I had been going here for a couple of years thinking they were an ok auto shop near my house. Then my husband brought in his car and they charged him $1800 and the problem persisted. I had my brakes down here at the end of 2016 and from that moment on they were always making noise. I kept taking it back and they would tell me something different, or blamed it on the city. Then I had an exhaust problem. I brought the car in and they told me it was going to be a $1,000. Skeptical, I brought it to a mechanic near my family home and they charged me $75 to fix the problem. Having such a better experience with the mechanic near my family home, I decided to bring him the brake problem. I am not a heavy breaker and my 1st set of brakes lasted me many many years. I am now replacing the entire brake job Emerson supposedly did. It has been a little over a year that these 'new' brakes were put on. I put new in quotes, because the mechanic is not so sure they were ever changed, yet I paid for them. Please take what this shop says with a grain of salt. Huge waste of time and money. Took my car in because the check engine light was on. They said I needed a new catalytic converter. Paid close to $2k to have this replaced. Light comes back on. They say I need new oxygen sensors. Pay for those. Light comes back on. They say just keep driving it around. I have my annual state inspection coming up so I need this done. It fails the emissions test and they say cat isn't ready, just keep driving. Bring it back after a few weeks, they seem to not know what to do. Fails another emissions test. They suggest replacing the catalytic converter again. I ask them for a refund because they didn't fix the issue and all of a sudden they tell me my car has passed it's inspection. This is great news but when I come pick it up, the check engine light comes back on. I finally take it to a Ford service center and they say all the parts like fine and they wouldn't replace the catalytic converter, so clearly Emerson had no idea what to do and we're just making complete guesses that kept costing me lots of time and energy. Would not trust them anymore and definitely would not recommend! read more

Super service and very covid safe. I needed an inspection sticker and was so relieved to see they wear masks and wipe down car interior after service. I stopped at another shop today and left because they had no precautions in place (not even masks). I will be back for more service next week. Thank you thank you to Emerson! I'm a graduate student in MA, but my car is registered out of state. I needed an emissions inspection specific for my state and they were so accommodating and quick! Great service and great communication there! They even fixed my brake light that I was unaware was out. Would highly recommend. Outstanding place to get your car repaired. Yes - The building looks like crap and needs a major makeover, but don't judge a book by its cover. All of the mechanics are very friendly, the work gets done on time, and my repair bills are consistently so low, I honestly struggle to understand how these guys make money. For years, I got raped by a local foreign-car specialist, but, as long as I'm in Southie, I will bring my car to Art at Emerson and recommend to anyone else who has a car problem to do so as well. I recently needed a full brake replacement. The aforementioned foreign-car guy quoted me $1,650. Art did the work for $600, and I haven't yet crashed into anything from the loss of brakes. read more

Honest, real deal mechanics! I get my car inspected here every year, I blew a fuse in my car and they replaced it and charged me $5..yep only 5 bucks! Which is awesome because they obviously didn't put any labor into changing it and only charged me for the part, which I really appreciated. I have been to Emerson several times and everyone there has been uniformly nice and service was shockingly fast. Most recently, for instance, I dropped off my car at 7:15 and got a call at 8:30. They have also helped me out with small things and did not charge me, which was incredibly kind -- on one occasion it was my service engine light going on the morning of a 700 mile drive which was pretty stressful! I've been taking my car to Emerson for about 2 years. It's a 10 yr old jeep with 130k+ miles on it, so I've been there a few times for a range of services, from basic maintenance (oil change/sticker) to having it towed there (snapped serpentine belt and engine overheat/stall out). First off, they are extremely nice, very patient with a somewhat car-ignorant girl (once near hysterics.) They don't try to screw you over on price and will get the work done in a timely manner. They really work with you to find the best solution too, whether it's sourcing a part from elsewhere or holding off on less crucial work. You can trust these guys, reason enough to go there. It can get backed up at times, seems to be a popular neighborhood place, which again if anything is a really good sign. These guys are great. I've been here a few times ranging from inspection sticker to new brakes to a new transmission fluid line. Yes you have to call in advance to see when they can fit you in, but they are the best in Southie so they are busy - I consider this a hazard of working with any good business. They always have my car finished when they say they will and are careful about the cost. They let me know what they did and why so I understand. This auto body shop is such a great convience to have in South Boston. You can call up in the morning and drop your car off., The owner has been working on cars since he was 15 years old. Father and son run the business now. Very reasonable prices, but most of all there is a trust that when you leave your car with them your not going to get ripped off. read more

I had an issue with my oil pressure and took my car into Emerson to get it checked out. They initially called me back and let me know that the oil pump was broken and that I'd need a new one. Simple enough, they replaced the oil pump and told me my car was ready to go. When I go to pick the car up I noticed that the steering wheel was making a weird noise so I called them back. The guy told me that my power steering fluid was low and that they would've filled it up if not for the fact that they didn't have any fluid in stock at the time. I immediately found it weird that they wouldn't tell me this but I took my car back anyway. They called me again and told me it was ready to go. Yet again the steering wheel was making the same noise and I knew that the initial problem hadn't been fixed. So I took it back in a third time and they told me that I needed a new power steering fluid line because mine was leaking and that I would have to pay for the new part. Needless to say there were no issues with the steering wheel until Emerson did work on my car and after the runaround they put me through I would never recommend this business. read more

Emerson's is the best! When we moved to South Boston two years ago I was worried about finding an honest, reliable mechanic. (Our previous mechanic of 20 years was irreplaceable). But I must say Emerson's has done an incredible job replacing our previous mechanic. I have a BMW coupe and from inspections to brake work to other issues, Emerson's has taken care my car!! They do great work and are trustworthy. Both Art and Junior are personable and so helpful! They do not take appointments and do work on a first come-first serve basis. Suspicious business practices and significant waste of my personal time. Initially dropped off car for inspection. Received rejected sticker, was told it was due to damage on the panel of the rear driver side. Did not receive a quote for the fix etc. Girlfriend had the repair done at a garage her family is familiar with (they don't do inspections), again dropped it off at emerson for inspection. Got a phone call saying the car was rejected, it needs new tires. I haven't put any mileage on the car since bringing it in. Then receive a quote at $144 per tire & installation, no tread warranty tires. Meanwhile I know I want and need brake work done and have no desire to pay for tires to come off twice. Won't be going back to Emerson, huge waste of my time. read more

Friendly, fast, and reasonably priced. I called on Monday asking to get an oil change and to check my horn that had stopped working. I was told to drop it off any day that week after Monday, so I dropped it off Tuesday morning. By early afternoon, they called and informed me the oil change was done and the issue with the horn was easily solved and fixed. I picked it up the following morning (as I couldn't get out of work on time to get it that day - which they agreeably said was no problem), and was pleasantly surprised by a lower price than anticipated. Been here twice. First time was decent. Second time they balanced my 2 left tires incorrectly for $80 where I had to go to another shop to get fixed and drove much better afterwards. Also told me I need all brakes done and only need rear brakes. 2 very different experiences, but they did not do a good job last time I went. read more

I can't say enough good things about Emerson Auto. I've taken my car in a few times and each time am beyond happy with the service, the honesty, the fast turnaround. My most recent visit was after the Volvo dealer claimed I needed repairs that would have easily cost me $2k. I took the list to Emerson for a second opinion. I am happy to report that of 4-5 major items that the Volvo dealer swore would have me breaking down in no time and put me /my car in danger, Emerson validated one item and did the repair in a timely (and less expensive) manner. When I went to start my car the last couple of days, it was having difficulties and making weird noises... and the dreaded "check engine" light came on. I live right down the street from Emerson, so dropped it off out of pure convenience on my way to work and waited for the call to hear of the damage. I got a call later (with bad news) about what the code meant for the engine light. However, he proceeded to tell me that he felt it was best I take it to my dealership for this type of thing based on the code. He didn't feel comfortable trying to figure it out (and in the process charging me fees as he goes). I don't know about you, but for someone with ZERO car knowledge, such as myself, this made me feel good. No, great. It made me feel great to know he actually had my best interest in mind versus just "playing" around to fix things and charge customers. I've been coming to this particular auto repair for 5 years. The guy who runs the place ( I assume the owner) is a guy named Art. He's a bit rough around the edges, but overall a great guy and very fair. As mentioned in some of the other reviews, he does not try to up charge you or up sell and repairs only what is needed on your car. I had once brought my car to the Nissan Dealer who told me I needed $3K worth of work. Art did it for $450 and the car ran like a top. While some of the people's reviews here have said that they are slow, I find them to be exactly the opposite. They are not as fast as a dealership that has 16 mechanics on board, but I usually drop my car off in the morning (for minor to moderate repairs/service) and by the time I am done with work it's always ready. He also will call you if something unexpected is found that will significantly affect the expected price. read more

The fact that I can walk there from home in 5 mins is another added bonus but more importantly they are honest and reasonably priced. This place is amazing. I actually live right across the street from them. So friendly, and very honest. Really what else can you ask for? They've let me borrow their portable battery jumper as well before. The best thing was when my Jeep wrangler was leaking from the fuel line. Must say I think that this shop is outstanding.Had to get a sticker and the gentlemen said he would be about 5 minutes.They took my car in to the sticker bay in less than 3 minutes.Had a bulb that was out .They replaced it and only charged me $7.00 with labor.I was on my way in less than a total of 30 minutes.They sure are pretty quick at attending to the customer. read more

Ive been taking 2 cars here for the last few years. These guys have always done a great job at an excellent price. So far I've done tires, state inspections, oil changes, had check engine lights dealt with, and exhaust work done. They've turned the job around fast, have let me supply cheaper aftermarket parts in some cases to keep my own costs down and have always been honest and upfront with the work required. One tip: Call ahead to make sure they'll be able to work you in that day just in case. read more

After several good experiences here I had a really bad one. I asked them to check my car over thoroughly before I went on a 2000 mile trip with my young daughter. They assured me they had done so, including checking the brake pads. I about 300 miles into the trip I started hearing a bad screeching noise from a back wheel. I called and they said sometimes some little piece of metal on the brake pad got misaligned, and it would rub down and I shouldn't worry, unless I heard a "grinding" noise. The screeching continued, I called again 500 miles later and was reassured again. Called again on the return trip and they said if my wheel wasn't hot I shouldn't worry. It turned out when I got home and went back to my old trusted mechanic that the brake pad was worn almost to nothing. Also, my exhaust system was so rusted it was barely hanging on to the car. No sure what they "checked" but apparently it wasn't very thorough. read more
