First of all, they have one of the best equality in pay practices I have ever seen. At the Turkey and the Wolf, "everyone makes the same pay" as part of an equitable compensation model where all hourly HOH kitchen, & FOH wait staff receive equal pay rates, and comprehensive benefits like health insurance, free mental health care, and paid time off. The food is amazing! Huge serving sizes with little twists & additions. Everything was fresh and tasted so, so good. It's been almost a year since I was in New Orleans but that didn't stop me from once again daydreaming about what might just be the best salad I've ever had when I saw a pile of cabbages in the grocery store again today. Yes, that's how good the cabbage salad at Turkey and the Wolf is. It's almost a shame that it took me so long to find out that a mound of shredded cabbage could be so delicious. I'm not even a big fan of coconut flavor but the perfectly balanced dressing pairs amazingly with the crunch of cabbage, sunflower seeds, and pig ear cracklin bits. My brother also ordered a fried bologna sandwich that was huge and although I'm not big on bologna it was pretty tasty. We checked out the cool merch while waiting to order and for our food and enjoyed our meal on the covered patio space because the inside was already kind of full. The staff were warm and friendly. Turkey and the Wolf came highly recommended by a friend and it did not disappoint! We arrived around 11:45am on Friday afternoon and there was no wait. However, I know wait times can be out the door so plan accordingly. We were dropped off by Uber, but in terms of parking, it's mainly street parking. Overall, the shop is pretty small. They have a handful of tables outside and more seating inside but it's not huge -- hence the longer lines. It's also quite eclectic with serving on plastic McDonald's plates and the music that was playing. We ordered: The ham sandwich, wedge salad, and a delicious pickle cocktail The ham sandwich had excellent flavor! I wish it had a but more ham on it, but overall the flavor was 10/10! The wedge salad had too much salad dressing. I LOVE blue cheese and blue cheese salad dressing but the lettuce to dressing ratio was off. Could have used less as I felt so much went to waste. The thick cut bacon on the salad was the exact salty touch it needed and the fresh dill was such a fresh touch. The pickle cocktail was delicious! I wish I would have ordered another one! You can find Turkey and the Wolf at 739 Jackson Ave, New Orleans, LA 70130 - this was a short walk from where I was staying on St Charles and on the way to the breweries along the Mississippi to the south (I ended up going to Abita and Urban South). My client meeting got cancelled my first day in New Orleans so I decided to do a bit of exploring and thought I'd walk down to Abita and Urban South near the river. Checking out Yelp there were some interesting reviews for this restaurant and it was basically on my way, so this was my first stop. The building is somewhat nondescript - it looks to have been at one point a service station occupying a corner lot. There appears to be some on street parking. Besides the line outside to the door, I observe that most visitors walked up or were dropped off by ride shares. I arrived just before prime lunch time on a Monday - It took about 20 minutes for me to get through the short line outside the door - there were 10 people in line as I was approaching and it got down to 6 by the time I got in line. Once inside the line continues to the counter - around another 10 minutes. Inside all the tables were occupied, most outside were available to after ordering I went there to sit and enjoy the nice day. The menu is pretty simple, with 5 sandwiches and 5 Not sandwiches options. I went with their signature dish, the fried bologna sandwich, with an order of crinkle cut fries. I made the mistake of not grabbing napkins and they don't bring them to the table so make sure you grab some along with any utensils you may need (and ketchup if that's your preference). I also ordered a Diet Coke (canned). The food took about 20 minutes. Fried bologna - $13.99 - leighann's bologna via's mom's hot mustard, potato chips, shrettuce, mayo, and American cheese on big toast. Crinkle cut fries - $3.99 In all I liked the Fried Bologna but thought it a bit too wet - there's something like a slaw made up by the hot mustard, shrettuce and mayo that had things swimming a bit more than I like. The chips gave the sandwich some much needed texture. The sandwich is also incredibly greasy - I attempted a go without a napkin then a couple of bites into realized that I erred - went in with greasy hands to pick up napkins. The fries weren't anything to write home about - I ended up leaving a few - this meal is very filling. For fast casual this place is about what you would expect - maybe a little attitude but that's typical of a trendy spot like this. Well let me tell you I was overly impressed we got a fried chicken pot pie is what they called it it looked like a Spanish empanada little more bubbly crisp it was incredible that was fried just like it said it was delicious with chicken that was white meat dark meat not processed just fresh chicken then we got a burger that said special sauce lettuce pickles onions on a sesame seed bun. That delivered like I was 17 and had McDonald's before they use all that processed meat. So I did get a flavor that I've had 41 years ago. Despite the line, I was easily able to secure a table inside. The interior is full of fun and quirky decor. Wherever you look something unique will catch your eye. The collard green melt was a life changing sandwich. It felt comforting and nostalgic, while being the only collard green sandwich I've ever had. I read over and over about the Collard Green Melt and I could not understand how greens could go on a sandwich. Well let me tell you, it works and it was well done. First the bread was toasted to perfection and thick enough to handle a potential moist disaster. The cheese and sauces melded together wonderfully. There wasn't much of a line when I went, but I've seen the lines wrap around the building. It was also nice enough to eat on the patio. The inside is a bit tight. It's best to go with friends so you can try and find a seat but once you do, you will enjoy really good food on knockoff McD's plates. I would have never thought to get a collard green sandwich but I was sooo impressed by the depth of flavor and the way that they were able to make the bread crispy on the outside with the greens and cheese soft and melty on the inside without the sandwich completely falling apart and turning into a mess in your hands. The sandwich stayed in tact through my last bite and was just as good as people say it is. The shredded cabbage salad was also so interesting and flavorful. It all started with a rare visit to the neighborhood used bookstore where I came across upon their cookbook. The name was "catchy" so one can't be surprised that I found myself flipping through all the pages to see what it was all about. Sure enough, the words and photos captivated me enough to walk out of there with only this book in hand. The words were fun. Their style was fun. Their personality came across in everything and every part of the book. I found myself thoroughly curious - enough to eventually book this trip down to NOLA. (Found out later that Bon Appetit had name them best new restaurant in America years back.) They were my first stop in NOLA and I couldn't be more excited. I joined the line that had formed way before they opened that morning and chatted with some of the locals as to how often they would visit this spot. Most that I talked to that day visit on average three times a week, which really says a lot about who they are. Not only are they a "tourist" spot at this point, they've also seemingly cemented their place into the local palate. The line moved fast the moments their doors opened. It didn't take long before I stepped into the establishment and felt ported to another time and place. Stickers and "art" adored just about every aspect of the space. Definitely quirky and cartoonish...and very much hipster. It was playful and expressive and even the staff are notably contributing to the overall atmosphere of this tiny 30-40 seater space. Walked up to the counter at my turn and placed an order for all the items I've previously bookmarked to try from the book before parking myself at the nearest open table. Fast, simple, and no-fuss service. Let's dooooo this. Kitchen was obviously efficient. Sure, it's a relatively simple menu but they definitely had their kitchen gears greased and going. I watched as food flew out of the kitchen to all the different tables at quite the epic speed. They were fast and efficient. Impressive. My turn came as quickly and one by one my dishes arrived. I took my pictures and then just dug in like a voracious wolf. Must. Consume. It. All. For all the hype, these were just plain normal dishes and flavors re-plated and re-branded. Nothing really blew me out of mind considering this is NOLA and the food scene is GREAT. They were just...normal sandwiches. Flavors were good but just "normal" and as expected. Luckily, I didn't plan my whole trip around this NOR had to wait in line like some of the others that came much later than I did. Otherwise, I would be thoroughly disappointed. Funny thing is I had my book with me and initially wanted to have it signed. After dining here though, I didn't even bother and probably will donate it back to the original used bookstore I originally purchased it from. Worth one visit just to experience it for yourself.
