Tried this place last week with a group of friends and had a great time. Valet parking is always a relief on Ventura Blvd. and I must say they were fast and courteous even though they were being hassled and at 7:30PM on a Saturday night they were very busy. There is no stated fee for valet here, so I gave the guy $5 as a tip and he was very nice. Walking in we had a choice of sitting in the main room or the patio, which is indoors but looks and feels like outdoor dining. We chose the outdoor feel and were taken to a table exactly at 7:30, the time of our reservation. We asked for a round table, which is better for 6 or 8 people who all want to talk to each other, and that's what we got. I should also mention that the temperature in the room was perfect. They have outdoor heaters and they keep them at the right level, so its not too hot and not too cool. They will adjust to your taste, and we asked them twice to do so and they kept it temperate during the whole meal, and after. Most of the patrons at this place are older, in the 50 to 60 to 70 range, well dressed, and they appear to be a classy group, who look like they can afford to eat pretty much any where they want. The bar serves a nice selection of wines, but we had two bottles that we brought ourselves, and they brought glasses and poured the wine with no fee. We did order a third bottle, so I am not sure of their policy regarding corkage fees. I started with the chopped salad, which was fresh and cold and came with a wonderful Italian dressing. A nice selection of lettuce was mixed with garbonzo beans, salami, cheese, pepperoncinis and peppers...very tasty. (Excuse my Italian spelling). For a second course I got the penne with marinara sauce and chicken marsala, and my friend got the white fish. The chicken was excellent, just what a marsala should be, not too sweet and a bit tangy. And the penne was fine too. It was cooked properly, al dente, and the sauce was not too sweet and not acidic...just right...as good as it gets. The fish was superb too. Properly cooked, not too well done, very light and flaky. The sauce on the fish, which was ordered on the side, was good too, with garlic and tomatoes in a light cream sauce which, like the marinara sauce, had not a trace of acidity. The hit of the evening, which was somewhat of a surprise, was the fresh, was a fabulous hot pita bread that was brought to the table, and for which there was no charge. Actually, we never ordered it..they just brought it out. And, they brought two of them, and the were so good we asked for two more. And, at no charge!
They were giant pitas, about 18 inches in diameter, that were in the oven until they blew up like balloons. Served hot and right out of the oven they were heavenly with a little butter or olive oil. Oh yes, if you ask they will bring you fresh, hot garlic to combine with your butter or olive oil, which spread over the regular bread is great, and spread over the hot pita is to die for. Needless to say, I was totally stuffed when we left. My only regret is that I could not eat more, the food was that good. Pleasantly surprising, the prices here are very very reasonable, actually low for this quality of place in this area of town, and a really great deal for what you get here. And the servers are really good too. Very pleasant and helpful in every way, they were there whenever we needed anything and always smiling. I think this restaurant has been here for a long time, and the regulars, mostly older folks, keep coming back. With good reason. read more
