***Pre-COVID-19*** I received cataract surgery at the beginning of December of 2019. Compared to other ophthalmology clinics, I chose Emory Eye Center over others due to several reasons. They... - focus on research rather than profit, which mean they generally carry the latest technology - better scores for patient happiness since EEC hypothetically would value people over profits - offer top tier graduate and professional programs (like their medical programs) My entire experience, from pre-ops to my actual eye surgery to my post-op appointment, was for the most part seamless thanks to Dr. Praneetha Thulasi. I asked her so many questions, and she never once answered without ever rolling her eyes or exemplifying any impatience. She explained as much as she could in layman's terms to me, too. She also executed my surgery flawlessly. Before, "white clouds" in my eye would obstruct my few making it even difficult for me to read. I had trouble driving at night. I couldn't enjoy life at times, honestly. But after my surgery, life never looked so clear. Thank you so much, Dr. Thulasi. I appreciate your masterfulness implanting that multifocal lens into my right eye. My only feedback? The clinic that performed my operation could have done a better job communicating my appointment time... I received three calls from three different people, and a few opportunities to improve reside there. The pharmacy that also provided the pre and post-op drops gave me the wrong prescription (but that's on them, really). Aside from these minor things, though, I LOVED the sweet nurses who took care of me. (I found out I can't stand watching a needle being inserted into my hand.) I had an appointment this morning. I took off of work to make this appointment. When I went to the desk to check in the person told me my appointment was canceled. They don't know who canceled the appointment but it was canceled without my knowledge. This trip cost me a day's pay, gas and a parking fee, all of which Emory will never give back. This is the second screw up. Two years ago, when I was at a family dinner, they kept texting me instructions of what to do after having eye surgery. WHAT??? Clearly wrong person. I guess they're getting me mixed up with someone else. I don't believe I'm going to give them a chance to get me mixed up with someone else. It's time for me to move on and find another doctor and office. read more

Even a one star review is optimistic. My husband waited four hours to be seen yesterday. His appointment was at 1:30 and he wasn't seen until 5:30. No doctor is going to perform any kind of comprehensive exam on someone at 5:30 on a Friday afternoon. The doctor was in and out very quickly and did little more than say come back in 6 months. We won't be back. There are plenty of doctors with better run practices that treat glaucoma. read more

Midtown Center - Was a patient there. Had surgery there. Months later had a severe eye infection. Called for appointment, but of course it was a month later. Asked to go in that day and was put on hold for eternity. Drove there and asked to see the doctor. The 3 women there were black and were extremely rude and unprofessional. They had me sit and wait for hours while a black guy came in without appointment and the women immediately helped him. After waiting all that time, one of the women came out and said that I would not be seen that day. I heard the other two women laughing from behind the desk. Never go there, especially if you are not black!!! By the way, went to another office that saw me immediately and said I had two ulcers on my cornea and had I waited I would have gone blind. read more

Go somewhere else. The first problem is that it takes 4 to 8 weeks to get an appointment. Second; they overbook so badly that you'll sit for almost an hour before seeing the doctor. I had double cataract surgery for monovision; left for distance and right for reading by Dr. E Grauber. The successful distance surgery restored my normal 20/16 vision. The reading, however, is in focus at 7 inches from my face and becomes blurry at 12 inches. Monovision worked for years with my contacts but Emory's Dr. Grauber gave me an interocular lense TOO STRONG and I can't read my cars instrument panels without leaning in to the steering wheel. I get headaches trying to watch TV when there is text on the screen. I started wearing scotch tape to keep my reading eye shut to prevent those headaches. At evaluation she says the available lenses are either too close or too far. I found out that was a cover-up for her error when I got a second opinion. It's April and getting a second opinion with Emory's Dr. Kim isn't possible until mid August. When it finally happens he says that fixing their mistake will cost me $4,500 to put in the correct lense or $2,500 for Lasik. My other choices are contacts or glasses. As a retired business Sr VP with over 5000 employees I've had over 40 years of operational experience. This is my 3rd trip to the eye clinic here. Every time is has been the same thing. Excessive wait times. And by excessive I mean hours, not minutes. This is a business that should be shut down! It offers no value to its customers due to front office mismanagement. This could be easily corrected but apparently there is no one in charge that gives a crap about customer experience. Pull the plug on this business dog!! read more

October 9th 2024 Allen D Beck Emory Eye Center Dear Sir: Today My wife (Nancy A Spell) had an 8:20AM post-op appointment with Dr. Kim. We checked in about 8:10AM. We sat in the waiting room for 1hr and 45min and after question what the long wait, the response was: they had overlooked her. After calling us back they put us into another waiting room in the back. We waited another 1hr and 30 min and questioned why again and was told there were two ahead of us. We were finally able to leave 11:40am. ALL THIS WAITING FOR A 5MIN POST-OP!!!!!!! Oh wait, she was not the only one, there was another patient they called and then a while later they called again, then a while later called again. Then the lady at the desk called his cell phone, and guess what, he answered the FIRST TIME THEY CALLED HIM, AND THEY HAD PUT HIM IN THE BACK WAITING ROOM AND FORGOT ABOUT HIM!!!! You have a very unprofessional and incompetent office staff!!! This is very abusive and stressful to patients. Really bad. I like using Emory for many needs and the Clifton Rd eye center location is very convenient, however the 1365 eye doctor location is ridiculously bad. I went to the first floor, bc the website said 1st floor and learned after I waited a really long time that I needed to be on the 3rd floor. I had to reschedule. Why should it be such a mystery? DR. PETRA JO'S STAFF THREATENED TO CALL SECURITY WHEN I WAS THREE MINUTES LATE FOR APPOINTMENT. A few months ago I was three minutes late to an appointment with Dr Petra Jo because the suburban facility's parking lot was completely full and I had to wait for someone to leave to open up a parking space. Despite my communicating this upon arrival, which was still 27 minutes before the actual exam/procedure, I was told by the receptionist, a large overweight woman, in a very impatient tone that I'd missed the appointment and would have to reschedule. I politely offered to wait to see if I could be slipped in between other appointments and sat down in the empty waiting room. After around 20 minutes, still in an empty waiting room, and after the receptionist apparently called back and spoke with this so called Dr Petra Jo I was informed by the receptionist that I still couldn't be seen. I politely asked if I could speak to the doctor or perhaps come back a little later since I'd driven an hour to get there. I was told that if I didn't leave immediately security would be called. I was stunned at her attitude and immediately left without any further conversation. Obviously this treatment was insulting and wholly unnecessary. Of course I never returned and scheduled with a different doctor who without a doubt was more customer oriented. I would highly recommend not relying on Dr. Petra Jo for anything given their horrible and arrogant attitude towards patients. I wouldn't trust the lady with a plastic knife at a picnic much less with my eye sight. Conversely Dr. Hendrick and Dr. Grabaurt at the Emory Campus Emory Eye Center are some of the best doctors I've met. They're extremely positive and courteous and their results are nothing short of miraculous. Thanks for saving my eyesight! I have been going to this clinic for years now and never been overly satisfied with my care but left today feeling astonished with the care I received. I spent over 5 hours waiting to see the doctor. When I expressed how concerned I was, she did not apologize for my wait. Instead, she told me to find a different doctor if I didn't have the time to give her because she accepts all patients and all her patients will be seen. She then proceeded to prescribe care without taking the first look at my eyes. If there was another option within a days drive of me, I would be going. what is wrong with the medical field that they feel it's acceptable to treat people this way? read more

Great doctors & medical assistants. Both were kind, competent and professional. Really, really terrible office staff. Rude & dismissive. Excessive wait times. Sometimes literally hours. The sense of being "herded" is prevalent here. The worst may be that the check out line is combined with the check in line. So you're finished with your exam or uncomfortable treatment and you must line up with folks just arriving for their appointments. The line is often literally out the door and into the hallway. One would think that would be a clue that the system is not working properly. read more

I honestly don't know where to start. The entire process with this place has been nothing short of a disaster. My eye appointment was a month ago. The signage for even finding the clinic is atrocious, and the front desk person I asked for directions indicated she didn't know where it was...it was LITERALLY THE OFFICE BELOW HER DESK. That was just the start of this fiasco, as I went in and was seen promptly by one of the techs to have my initial exam. This part was actually great, and the young lady who helped me was excellent. HOWEVER, once that was over, I was brought back into the waiting room to wait for the doctor to see me. It was nearly TWO HOURS later that I was finally seen, with no explanation, apology, or other from the front desk staff. Others in the waiting room were getting angry as well, and no one had the courtesy to say "the doctor is running behind." Finally, I get to see the doctor, who gives a half-hearted apology because she "had to take care of an elderly patient who was late." I finished the eye exam and left, because by this point, it was 5:00 and my appointment was at 1:00. I came back to choose my glasses the following Monday, and sat waiting to be seen while others walked in and were greeted while I sat waiting. There is literally NO SYSTEM for the eyewear shop. It's just a "fend for yourself" situation, and when I finally was "seen," the woman who I was "greeted" by asked someone else to take care of me, because she was gonna take a break. It was so unprofessional, and I wanted to leave right then, but, you know, I like being able to see. I pick out my frames, unhelped by the person who finally did greet me...I turned around as I was looking, and he took another patient who walked in...moving my backpack from the seat and allowing her to sit down and helped her while I was picking out my frames. I do not know how anyone in this area is employed at Emory. It's astounding. Once I was finally able to see him again, and brought him my frames, he gave me an astronomical price, having added several things that I never asked for, taking my total from $150 to over $450. I asked to see the paperwork and he rolled his eyes and showed me that he had ordered the "top of the line" stuff for every piece of the glasses, when I had specifically told him I didn't want all the bells and whistles. I was told it would take 2 weeks. Here we are a month later, and I have called three times, asking about my glasses. The first time, the woman was rude (I think it was the same one who left me for lunch) and said "SIR! We will call you when they are ready!" The second time, three weeks after my initial appointment, the gentleman told me "oh, you ordered rare frames...so it's taking longer." I called today, four weeks out from my order, and the man told me he had seen my name and he knew they were there, but he had to look. He called me back 30 minutes later and said that the frames I wanted were backordered, so they had to ship the ones from the shop to the lab. I don't want the frames that 200 random people have tried on their heads! I want NEW ONES! Do you just tell someone who orders a couch, "Oh, we just gave you the one from the showroom floor because we couldn't find any new ones." DONE DONE DONE with this place. read more

After 9 visits to this place in 2 years for my wife and I, I would not recommend it to anyone. Sad really as Emory has long been known for excellent healthcare and they seem to have really improved their customer experience in the last 10 years or so...but not this place, it really is a terrible experience to go here. I have never gotten through the attitude filled, unfriendly administrative staff in under an hour past my appointment time. The waiting room is always filled with people all sharing the same wtf? expression as they look at their watches trying to absorb the fact that they have wasted so much of their day here. I love the constant question from the staff "What insurance are you using?" (reply anything) "We only take xxxxx insurance". Then why the hell do you ask me this every time? Once, if, you ever get through the front desk, you are put in to another room for at least 30 minutes until someone comes in and dilates your eyes and taps some keys on a computer. Then you are taken to another waiting room for at least 30-45 minutes before they put you in yet another room where you can see a doctor after about another half hour. The doctor spends 5 minutes with you, writes a prescription and then they take you out to another line to check out which is always 5-10 people deep. BEWARE! the "optical center" attached to the waiting room. It is a contractor shop and they will absolutely pilfer you for run-of-the-mill glasses and frames at 2-3 times the cost and wait time. Briefly, after my first visit and $750 later for 2 plastic frames and bifocals I had to come back in a couple months because the glasses were so bad. The doctor said "wow these prescriptions are way off"...did I get them redone at no cost? lol..no. Then I took my existing frames that I purchased there and 2 frames from home and asked to have them filled with the new prescriptions. Long story short, the "about $200 each, and 1 week wait time" turned in to 3 months wait time and $400 each. Yes, they charged my $1250 for four pairs of glasses with me supplying the frames!!. P.S. the prescription still isn't right and I have to take them back again to be fixed...but it won't be at this place. The entire experience was very similar to trying to buy a mattress or a used car at one of those flim-flam places. I STRONGLY suggest that you do not use Emory Eye center for anything. (I didn't even get in to my wife's several return visits after they mangled her eyes in cataract surgery). bottom line.///this place has some real problems. don't go there. read more

This is an update to my poor review earlier. Dr. Graubart did an exceptional job of removing my cataracts and correcting my vision. The staff was very friendly and supportive. However, the institution has a serious issue with efficiency and communication. They could truly benefit from consultation for process improvement. The frustration and anger I experienced, and saw displayed by many other patients in the waiting room, could be minimized by modifying the process of patient check-in. They are in serious need of bilingual check-in representatives. I watched a latino woman cry because she could not communicate with the representative. read more

Beware and avoid this clinic at all costs. They are both sloppy and have absolutely no respect for you or your time. My father waited for 4 hours for a 10 minutes laser procedure today, and this is not the first time... during this time they attempted to treat the eye they previously treated. At my last appointment, I also waited for 2 hours and then had to return because my prescription was so off that I literally could not see... and then had to wait yet another hour and 1/2 to be seen. Are you someone who enjoys waiting over 70 minutes past appointment time after arriving 15 minutes early for a mid morning appointment? Do you enjoy an over crowded wait room? Do you want the customer service people to have a touch of attitude when they check you in? Are you looking to wait in line for 15 minutes to check out at the end of the appointment? The techs and doctors are great. They work in a constrained system and it really impacts patient satisfaction. Arrived 20 minutes early for an appointment that they called and told us was scheduled but upon arriving they could not find the appointment and they are running 1.5 hour behind... I was told.. will be called next... 9 other people were called before we had just had enough and we left What just blows my mind is they open at 8AM and they tell people that have 9AM appointments they are running 1.5 hours behind??? how the fcuk do you get that far behind when you just opened the door????? Why make appointments at all???? just tell people to come in the night before, pitch a tent, and if they are one of the lucky ones to get in the door first they get to see the doctor that day read more

Nationally recognized for having great eye specialists! All that counts for nothing if they don't have any patience or empathy. I get the idea they just want to herd the patients through like cattle so they can bill them as fast and as much as they can. I had a difficult time trying to get comfortable with my contacts. They really weren't trying to help. Even heard the doctor complaining how long I took to get my contacts in. Ended up never going back after awhile. $2000 dollars down the drain. Probably mission accomplished for them. Now going to a local eye doctor who is very patient and shows concern for my condition. Dr. Andrew Hendrick is a handsy, incompetent creep. There is no reason an ophthalmologist needs to put his hand on your knee or rub your arms. Besides his shocking bedside manner, Dr. Hendrick is either thick in the head or a fraudster, because he ordered tests that were expensive and unnecessary, given the nature of my vision loss, and then was condescending and dismissive when I asked about it (again, either to cover for his stupidity, or to bully me into accepting the inflated bills). Dr. Ghazala O'Keefe was less of a lawsuit in the waiting, but seemed more interested in my ethnicity than my progressive vision loss. Neither were able to diagnose my problem. Both agreed that the next step should be neuro-ophthalmology. Both seemed terrified to refer me, as if the doctor in that department held sway and would retaliate. Throughout this ordeal, the office staff often didn't know how to schedule the tests that were ordered, resulting in redundancies and long waits. The final shock came when the doctors told me to go to the ER for an MRI, because, apparently, the vaunted Emory Eye Center doesn't have access to an imaging facility. I chose Emory on the basis of their reputation and was thoroughly disappointed. It was with great difficulty that I arranged for transportation to and from my appointments only to be treated quite poorly. Once I resolved not to go back, I turned to a doctor in the suburbs who referred me to an imaging center a few minutes from my home. I was able to get an MRI the next day with no wait time. I heard that my new doctor had worked at Emory in the past and was so appalled by their over-charging and lack of professionalism that he left. Whether true or not, that fit with my experience. I may not get my vision back, but I now have an explanation for it and take medications to prevent it getting worse. It's terribly frustrating to think that, if I had gotten competent care sooner, I might not have lost as much of my vision as I did. read more

The office staff and Dr's do not care about their patients time. They are consistently running 2+ hours behind on appointments on a daily basis. If you ask when you're going to be seen, they get upset and defensive even when you are trying to be nice as the patient. One nurse advised me this is a daily occurrence in their office and is normal for them. read more

Emory Eye Center, where we more than make up for our gross incompetence and lack of professionalism with an extra dose of surly nasty treatment of our patients. This used to be one of the premier eye centers but oh have the mighty fallen. This is the most poorly managed medical practice I have ever had the misfortune of having to deal with. I am not sure how they could salvage this place without terminating the entire incompetent management staff and starting over. It is really sad to see such an institution degenerate to such a level. Got stuck with a $500 bill from this idiotic practice because of their horrendous, thievery billing practices. Apparently a regular refraction exam with Dr. Xiaoqin Lu will cost you this much. I've had numerous (21) years of eye exams, always with board certified medical doctors who were extremely distinguished (old) and well-known in the research and medical community and the most I've ever been charged was $200. Avoid this practice at all cost. Their billing department refuses to re-file. Taking this with my insurance company. read more

I found out I said routine eye exam when I scheduled it instead of contact fitting. Really? Since when is that option not part of a routine eye exam? Also, parking was a pain. read more

Very sad. I am an Emory employee and I was completely embarrassed by the incompetence of the staff here. Waited an hour to be called in the room, then all the nurse could do was complain about how she did nothing for 3 hours then all the patients showed up at once. I showed up on time for my appointment but I guess that didn't matter. Never in my 15 year nursing career have I treated a patient this way. I've been a patient here for almost six years. My physician is excellent and that is what matters most to me. I have never had a long wait nor a problem with desk people. We are not in a private hospital, so things are not fancy. And, frankly, for me, that's a plus! Emory care, in my opinion, is among the best. read more

I went to the Emory Eye Center in building B at the Emory Clinic off Clifton road by the hospital. Dr. Mary Carlton in suite 1100 on the 1st floor is amazing!she squeezed me in on a Wednesday because my eye was bright red. When it still bothered me on Friday afternoon, I spoke to her nurse and they said come back in. I did not have to wait. The main number is 404.778.2020 (get it like 20/20 vision?). I highly recommend her! I have also seen Dr. Townsend, but I prefer Dr. Carlton. read more

This place is a nightmare. There is always a line literally out the door to check in and out. You wait an hour in the front waiting room, another half hour in the exam room, then they dilate you and put you in another waiting room for another hour. Then you wait to have scans done and then you wait for the results. Then it's another half an hour to check out. I've been there four times and each time was 4-5 hours total waiting, for about 10 minutes with a doctor. Making an appointment is even worse. The doctor will say you need to come back in a month, but there are no openings for six months. So they say they will call you with a time they can work you in. You will go blind before anyone ever calls with that appointment (for me, 11 days and still counting). Honestly, all of the Emory Clinics are poorly run and have long wait times, but this one is by far the worst. read more

Very poor quality customer service with very offensively rude attitudes. They are transparently slow. They are lazy and talk at you with an entitled attitude. They do not take ownership of their errors with billing. Overall the check in and waiting room staff are a poor representation of the eye center. People are waiting and frustrated because of the first impression they receive while checking in and waiting to be seen or checked out. I was intentionally billed when I was told I would not be. I was billed because they did not follow up on receipt of documents that were forwarded to them in May of 2022 from the Department of Veterans Affairs. My visit was made by the VA and my scheduled appointment was June 29 2022. I have PTSD, Depression and Anxiety and this was one of the worst experiences dealing with a medical facility that treats patients. It takes a great deal of patience to deal with arrogant attitudes that just past the time of day entertaining themselves observing people become frustrated while trying to check in and wait to be seen by a doctor. I was referred by the VA for cateracts and cornea transplant. The doctor was kind and very thorough but the lobby for check in is horrible. read more

I have managed ophthalmic and other health care businesses for over a decade and can not recommend this facility. Dr. Kenneth Rosenglen examined my eyes in December 2017. At the end of the exam, he said that my current prescription was too strong. In hindsight, I should have asked for a re-exam at that moment. In March 2018, I returned with some existing frames for the new RX. I noticed immediately when I picked them up that the distance portion was a little blurry. However as I had been on the computer all day with an older pair of frames, I knew to first give it some time. The blurred vision from the new RX continued for another two weeks so I returned the pair on April 6th. The person from the Optical Shop was professional and courteous. Britton checked the RX and said the RX was correct so I would need to schedule a recheck. I let him know that I was unhappy about this. He said that he understood and asked me request the first available optometrist when I called for the appointment. I called that afternoon and spoke with a customer service rep who said that they would try to get me scheduled as soon as possible and that someone would give me a call back. An hour later, I received a call back from a customer service rep named Jackie to schedule an appointment. I said that I would like the first available optometrist for the recheck. She said, "That is not how it usually works. Dr. Roseglen originally examined you so he will need to reexamine you and he is currently out of town." I asked to speak with a manager. She said that someone would have to call me back. After I got off the phone, I called back and am now trying to speak with a manager...never again!! read more

In the middle of a deadly pandemic it is important to avoid time in close proximity indoors with other people. I had to wait for 90 minutes this morning for about 8 minutes with the doctor. Why is that necessary?? A visit to our family Opthalmologist because of a black dot at the 8 O'clock position in my vision. He (in Stockbridge) said everything was fine. Something , i felt, was still not right. Called Emory Eye Center. "Come in immediately", they said. Once in their office they took me right back. In surgery within 30 minutes for a detached Retina at the two O'clock position. Out of surgery within an hour. All is well, one year later. Sure, you may have to wait a while under normal circumstances, but I don't mind when I know I'm getting the BEST. Dr. Hubbard is absolutely the best, having been the Dr. who found my detached Retina. I'm a fan of Emory Eye Center since 2005, my first Cataract surgery. Love'em !! read more

I wish that I could recommend this place for eye refraction and eye glasses as I'd like to support it, but I just can't. Reasons are: 1) Your appointment could be months after you make it 2) The ladies who answer the phone are terribly rude (they are Emory protected employees and can not be sacked for poor performance) 3) Take a good look at the waiting room picture above - you will be there a lot 4) The eyeglasses I got were the worst fit optically that I've had in years - and the ophthalmologist would not accept my word that could not see well with them 5) The eyeglasses I got were the worst fit physically that I've had in years - and the technician would not accept my word that they were too tight behind my ears 6) The eyeglasses I got were double the price of my previous pair - $750 It is my expectation that the medical staff spend the majority of their time providing service for people with eye disease and put routine eye exams low on their priority list (I would want them to prioritize me if I had a disease rather than a routine visit too). I also think that the only way that they could come up with the prices they do is to 'up-code' so they charge your insurance way more than is necessary, and that they do this to subsidize their medical service - but that is a only a theory. I went to see them yesterday I was billed wrong coding as a specialist visit versus an eye exam visit a $15 difference and am still waiting on a doctors note to be correctly written. Horrible bed side manner everyone is a sheep in the herd with a number attached to the ear. I called immediately as they opened and was told I'd have my note by 4:30 pm and waited until 5:15pm and still nothing sent. Dr. Patel rushed my visit by repeatedly emphasizing it was almost time for her to go home and she screwed up my doctors note otherwise I wouldn't have had to call the next day asking for a replacement it would have been nice to had even been able to read the note prior to leaving but my eyes were still dilated. read more

Havent Been There For Years. Had A Retina Come Loose In My Right Eye. Have Had 4 Operations On It. Doctors Were Good. Right Now Have Oil Bubble In Right Eye To Hold Retina In Place.
