Needed to get out of the office for lunch this holiday season and decided to drop in to Emmy Squared Pizza in the Navy Yard! The waitress was very nice and answered all my questions about the menu and any lunch deals that they had (they do $5 for the third slice for lunch). There was only one person taking orders, so even though it the restaurant was pretty empty, it took a little longer to place my order and get my food. Emmy Squared does deeper dish Detroit Style pizza. I really enjoyed the crispy crust and the chewy-ness of the pizza. The Emmy wasn't on the menu, but it is a vegetarian pizza with what looked like white sauce, cheese, peppers, and mysterious yet tasty green drizzle. The cheese is fairly standard, red sauce and cheese! Both tasted good, but I think I preferred the tried-and-true cheese pizza. Pretty solid pizza experience, however definitely with some faults. Came in a while ago for some quick pizza, and we loved the look of the restaurant. Great vibes, super clean, and pretty solid service. In terms of food, we loved almost everything except for the vegan pizza. The mushroom pizza was incredible; the sauce on top was so flavorful and not too much to where the pizza was soggy. The margherita pizza was also solid, nice balance of cheese and sauce. The caesar salad we started off with was also flavorful without being too saucy. The vegan pizza when it first came to us was unfortunately undercooked. We had to send it back, but when it did it was a little burnt. We were pretty disappointed with this outcome, because you could tell the flavors would have been great if properly cooked. I had the Detroit-style pizza and it did not disappoint here, generally speaking. It's hard to find a good Detroit-style pizza in D.C. and here they make it kind of a specialty item where you have to pay more for such style instead of presenting it as a standard (unfortunately). The ingredients were top-notch - and the pizza was customized to have pepperoni, mushroom, and burrata cheese on top of the classic red sauce. So I have two suggestions for management to see improvement: 1. The pepperoni needed to be more crispy 2. Don't serve the burrata cold on top of a hot pizza. Serve it room-temperature at least, if you're not wanting to have it heated. Getting this right would earn the place a perfect 5 stars. I dropped by with my partner after a soccer game at Audi Stadium. She's gluten-free, and I'm gluten-full. Neither one of us had ever tried a Detroit-style pizza. Let me tell you, it was amazing. She said the gluten-free pizza was the most amazing she's ever had. I tried it as well and I agree. I have no idea what kind of magic they summoned to conjure up a fluffy crispy crust. It was a delicious pizza you could drop the "gluten-free" adjective from and no one would blink an eye. The gluten-full pizza was also amazing. Definitely one of the better pizzas I've had in town. Detroit-style pizza reminds me a little of Roman-style pizza. The crust is thicker and airy, like a focaccia. The bottom is crispy. There's a bit more sauce than other styles. Last but not least, we do have to mention our waiter Hafez, who was very friendly and accommodating. He answered all our questions about the gluten-free crust ingredients with a fantastic attitude and made our days and experience at Emmy Squared that much brighter. read more

We came to Emmy's for a work lunch. It's a short walk from the DOT, which makes it an ideal lunch spot. There's outdoor seating and plenty of indoor seating. It's super cute on the inside - kind of like a greenhouse, with lots of hanging ivy. I've never had Emmy's before as I don't live in the area but I believe they are a local chain. We did the DIY pizza and got a salad. The pizzas at Emmy's is a bit of a thicker crust. Reminds me of Detroit style. Came out at good time. Servers made sure to bring the salad later and then midway through the salad, the pizza came out. One pizza was good enough for our group of three. I've done both dine in and takeout, and have enjoyed both of my experiences. The drinks are solid, and the cheesy garlic sticks are a good, tasty option to split as a starter. My absolute favorite pizza here is the Roni Supreme. The pepperoni is nice and thick, and the Calabrian chili peppers are a nice addition that add a sweet and spicy kick to the pie. So far, I think Emmy Squared is a good addition to Navy Yard. I don't eat a lot of pizza these days, as I try to limit my gluten and dairy intake but when I do I expect it to be amazing. Emmy Squared was amazing. The staff were also great and were the icing on the cake. I arrived one day at 4:00, which is listed as their opening time online but when I arrived I was informed that there was some type of mix-up and that they actually don't open until 5:00pm. They were apologetic and asked me to come back in an hour. I didn't really want to but I actually had my heart set on pizza. When I arrived back an hour later, the managers were again very apologetic and took my to-go order. I forgot the assistant manager's name but he was great. I got the Colony Squared (red sauce, pepperoni, jalapeños, and honey) and they threw in an order of the Zeppole (fried dough dusted with cinnamon and sugar, served with a cream cheese dipping sauce). I didn't order a drink since I really wanted to put on my fat pants and eat my pizza at home but I was pleasantly surprised to see that cocktails are only priced at $10, though I suspect this is only an opening price as they test out the cocktail menu. When I was first handed my pizza I thought it looked a little small but as I walked with it down the street I realized that the pizza was actually very dense and heavy. It tasted even better. The crust was thick, soft, and slightly crunchy on the outside. The sauce was also flavorful and plentiful. The cheese was fine, really nothing special, though there could have been a little more. There also could have been a few more pepperonis. There were a lot of jalapeños and they certainly didn't lack any heat. The honey was pretty scarce though, there could have been a little more but it did add a nice contrast to the jalapeños. I would order this again. The zeppoles were fantastic. Fried cinnamony sugary dough balls. The cream cheese dipping sauce it came with was so good. It was thick and not overly sweet like some cream cheese sauces tend to be. I do think these would taste good with another sauce as well though, maybe dulce de leche or nutella. I'd definitely order it again. read more

Arrived about 5:00 p.m. for our reservation but we weren't on the books. I assume the lady that we spoke to was the manager and she informed us that she closed her books at 2 pm but we definitely could sit at the bar...that's my favorite place to sit so I wasn't upset at all! The chicken tenders were BOMB! We got ours with all the sauces...mumbo sauce, and the other two sauces. Then we ordered the burger and a pizza...the one with the pepperoni, pickles jalapeños, and honey. The pizza was good but I wanted it a little crispier. The burger was AMAZING with all of the ooey goodness a great burger has!!! I will definitely visit again but I won't sit at the bar. While Emmy squared pizza is one of my fav pizza chains in DC, for some reason this location just isn't as good as the Shaw location. I've only ordered takeout though, so I can't speak to the dine in experience. The Nashville hot chicken and vodka pizzas are my go to, and while the vodka pizza was fine, the Nashville hot chicken didn't live up to my expectations. The sauce wasn't as flavorful and the chicken had a different taste, though at least not like the chicken was bad. The cheese had also congealed and hardened, so I wasn't able to get a nice cheese pull (and I don't live so far away that it would've hardened that quickly). The crust was more burnt too, but that was a small concern compared to the rest. I still love Emmy squared but this location wasn't it for me. I'll probably just repress my pizza cravings on days the Shaw location is closed instead of attempting to satisfy my cravings in navy yard. read more

It is great Emmy Squared has added to their portfolio with a Navy Yard location in the Nationals ballpark/Captiol Riverfront area, as I have been a repeat customer at their Shaw location. They have only been opened a week in this new location and I am impressed already with their operations, not to mention their delicious food. Upon on our arrival, we were promptly greeted and given a heads up there would be a wait. They were able to seat us within the time estimated and the service throughout our meal was consistent without any long gaps of time before someone would stop by to check in on us or see if anything else was needed. For drink choices, the menu has plenty of custom drinks, beer, and other beverages. As for the food, the pizza is fantastic! They have a variety of pre-selected topped pizzas you can choose from or you build your own. The Chopped Cheese Waffle Fries are a great shareable with the table as well as the Cheesy Garlic Sticks. We didn't order the Cheesy Garlic Sticks this go around since we wanted to try some different items, but I have had at the Shaw location and they are delicious. Lastly, the burger and sandwich options do not take a back seat to the pizza. The Chicken Parm Sandwich is huge with two large patties, so brace yourself to take some leftovers dependent on what other items you may order. I had high hopes but meh... servers were friendly but that's where it ended. We never got silverware even after asking. I ended up taking it off another table. My girlfriend ordered a chicken sandwich and fries. The plate was hot however the chicken in the sandwich was ice cold and had been sitting out for a while. The fries arrived on a try and were not cooked all the way through. When she pulled a clump of them apart the potato was not cooked. I don't mean the inside of the fry, I mean the outside of the waffle fry wasn't even close to being finished. Unfortunately that was the high part of the meal. We ate one slice of the pizza and left the remainder on the table. This wasn't even worth a midnight snack or cold pizza for breakfast. The pizza definitely wasn't fresh, the sauce was so watery it seemed like they were running out and added water to get through the day.
