This place might be my new dc obsession. Ridiculously good pizza, garlic sticks that I'll have to get every time that are smothered in cheese, pesto and tomato sauce, and waffle fries (the best kind of fries) which I didn't even get to try this time. I know I want to try more of their menu, but am pretty confident I won't be able to resist getting the same two pies, colony and hot chicken. Any pizza with honey is pretty much a must, add jalapeños and it's a double must. Placed an order at 12:00, did not get our order till 12:50 and no update from the restaurant when it was available for pickup. I called them twice to make sure the order was ready to be picked up. I was a bit bummed by their takeout procedures. Coming to the food: 1. Cheesy Garlic Sticks (4/5) The bread was ok with good cheese but it was so bland. 2. The Margherita (3.5/5) It was presented well but again the taste was ok. I am also not a fan of thick slice. I did not enjoy it. 3. For a 'pizza place', the interior feels swanky and a place you could definitely bring a date, family, friends, coworker to impress. The menu and cocktails make it just casual enough. I like how the menu has red and white pizzas listed separately, plus a build your own option. We tried The Deluxe (red) and Good Paulie (white) to get a taste of both. I preferred the latter. This experience made me realize Detroit-style pizza has a place in my heart because it is *just* chewy enough. Crunchy, hard crust with a chewy, saucy core. While I enjoyed my experience, I'm not sure I'd pick it over other homegrown brands: &pizza, Ledo's, etc. Their pizzas are pretty tiny for the price ($15-20 a pie) and is cut into six square slices. Of course I chose the create your own pie, and yes the toppings are going to cost you $2 bucks in addition to the $18 pie, but...I was satisfied. Ok...I'm getting a little obsessed with Detroit Style Pizza! My SIL told me about this place and how good their DSP are. I decided to order for pick up (parking in the city is never great-go with someone to run in and grab the food). I ordered the Classic Pie, Brussels Sprout Salad and Banana Pudding. Inside is very cute (small/reservation is a must) - they have outdoor seating as well. The hostess is very nice when attending with your order. I must say my SIL was right!! Their DSP is absolutely delicious! The crunchiness, the flavor and the perfect amount of sauce on top!!! I enjoyed it a lot! The salad was great, too. Emmy Squared - Shaw [ES-S]. (4 stars). BLUF: Detroit-Style Pizza that has a nice crisp fluffy pan crust. The never ending, albeit delicious debate, rages on!! Who has the best pizza?? Is it Boston, Cali, Chicago, Detroit, or New York?? ---------- I've ordered a variety of pizzas and other items from ES-S and I have to say the pizzas are what I would come back for. Even though I'll always remain true to my love of Chicago Deep Dish Pizza, ES-S is an option that allows me to enjoy pizza with the BF because it is the closest to Chicago Deep Dish Pizza. The BF loves pizza so we eat it quite often... ---------- The Colony Pie. (4 stars). I chose to review The Colony Pie and give ES-S 4 stars regardless of its toppings because at the end of the day, we all know, the pizza crust is the key to an amazing pizza pie!! It's what separates the "good" from the "great"!! The best way that I can explain a Detroit-Style Pizza to someone who has never had one is: Imagine if a traditional (hand tossed) crust was crossbred with a deep dish pan pizza, their offspring would be a Detroit style pizza!! The best of two worlds?! Perhaps. If you're a Napoletana pizza (simple wood-fired pizza with a slight char) fan, this style of pizza may not be to your liking. The pizza itself is rectangular in shape and cut into 6 squares. The pizza is roughly 6" wide and 10" long. The crust itself is roughly 1/2-3/4" in height. The Colony Pie has a nice mixture of toppings: Red sauce, mozzarella, Ezzo pepperoni, pickled jalapeños, and honey. We like to add red onions to this pizza for a little additional flavor. As the red onions caramelize, they become soft and sweet. A nice addition to the play on sweet with some heat! The jalapeños still hold some heat so just be ready!! The honey wasn't really noticeable to either of us. The Ezzo pepperoni is an interesting and tasty sausage. Ezzo is the company, located in Columbus OH, that makes these sausages. It has a crispy texture and those pools of pepperoni oil are extremely inviting!! I love how a fatty oily pepperoni curls up and crackles after coming out of the oven!! Don't you??!! I definitely don't complain when the oil dribble down my chin. ;) The middle of the pizza is a little soft verging on mushy. So I have learned to always stick our pizza in the toaster oven or oven for 5 minutes as soon as we get home and that seems to do the trick!! Recently, ES-S has also been adding a note to each takeout box that recommends warming the pizzas up in an oven which is nice!! So getting back to the most key element of a great pizza... the crust. ES-S's crust is light and fluffy. But the slightly pan fried crispness is what makes me want to actually eat the crust!! That ever so slight crackle as my teeth sink into the crust is music to my ears!! The norm for me is to give all of my crust to the BF because he will eat it. So the BF and I actually fight for the crust when we order from here. Lol. ---------- DC and the surrounding states (Maryland and Virginia) have recently had a huge uptick in Detroit style pizza pop ups as well as storefronts. The only reason why I've currently been a return customer at ES-S is because I need to have a variety of ingredients. Not obnoxious amounts but most of the other Detroit style pizza companies only have cheese or pepperoni. Maybe one other ingredient. While I appreciate the simplistic desire to want to focus on those few ingredients, it doesn't work for my palate. In my hometown of Los Angeles we're in the midst of what can only be described as a pan pizza renaissance. Detroit-style pizza in particular is absolutely everywhere, and it's such that I now crave it at least every other week (waistline be damned). Imagine my dilemma, quickly replaced by my pleasant surprise, in seeing not only that Emmy Squared crushes the pan pizza game in DC, but that they've been doing so for years now long before things really took off elsewhere. Star 1: How were the service and atmosphere? Emmy Squared has various locations, and they're all up and running for takeout and delivery in this era of covid. Star. Star 2: How were the portions relative to the cost? While I suppose I'm used to Los Angeles pricing, the value here at Emmy Squared was excellent. For $16.00 I got a Colony, which was the top tier combination of Jalapenos and Pepperonis. This could have, and should have been a meal for two, but I quickly demolished the entire thing with some help from a friend and regretted nothing. Star. Stars 3 and 4: How was the food? This was very good. For those not familiar with Detroit style pizza what you've got is an emphasis on what is essentially a foccacia-like crust with the toppings stacked (often under the cheese) with some marina that tops everything off. It's wonderful conceptually especially to someone like myself who really loves crust, and Emmy Squared had a good iteration of the concept. I have long salivated over the photos of Emmy Squared pizzas in my delivery app. But I was always dissuaded from ordering it because the estimated delivery time to get to my house was always 1 to 1.5 hours or more. But given today's beautiful holiday weather, I decided to make the drive over to the restaurant myself and enjoy a little pizza in some al fresco dining. Well, let me tell you -- this place did not disappoint!!!! This is some darn good pizza!!! Definitely the best I've had in the DMV to date, edging out places like Timber Pizza, RedRocks, Pi, and Matchbox imho! I ordered the Roni Supreme pizza (with the Calabrian chili paste on the side, which turned out to be a good call given that I didn't like them). I also wanted a side salad, but the restaurant doesn't offer that so I basically had to purchase a separate entree salad to eat something green and help myself not feel so guilty about having ice cream (SN: shameless plug for "Everyday Sundae" in Brightwood) and pizza on the same day! That brought my bill to a whopping $32 before tip, which is quite expensive for pizza and a salad on my view. But I have to admit that I enjoyed them both! The Kale Italian Salad is fresh and well-dressed, though I recommend following my example of subbing out the olives for pickled red onions. Yum! The Detroit-style pizza was amazing too! It's comes as a rectangular personal pan pizza -- with six slices on a slightly deep crust. Yum! I was able to enjoy my meal in their outdoor dining area, and for most of the time I was the only person there which was super nice! The area borders the sidewalk though, so it's very busy and noisy with all kinds of people passing by at all times. Great for people-watching. But not great if you want a more calming and quieter experience. One other thing worth mentioning is that parking is an absolute nightmare. I had to circle the block for about 15 minutes before I ever found a space to park. I thought perhaps it had something to do with the fact that it was both a Sunday and the July 4 holiday, but the hostess said that today was pretty tame compared to usual. Speaking of the hostess, she was so nice, personable, and welcoming. Unfortunately I did not catch her name, but I think she deserves a raise! I ended up getting the Colony which is the perfect savory, spicy, and sweet blend with the pepperoni, picked jalapeños, and a touch of honey to balance it all out. Emmy does use very high quality ingredients which makes me feel much better about eating pizza, which is usually a guilt trip on its own. For a quite some time I've drooled while looking at photos of Emmy Squared on Instagram. It wasn't until last May (2019) that I took a self-guided pizza tour in NYC and was finally able to try Emmy Squared. It lived up to the hype but left me sad that a trip to NYC was the only way to enjoy these sauce, scrumptious, square slices. I was very pleased when I learned that Emmy Squared was opening a location in D.C. Shaw is an up and coming area in D.C. with a lively crowd. Parking is a bit of a pain in the neck but the restaurant itself is new, nice, and clean. Honestly my only complaint is that the space is small and you are almost guaranteed to be elbow to elbow with the patrons next to you (unless you get lucky and get a booth). The employees were friendly, fast, and consultative. For food we ordered garlic cheese sticks, The Quinn and the Colony. My second visit I also tried the vodka pizza. The garlic sticks were great, delicious pesto sauce. The Quinn is simple: cheesy and satisfying. The Colony was a heavy hitter, pepperoni, jalapenos, and honey. Great combination. The vodka pizza is good but a little bland compared to the Colony. I think the move is to get a vodka pizza and throw a few toppings on there. Emmy Squared has a great deal / special going on during the Covid-19 Pandemic. It's a Family Meal which includes a side, a few salads, and three pizzas. We were told 7:15/7:20 would probably be fine. We ended up not being seated until 7:45 so had to stand outside for 30 minutes. Once we were seated we put our orders in pretty quickly. The sodas and cocktails came out after about 20 minutes--the beers took a full 45 minutes and multiple asks about where they were to finally come. We asked for water refills which never came for the rest of the meal. The pizza finally came after an hour. We got two vegetarian options and both were very good. Not the best I've ever had but decent. The kids enjoyed the kids menu options. Our server was plenty nice but did nothing to acknowledge that the drinks took so long--she blamed the "new" bar tender multiple times but it didn't make sense that the cocktails came out but the canned beers didn't. We aren't ones to ask for items to be taken off the bill but I would have appreciated her taking them off since we weren't even able to finish the beers before finishing dinner (kids were exhausted from a long day out.)
