I've been dying to stop and regret my decision. Overpriced and honestly terrible. My ice cream was terrible. It wasn't even creamy soft serve, it was the cheap gritty ice milk and my sprinkles tasted stale. I get the line was out the door but it did take a while for the milkshake. Staff was kind of standoff-ish but maybe because they were so busy. I ordered a medium scooped ice cream and she got one scoop. It also doesn't seem like they make the ice cream there either. Came here after some snowboarding with the awesome sauce Dr. Matthew, Dr. Shannon, and Ryan! The fried mushrooms were life-changing. I love the name! It cracks me up for a long while. The Empire Dairy King has got all the small town ice cream parlor charm you can ask for. But it serves more than just dairy! Classics like burgers, hot dogs, fries, onion rings... make the place smell greasy but people like us are attracted by the grease and smoke! We waited in line patiently to get our orders. They did not disappoint! Our fries and onion rings came in paper sacks where the oil obviously soaked through. The fries (and our friends let us taste their Sweet Potato Fries) were great. Onion rings are big and just what a child would remember as onion rights. Not the best batter and don't expect "tempura style", but it hits the spot. Unfortunately the dairy goods are lacking. There were so many options and flavors to choose from ice cream wise, but we ended up going with the swirl soft serve in cups instead of cones. Very delicious and perfect consistency - exactly what you're looking for when you want soft serve ice cream! After checking out the menu there, we only wished we were hungrier so we could have tried more ice cream and maybe a grilled cheese or chicken sandwich. I have such a soft spot for any place that feels like a sneaky, humble, hidden gem and Empire Dairy King is EXACTLY that. I can't even tell you how many times I've done the DEN--WP--DEN drive and seen this place in tiny little Empire and thought "Huh. Looks worth a stop." In truth, it took me over a decade to actually stop. And now I'm sitting here disappointed that I wasted so many years just driving by! Let's start with the menu. SO many options. Burgers! Melts! Dogs! All the fried sides you could dream of wishing for. And then the ice cream and shakes and malts and sundaes. This place truly has it all. A packed menu and (I'm willing to bet) all of it, delicious. My friend and I both got cheeseburgers and loved them. Just a humble little cheeseburger with the works. Nothing fancy, but perfect in its simplicity. A humble, tasty little burger. We also got fries (great) and fried mushrooms (good, but I think I'll try the fried pickles next time I go). And then, obviously, shakes (this place makes a great shake). They have a cozy little seating area inside and more seating on the patio outside. I'd imagine on busy days it may be difficult to find a seat, but I would definitely say it's worth the wait. Please consider this your sign if you're thinking about it: Stop here. We were driving by when I saw the sign for white chocolate dipped cones. I am a big white chocolate fan asp we hung a U-turn and went it. The king is a cute shop. There are tables inside and out. The clerk was friendly, took our orders and got them to us quickly. The ice cream was soft serve although they do have hard ice cream as well. Lovely place!! My friend and I finished a ski day at Winter Park and stopped here on our way home. A cute little place with some great food! Best soft serve I have ever had, and the burger and fries were good as well. I liked the ambiance and the workers were super nice. Decided to detour on our way home and we were completely let down. All signs and door was open so we went in, stood at the register for 15 minutes while a guy in the back talked to his girlfriend on the phone. Two other customers also came in behind us, they even checked the restrooms to make sure other employees weren't there. Since the guy on the phone couldn't even be bothered to come and tell us anything we all left. A mid-week pow (i.e. powder day for all you non-winter sport folk) day brought my friend's and I in to this establishment after a gloriously long day of uncrowded, sun filled skiing. Being unfamiliar with what Empire has to offer in the food department I was excited to stop and check out Dairy King. While there are a handful of parking spots out front there is copious parking across the way (along the road as well as in a little parking lot near to the visitors center). Should you choose to park across the street from Dairy King please use the crosswalk. The traffic is aplenty and the traffic speeds can be high. Nearly everyone in our group ordered something different. Dreyer's hard mint ice cream for one, soft serve with a candy mix in for another, and what did I have do you ask? A grilled cheese and a soft serve vanilla ice cream (Mom, I hope you aren't reading this as I know how much you like me to eat my veggies). The grilled cheese was spectacular. The bread was buttery and toasted to perfection. The cheese was warm and gooey. Just the way I like it. As there were several bottles of hot sauce handy (Denver made) I couldn't resist but to try a few dabs on my sandwich. Delicious! I even purchased a bottle of the hot sauce on my way out. Now for the soft served ice cream. I am a long time lover of all things soft served ice cream. Being a soft serve ice cream connoisseur for nearly 30 years I expect a lot, and Dairy King sure did deliver. First of all they have my favorite cake cones. Second their soft serve is creamy, delicious, and swirled just right. I've actually been back twice since my initial visit and I get a cone every time (sometimes size small, sometimes size medium - the medium is pretty big so get ready). While this location is on the smaller side it does feature two well cared after restrooms as well as a handful of tables should you care to dine in. The staff are young, friendly, and hard working so be kind and tip them well. This establishment does not take credit cards so be sure to have cash or your check book handy. After a long day of skiing. My boyfriend and I decided to stop by an interesting looking establishment advertising foods and some gooooood olllll' fashun milkshakes. Upon entering the abode my boyfriend and I were overcome with giddy and glee by the variety of fried goods to please ourselves with. As I looked past the food bulletin I saw a cozy reminder of home down south. I was welcomed with cheers of greeting just like my grand mammy used to do when I waltzed into her house. The service was efficient and the food was made with love. I coulda sworn ol' auntie lee made it. I was satisfied to completion with my order of two big big ol' juicy dawgs.
