I've tasted better sandwiches at Chili's for about half the price. If you can't find street parking (good luck since it's downtown LA), valet parking is available for $8. I only came here during recruiting lunches and found the service to be good (though we always came in groups of 8 or more) and the food decent. I enjoy their meatloaf (huge portion) and crab cakes. The gimmick is that you're dining in a former firehouse, complete with fire pole. Upstairs dining also available, next to said pole. One word = gross. The decor would have been nice 20 years ago. Today, it's dark and depressing. The waitresses look like bored strippers. Our waitress had wet hair, no make-up and lacked joy. The drink I ordered was supposed to be some kind of spicy long-island iced tea but tasted like mop water with triple sec. I only drank 1/2 of it. The chili cheese fries were flavorless with large chunks of old beef cut up on them. YUCK. The chicken wings were totally overcooked, dried-out and also tasteless. My girlfriend taste-tested 3 wines for happy hour, all tasted off. She had a beer instead. SOS: Gordon Ramsey, this place needs your help! Never shall I return... Why do I not think of checking Yelp before going into any restaurant including the airport. This place is horrible. I gave it 2 stars as the server tried hard and maybe I just ordered the wrong thing. First off I got the Engine Company Chili. Who can ruin Chili? Answer: Engine Company 28. The beef was not very good tasting and they didn't even bother to break up the ground beef very much. This really reminded me of the College Dorms attempt at Chili, no taste, very bland and 10 bucks for a bowl that cost .50 cents to make. If the Enginer Company reads feedback, here are some added ingredients for you: Chili Powder, Cumin, a little Tobasco maybe? Something to put flavor in. I asked for a small salad which I paid $5 bucks for, appreciated as it wasn't on the menu. The blue cheese was out of a 5 gallon jar and the lettuce as old. Next time, I will check Yelp first....oh, and $9.90 for a friggin' beer. $28 total for that worthless meal. I love this DTLA restaurant. An old firehouse turned restaurant. I've mostly had the burger or turkey burger here which is delicious. Their chili is great too...just don't do the veggie chili because it's not flavorful, go for the meat! Valet parking only, full bar, and takes reservations. I've also been able to catch a shuttle to and from the Ahmanson here for a show which is convenient :). read more

From looking at the happy hour schedule, this place is in happy hour literally all the time. The only question that came to mind was when this place wasn't serving happy hour specials. I don't care if it's a ploy or not, I just like the idea of happy hour all the time. Walking about 2 blocks from home, I wasn't too worried about the parking situation here but this is downtown, so it already sucks. For those wondering, yes they still have the fireman pole, but the top is blocked off, so there ain't gonna be sliding down for a fast exit. Once the pizzazz wears out about dining in a former fire station, you may start to wonder where your food is. It take a bit long, and your server might be out there taking orders or even behind the bar mixing drinks. Our server was still super kool though, but the slow service and food prep makes a hungry stomach growl. -=-Happy Hour Food-=- So we sampled a bit from the HH menu. Pulled Pork Silders and Mac + Cheese were our picks. I probably wouldn't get the Mac and cheese unless you were feeding your 10 year old. It didn't bring anything special at all to the table despite the added bacon and blue cheese. Edible yes, but don't expect miracles. Pulled pork sliders, I could recommend atleast for being not dry. I would have sampled more, but decided to also get a burger from the dinner menu. -=-Dead Hippy Burger-=- The highlights here are bacon, avocado and poached egg. Everything good, and literally no way to mess this up. I dug it, but with the other dining options literally around the corner, I probably wouldn't head to Engine Co No 28 for the burgers alone. Other tempting menu items started dabbing into the $$$ range, but if the burger doesn't exactly fit, then I'll leave that territory to the other explorers. The bar is long and seats maybe 20, we cozied up and I was blown away by the wooden cabinets filled with wine..really nicely done.. Now what I didnt know or bothered to read is they have a bar menu that is $5 dollars all day everday..Draught Beer, house white/red wine, well drinks and apps..The house red was really good..we ordered the meatloaf sliders, wings and chili fries to start..Loved the wings, not impressed with the sliders (they were good but needed more meat), the chili fries were really good and I mean really good.. Our bartender Chris was amazing, funny, talkative, had some great recommendations on other food and wine..just a fun classy guy. We dined here for DineLA and were pretty disappointed. The menu was the highest of the three DineLA menu prices ($44) and the food just didn't live up to that. The Mac and Cheese Balls were good, until we got to the cold center. Everything else was fine, but there was way too much food. We would have preferred less food with more focus on delivering on the price. We told the waitress we'll be taking our time and she didn't check back with us until we had asked for her attention. Food: Grilled Shrimp Risotto - delish! Rice wasn't overcooked and it was served with 6 prawn shrimps that didn't taste like they were frozen. Chicken Fried Steak - to die for! The gravy was just different. It is always decent food with higher prices. I went here for a business lunch and I got the following: 1) Onion Soup - $6 - Needed more seasoning (2.5 / 5) 2) Grilled Chicken Breast with split pea risotto - $20 (3.5 / 5); Best part of the dish was the moist chicken and sauteed mushrooms. The sides were typical sides. Spinach and garlic mash but didnt taste much garlic. Spinach seemed like they were just steamed. The country fried steak was good. This restaurant is very nearby my work and visited for the first time the other day. The atmosphere is interesting, kind of old fashioned feel. I ordered the buffalo chicken salad and a side of Mac and cheese. Was highly disappointed. The Mac and cheese was soupy and grainy. The buffalo chicken salad was bland, the chicken was okay, I wish there had been more ingredients maybe some blue cheese or tomatoes on it.
