Very unique and a refreshing change up from your normal D.C. pizza. Detroit has made its mark on the DC Pizza scene. I ended up getting the Colony which is the perfect savory, spicy, and sweet blend with the pepperoni, picked jalapeños, and a touch of honey to balance it all out. Emmy does use very high quality ingredients which makes me feel much better about eating pizza, which is usually a guilt trip on its own. The ambience in this restaurant is very pleasant and a great place to come for a date. Definitely make sure to make a reservation as it can get quite busy at night. Parking isn't so easy, which is typical for DC so prepare to arrive earlier than your reservation time. read more

For a quite some time I've drooled while looking at photos of Emmy Squared on Instagram. It wasn't until last May (2019) that I took a self-guided pizza tour in NYC and was finally able to try Emmy Squared. It lived up to the hype but left me sad that a trip to NYC was the only way to enjoy these sauce, scrumptious, square slices. I was very pleased when I learned that Emmy Squared was opening a location in D.C. Shaw is an up and coming area in D.C. with a lively crowd. Parking is a bit of a pain in the neck but the restaurant itself is new, nice, and clean. Honestly my only complaint is that the space is small and you are almost guaranteed to be elbow to elbow with the patrons next to you (unless you get lucky and get a booth). The employees were friendly, fast, and consultative. For food we ordered garlic cheese sticks, The Quinn and the Colony. My second visit I also tried the vodka pizza. The garlic sticks were great, delicious pesto sauce. The Quinn is simple: cheesy and satisfying. The Colony was a heavy hitter, pepperoni, jalapenos, and honey. Great combination. The vodka pizza is good but a little bland compared to the Colony. I think the move is to get a vodka pizza and throw a few toppings on there. Emmy Squared has a great deal / special going on during the Covid-19 Pandemic. It's a Family Meal which includes a side, a few salads, and three pizzas. I was in the mood to try something different in the pizza category, so I decided to give Emmy Squared a shot. They have a ton of delicious looking options, but I was went with the Angel Pie, which has ricotta, mushrooms, mozzarella and a truffle cream sauce. Their pizza is Detroit-style, so I was expecting it to be rectangular, thick, crispy and chewy...that's exactly what I received! The outside was nice and crisp, but the center was lighter and fluffy. It also didn't feel too heavy considering it's a thicker slice. The cheese, mushrooms and truffle sauce all complimented very well and had an extremely good flavor. I ordered for delivery. They put some instructions on the box for me detailing how to reheat the pizza in case it gets cold during transport. They also put the truffle sauce on the side, so you could add as much or as little as you wanted. It did take a little longer to arrive, but it was a Friday night, so I'm assuming it was just a bit busy! Overall, I really enjoyed Emmy Squared's pizza. It was a little on the expensive side ($19 for this pie), which is my only knock. I finally tried Emmy Squared with a friend. We got the Cesar salad and split the Big Ang and Roni Supreme. The Roni Supreme was perfect but the Big Ang was just okay. The salad was also really tasty. Our cocktails were more strong than flavorful. The star of the night were the ice cream sundaes. You get to make your own right at your table. The pizzas were perfectly cooked. The available options all sound so good. And, of course, you can build-your-own pizza too. We opted for the deluxe and the Big Ang. Both were solid choices. We are in the midst of a food revolution that does not appear likely to level off anytime soon. Emily and Matt Hyland, co-owners of Emmy Squared, exemplify one of the reasons that this is the case. Great chefs don't need to reinvent the wheel when dreaming up a new restaurant concept. The country (and of course the world) is ripe with beloved local foods that are just sitting there waiting to be nationalized and elevated by the right creative minds. It was only a matter of time before someone brought great Detroit-style pizza to the East Coast. First, a quick primer on Detroit-style pizza. The most common thing people know about it is that it's shaped like a square. Except it isn't - it's almost always a rectangle. But this is Detroit's thing and they want to call it square, so square it is. The dough is Sicilian-style, which is soft, dense, porous, and not particularly chewy. The toppings are sometimes applied in an inverse fashion, with meats and veggies first, covered in cheese, and sauce on top. At Emmy Squared, the sauce does top the pizza but the cheese is applied first. Perhaps the most important element is the pan, which brings life to the thick, buttery, and slightly crispy crust. Some refer to this as deep dish, but it's really much closer to a pan pizza from Domino's or Pizza Hut than it is to a Chicago-style deep dish pie. How my group felt about the pizza is evident from my pictures. Slices were flying off the cooling rack before I could even think about snapping a shot. The toppings were all excellent, but if you are a meat eater definitely get something with pepperoni, my top recommendation being the Roni's Supreme. The Cinderella story of the menu was The Greenstoner, topped with green tomatoes, hatch chile pimento cheese, and bacon. I did not expect this combination to work at all and I was as wrong as Bill Simmons predicting anything. The pizza doesn't even have a sauce and it did not matter a lick. A few other quick things. The cheesy garlic sticks are quite nice, in part because they are covered in a pesto-like sauce. The menu doesn't mention this sauce so just be aware. The desserts are limited but they are very good. The banana pudding is a must and the chocolate mousse was a hit with others at the table. These are quite big though so share them if you can. The restaurant is small so try to grab a reservation. The wait staff was terrific on our visit and I think the coziness of the dining room allows them to be a little more attentive to each group. This is the chain's 7th location all in trendy food cities (Williamsburg, Brooklyn, The Gulch in Nashville, etc.). A 2nd DC location will soon be opening in Navy Yard. The rapid expansion of a place like this makes me worry about their ability to sustain the quality long-term, but thus far the reviews remain stellar across-the-board. read more

It was #NationalPizzaDay and I decided to come here with my babies and one of my good girlfriend's and her daughter to celebrate - So glad we did! Emmy's is THEE BEST! I made reservations, via OpenTable, a few days prior as I would've hated to had arrived and they told me no tables. We had reservations for 3:30pm on a Sunday afternoon and were immediately seated in a huge (and comfy!) booth. Our server was simply amazing! I cannot remember her name, but my daughter kept pointing out that her hair was purple - yes, it was purple and really pretty too! The kids had their coloring sheets while us MOMS chose what to eat. After our server informed us that each pie has 6 squares, we decided to do 4 different pies. I chose the EC Shaw and the Roni Supreme (with the Calabrian chilies on the side, for the kids' sake) while my girlfriend ordered the Classic and the Deluxe. Hunny, these pizzas blew our minds!!!! They were ALL amazing! The pies are all Detroit-style - thick crusts; crispy, crunchy edges (which I LOVEEEEEEE in pizza); soft middle; and overflowing with toppings and cheeses. Want to know my absolute favorite?! THE EC SHAW!!!! The tanginess of the blue cheese (I don't even like blue cheese!) mixed with the sweetness of the EC Shaw sauce was the perfect marriage of flavors! The fried chicken piece on top with more sauce was like the cherry on a sundae. The Classic is just as its name suggests - a Classic - w/ tons of cheese and sauce. The Deluxe was overflowing with onions and green peppers and was spectacular while the Roni Supreme was super cute with its mini pepperoni circles (I typically don't eat pepperoni pizza, but Emmy's is an exception!). My girlfriend and I kept saying how we need to return to Emmy's ASAP without our kids so we could enjoy our pizza's in peace. Even the wallpaper when you enter is so cute. I cannot wait to return. The next day when reheated for lunch, the pizzas were just as great as the day before! If you're in the area, just do your taste buds a favor and stop in! The pizza tasted stale and the cheese was over cooked. It also did not reheat well based on the instructions provided, 3-4 min was barely enough time to get the pizza hot. Wish there was some disclaimer before ordering that would have told me I wasn't getting a fresh and ready pizza. Been here twice now. I love the ambience of this place - super cute and I love the music they play (which is at a reasonable volume that allows for easy conversation). I got the basic pizza when I came the first time and it was great; super saucy. Second time I got the vodka pizza and it was lacking sauce, which was surprising how saucy the basic one was. I think this has to do with the red vs white sauce distinction. If you want it saucy, do red. If not, do a white. Also wanted to note that the cocktails are phenomenal! I got the roland schitt and was blown away (partially due to how strong it was). I would give a higher rating if the service was better. To start I'd say the experience was more like 3.5 stars, but I'm going to err on the positive side. I made a reservation for 7:30 on Saturday night. When we arrived, the hostess greeted us and we were immediately sat. Once sat, it did take a while to be greeted. We sat for like 10minutes with no real acknowledgement. Finally our server sent one of the managers over to get us started since she seemed swamped . I ordered a glass of wine and my boyfriend ordered a beer to start. Once greeted by our server, I was on the fence so I got recommendations and finally settled on the sausage and mushroom pizza, and I added pepperoni. My boyfriend got the burger with cheesesteak fries. The food took a while to come out. She then brings my boyfriends burger out and says my pizza is on the way. My pizza was not on the way. We sat eating his fries and he was almost done with his burger by the time my pizza came out. That is ridiculous. However, the manager brought it over and repeatedly apologized and said next round of drinks were on them. Our server was also really apologetic and appeared really frustrated with how long it was taking to come out. From not being greeted for over 10minutes when first being seated, to our food taking long, and then my food coming out even later you'd think I'd give lower stars. But, the food was really good. Those cheesesteak fries were delicious, the pizza was good, and my boyfriend liked his burger. Also, to make up for our long wait, the manager took ALL our drinks off the bill (we had two rounds) which was really appreciated. I understand every place has a bad night, and I appreciate them acknowledging it and attempting to make it right. From other reviews, it does seem that the service is a hit or miss. If they can get that all figured out, I think they will be solid option. We ordered through DoorDash who has NEVER got one order correct thus far. I am really new to using this platform. I'm really "old school" and would rather pick up the pie and take it home like the good old days but my kids are urging me to get with the times. The pie arrived with pepperoni instead of sausage like I originally ordered. Initially, I was disappointed but the clear reheating instructions attached to the box eased my frustration. After taking the first bite, I ended up reluctantly, sharing my pie with my entire family. Emmy Squared reminded me of my all time favorite Italian spot back home. The reason I'm giving Emmy Squared a 4 Star review is because the pie wasn't correct, as cheesy as we expected and smaller than expected. Not really conducive for a family of four (two of which are teenagers). Otherwise, Emmy Squared is pie to be reckoned with. I vote yes.....but my family is still undecided. Time will tell. The food is excellent! Two friends and I shared the Big Al with sausage and kicky Calabrian chiles (each pizza is cut into six squares), the single order of bacon filled Zia fries (very generous portion), and the kale Italian salad. Every single thing was well seasoned, super fresh, quality ingredients, and delicious. The pizza crust is appropriately Detroit style buttery and crunchy, though I would've liked even a bit more crunch. Each slice is carefully graced with a piece of burrata, sausage bits, chiles, and a leaf of perfectly placed basil. We were all comfortably full with some leftovers after. The interior is beautiful and elegant and the outside patio isn't huge but it was easy to get a walk in table on a Tuesday night. Patio seating also makes for great dog watching in the neighborhood. The mosquitos were out in force but staff had bug spray to lend at the host stand. Will start by saying the food was good but everything else was bad. Came to the restaurant at 6:15pm and ended up having to eat our pizza at home at 9:15pm. We came for my wife's birthday dinner because she's from Michigan and wanted some comfort food with Detroit style pizza. They took our order and we got our appetizers an hour later and our pizza 2 hours later. We have a toddler and the delay took us well past her bedtime so we ended up taking the food to go. Came in at 9:33pm yesterday even though the hours are til 10pm according to the sign out from (but I knew this yelp page said 11pm, which I was going off of before arriving). The two hostesses out front said last call is 9:45pm for ordering at the kitchen and they suggested we're better off getting it to go. Oh really? My favorite pizza place IS this place -- with usually above average service and staff, but to give us a passive "buzz off/I wanna go home, so don't eat here" type of welcome sucks. Especially when you're out of date listing here showed 11pm, which would have been plenty of time to dine in. Suggestion 1: Offer to seat us anyway and politely ask us to order ASAP to ensure we get it within the time limit. We were only a party of 3 and usually order one pizza to share--nothing that would keep anyone there past 10 for too long. I'm hesitant to even return tbh. I had a plan to bring a larger group within a few weeks who are visiting from out of state, but maybe we're better finding a more welcoming space that is happy to take our business. Had a great experience at Emmy Squared with my girlfriends! We went here for the first time today wildly hungover and the General Manager was so sweet and welcoming. The drinks were delicious and the pizza was so fresh. The GM gave us some great recommendations :) we ended up getting the big ang, hot chicken, and bad paulie. Loved the pickles on the hot chicken pie. Great atmosphere, service, and food. This place got rid of my hangover. 10/10 would go again! read more

I wanted to love this place but they wouldn't let me! Server asked me twice about my wine order, visibly having me point at the menu. The drinks came after my food. (20 minutes) She delivered the wrong pizza to my table extremely early, it was someone else's, but then only told us after that it was wrong since we had already dug in (It had hot honey on it instead of plain pepperoni). Imagine if I had been allergic! We watched our drinks sit at the bar in a practically empty restaurant for 10 minutes. The bartender had to remind her. First visit went well. To start, they take reservations for all tables. I think this is a mistake because people cancel, and having some walk-in allows a stream of people. Secondly, they have a lot of reservations available for 2 person tables, but not for four. Boss, couldn't you just put two two-person tables together? Back to the experience. Waitstaff was very pleasant. We knew what we wanted to order before walking in. The Big Ang was terrific and exactly what I wanted. Couldn't have been more impressed. I could describe it, but the menu does just fine. The Tina, however was come down. White pizzas need to make up for the lack of sauce, and this didn't.. quite dry. I wouldn't recommend it at all. The banana pudding was good, although I wouldn't order it again. The glass jar makes it hard to get a little of everything with each bite, and there could have been a tad more banana. To be honest, Emmy Squared left something to be desired for me. For starters, though lively, something about the atmosphere maybe even the architecture of the space makes it impossible to hear your dining partners or your server. It feels like you're practically shouting or you just give up entirely. As for the food, the menu is incredibly enticing. Upon first glance, everything sounds delicious. I ordered the Angel Pie and had leftovers perfect for dinner the next evening. The crust is phenomenal. I will give it that. On caramelization, Detroit has New York and Chicago (and dare I say) even Italy, beat. That said, the pizza was almost lukewarm and the spices left something to be desired. When I looked back over the menu, I realized that every pie had some element of something I wanted, but none were just quite right. I would have loved a build-your-own option. I am hoping that since this is a new location, they are just working out the kinks for now. I would definitely return at a later time and maybe try some of their sandwiches. The fancy, coil filament lights must blind diners to the fact that they are eating a $21 dollar breadstick nicknamed a pizza. The shimmering silver wallpaper must distract them from noticing the excessive amounts of salt added to compensate for lack of actual ingredients. The attractive waitresses' fluttering eyelashes must take away all concerns about the dirty restrooms and wilting salad leaves.
