Empire Cafe has been around a long time. I lived in Houston 20 years and went there regularly. The coffee is always excellent, the food is also good although I only had a few handful of things because mostly I go there for dessert. The cakes are all always amazing. On Mondays, you can get half priced cake! The place is always full. The servers are always excellent and kind. It's nice to sit outside when the weather permits. I always recommend this place because it is awesome. read more

Lovely spot to enjoy brunch and do some work-- need to try pastas (they smelled incredible at the neighboring table) The huevos rancheros were also very good Chicken and waffles are good, but the filet is a bit thin. Great little breakfast spot in Montrose and for coffee and cake also. I also like that they have a parking lot in the back and plenty of seats outside on the patio with covering. You take the menu and you order first then you find your table and take your number with you and they will bring the food to you. read more

Empire Cafe has always been on my "to-visit" brunch spot list. The place was beautifully decorated with plants and sunlit decor; staff was friendly; and food was pretty good. I ordered the chicken & waffles, which came as a generous serving. However, both the chicken and waffles were on the dry side, which was a bit disappointing. The egg, though, was nice and runny -- a perfect complement on top of the chicken. The fruit was also nice and sweet. The overall ambience was calm and spacious. Many people were also seated outside, which is perfect during the spring or fall weather in Houston. I'd definitely come back, especially for a next study spot. Perhaps will try something new since my dish wasn't out of this world. read more

Tried and true, great neighborhood spot! We take the dogs to Empire Cafe at least a few times a month to dine on the patio. The restaurant is casual but efficient and we always get prompt & courteous service. Our go-to breakfast/brunch item is their omelette with your choice of up to 4 fillings, which comes with fruits and oven potatoes. We love coming here. The food, service, and atmosphere are amazing. However, this evening there were two boys approximately 10 -12 years old running through the indoor and outdoor seating areas screaming and chasing a dog. This went on for close to half an hour. The staff never said anything to them. I approached the table where 4 older adults were seated and evidently very inebriated. I asked the boys to stop. They cussed me out. The adults asked them to apologize. The boys called me a slur and laughed at the adults they were with. From what I could determine this was a family group from the neighborhood that are regulars. Their conduct was disgraceful and extremely disrespectful. The security guard knew them. And seemed to be aware of the issue but unable to do anything about it. Are they such "good" customers that you are willing to lose others by allowing this behavior? There was 7 of us. We probably spent close to $150 tonight. Others left because of the behavior. I'm so disappointed that such a great spot can be tarnished by entitled individuals and their actions. We will think long and hard before coming back. With a slow economy and so many eateries going out of business unfortunately the Empire may be next. read more

It's been weeks since I tried Empire Cafe for the first time and I cannottt stop thinking about going back! Had their acai bowl and cappuccino then shared a serving of chicken and waffles (sadly forgot to take pics) with my mom. The acai bowl was super fresh and had the right amount of toppings imo! Cappuccino was delish, and we loved the chicken and waffles so much that we probably ended up talking about it the whole time lol. There's something different about the waffles that I can't put into words but I would definitely recommend it even as someone who's not a chicken and waffles kind of person. The place was really cute and I'd recommend eating outside if the weather allows it! Service is good though it can be pretty slow when they're busy (understandably so). read more

Great fast casual cafe where you order at the counter and food is promptly brought to your table! Lots of great seating options inside and out. They have a water station with lemon for self serve hydration. Lots of options on the menu, you can't go wrong based on all the food I saw other people order. My sister and I both went with omelets with tomatoes, bell peppers, pepper jack cheese and our proteins of choice were chorizo and Italian sausage. The amount of add ins within the omelets were plentiful. The breakfast potatoes were nicely seasoned. My sister ordered hashbrowns with hers and she said they were good and cooked well. We also had chai lattes to drink. Everything was super delicious and we both cleared our plates. If I'm in the area again, I would definitely come here for brunch! read more

This place was in my work neighborhood. First visit was a seated meal. It was pretty full and lovely. I was impressed with the Eggplant Parmesan with vegetables. The portions are plentiful. The veggies seemed under seasoned but I still enjoyed them. I'd place my orders online for pickup and it was always test by the time I arrived. It became my good to for my lunch. These are very large slices of cake and I've heard the breakfast is this part, although I didn't get a chance to partake. read more

Finally got to try this place and I am not disappointed. It was a really cute place. The one critique that I have is how crowded it was in the line to order. The restaurant itself is actually quite big. I give big props to the patio being dog friendly as we are trying to socialize a new puppy. The patio could have used another fan or two, but I digress. The highlight of the experience was the food. Everyone pretty much demolished what they got. I was super impressed with how well the Verde was seasoned with great garlic flavor and rock salt to elevate the flavors. The eggs over easy were cooked perfectly. The breakfast potatoes were also just right--freshly fried and salted. The fresh fruit was a nice departure from the rest of the dish. The others in the party got a croissant sandwich, the Roma, and the Huevos Rancheros. There was not a complaint uttered. Suffice to say, I definitely will return when I get the chance. read more

The shrimp chipotle cream pasta was very good. Creamy, not spicy, sauced well, crispy broccoli, nice sized shrimp. Huevos rancheros - Good flavor, hot, not much substance, maybe 8 chips, a couple of spoons of beans, more salsa than anything, if your hungry opt for something else. Chocolate chip cookie - Terrible, not sweet, weird tasting flower, just no flavor. Didn't even eat it. Nice patio, neighborhood scene, staff was friendly. Coffee station is self serve, kinda watered down coffee, not my fave, no flavored creamers either. Overall the place is okay but the portions are very small for pasta and other dishes. Nice trying it out but pass on the next one. They have a beautiful cake selection and I was going to get a piece of cake but after tasting the chocolate chip cookie decided to pass on the cake. Came for student session w coffee and wasn't disappointed! Tons of seating including for larger groups. Noise level was fine and lots of options for pastries, food, and drinks. I got the cold brew which was delicious along w a Nutella chocolate cake that was super moist and fluffy. Will definitely be back! This place has an entire parking lot and it's great. The coffee I got was good as well. There is plenty of seating and the interior can be for a study sesh or even a date. My friend and I wanted a casual brunch spot and decided to head to Empire Cafe. We had an overall pleasant experience. We got the Italian toast ("French Toast" made with rustic italian bread topped with mixed berries) and the Not Fried Chicken and Waffles (choice of waffle, regular, multigrain or gingerbread; served with not fried breaded chicken, an over easy egg, berries and a side of syrup). The Italian toast was nice and spongy and came with a generous amount of fruit; it would have been nice if it came with eggs or a protein on the side. They were out of the gingerbread waffle, and the waffle I did get was standard but a little dry. The egg and chicken were cooked nicely, but the chicken was a very thin cutlet. The dishes were fine, but I'd probably try different things if I do end up coming here again. They did have large cakes on display that looked tasty. The atmosphere is very casual; you order at the counter and then they bring the food to your table. The service was fine (just taking your order at the counter). The food came out within a reasonable time. Drinks are self-serve. There's indoor and outdoor seating. Parking can be a bit difficult. read more

Friendly service, great atmosphere. I visited on a Friday morning and it wasn't to busy. Plenty of seating inside and out and everyone looked to be enjoying their meal. Wifi was a bit iffy but overall not to bad. Great place to grab a bite and work with minimal distraction. Chicken & Waffle looked interesting and tasted different that anything I've tried before. Man, this place has really gone downhill. It used to be a great place but now just an overpriced less than average stop. The kitchen does not read orders or just chooses to ignore them. Superior food, lightning speed service and intimate atmosphere. I had never tried this place before but it was recommended by a friend while I was visiting the area. Family of four with drinks and five meals and tip was $90. What we received was amazing and off the charts for quality and taste. It was beyond delicious and we were check on regularly throughout our stay. I cannot recommend this any higher but if I could I would. This is a hidden gem and you must try this place. read more

Initially came in after seeing how packed Agora was. Was really impressed by this spot. Lots of space to study and they have a really good kitchen! Got their chicken sandwich with sweet potatoes fries. It was really good! Their Wi-Fi is a little slow (but it was good for whatever I needed)! Pro tip: everyone seemed to be getting their pizza! This is a cute local cafe. It gave me coffee and pastry vibes but they had a very nice menu with a little of everything. A close friend of mine recommended this place. I wanted to go some where, sit, meditate in my own thoughts, while having food. Well this place delivered that vibe for me. It was so cute and has indoor outdoor seating. No worries, they have several heat lamps if you don't like being cold. I ordered the spinach dip and the Bravo Salmon. The Bravo salmon definitely was the star and tasted amazing. It was cooked to perfection and I left the plate empty. The spinach dip was...blah...but edible. It lacked flavor, it almost gave me store bought with cheese just added on top, but this won't stop me from giving them a 5 star. The atmosphere, service and my main dish made me extremely happy. My hubs and I were browsing for a casual lunch spot this Saturday and came across this gem. I love the vibe, it's an outdoor and indoor sitting and with today's incredible weather so we took advantage and enjoyed our bite outdoors. They have shaded and unshaded seating. It's the type of spot where you get in line and order and they bring the meal out to you in MINUTES. No joke, it was super fast service and such great service. We got the not fried chicken and portobello sandwich and both were delicious. We also ordered the infamous italia French toast to share and it was just as good as the ratings. I seriously debated giving this favorite spot 5 stars. Parking is easy. There's generally plenty of tables so you're not waiting too long for a seat. The staff are all friendly. Restrooms are clean. Baked goods are delicious and taste homemade. I gotta be honest and say that the entrees are meh. That's the only reason I'm knocking one star off. It's not pretentious and the people watching is 8/10. But the drinks? The drinks are out of this world. Generous pours, tasty concoctions, fair prices. One of my fav brunch spots in Houston! The workers are always super friendly and they have lots of seating, both indoors and outdoors! The matcha had to have some sugar and honey added because it was unsweetened, but it was good afterwards! I liked the latte a lot and the presentation was really nice. Overall, I'd rate the drinks a 4/5. The spinach and artichoke dip.... NEXT LEVEL. I crave this all the time. I'm not sure what makes it so good but it is!!! On a Friday afternoon, I stopped by Empire Cafe for a coffee with a business contact. Located in Montrose, Empire Cafe has a lot and I found a spot right outside of the restaurant. While they have a spacious, nice patio, it's been 100+ for the past month so I went inside. You order at the counter and they call your name when it's ready. I wasn't too hungry so I passed on the sandwiches, salads, and the heavier options on the menu and opted for a slice of Nutella cake. It's tough to say no to Nutella! Rather than a coffee, I went with a virgin mint mojito which was refreshing. The slice of cake was a big slice and I chowed that down. It didn't blow my socks off but it did the job. They have free WiFi so it's a nice place to study or get some work done. I'll have to try their savory options next time I stop by! read more

My new fav brunch spot! The breakfast food we ordered is pretty simple but it was good! We got the Belgian waffle & a custom omelette. The fresh fruit with the waffle was refreshing & sweet. I also love how there are plenty of seating outside. I highly recommend sitting outside when the weather is nice. You can also bring your pet (but outside seating only)! This is really a great brunch spot. Bonus points to any restaurant that serves shakshuka - such a great dish I wish more American restaurants served. I felt like they did everything right here. The place looks great inside and outside. The staff is kind and playful. The portions were great and the look of the food is beautiful too. And the food of course was delicious too. History

Contrary to popular belief, the Empire Café was not, at any time, a gas station. In the early 1930s Joseph Hollyfield opened his family business, Hollyfield Laundry & Cleaners. The store front occupied what is now the Empire Café and the processing center was across the street. Hollyfield laundry remained in operation until the mid 70s when Joseph died and the business was shut down. The processing center was turned into an antique mall and the storefront was rented to a handful of different businesses over the years to follow. It wasn't until a Hollywood film producer came to town for a project and found there wasn't anywhere to get a decent cup of coffee. So he and a partner opened the Empire Café. Recently that producer passed the torch to its current, Texan owner who continues to ensure an excellent cup of coffee is right around the corner.

I might have just found one of my new favorite restaurants in Houston. What a great experience!…read more Recently, a good friend dined here and immediately called me to tell me how great it was. She then text our friends group and said we all had to come together and we did just that. She made reservations in advance as this place is popular thanks to recent Michelin Bib Gourmand awards as well as many other accolades. Walk ins are welcome as well. Our reservation was later in the evening so after a night of bar hopping, we ride shared in which I think is one of the best options as parking is limited here or you have to find street parking in the neighborhood. This place is literally a house turned into a restaurant. Inside is just multiple rooms with a couple of tables. It makes for a unique, intimate dining experience, perfect for a date night. In our case, we were a group of nine so we got patio seating. The patio is spacious and well kept, and if the weather cooperates, a great place to hang. One thing that really stood out to me is the amazing ambience of this place. I was told that the bartenders pick the music for the night from the owners extensive vinyl collection. Once the album is in, they play it in it's entirety. The sound system was systeming and on top of the great company and food, we were totally vibing with the music. Customer service was amazing. Every staff member we came across was so friendly, especially our server. The menu here changes. There are some mainstays, but they like to change things up. Their website shows current menus daily. We then moved on to Fingerlingin Good which was a crispy potato dish with chili crisp and mascarpone. It was potatoes elevated to the highest level and so so good. Next up was Beer Battered Sweet Tots. I didn't think sweet potatoes could be that good. Our first entree was a vegan dish called the Carroty Kid. I could seriously become a vegan if all dishes tasted like this. It was curried. A bowl of jasmine rice would've made it a complete meal. Next we tried another famous Nobie's dish called Nonno's Pasta. Handmade, perfectly cooked tagliatelle with a delicious bolognese. I wouldn't share this next time. Ok, I will, but it was that good. On to the heavier dishes. First up was the Jamon With Your Bad Self. This came highly recommended and it did not disappoint. It was favorite heavy entree. It was high quality, iberico pork steak with shaved brussels and all kinds of other tasty ingredients that when combined made such a tasty bite. We then went to the sea with the Drops of Grouperter. It was good, but not something I would order again. It was a little too smoky for my liking. Our biggest dish that came market priced was the Kick His Ass Seabass. This was a whole fish that was presented beautifully on a platter with all the accouterments to make your own elevated fish tacos. We left no morsel of fish behind. It was absolutely delicious. One of the things this place is really known for is their pies. This was the part I was most excited about. Just like their menu, their pies change up. We got all their offerings that night which they presented on one big platter of goodness. Their main stay and I believe always on the menu is the famous Olive Oil Cake. It's not a pie, but I can see why this is such a popular dessert. I can't even describe it, you just have to try it to understand. I finished the sandwich at the restaurant because I knew it just wouldn't hit the same as leftovers. The chicken was THICC. And why is it that a good heirloom tomato can absolutely make a sandwich? Because this one did. Add in the spicy mayo, melted cheese, and super thick yet airy focaccia, and it was a solid 10/10. Now for the pizza- it was fantastic at the restaurant and somehow just as good the next day. The mortadella is a nice, mellow complement to the obvious star of the show (in my opinion): the pistachio cream. Also 10/10.

The restaurant itself is beautiful, and the entire experience felt top-notch from start to finish. What truly made the night exceptional was the service from our waiter, James. He was incredibly attentive, gave excellent recommendations, and genuinely wanted to make sure we had the best experience possible. He was always available whenever we needed something, yet we never once felt rushed. Highly recommend Toca Madera, and if you get the chance, ask for James!

I'll just start off with a quick recommendation from the first visit (because didn't do review that time): the Snapper - immediately yes, if you are not opposed to bony fish and working for your meal in that way lol. Now for this visit I was tempted to get the snapper again but was feeling simple & easy dining, something that didn't require me to use my hands lol. I went with the Peruvian Chicken and it did the job! Great portion, great price, great flavor. Comes with a verde sauce that I was a bit hesitant about, if I'm being honest, but it was so perfect with the chicken and the potatoes. I give it an overall 8.5/10 and it probably would've more if I would've gotten a little more potatoes with my meal. The lobster Mac was okay. The lobster was well cooked but the mac was a standard mac and cheese. Not pictured but I tried from my neighbors and liked: the seafood dip and the wagyu meatball pasta - would likely be my next Bungalow order. They also do a personal s'mores plate for birthday celebrants which I thought was really cute and unique. I must say though, parking cannnn be a hassle. But apart from that, would highly recommend!

Food waited in the private event room for 20 minutes without being served to guests, multiple drinks/glasses broke, and there was visibly no accountability for the several food issues associated with our large party. Gabrielle's attitude towards asking for corrections for your meal was substandard for what you should've received at such as "nice" establishment. The event room was unusually warm. As busy as it appears with the ratings online- I would definitely say it's inflated due to the chef (taste of food) and NOT the service. To have spent $400 for my meal with my spouse- we received a $50 meal with $0 service. Chic-Fil-A has better customer service. GM Kevin, should review the footage of the private party event that happened yesterday for the table of 17 & definitely reprimand, retrain, and reconsider some of this staff. Once he left, the night appeared to go downhill.
