never felt pressured to fall in love with a dress or purchase one on the spot. 3) Since I was flying solo, she took photos and videos of me so I could show my trusted advisors later that day. I found this shop through Yelp. I'm kind of a last minute bride, since my engagement is only 4 months long. I have never been dress shopping and wanted to look around to see what suited me since I hadn't really narrowed down a style yet. Yelp says this business is NOT by appointment only. So we didn't call and decided to walk in. The business is behind 4th st upstairs so I called once we had gotten to the address to find out how to get to the actual building. Emily answered the phone and told me she didn't have time for a walk in but she could give me a quick tour of the store. Once we got there we started looking around. The place itself is quaint, well organized, and very charming. However my experience with the customer service was the opposite. Basically she told me "you should book appointments for bridal fittings" while hinting that since I didn't know what I was doing, my business and I were a nuisance. I told her Yelp said the shop wasn't by appointment only and she said "oh really, ok I'll look into that..." And when I told her my budget was under $1000 she said "oh... Then you should just look at this rack and see if you even like anything." Sorry I'm wasting your time? We decided to take our business elsewhere. There's also a sign that says you can only try on 4 dresses, supposedly since they're trying to maintain the condition of consignment. But they also have 2 little dogs running around the store so..? Even though I didn't buy a dress here, I highly recommend it for anyone wedding dress shopping. I didn't expect a consignment shop to have such a large selection, but they have a huge variety to choose from--all sorted by size and including the height of the previous owner. You'll find many of the traditional styles here, but I also saw some that were outside of the box that were still very cool. I was really close to buying a dress here but decided to go in a different direction. It's definitely worth checking out if you're looking to save a little money and/or go a little "greener" for your wedding. I found my freaking wedding dress here! I went to some traditional shops and found some nice dresses but nothing that really tickled me. I always knew I wanted to try to find a consignment dress, and definitely starting to search 2 years before my wedding helped, because I think you need a lot of luck to find your dress consignment. You can tell that the gowns in this shop are definitely curated and well-loved. Also, the woman assisting us (the owner actually but her name escapes me) definitely got a good idea of what I was looking for and helped me refine my style. I ended buying one off the sale rack ($250 WHAT WHAT), and it ended up being so perfect! It even fits me perfectly! I thought I had wanted another look, but I ended up finding the perfect dress that was too perfect for me to even imagine before! Emelie didn't seem to care too much about providing a good experience. This store had great yelp reviews, and I was really looking forward to getting to try on some sample/consignment gowns. I came with my mom and my maid of honor, and we were all really disappointed with the experience. Emelie seemed friendly enough at first and asked some questions, but I didn't feel like she was really listening, especially after I said that I hadn't checked out their pinterest board and picked out specific gowns I wanted to try on. Their pinterest board is a nice idea, but some dresses have size/price information, and others don't, so I didn't want to waste my time sifting through all of them. I was expecting the staff at the store to be able to pull dresses I would like based on my input. I described what I was looking for, showed her gowns that I had previously tried on and liked, and she pulled three gowns for me. I tried them on and didn't like any of them. I tried to be as specific as possible about what I didn't like and what I was looking for instead, but Emelie didn't really seem to want to pull any more dresses for me. She found one or two more that were nothing like I was asking for. When I asked if she had anything else she thought I might like, Emilie told me to look at their pinterest board and come back if I saw anything specific that I liked. Not at all what we were expecting after previous bridal salon experiences where the consultants really seem to care about you and your wedding and your style. She didn't seem to want to help at all, and we left after only 20 minutes. There are so many other bridal salons in the area, I would not recommend this place to anyone unless you see the exact gown in the right size that you want on their pinterest board first. Overall - GREAT. But that's not why I deducted 1.5 stars. Dresses: beautiful, elegant, well-kept, and most are in good condition. Appointment service: Emilie really knows her stuff and she can instantly find the dress of your dreams in your size without you telling her anything. Cost: Pretty decent prices for all her consignment dresses. Business policy (WARNING): My main point here, she is not flexible about her policies. She charged me a nonrefundable $100 to hold the dress for 1 week, which in my mind was short and expensive. It was a beautiful dress and very lovely, but I felt a little stressed about making a decision right there on the spot or losing the dress. So I took the gamble and put down $100. Honestly, it was a beautiful dress but was over my budget at the time especially if I had to make a few hems and adjustments. Now I understand the word "nonrefundable", but I was hoping that she would be lenient (given that I really love her dresses and believe I would find one at her place) and help me apply that fee to another dress. But her uncompromising attitude about her "nonrefundable policy" made me feel cheated out of $100 when she could have made another $300 at least if I had bought another dress. I think she has a great talent and really runs her business well. This is the only problem I had with her and honestly I did not end up buying the dress due to lack of trust. read more

Negative stars! I had the weirdest experience today! I went to try on wedding dresses and the sales girl refused leave the dressing room for me to change. She insisted I get naked in front of her! She said she needed to make sure the dresses stayed in good condition. She was really awkward about it and rude. I promptly left. Reviews from brides who sold their gown here seem to be lacking...so here we go: I couldn't stand the idea of keeping a gown that made me SO happy tucked away in storage. I knew it would make me sad just seeing it there, knowing I'd never wear it again (we're talking about a big ballgown here, not something I'd wear to dinner on my anniversary). Trying to sell it myself seemed like a logistical nightmare. I was discouraged after looking into another consignment shop in SF, which basically had the right to reduce the price every thirty or sixty days without needing my approval. After charging about $250 for cleaning, I could have LOST money. A friend suggested Emerald City, told me she'd sold her gown through them and it was incredibly easy. I brought my gown in pre-cleaning and Emilie decided she would take it. We discussed pricing, and the fact--this is important--that the price would be set for six months. No reductions without my approval. At the end of the six months, it would be on me to call her and discuss if we want to reduce the price, if I want to take it back, etc. If/when the dress sells, you get 50% of the selling price, which was pretty standard. Emilie directed me to a local cleaners, who took care of my dress for the oh-so-reasonable price of $125. Best part, Emilie picked up the dress when it was ready, and it was officially for sale! That was about three months ago, and I got my check on Friday:) A little twinge of sadness that my dress is no longer "my" dress, but I love that it's making another bride somewhere very happy! read more

I've been to a lot of bridal stores, but I must say - for a 500 sq. foot consignment boutique, Emerald City Gowns has a nice selection of gorgeous wedding gowns. The owner, Emily, is lovely and she also carries some beautiful vintage dresses and accessories that I haven't seen anywhere else. Pricing is also great. I tried on two designer gowns (that looked phenomenal), which were priced at 1/3 of the retail price. I'm still searching for THE dress, but would love to find it at Emerald City. Emily has a great eye for what she brings in, and since she gets new merchandise regularly - I'll be back to see what she brings in next. Thank you for the delightful visit, Emily! After sharing my disappointment with my online wedding gown purchases with my supervisor, she highly recommended that I check out Emerald City Gowns. She had bought her own wedding gown at this wonderland. I booked a Sunday morning appointment in November with my mom. The entrance is a little tricky to find but my mom arrived early and staked out the area. We walked upstairs to be warmly greeted by our bridal consultant, Rachel. She asked my dress size, what I looked for in my wedding dress, and how much I wanted to spend. She came back with a few gowns to try on. Her knowledge was spot on. I loved just about every dress she picked out. It was quite a difficult decision to make. What I enjoyed about Rachel was that she was honest, friendly, and not pushy. She added that the shop continuously receives dresses. Luckily for me, I knew I had found the dress once I put it on. This was seriously the most fun gown-shopping experience I had! I've had good experiences at other bridal shops, but Emilie was on another level. I saw a help wanted sign posted on her door with the disclaimer that you must love playing dress up. Well, I hope she finds someone who makes playing dress up as fun as she made it for me on that Saturday morning I went in! :) I described what I liked and what worked from my previous shops, and she immediately started pulling dresses in my budget. After a couple were pulled, she helped me put them on, and I (and my bridesmaid who was accompanying me) would tell her what was working and what wasn't. This would give her ideas, and she would then pull yet another dress (still staying in my budget). When we found "the one" (at least, for this shop, I'm of the belief that there are many "ones" and you could have at least one at each shop :P), she put veils and tiaras on me and had me stand on a pedestal which made my pictures look really great. It was as if it was my wedding day! I stood on a pedestal at Trudy's and elsewhere...but...Emilie's charismatic and fun personality just took it to another level. So I actually had 3 really great options here, and I would be super happy with 2 of them. I'm still shopping, but even if someone else buys those 2 dresses I was thinking of, I'm pretty confident that if I come back another time, she'll have yet more dresses that I would love, since she gets new shipments in all the time. Many of those dresses have never even been worn, or are sample dresses, but the used ones are also in excellent condition. Emerald City Gowns was my first stop in searching for my wedding dress. I was able to book my appointment one day in advance and once everything was finalized, I received an email from owner Emilie Hofmann with information about where to park and what I should bring for my appointment. The shop itself is small and easy to miss, but my sister and I were able to find metered parking right in front of the store. Emilie was a pleasure to work with. She was genuinely friendly and helpful. Although she made suggestions for dresses that she thought would work for me, she was never pushy. I appreciated her recommendations because I was able to see what worked with my body type and what didn't. She also opened my eyes for certain styles that I never even considered. Emilie helped me find a champagne, lace, Maggie Sottero corset gown that was lovely and was in line with what I was looking for. The price was great and it seemed to fit my body almost perfectly. But it wasn't THE dress and I ended up leaving the store empty handed. However, I was very pleased that my first wedding dress shopping experience was a positive one and I have Emilie to thank for that! Keep in mind that this is a consignment store, so the gowns are most likely used and altered. But everything is clean and organized and I spotted some great designer dresses and accessories including Vera Wang and Badgley Mischka. This place is fantastic and I would recommend it to any bride. There is a great selection of dresses you can view on the store's website via pinterest, and even more in the actual store. Emilie easily accommodated my large group of 8-9 people. I told her what I had in mind for my dress (brought in some pictures taken off her pinterest) and budget and right away she got what I was looking for and pulled some beautiful dresses. Emilie wasn't pushy at all and was up-front about what each dress would need in terms of alterations. As soon as I tried on "my" dress I knew it was the one and my entourage agreed! $700 plus tax and I'll only need to sew bra cups in for alterations. I don't know why more bridal-consignment shops don't exist, it's such a great idea. My only complaint is I found my dress in half an hour and the experience was over too fast! :) read more

I had a truly fantastic experience with Emerald City. I visited three times to shop, and was planning to visit again a few months later... but found a gown I couldn't part with almost 10 months before the wedding! Emilie, the owner, is incredibly lovely and helpful. She is complimentary and positive but honest--something I really appreciated as a solo shopper until the last visit (when I brought my fiancé, mother, and sister to give me feedback on the finalists). She also encourages customers to try styles they might not gravitate towards, which is great fun and helpful when you don't really know what you're after, as I didn't. The selection of gowns really can't be beat: because all of them are either secondhand or samples, the range of designers and styles is magnificent, with new ones arriving all the time rather than seasonally. The range of sizes is also fantastic--I had a lot to choose from in my street size 10-12. Personally, I found the prices to be great (once I'd come to terms with how much bridal gowns normally cost). Given that these are all perfect-condition designer gowns, some of them with costly alterations done (bustling, hemming), buying them for half the retail price is phenomenal. After storing my gown in the closet for the last six months and planning many other aspects of my wedding, I tried it on again today. Perfect. I might love it more now than I did then! P.S. I went to a local bridal event and was super disappointed. I yelped nearby bridal shops and Emerald City popped up. The shop is clean and well organized. The owner and her employee were both amazing and knowledgable. The gowns were fantastic prices and discounted from the original retail prices. The owner has great taste when buying for her shop and when helping you choose a silhouette that works for you. I found 4 dresses I loved, and then I found the one!!! Came here to sell my gown and was blown away how fast it sold. I was a winter bride and really wanted to get my dress out there for next year's spring brides. Emilie offered a fair price, and even suggested that I post pics of the dress on their Pinterest page so other brides could get an idea of what it looks like on an actual person. By the time I got around to posting pics the dress was sold, and my check was in the mail. I do admit I'm a bit sad it went so quickly, but really glad not to have that giant (pretty) dress I will never wear again out of my closet. I had a really wonderful experience at Emerald City and with Emilie. I came in on a whim soon after getting engaged, thinking I would just check things out before my mom came into town to help me find a dress. I didn't expect much because I figured a bridal consignment shop couldn't have too many nice dresses. I was totally wrong. Emilie has a small space but it was loaded with gorgeous gowns. During my appointment I was the only one in the shop, which meant Emilie gave her full attention to me. I told her I was only interested in seeing dresses under $1,000, and she was easily able to find at least 10 or 12 in that price range near my size. I liked all of them--and they were all different--but the very last dress I tried on was perfect. It fit me like it was made for me, and I loved the style. The dress had been marked down from its original consignment price because Emilie found some discoloration along the bottom hemline after it came in. The price was great but I was worried about whether or not cleaning could fix the discoloration, so Emilie even arranged to meet me at a dry cleaner to talk about it with them. Such wonderful service! The cleaner said it would definitely come out, so I bought the dress a few days later when my mom came into town. I'm thrilled with it! I know that Emilie has dresses for every price range and in all sizes. She also has a small selection of veils and other adornments. I haven't found "the dress" here yet, but I really hope I do because Emilie has been so helpful - scheduling multiple appointments, showing me dress after dress, and helping me figure out what I am looking for. The shop has a great selection of styles in all sizes and price points. One of the nicest things about consignment is that it is ok to take photos of yourself in the dresses, which is a huge benefit since my mom is out of state. I was a little apprehensive about looking for a dress on my own without my mom or a friend to give opinions, but Emilie has been great to work with. As for the reviewer who was uncomfortable changing with someone in the room - that is standard at every bridal boutique I have been to, so I'm not sure why this was a surprise. I was looking for a tea length dress, and I called this store to see if they had some available. They told me they had several and when I went to try some on, their staff were friendly, helpful, and fun to work with. I was also really pleased to find that they had some in larger sizes to try on, as this is hard to find. I didn't end up getting my dress there because none of the dresses were quite what I was looking for, but I would strongly recommend them for great customer service and having a range of options. read more

Emerald City Gowns was absolutely adorable! Did not check out their dress selection, but they had a huge variety of veils and it was nice to not spend $500 since I bought a used one. Still spent over $100, but for a pricey gown, figured that was chump change. Would totally recommend friends checking out this spot and may even resell my veil back to them. read more

Although my daughter (visiting from Phoenix, AZ) was unable to find what she was looking for, the young lady who assisted her was kind, courteous, professional and truly wanted my daughter to find EXACTLY what she wanted, even if it was at another store. I wish I had payed attention to the name of the young lady was so helpful!! I highly recommend this bridal shop. Emily, the owner, is amazing. I made a Saturday appointment and me and my guests were the only ones in the shop. The salon is spacious, great light, and I just got a good vibe. I was looking for a lace gown under $1000...hence coming to a consignment shop. Quality is not lacking here. Dressing room is huge and Emily is gracious and helpful. I love that they have most dresses on Pinterest. She already knew my style based on the pins I had liked from her store. She was a great listener and pulled what I said I wanted. Plus, she pulled a couple wild cards based on what I told her about my winter wedding. There is a nice sitting space for a couple guests (I would not bring more than 3) and a pedestal with mirrors and great light for pictures. I ended up falling in love with one of her wild cards...I got my gown for 25% off retail! Success! I would recommend to every bride in a heartbeat. read more

I went Emerald City Glows last week and it was such a great experience! I visited the boutique after going to two other also great stores. On Saturday ECG only takes walk-ins and my mother and I were helped after about a 20 minute wait. The boutique looks to be a large studio with three separate rooms. I didn't know how much variety to expect because I knew that EMC was known for selling consignment dresses. I was pleasantly happy to find that it is an independently, smaller boutique, with a wide variety of looks. Bohemian to ballroom, to mermaid with floral bedding and lace to simple satin gowns! The sales associate and I walked down the aisles and I told her the style I was looking to see. I had specific ideas, but honestly, I was so tired from wedding shopping for five hours, she had to rely on my ramblings and her own judgment. Sorry, lady. As I tried on gowns the sales associate stayed with me and paid attention to me even though the mirror area was shared with another bridal party. At EMC on Saturdays you can only try on 4 gowns so after the first three I was pretty stressed & feeling indecisive. However, the associate did a great job pulling together what she could tell I was responding positive to and brought out a last dress. I tried it on and I fell in love. Yes I cried. In addition to my beautiful wedding gown, what I really appreciated is that - though I am indecisive and was probably a mess- the owner personally came over to check on me and speak with my mom. She clearly knows that this time is stressful for brides and wanted me to feel some sense of calm and control. Like, you've got this girl! It's about you! I would recommend ECG again, and again, and again. I love their spirit, selection and overall experience. Tip: - Saturdays are walk-in. Try on 4 dress max. -Reiterate prices before you try it on -Allows wedding party to come, but space is small so please be considerate -Ask for ideas (they have a great eye) read more

Sold my gown in 3 days. Very easy process. Owner was friendly and knowledgeable. It's obvious that she knows her market and her price points are spot on. Only downside is the 50% split seems a bit high (60/40 would appeal more, of course); and there is a credit card fee I wasn't aware of. But it's a lovely store in a fun, trendy shopping area with good restaurants too. Would make a nice outing. Finally, it's a good feeling to know that someone else will love my gown like I did. read more

Really nice bridal consignment shop for eco-friendly brides on a budget! My mother and I accompanied my engaged sister on her search for her dress. This is the second shop we've been to. The owner was very friendly, attentive, and showing great care in helping my sister. Even as a consignment shop, there was a great selection with lots of accessories as well. The shop is located on the second floor with access from a small parking lot. It's sort of hidden to look out for the signs to find it. Definitely worth visiting for the eco-bride-on-a-budget.
