I was looking for restaurants in the area that I hadn't tried yet and came across George's. I'd never even heard of it, but the menu looked good and the reviews were solid, so I figured it was worth a shot. It's located in Rice Village, and there was plenty of parking. The restaurant itself is cozy, and the entire staff seemed like one big family, which gave it a really welcoming feel. I went with my family, and we started with the calamari and tuna tartare. For my entrée, I ordered the pesto bucatini. If I'm being honest, the food just didn't do it for me. The calamari was simply fried with no noticeable seasoning or standout dipping sauce. The pesto bucatini was pretty underwhelming too. It was very heavy on the mint with just a hint of pistachio crumbs, and the pesto flavor I was hoping for never really came through. Pesto pasta is usually one of my favorite dishes, but this one honestly felt like a waste of carbs. The positives were definitely the service and the atmosphere. Chose the salmon club instead of the M-F $35 Lunch special. The sandwich came with truffle fries. The sandwich has a good presentation and taste. Plenty to eat for lunch. Oh my. This is really a 5 star review. However, it took over an hour for my entree to come out. I visited this gem during Houston Restaurant week. 3 courses for 39$, you can't beat that. Oh my so I started with this hummus trio, then lasagna bolognese, followed by lemon meringue. They also give this complimentary bread (made from scratch) with a red pepper butter - your toes will curl. The hummus trio was sensational it comes with the fresh scratch bread as well. There was a red pepper hummus, regular hummus and a green one (I can't remember the flavor but it was GOODT). The lasagna made with all beef -was the thrill. George put his soul in this lasagna. The noodles were freshly made. The layers were balanced. I waa literally obsessed and in love with every bite. For desert, i had lemon merigue. My cousin and I came here for HRW and ordered from both the brunch and lunch menu. They gave us the brunch menu even though we came at noon so we requested the lunch one. There was a hair on my napkin but I just brushed it aside. I got the kale salad (super refreshing and delicious) and the pappardelle with bolognese. The pappardelle was thick and wide and cooked perfectly. The bolognese was seasoned well and rich in flavor. The portions were huge and could've been a dinner plate but I wasn't complaining. I came here with a group for happy hour and stayed for dinner. There is plenty of parking in the strip and also a beautiful outdoor patio, which would be beneficial to have some patio heaters/ warmers for wherever the weather is more chilly. The atmosphere is somewhere between relaxed and cozy, hence being a bistro is a suitable name. We started off happy hour with several apps and drinks such as the Bubbly Hibiscus, El Guey, and Pomegranate Margarita plus fried calamari (decent size bites but slightly overfried/crunchy), parmesan truffle fries (couldn't taste the truffle, more like potato curls), flatbread hummus trio (A-OK hummus but the pita strips were too hard, not soft), and zaatar short rib sliders (nicely seasoned and tender). When we decided to order dinner, there was a long wait and it seemed to me that there were more than a few servers assisting our table, and it was unclear whether or not we actually had one server or multiple. Different people came every now and then to come check on us but it was honestly confusing. When we were able to finally place our orders for dinner, we chose many dishes amongst the variety they offered on their menu (pizza, flatbreads, pasta, salads, burgers, steaks, etc). I was able to try their jumbo lump crab cake (good portion, well seasoned, yet slightly dry), the bucatini pasta with added grilled salmon ( with Sicilian pesto, pistachio crumbs, mint giving very nice flavor and creaminess), and the seafood pasta (with shrimp, clams, calamari, pancetta in a spicy tomato basil sauce but sauce was not spicy to me and was quite bland and minimally coating the pasta). I did not have the room to try any of their desserts but others at the table did have the brownie cheesecake and said it was typical. Overall I think this place has a lot of potential given the location and the space they have. The drinks were fine and some of the food was too, but I expected more than just being alright. I am also not too sure on what kind of cuisine the restaurant is aiming to serve as there were many items that were just plain American fare, some Middle Eastern flair, and some Italian. Would I give George's another try? Maybe, but I'd have to have someone encourage me to join them in the venture. read more

Dined on a Sat evening with my wife and overall enjoyed our experience. Started with an Italian Paloma and bourbon with calamari for an appetizer. Great variety in the calamari; squid, shrimp, green beans, onions. The rings and tentacles were very small, but good flavor. Dinner consisted of Cacio Pepe w/ shrimp- very tasty, on the verge of being over salted (and we really like salt), but still quite good. And we tried one of the specials, chicken breast stuffed (rolled) with crab and baked and then topped w/ a garlic cream sauce and broccolini. Very flavorful and happy with the choice. Service was great, especially considering there were some large parties and what seem like only 2-3 waiters, but they were quick and the managers were quick to jump in to assist. "Maurillio" was our waiter and very welcoming. No real complaints, if I had to be picky - size of calamari pieces (not the serving size) and they practice the neat pour is one price, on the rocks carries a surcharge. The outdoor seating is really nice and they have really lovely servers...The man at the door is very kind and they accommodate really well for allergies. After ordering they give you really lovely pieces of bread (with herbs, garlic, and Parmesan) with a spicy butter sauce that has Calabrian pepper, garlic, and paprika! The bolognese and sides are really good and so is their branzino, however, the fish is hardly seasoned and does leave that "fishy taste". Not sure if this is considered a hidden gym or not but it was a pleasant surprise that I found on Yelp. My friend and I were looking for a spot to get pizza and this restaurant came up as a suggestion. When we arrived it was very nice inside and they have a cute patio outdoors that you can dine at as well. It's described as a bar and bistro so you can do wine pairings here. They customer service wqs exceptional. From the host to the server and even what I believe may have been a manager, they were all so pleasant and hospitable. We ordered cocktails and boy were they strong! I got the pear martini and my friend ordered the pomegranate margarita and I will definitely be back for happy hour! They brought us out a house bread with a sauce that tasted like butter and curry which was a unique and tasty starter. For my meal we got the prosciutto pizza (I can't remember the formal name) and my friend got their short rib with sweet potato tots and mashed potatoes on the side. The ribs were sooooo good!! Very well seasoned and sooo tender!!! I'm coming back again for it! The pizza was good as well and they even have it to where you can watch it come out of the oven. I have so many feelings about this place. It has potential but I think they have a lot of work to do. Service: We came on a Sunday night and it wasn't busy, but service was sooooo slow. It took over 15 minutes to even be asked for a drink order and we didn't get our entrees until an hour and 20 minutes into our reservation. It seems to be a management issue. We were on the patio, which wasn't full. There were 4 different servers out there that were also splitting tables inside. This caused major inefficiencies. And it wasn't just us. I saw someone from another table have to go inside to ask for their check. It was just not ok. When our server did come around, he wasn't rude or unfriendly, but didn't seem engaged. The only person that was attentive was the guy giving water refills. Drink: I had the El Guey. It seemed like it'd be very flavorful from the description of ingredients like mezcal, ginger, lime. Unfortunately it was tasteless. Crab Cake Appetizer: It was too mushy. There was lots of crab, and it was flavorful, but points off for the texture. Seafood Pasta: This was the highlight of the meal. It was truly delicious. It was spicy and seasoned well, and had a generous amount of all of the seafood. Cacio e Pepe: The flavor was there. But the pasta was chewy. It was bad. The noodles stuck together. They offered to remake it, which I would have liked, but we asked how long it'd be and he said at least 15 minutes. Given how much time it'd taken to get it the first time, we declined. I do think it would have been great though if the pasta was prepared correctly. Some other general things of note that were turnoffs. We both had pasta with long noodles but were never given spoons. So we were twirling the pasta around looking uncouth. There was no offering of fresh pepper which I thought was pretty standard at Italian places. I was given a comped dessert to make up for the pasta, and even it wasn't great. It was the buttercup chocolate cake and the cake itself lacked any taste. I'd have been better off not getting it. I was honestly torn between 2 and 3 stars. On the one hand, some of the food was really good. But the service, the bad noodles, and the lack of attention to detail see why I'm going with 2. I was surprised to find such a jewel in at strip mall on Bissonet. this is a charming little restaurant with beautiful tables in the inside and a great outdoor space. It was crowded, but the music was nice. Our waiter explained all the dishes and gave some great recommendations. The food was excellent. It seems to be more of a neighborhood place, but I think it's worth the visit. They take reservations and I would recommend it. We had a Caesar salad, which was very delicious. My friend and I wanted to meet for a quiet dinner on a Friday night. This is a new place that I suggested to to my friend that I had wanted to try (good yelp reviews) and she agreed. Was able to easily make resy online. Restaurant is at the end of a commercial strip mall in West U. Neighborhoods looks like lots of new renovations, trying to become more upscale. Drink- they have a bar, and few items on there drink menu, and very long wine list. Decided on the Paloma after recommendation from our server John Smith. It was refreshing. Food- we split the crab cake. I liked the sauce, and slaw. The crab cake wasn't as formed or crispy as I wanted, bur fair flavor. For entree we each had the prawn Arrabiatta (sp). Our server suggested we add linguine. He didn't even charge us for the upcharge. It was pretty good, comes with thick pieces of garlic bread. Prawns were plentiful, I liked it. Last server surprised us with a light dessert. It was a lemon sorbet with prosecco. I loved it, very Italian. Overall, our server gave us awesome recommendations. I can tell he wanted us to have a positive experience. While his service was slow in the beginng, I think he was giving us time to enjoy each other which I liked. Once he started giving us service, it was excellent. He chatted with us alot, was friendly. We ended up shutting the place down, last to leave, and they were even kind about that.
