Tampa has shifted all rental cars to a separate facility that you reach by shuttle train. The ride takes about five minutes, it runs smoothly, and in the handful of times I have used it, I have never had a delay or a hiccup. It is an easy, predictable part of the arrival routine. National is simple to find, and as an Emerald Aisle member, I still get to bypass the counter and head straight to the garage. I used to be Executive, but I am regular Emerald now, which means choosing from a slightly lower tier. That was not a problem today. For this visit, I specifically wanted a minivan and had my pick of at least a dozen, walking right past a row of SUVs and sedans to get the most boring and generic one with a Florida tag. Exiting the facility and heading to downtown was just as smooth. A friendly agent checked my ID, waved me through, and I was on the road within moments. The van itself was spotless, had fewer than 2000 miles, and ran without a single issue for the entire week. Returning the car was equally straightforward. The signage is clear, the lanes are well marked, and the whole process moves quickly. I had the email with my final receipt before I even stepped back onto the train to the terminal. They offered to put us on a waitlist for one to be returned and cleaned, but we were hoping to get on the road right away. When I asked about other available options, they quickly offered a Volkswagen Jetta--a smaller sedan--which ended up being a perfect fit. The staff handled the adjustment on the spot, completed the paperwork efficiently, and had us on our way in about 15 minutes. The car was clean, comfortable, and turned out to be a great choice for fuel efficiency and travel during our week in Florida. I found, while getting my car working on elsewhere and renting from Nichols & Dimes, that they have a mechanic who is super nice. So, I started taking my car there whenever it had an issue. They were always super fast, and charged a very reasonable amount. I eventually bought a new car and, because it had a warrantee, no longer needed to go to Nichols & Dimes. My warrantee expired, and I just had my first issue. I called Nichols & Dimes and they fixed my issue right away. I had forgotten just how great they are! I would recommend them to anyone needing a rental car or a good mechanic!

Upon our arrival at the Avis desk at the Tampa airport (around 8:00pm on a Monday), there was no line and no wait to pick up our car. The Avis representative (Elizabeth) was super helpful and got us on our way quickly. Our car was easy to find and was clean, fully fueled, and in great condition. We had decided not to purchase the optional toll road package, but changed our mind when we saw the GPS options, and adding this was no problem on the app. The car return was even easier. We just pulled up, unloaded our bags, and a rep was right there to scan us in. I waited until we had our final bill to do this review to make sure there were no "surprises" and there were not. Our bill was exactly what we expected with no "shenanigans" to be found. I will definitely rent from Avis the next time I am in Tampa.

At that point, it felt less like a mistake and more like a reflection of how little he cared about the customer experience. When I asked to speak to a manager, he brushed me off and told me I could "Yelp or Google review him," which says everything about his attitude and lack of accountability.

Absolutely the worst rental experience I've had at Tampa International Airport…read more I'm a Budget Fastbreak member, but there was absolutely no priority service or meaningful customer support. I rented a vehicle for seven days, and on the second day I received a charge for a one-way rental that I never requested. It was clearly a clerical error on Budget's part. When I called, I was told not to worry and that it would be corrected when I returned the vehicle. When I returned the car, I was then told there was nothing the local office could do and that I would have to wait for Corporate to process a refund. My original rental was approximately $430, but I was charged $1,462 because of Budget's mistake. Now I have to wait for Corporate to issue a credit while they hold over $1,000 of my money. Mistakes happen, but the complete lack of accountability and inability of the local office to correct an obvious billing error is unacceptable. If you value accurate billing and responsive customer service, I would recommend choosing another rental company.
