This was a completely different dining experience for me, as we had limited time for lunch, so we tried Door Dash for the first time today ... and it could not have been easier! We split a Fat Cat sandwich ($20.25) from Empire State Deli, which is a full pound of grilled NY style pastrami on toasted Rye, with Swiss Cheese, mustard and Russian Dressing. Delicious, and more than enough for two to share. Door Dash took nine-minutes, from pickup to putting the hot delicious sandwich in my hands. I am super pleased, both with Empire State Deli, (a business where I have never been, but has earned a high Yelp rating, which gave me confidence to order sight-unseen) and with Door Dash, whose slick website and fast service means I'll be ordering through them again. This review is for take-out only. I have walked by this place plenty of times over the years, but somehow have never tried it until today. The menu is quite extensive. I got the Central Park Salad with Buttermilk Ranch dressing. It had herb-roasted Chicken, Tomatoes, Red Onion and Avocado on a bed of Romaine. It was excellent! The chicken had amazing flavor. I was pleased that they used real Buttermilk Ranch also. (I'm a Ranch snob and hate the imitation stuff.) I would definitely order this again. I will note that the portion size was much smaller than our usual place we go to in our building nearby. The plastic box was half the width of what we normally get in the building where I work. My coworker got the Chicken Tortilla Soup. She thought it was very good also. We hope to go back soon and try some of the other choices. read more

This was a restaurant we definitely wanted to check out. The menu looks amazing. Unfortunately when we tried to eat there prior to the Sugar Bowl game, we stopped in and they were closed. I talked to the owner and he told me they were closing. Not sure if it was just for the day (this was the day after the tragedy on New Years Day), or if it was a longer term closure. I would hope it's not long term. We would definitely like to check it out as the menu is full of things that we love to eat. It was pretty good. Not great. I got a Philly cheesesteak and it says that it is oozing with cheese..... I was hard-pressed to find much cheese at all and the meat was overcooked. For the price you pay for a premium sandwich. I guess I expected better. If you compare it to Jersey Mikes it's not even close. Jersey Mikes is 100 times better. Maybe the line cook who prepared the sandwich should go have a cheesesteak at Jersey Mikes and that would give him a better idea how to cook it. read more

Wow. I'm in from out of town and I honestly just wanted to find a good deli sandwich and some soup. I stumbled upon this place and it seemed perfect .... And it was. The local feel you get when you're in this place is awesome. You walk up to the counter and order and wait for your name to be called - my food came out very quickly and even more fresh and hot. You could tell everything is cut and made to order. I personally kept it simple and got the 6" Clipper and lobster bisque. Both absolutely delish! The service was also very nice and welcoming. My first time eating here and I was so happy to see some thought put into vegetation food! They had 2 really good veggie options - a veggie sandwich with eggplant and veggies and a black bean burger. I got the sandwich and my colleague got the burger. He definitely LOVED his burger and devoured it in 5 minutes lol! It was very well done! For me, the veggie sandwich was very surprising, because it was so flavorful! the hoagie roll was great, the eggplant had been well seasoned and the sandwich overall was delicious! We also got the fries to share - very well done! Crispy on the outside, soft inside and the perfect thickness! The cup of tomato soup I got was not the best I had ever had, because it was very thick and felt like it hadnt been cooked long enough. Overall, excellent experience for a small office deli. We came by during their lunch hour, probably around 12:30pm, so it was no surprise that they had a rush considering this place is inside an office building. That said, the wait for food was quite long after ordering. The price points are okay to me as someone who lives in LA, but not sure if they're considered a bit higher than average in New Orleans. In my group, we ordered the corned beef sandwich, Philly cheesesteak, and a turkey with bacon wrap. I wish we had read their prominent sign earlier (our fault), but we opted not to get a salad because we're scared of romaine right now lol. Their sign states, however, that they're subbing out romaine in their salads, which is nice of them. Corned beef was good, less salty than other places. Would recommend you passing on the Philly cheesesteak - so much bread, so little meat. Couldn't really taste much aside from bread. The roll it came on though was nice and soft and tasty. They do provide honey mustard and Dijon mustard from Boar's Head in little sauce packets, which I used plenty of to aid in my journey for flavor. The wrap was good! Again, if you like more flavor, definitely recommend using their mustard. Overall, it was good, but nothing to write home about. I probably wouldn't recommend it to someone who's visiting town and looking for New Orleans eats (not that they're at all advertising to be one), but it's probably a good option for those that work in nearby office buildings or locals looking for lunch. read more

This place was closing,,, I walked in the side entrance of the deli. These people were fantastic. Normally when a place is closing in the restaurant business, and someone walks in the last minute, the product is normally lack-luster. Not here,,, they welcomed me like it was the middle of lunch time. Totally unexpected!! The sandwich and fries were probably one of the best I've had in New Orleans! As a native New York City girl, people always ask me what I miss most about home and without fail my answer is always NY delis! So Empire feels like a little slice of home for me with delicious sandwiches. They also have Dr. Browns diet cream soda which was like a ritual growing up and hard to find in New Orleans. 2/14/19 Arrived at 7:15 only to realize they don't open until 7:30. No problem we can just walk around for a little bit. We came back at 7:30 only to find the doors still locked, lights out and a closed sign in the window. Some guy in a Jetta races up to the curb, gets out and unlocks the door only to let the little girl that came with him to go in. I asked if the place was open now and he said, "No, we are running late today". Puzzled I said, "we can't come in?" He says, "No!" He came back out a few moments later and said to me as he ran to his car, "it won't be open for at least another 10 minutes maybe more". He gets into his car and floors it down the street. I guess that means I need to find somewhere else to eat. This place is not going to stay in business for long if they don't open on time. People have places to go and meetings to get to and there are so many other places to eat close by. Super friendly staff! We love to watch Mardi Gras parades near here so that we can stop in when hungry. They keep the place really clean and always serve their food nice and hot, which is great on cooler days. Most of all, I love that the staff is very hospitable... calling by your name, interacting with my kids while I'm pulling out my wallet... those little things go a long way towards having a good experience. read more

Saddest Ruben I have ever had. Hate to leave bad reviews but dam that sandwich had so little corn beef on it. The hot dog for 7.99 was as small as it gets. I have like three fave deli's in New Orleans and this is one of them. A local who supports the community and has reopened phase one for take out and delivery. An Established restaurant that has a great variety of sandwiches, and beyond. My fave being their take on the Reuben. The Brooklyn Dodger is my fave, a hearty sandwich with beautiful bread, and built big enough for two. however, I always have to get more when the family comes so my other go to is the great bambino, another take on that reuben. LOL give me some onion rings, some corn and shrimp chowder and a beer, and I'm good for the day. I am so thankful this place is still serving the community. Nothing else compares to a real New York Deli like Empire. They have even changed their hours to reflect community needs during this pandemic, so later hours means DINNER is served. Since then I've been back several times over the last few weeks and tried several different sandwiches, and I have to say, everyone one has delighted so far. Fair warning - the brisket sandwich can get a bit messy so have some paper towels handy!! Empire State Delicatessen is located in the bottom of One Shell Square. It offers good food and fast service during the lunchtime hours. Most of my experiences here have been when visiting people who work in the building, or on a break from something at the courthouse. It is very convenient to both locations and is frequently crowded at lunch. I recommend coming for 11 to avoid the rush. I have had several of heir sandwiches, but my favorites are the club and brisket sandwich. They have some fancy baseball themed name, but that sport is lame so I don't care to remember the official title. If you want some privacy, there is a table set inside of two walls. There isn't much room, but it is somewhat private. The other tables are set out in the open in the large dining area so privacy is difficult. If you're in the CBD and want a sandwich, check this place out. read more

Wow! The wife and I had a Brooklyn Dodger and a Great Bambino and an order of onion rings. The sandwiches were absolutely delicious. Very fresh, hot, and so tasty. The onion rings though.... phenomenal! The restaurant itself is clean, has a good amount of seating, and has some cool pictures on the walls. This is my second time eating here. I had the A-Train (roast beef, grilled onions, pepper jack cheese on Italian bread) and a order of fries. The sandwich was hot, the bread soft, but the meat was as dry as the Utah salt flats. The fries were excellent, though, and they gave you nearly a wheelbarrow of them. It's not Subway and that's a step up, but the dishes I've had from the place have not really wowed me. I'll try again, but it's doubtful that I'd go here regularly. read more
