I went to DHEC to purchase my first pair of progressive glasses. The staff that helped were wonderful and helped me to pick out frames. However, the 7 day return policy is not flexible enough. When it comes to progressives, you need a few days to adjust to them. If there's a problem, one needs time to return to the store, find out that the prescription might be wrong, reschedule another ophthalmologist appt, and then return again with a new prescription. For people who work, it is not possible to miss so much work--or get another doctor's appointment so quickly--and return to fix the glasses. I spent a few hundred dollars for unwearable glasses because I work full-time and could not get back into the store with a new prescription within 7 days. I had to wait another year before I could address this due to insurance coverage. I recommend DHEC for standard glasses and the outstanding staff, but if you need progressives that might need some adjustments over time, you might want to consider a place with a more lenient policy. read more

I hadn't been to the eye doctor in a few years and thought it would be a good idea to get everything checked out. My regular health insurance allows me one visit per year with an optometrist or ophthalmologist and I found Druid Hills Eye Care through the provider site. When I saw so many good Yelp reviews I thought it was a great sign. I called the office to make the appointment and didn't have any trouble scheduling for that week. Upon arrival I waited in the lobby about 30 minutes to be called (which also included filling out the new patient forms). I did a couple of tests in the exam room and waited again for a brief amount of time for the doctor to come in. I saw Dr. Ortiz. She was courteous and thorough. I appreciated that she did not try to push glasses on me since my prescription was so light. I was given the option to have my pupils dilated which takes about 15 minutes for the drops to start working, just something to be aware of in terms of how long the appointment takes. I was done with everything at about 5 pm, my appointment was at 3:45. Four stars for the wait time, but otherwise it was a good experience. read more

I know you're looking for glasses or an optometrist or contacts, but just bear with me for a little analogy, hmm? I've been watching lots of Top Chef lately, and just saw the restaurant episode where the team has to create an entire place from scratch. Well, just like on the show, for service oriented things, the front of the house matters just as much as the food coming out of the kitchen; i.e., it still sucks if the people at the post office are unfriendly, even if your package is delivered on time. Same tis true for things like, oh, say, optometrists. I must say, Druid Hills Eye Care has the front of the house and actual goods in the kitchen both cookin'. After a mediocre experience with somewhere I previously was going to for all things pupil, I was ready for a change and made the trip up N. Druid Hills. Front of the house: First of all, the staff was uber helpful when I first called in - friendly, knowledgeable, and easily booked an appointment for me. And they literally went the extra mile and found me in the insurance system . . . whereas many times, I've experienced it's like pulling teeth to get any kind of answer when it comes to stuff like that. And overall, they were just authentically helpful, cool and efficient. High fives all around. Stuff cookin' in the back: After being really overall excited about this place, I had a moment of nervousness that the actual doctor was going to be uncool. Thank goodness Dr. Solomon wasn't. Really professional but also friendly - which is what I'm all about. He explains everything, actually answers questions you may have and totally goes over the huge photo of your eyeball with you, too. I will let you in on that he is a fast talker, though (like, speed-wise fast, not as in 'talk you into a pyramid scheme' fast talker) so pay attention! I'm really picky with my eyes and I don't think anyone has ever touched my eye, well this one visit I was having problems taking out my contact Dr. Solomon was right there popping it out, and to my surprise I didn't scream, cry or swat at his hands (trust factor). It's that time of year when insurance allows you to get new glasses! I picked Druid Hills Eye Care because it was in network with my insurance and they were the closest with the highest ratings and reviews. This place is pretty awesome! They have their own private lot and located right off of Clairmont near work. Dr. Solomon took his time and tweaked my vision so that it is pretty much crystal clear. He did such an amazing job! With my astigmatism it's really hard to get clear vision with contacts, so I've been living with blurry vision when I look at things with contrast. When I left this establishment, I can read my green flower kitchen clock clear! He's such a great and friendly guy. The receptionist, the eye glass specialist, and vision tech were all thorough and friendly! I've never had an experience like this. The vision tech reminded me to ask certain questions and made sure I felt comfortable. The receptionist was cheerful and called me by my name, so I didn't feel like just another customer. I've always had a hard time finding glasses that work with my face (read chubby round cheeks) and the eye glass specialist walked me around the store and helped me pick out some new glasses that compliment my shape. I've been here a few times over the past few years and had a great experience each time. Dr. Solomon is extremely talented at zeroing in on the best eye prescriptions. I have the clearest vision with his help. Further, I much appreciated that he helped me discover an issue I had going on with my eyelids that contributed to my dry eyes. No one had ever noticed before and with the treatment he recommended, my eyes are feeling much better now. And in your case, thats his profession, thats at least he can do for you and I am glad he treated you , otherwise, he does not deserve to practice his prefession, hope you are with me on that. I was on the hunt for a new eye doc when I came across Druid Hills Eye Care on Yelp. Unbeknownst to me, having gas permeable lenses is a big deal these days - everyone wears soft lenses. Gas perms have worked fine for me the past 40 years but I guess I am considered a bit of a dinosaur. I first saw Dr. Ortiz who had Dr. Solomon come in to fit me. I was grousing that my arms are no longer long enough for me to read close up as well as being extremely nearsighted. Dr. Solomon suggested I may be a good fit for bifocal gas permeable lenses. WHAT? I had never heard of this before. Dr. Solomon fit me for the lenses. I came back in a week to pick up. He tweaked the one lens by .5 and is going to give me a new lens next week. I left EXTREMELY happy with my new eyes. I am now telling all of my friends to go to Druid Hills Eye Care. Very, very pleased with my new practice. read more

Due to cataract surgery which didn't turn out so well and resulted in a detached retina, I was no longer able to wear monovision contact lenses which I had worn for years. I was miserable whipping glasses on/off every time I needed to read something. I had tried a bi-focal contact lens years ago and it was terrible. But I was desperate to have the ability to see at a distance and up close, so I decided to have Dr. Solomon fit me. Within minutes, he located the correct lens for my eye and I can now see far and close up with no problem. I cannot tell you what a relief this is. I've been going to him for years, and he's always done 100% by me and my vision. read more

Terrible experience. Dr. Solomon rushed through everything and seems agitated throughout the eye exam. I don't believe he even gave me the correct eye prescriptions since my previous prescription is slightly higher than what he suggested. He is what you call an aggressive salesman and pushes you to buy whatever he suggests that's best fit for you. We are in a pandemic and people are going through financial struggles and he expects you to pay hundreds of dollars for products you can purchase online from reliable eyewear providers that are 50% less than what he pushes for. I was surprised to see that some of the experiences in other Yelp reviews matched my own, but I guess I shouldn't be. Dr. Solomon was the FIRST eye doctor I've ever had to actually care about my somewhat bizarre vision problems, and certainly the first to give me real help. I have a very bad wandering eye, and I've had double vision my entire life. One of my earliest memories is of an eye doctor. It's always been difficult for me to focus - I have to move my head around to keeps things in line - but it had gotten worse as of late, and my friend recommended Dr. Solomon. I've seen many eye doctors in my time, but none have put in the time (Dr. Solomon worked with me for well over a solid hour) to try and actually come up with something that might help. The particular combination of prisms I have in my new glasses enable me to actually see straight with virtually no effort. And Dr. Solomon was ready to not only recommend, but discuss my issue with a surgeon if it didn't help. Past doctors either ignored my focusing issue, instead just dealing with my "regular" bad vision, or basically told me there was nothing that could be done. Druid Hills Eyecare is not the cheap option, but if you have vision like mine, the cheap option sucks. His staff is super helpful, and his office is well stocked with cool, fancy, and expensive frames (I'm rockin' Guccis now, with Prada reading glasses). I'm not much on writing reviews at all, typically only when exceptional, and on the rare occasion when something's bad and you know it wasn't just bad luck/day/timing. This is one is obviously one of the good ones. I've been going to Druid Hills Eye Care and trusting my eyes to Dr Solomon and his team/family for well over ten years. I've always been treated exceptionally well and have never felt rushed by Dr Solomon or anyone else there. Even today, with my first time trying contacts and having trouble with all phases of them, Dr S and crew were patient and encouraging - I felt bad for Shawn who had to literally put in and take out his contacts a dozen times showing me different techniques until I could do it. This was after Shawn helped me with frames, asking about my work, tasks/roles, office, style, etc and suggested quite a few frames, helping me step yet again a little out of my comfort zone. Very professional, personable and great service. And last but certainly not least...Juliana! She's been here for I can't remember how long, and has given me the final seal approval on at least my last three pair of glasses. And no, she isn't just saying yes. She gives honest feedback (she vetoed one pair last time, thankfully) and is just one of those joyful souls with sparkly eyes and a smile that not even her mask could hide. And can't forget the other young lady next to Juliana that joined in the frame vote, and the others that helped check me in, and the young man with the initial "triage" of tests and such. Excellent eye doctor. Dr. Solomon is on point and professional. His office runs very efficiently. I tried on 4 different contact lenses total in an office and f/u visit. He showed me an educational video about astigmatism, drew diagrams, and provided great care. He wanted me to try toric lenses for my astigmatism, but they didn't work out for me. I prefer night and day contacts. I do recommend paying the extra $25 to take a picture of the retinas for a better exam. Depending on the type of contacts, they will either ship to your residence or you pick it up at the store. I have been going here for several years, and I am satisfied. read more

I always find it a good idea to read the few bad reviews for a business. The good reviews just might have been solicited by the business owner. With that being said, I'm a fan of this place. I just ran out of contact lenses, and I searched Yelp for an eye doctor in my area, and this place came up. I read the mostly good and few bad reviews on this place, and I decided to give it a shot. I was extremely lucky as they accommodated me with an appointment time within the next hour. Despite what the FEW disgruntled customers say about this business, Dr. Solomon gave me a thorough eye examination and treated me fairly. He was very professional and did not try to upsell me on any items, and if he did, it's ok for a business owner to make recommendations that will put money in their pocket. Businesses have to make money, and if people don't buy from businesses, then businesses can't pay their employees. If you're an employee, you do want to get paid, don't you? Sure I could get cheaper service from a Lenscrafters or Wal-Mart, but you're just another number to them. They've already got billions of dollars in the bank, and they pay their employees minimum wage. You won't get the great service from a Lenscrafters or Wal-Mart that you will get from small businesses like Druid Hills Eyecare. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND DR. I realize in my previous review I may have taken out my fear of slowly losing my eyesight on the nice folks at Druid Hills Eyecare. It's not their fault I can't see. In fact, they did everything they could to make me feel comfortable and taken care of. Even before my appointment, they called my crappy vision insurance company to try and figure out a way to get my appointment paid for. Throughout the visit, Dr. Solomon and his staff were exceptionally helpful and took the time to explain everything I had questions about. Dr. S was able to fit my crazy football shaped eyes with some crystal clear contacts and sent me home with a sample of special solution to battle their protein proliferation. Also, despite absolutely no help from my "vision insurance", the visit, including CL fitting, was only $150! My contacts are outrageously expensive, but thats my problem not theirs. I still hate the location, but I will keep coming back because they do such a good job. read more

Not being someone who needs their glasses on a regular basis, I would normally go to a chain store for something like this. But, in an effort to support local businesses, I thought I would try Druid Hills Eyecare. It was quite a change from my experience in other places! The receptionist helped me pick out frames while I was waiting, and made sure to let me know the options available to me on my health care plan. Dr. Solomon was nice and very patient with me. I have a light prescription, so sometimes it's hard for me to tell which view is better. -1 or 2, 1, 2, Me: Hmm, I can't tell, Hmm I don't know He was very curious when I told him I found out about the business through Yelp. He even wrote it down. He's probably Yelping now. I guess it's because of the personal care, but I walked out with a really expensive pair of cheap glasses, so that's why I knocked it down to 4 stars. Both my husband and I needed to get our yearly exams and needed to find a place that would take both our insurances, and I'm glad I followed up this recommendation from a friend. The staff were super efficient and helpful (even helping me wrangle our 10 month old while I was taking some tests and my husband was in with the doctor). Dr. Solomon was friendly and very thorough - he wasn't rushed and took time to answer all my questions. He actually helped me get a toric lens for one eye, which apparently none of my previous doctors ever bothered with. Now I can see MUCH better.
