I was so disappointed with all the supermarkets good looking fresh seafood cases and almost always being disappointed because the fresh fish had bad smells and taste I very really buy fresh fish anymore so I decided to stop here because I really like fresh fish. The have a nice selection of fresh seafood and frozen seafood with other items in the coolers and packages of seafood related sides and related packages. They have a nice variety of smoked fish with a small wine selection. The coolers have all kinds items but I didn't really check them out because fresh was the only seafood I was getting. They have daily specials if you check the web site and that's what I did today with 20% off smoked items. I got a chunk of the wild Canadian smoked white fish and a fillet of Scotland farmed ocean trout as my first samples from the store. read more

Excellent Korean street taco meal kit! Beef was tender and flavorful. Sides of a slaw/shredded cabbage mixture as well as pickled red onions and sliced green onions were just enough. We actually had six tacos from this kit. Four corn tortillas were included. We had flour in our house so used those for the two extras. I can't wait to see what's coming in two weeks! Imagine how happy I was to find a place that sells sushi grade fish?! I was ecstatic!! This is so out of my way that I find it hard to frequent this place. I would come here regularly for more seafood if they were closer. Prices are pricey as expected. They had everything one would need in order to make sushi, which I found super convenient because that meant that I didn't have to go to other stores. Everything except for avocado or cucumber that is.... Anyway the store is clean and did not smell fishy to me. The employees are super friendly. I've never had a bad encounter at any of my visits. I wanted to find a place that sold sushi grade fish. Luckily, I stumbled upon Empire. The variety of fish was great; additionally, they sell chicken, pork, and lamb. I bought sushi grade salmon so I could eat it in a poke bowl. Someone working there explained how save it was and also gave me a tuna alternative they had. The salmon was $11.99 for the sushi grade body; a big tuna steak was $18.99. The staff was very helpful. There is also a rewards program you can sign up for online. I recommend doing that because the prices here can be expensive depending on what you are buying. For example, one lobster tail that I saw was $36. read more

We've lived just a few miles away from Empire for years, but only just made it in last week (for shame!). Empire kind of reminds me of Tower Chicken on the South side. They do one thing (seafood), they have a lot of it, and the store doesn't smell especially good. That said, Empire is super, super clean from what I could see (where Tower can be a little sketchy) and all of the fish on display looked beautiful. Prices are on the higher side - think Sendik's vs. Pick'N'Save - but are competitive if you take advantage of whatever's on special. We left with some lovely sockeye salmon fillets which grilled up beautifully, and some precooked/cleaned jumbo shrimp. The people working were helpful and friendly too. I really like that Empire has a small selection of other stuff - rubs, spices, etc and even a small rack of wine. If you're pressed for time, you can run in, grab some stuff to throw on the grill and not have to make a separate stop at the liquor store. Empire's not a place I'd do my everyday shopping ('cause I'm not a millionaire) but when I'm looking for a good piece of fish I'll certainly be back. read more

Stopped yesterday to pick up things for dinner, I was pleasantly surprised to see Growing Power selling vegetables in the side yard. The vendor said they're there every Friday afternoon. Hurray! I was able to get ingredients for sides to go with dinner! I was a little disappointed by Empire, though. Their selection is large, but they're pricey and quality isn't as good as my local grocery, and much lower than our other local fish market. 1# of smallish frozen gulf shrimp (ettouffe for dinner!) was $14.95 and was a little freezer-burned. A dozen Chesapeake Bay oysters was on special for $11.95, but were not as fresh as they should have been. It seems they've sacrificed quality for variety, never good for a fish monger. read more

King of fish in Milwaukee!! Ok, there really aren't that many choices. There's Empire, and St. Paul Fish Market. Don't even consider grocery stores. Brrr, they don't play the same game. So, here are a few reasons why Empire is better than St. Paul: 1. Empire's selection is much larger. 2. Empire has gobs of parking. 3. The employees at Empire are helpful and super nice! The worker's at St. Paul have a certain Salty Sea-Dog a-holeness tor them. I always feel like I'm bothering them. 4. Empire has a great selection of accoutrements and frozen pre-packaged seafood products. 5. You can see the processing area at Empire. It's super clean and makes you feel good about what you are buying. 6. Empire sells sushi-grade seafood and all the extras for when you want to go maki-crazy. I bought sushi grade tuna. It was good quality. They sell nori, wasabi, etc. in case you are in need of ingredients while you are buying fish. I also bought some mussels. They were fresh and I didn't have to throw any out. I know of a few restaurants in Milwaukee that order from them so you know this place is legit. They close at 6pm on weekdays and are not open on Sundays so keep that in mind if you are cooking during the week. read more

Happily stumbled upon Empire Fish Co just when I had been wondering where to get fresh fish in Mke. Boy, did I experience some sticker shock though. Saw that the wild salmon was $24.99 per lb(Is that good? bad?). Not cheap, but I really wanted some fresh wild salmon. I asked the lady behind the counter for two pieces. I should have been more specific with how many ounces I wanted because she ended up giving me two pieces that weighed over a pound, thus making my cost over $26. Definitely wasn't expecting to pay that much and didn't need that much salmon. Ah well, I should have said something as I kind of felt taken advantage of. If you're stopping in here, check the prices and be clear and specific about how much fish you want to buy. The good news was that after cooking it the salmon was super delicious. Empire is a magical magical place. I was making a fancy pants dinner and decided that seafood needed to make an appearance. I wandered into Empire and found some beautiful huge scallops. The guy behind the counter was extremely knowledgeable and gave me detailed instructions on how to cook them. When I mentioned that I was also thinking about doing lobster, he whipped out a pamphlet on how to cook lobster just about any way you could imagine. Empire used to be a fabulous family-owned fresh fish market. Since they sold to new owners the quality is very poor, product is often mislabeled, and prices are high. Occasionally the will have smoked Lake Michigan whitefish & chub from that is fresh, which is why they got two stars instead of one. read more
