I have had prescription lenses for a very long time but Dr.Barnes and his staff are the best. My prescription has changed over the last few decades. Every time the new prescription and new lenses have improved my vision. I would be remiss if I didn't sing the praises of Kay, Christina, Howard and BJ (?) They are true professionals. Let them help choose your new frames. They know their stuff. I tend to prefer the newer styles in frames--i wear them all day and consider them accessories and conversation starters. The latest frames are to be found here as well as traditional styles. Service is on point. All in all, a great place to go for your eye care. read more

So I was hesitant to come here based on the amount of negative reviews, but I also noticed they were mostly dated a few years back so I decided to give it a chance, and I'm so glad I did. I walked in without an appointment inquiring to see how the staff would handle things. They officially got information about my insurance card and said they could actually see me now if I was available, which I was. I got my contacts and eyeglasses test and prescription all handled in less than an hour with no issues. The staff at the phone was super friendly and helpful, the doctor was efficient and informative and the process couldn't have been any smoother. They let me know the contacts I like they don't have in-house but they can order them and there was even a rebate so I ended up doing that. Anyway moral of the story is not every experience will be the same but is reviews are mostly over a year old go check something out for yourself because there's a good chance that staff has turned over and or learn how to do things better. read more

While staying in Atlanta during a road trip, I fell asleep with my contacts in and woke up with irritation, redness, and pain. Many of the Urgent Care centers in Atlanta do not take insurance and of the centers that did, my insurance was not accepted. Unfortunately, my insurance did not cover services at Midtown Eyecare, but the out-of-pocket costs were more affordable that quotes I received from any of the nearby Urgent Care centers. Dr. Barnes provided a judgement-free consultation the next day along with providing an almost instantaneous solution for the pain and treatment to reduce irritation/redness and prevent infection. If I lived in this city, I would be back for future vision and eye care. read more

It's a cool place altogether, staff is alright, kind of on their own time though. Only problem is the cost. They will overcharge you for frames when you can buy the frames probably for 5x cheaper online or at another store. Also you guys need to check authenticity of frames. Dr Barnes is ok I guess, but the staff is not. They're really rude and made me feel super uncomfortable being in there like I'm somehow intruding and it's a huge problem for me to try on glasses. When I was trying to buy a pair they wanted $400, I went online and got the same EXACT pair of Ray Bans with my exact prescription for $100. They couldn't find contacts that actually worked either and I was paying out of pocket until my new health insurance kicked in so I decided to just come back and get a new eye exam but they scheduled me in a day they're NOT EVEN OPEN. Buyer beware! Understand that after 2 years, your lens protective coatings could fail( material defect) and Midtown Eye Care will not stand behind the failure. Do you expect your glasses lenses to last more than 2 years?.....,I do.....and had no idea extra protection would backfire. I paid $800+ for new lenses(only) 3 years ago, with every option available and when this year they became clouded and "unseeable"(not scratched up, just blurry), Midtown Eye Care would only offer to replace them for $700+ Quoting "Industry standard" warranty of 2 years. Not right to sell products and offer extra protection for more money that expires in a couple years, making your whole investment unknowingly void. Where's the integrity? Not only were there unmasked customers, but the vast majority of employees (4 out of 6) were unmasked despite the current indoor mask mandate in Atlanta. Not one member of the staff was wearing a mask. I had a good experience but was confounded by the non-mask wearing staff and Dr. The Dr. was nice and helpful. But....I was wondering if the Dr that saw me washed his hands between patients? I didn't see any evidence of hand washing or using a hand sanitizer before I was examined. This place is trash. They screwed up my glasses and when they didn't sit evenly on my face the assistant said "next time you should try to draw your other eye brow lower". Excuse me?! They also tried to fix my glasses with pliers instead of warming up the plastic and molding them appropriately. Long wait times, etc. don't waste your time here. This is my regular eyecare provider in Atlanta. They have a nice selection of regular and fashion glasses. I even got a nice pair of perscription sunglasses there (007 style, baby!). They provide an okay eye exam, but go to a more specialized eye doctor for low vision or other more detailed testing. read more

They are soooo friendly and helpful! I bought sunglasses here two years ago and recently am animal chewed up the nose pads on them ‍ I came to the store and didn't realize I was there after they closed, but they actually stayed open to look at my glasses and order the correct replacement pads. When I went back, they were just as friendly and helpful as the first time and gave me the serial number and spec details of the glasses just in case something happens in the future and I'm not able to go to the shop. My husband and I had prescriptions filled for regular glasses and sunglasses four days ago. All of them came in with the exception of my sunglasses. I called today and was told the gentleman that was fitting the lenses into my frames was busy but would soon be getting them done. That did not happen. No communication whatsoever. I wish I could do a separate review for Dr. Barnes, because he is wonderful. The current office staff, however, are pretty terrible. I've been going to Midtown Eye Care since 2005 or 2006, so I've witnessed the staff turnover over the years. I don't know if they hire people fresh out of the nursing/medical program or what, but they always seem like they have no idea what's going on. A couple years ago, one of the people in the retail portion of the office brought her dog to work all the time. I'm not a dog hater, but something about the idea of a pet running around in an office where I'm having a medical(ish) exam really put me off. Luckily, that only went on for a year or two. I haven't seen the dog since. On the plus side, they have a large variety of stylish frames at all price points to choose from. They also have a pretty quick turn-around for frames and contact lens orders. And, as I mentioned before, Dr. Barnes is excellent. The office is located in the same plaza as a Whole Foods & Home Depot, directly across the street from Ponce City Market, so the parking lot is almost always packed. There are dedicated parking spots for Midtown Eye Care directly in front of the office. However, it's a nightmare reversing out of those spots when you're ready to leave (thanks to the steady stream of cars entering and exiting the plaza). After my recent visit in early February 2017, I've finally decided to move on to a different eye doctor. I would recommend Dr. Barnes, but would not recommend Midtown Eye Care. read more

Reluctantly, I came here last year because my previous optometrist no longer accepted my company's new insurance. Midtown Eye Care accepted my insurance and was close to my work so I decided to give it a shot. At that time, I was neither impressed with the optometrist staff nor the staff in the eye glasses store however Dr. Barnes was good. So this year, when my contact lens prescription had expired, I decided to run in for a quick prescription renewal - big mistake! As previous reviewers stated, Dr. Barnes is fine yet the staff are unprofessional, almost rude, and, certainly, less than helpful. The staff all seem to not only be fresh out of school but also have never worked in customer service before. As stated above, I came in specifically for an updated contact lens prescription. Also, as shared, I came here almost a year prior AND received a reminder email stating that I was due for another appointment. ALSO, I completed a detailed online form to make an appointment, received a reminder phone call, text, AND email. Therefore, I know I am in their system. However, I still had to fill out the same detailed questionnaire during my appointment as though I was a new patient...not so bad but frustrating. Additionally, when making an appointment online, their online reservation system SPECIFICALLY asks why I was making the appointment. And I SPECIFICALLY indicated I wanted an updated contact lens prescription. Thinking all was confirmed as it is their own online reservation system, I thought all was well. However after finishing my exam and trying to order contacts online, I was immediately contacted by Midtown Eye Care with them stating they ONLY completed the exam for prescription for eye glasses?!?!? And, if I wanted a contact lens prescription, I needed come back for another exam and pay an additional $70+ dollars! To add to my experience, the people at the optometrist front desk are less than helpful, especially the one with tattoos displayed all over her arms. This place is convenient but I will certainly find another optometrist with a more professional and helpful staff As this last visit was a waste of time, money, and my patience. read more

Pros: You can schedule an appointment for the next day. Cons: (1) Strangely incompetent front desk: they kept repeating that I do not have an insurance while having my insurance card. It was not resolved until I put an insurance representative on the speaker phone. The whole experience made me feel very uncomfortable and they did not even apologized for their incompetence. Dr. Barnes is fine, but his staff disgusted me. I got a contacts fitting and left with no contacts. When the suggested lenses didn't work for me, I should have been given an alternative. The assistant that helps with the fitting showed zero empathy when the contacts did not work well for my eyes. When she saw that they were stuck she had a blank expression on her face the whole time. She asked if she could help take them out, but never asked me if I was ok. This is shocking because I indicated, on paper and verbally, that I have a bad reaction to silicon hydrogel lenses. I should have been listened to instead of directed to trying more lenses composed of this type of material. Unable to get alternative lenses (because another trial pair was not offered), I attempted to purchase glasses. The man that "helped" me select glasses was socially awkward and tentative. After I sat down, he decided to entertain a solicitor instead of assist me with frame selection. I shouldn't have had to ask which frames were covered by my insurance. It was evident that I wasn't being assisted because another employee jumped in to help. She was the friendliest employee I encountered during the visit, and I appreciated that she gave me feedback on how the frames looked and responded quickly by providing me with frames that seemed to fit "my style." Unfortunately, I overheard her discussing how certain colored frames look 'good' on dark-skinned people. Although I recognize that she was not saying this maliciously (the tone was complimentary), this kind of comment was inappropriate and unnecessary. In this racially charged historical moment, during a business transaction, staff needs to ensure that everyone spending money in the establishment is treated equally. I highly doubt a white customer would be told to try on certain frames that accentuate their 'pale skin.' My skin color is not fashion. Some Yelpers may find this response overly sensitive, but it negatively affected my experience. I expect optometrist visits to be one of the few medical establishments that I can avoid being differentiated by my race. Overall, Dr. Barnes' office needs a more attentive, friendly, and culturally sensitive, staff. read more

Dr. Barnes read my review on Yelp and called me to discuss. He was very cordial and wanted me to be aware that they did perform the glaucoma test. About a week later he called to tell me three boxes of my contacts were in and the fourth was on back order. I said no prob - that I would wait until the fourth came in and pick up all at once. Two weeks go by and I haven't heard anything so I call and am told it is still on backorder. I suggest the staff person call the vendor and ask when they plan to ship - I mean this is borderline ridiculous. The staff person calls me back to state there was never a backorder, the vendor's order showed three boxes. My point of saying all that is, if I hadn't suggested they call and find out wtf is up, I may still be waiting for a box of contacts that would never show up. I sent an email to Dr. Barnes letting him know of my latest experience with his practice. When the fourth box arrived (2 days later), he called to tell me and stated he was going to comp me all four boxes. He said he was sorry for my experience and that he respected my choice to go to whatever eye doctor I chose, but that it is easier to retain customers than to find new ones. When I went to pick up my contacts, I noticed there was a note with them. The staff person took the note off and handed me the four boxes and said "you're all set". I told her about the credit, at which time she decided to read the note and then she asked for my credit card in order to credit my account. There again, if I didn't bring this to her attention, no credit would have been given. Net, my experience with the staff gives this business a two star rating. read more

Super friendly staff, lost my last pair of contacts while on vacation here, they gave me enough for the trip and didn't even charge me!

Even though I've been a patient here for two years, when I recently changed insurance I was informed, only 1 day before my appointment, that they don't accept it, even though I'd called with the new information several days previously. My dilemma, which I explained, is that I'm almost out of contacts. The only option I was given was to pay an outrageously high fee (nearly $200) out of pocket in order for the exam, and then I'd get some contact samples to help me through. And that's not including my contacts themselves, but just the promise of some samples. Totally not a professional or helpful way to treat someone who's been coming here for two years. The doctor himself is fine, but the staff here is not exactly friendly and left me in a stressful place of choosing between frantically trying to find a new optometrist or paying lots of money. Not cool. I ended up making a last minute appointment with another optometrist. I am not upset per se about them not accepting my insurance, it happens. I am upset that 1) I was told last minute and 2) when I was speaking to one clerk on the phone (who was actually nice) I could hear another woman talking loudly, and rudely, saying things that were not helpful or kind. I called back to cancel my appointment and was told "fine" and hung up on. I just expected a business to care more about losing a customer than it seems this place did. I originally went to Midtown Eye Care back in December. I didn't get my prescription filled until March. However, it was the incorrect prescription. I waited three months but there's no way my eyes changed that much, I almost felt high with my new prescription. Fast forward a week or so after I get my new glasses, I call Midtown and state that I was there back in December and am just getting my prescription filled but need to come in for a recheck. I called them on a Tuesday to confirm that I would be coming in Saturday and to ask what were the associated costs with the visit. The employee stated that there would be no charge. When I get there Saturday (the weekend doctor was funny and great!) and it's time to check out they give me a bill of $35. I then relay what I was informed on Tuesday. They say "No, no, it's been so long since your original visit that there will be a fee." Which I have absolutely no issue with. My issue is that when someone calls you before a visit to inquire about the associated costs that the staff be knowledgeable of what the price will be. Seems as if this staff needs a tune up on pricing and procedures. What makes it worse is that Dr. Barnes called me and agreed to a refund but he still tried to make logical sense of why they were right and the time gap between visits when in all actuality that wasn't even the issue. It was the misinformation that I was given by the seemingly incompetent staff. When I went in for my refund this Saturday I had to explain over and over as to why I should be getting refund which was embarrassing with about 4 or 5 staff hovering the desk. There should have been a note under my name in the computer system. Finally, after about 5-10 min someone came from the back and was like "oh yeah, it's her, there's a note" to that effect. Once again, bouncing back on the incompetency and unorganization. You don't call a customer to apologize but try and explain why you're right when you 100% aren't. Customer calls for a price for a visit and explains their situation (date of original visit, issue)-- give them correct pricing. How hard is this? I will never recommend coming here and shun everyone who even thinks about the idea. read more

As a new patient, the online appointment-setting calendar was very convenient. It allowed me to get an appointment within a couple weeks. Furthermore, they were able to get their new patient paperwork to one double-sided page, and it only took me 5 minutes to fill out. The staff were courteous, thoughtful, and willing to answer all my questions. Dr. Barnes was great. My family and I have been going to Midtown Eye Care for several years and I recently returned for my annual eye exam and to choose glasses. I feel bad for the reviewers who have had bad experiences but I have never had a bad experience in the entire time we've been coming here. While I understand the desk staff can come off as rude, they are actually just slammed and probably have a more 'get to the point' attitude so they can move on to the next thing they have going. I had my exam and Dr. Barnes is always fantastic and helpful. He told me about some new contacts that had recently come out that I may be interested in since I have a severe astigmatism, especially in my left eye. So he gave me the deets on the new lenses but I opted for glasses at this point. I was trying to choose some frames and a gentleman came around the corner to make sure I was finding what I was looking for and a few minutes later a woman came around and asked the same thing, so I felt like they were paying attention to their customer's needs. The only negative thing I found on this particular visit was the fact that two of the folks behind the front desk were talking about a fellow co-worker and some guy she is dating (it sounded like he may work there, too, but I'm not sure). They were talking about how they're a hot couple to a customer and then the guy beind the counter piped up and said, "it's a bit tumulchuous but they make it work" or something to that affect. I couldn't believe they were talking about a co-worker like that to a customer. The woman helping me couldn't believe it either, and looked at them with shock. I wonder what they said about myself and my husband after we left. read more

Great optometrist that really explains what the purpose of tests are and what the results really mean. I've been going to optometrists since I was 7 years old, I'm so near sighted that I'm almost legally blind it seems. My appointments have been with Dr. Hsu at this office, and she talked to me more about my eyes and what she was doing more than any optometrist I've been to in over 20 years. The down side to this office is that depending on the time of day you have an appointment, parking can be a real mess. This is the same complex on Ponce that has Whole Foods, Borders, and Hoe Depot to name a few. Lunch time and right after work are usually the worst times to try and go. read more
