Where to begin? First: Surly counter people. "Whaddaya want?!" is NOT the way to greet customers. I get that everyone has a bad day. I didn't want to be the spokesperson for my group, either, but I dealt with it, ya know? Second: Limp, way too thin crust, with a bucket of sauce poured on it. It was as though they hadn't even allowed it to finish proofing before they threw stuff on top of it and shoved it in the oven. And let me tell you, I never in a million years would've thought I would say that there were too many toppings on a 3-meat pizza. That wasn't the case this time; it was a case of bacon/sausage/pepperoni, easily twice as much of each as would have been reasonable, on overflowing sauce, with so little cheese it was pathetic. Did someone just not want to open another bin of shredded mozz? This was in 2015, shortly after the current (?) owners took over. Also: - Bathroom: filthy. As in, sink covered in hair that looked remarkably like that of the blonde girl covering the register. - Floors: Also filthy. Actual DIRT on the floor, along with dead leaves and grass that were probably tracked in on someone's shoes. - Table: Also less than clean. A long line of orange grease from edge to edge along one side, which my daughter's friend nearly ended up wearing. - Staff: Inexcusably rude. - Drinking glasses had dishwasher detergent residue IN them, and I was sneered at when I brought all four glasses back up front. "They look fine to me!" Yes, because Coca-Cola is s'posed to have white, cloudy, LEMON SCENTED streaks in it, you twits. Never going back. Ok so I wouldn't say this pizza was great but it wasn't bad either. It was pretty much... meh. Not memorable at all. The main thing that was memorable was that they screwed us over on the price. They charged us $20.00 for a one topping pizza. I just checked their website and it says a one topping pizza is $11.75. So they completely ripped us off. I have made the mistake of eating here for the last time. When I first started working downtown, Engine House seemed like a viable place to do business, and snag lunch from every once in a while. Originally, the food was definitely of par, but it's the service that really gets me. A few months back I ordered two pizzas to be delivered to my home, while I was at work. I figured I would race the delivery driver to my house, and have time to have lunch with my father (who was waiting for me til I got out of work) on my break. Obviously, I won the race...by FORTY MINUTES. That means that for two small pizzas and a 2 liter, I waited a solid hour and fifteen minutes for a delivery that is literally a straight shot up Lafayette St. When I got the pizzas, they were cold, partially burnt, and looked like they were tossed around in the back seat before they even thought about delivering them to me. The total came to $26 (ridiculous on it's own), but I told the driver I wasn't paying full price and left him a $20. Upset, I bothered again to give them another try. I ordered a buffalo chicken sub, with bacon and cheese, but all I got was a regular, plain chicken sub. When I came back to return it, they told me they charged me for a large sub and a pizza, for no reason whatsoever. I was refunded, but still PISSED. I didn't even want a sub that was made correctly, they completely lost my business. However... More recently, I called ahead to tell them I wanted two slices of cheese pizza. A fairly simple order, but they STILL managed to screw it up. They told me it would be ready in five minutes, so I showed up in ten. When I got there, they said it still wasn't ready, because they literally just put it in the oven. Despite what I had to say about them, I still went ahead and gave them business again for a single slice of pepperoni pizza. When I got in to get it, I stood in line (with nobody in front of me) watching the girl behind the counter mow down on some kind of sub, who tried talking to me asking what I wanted. I told her twice the same, stupidly simple pepperoni pizza slice order, but for whatever reason she could not remember for her life what I said. The cook in the back heard me, and once she finally swallowed her last bit I got my pizza. When I went back to work to chow down, I noticed a big pool of grill grime that my cheese had melted into, and a few lovely blotches of burned dough on the bottom. Needless to say I didn't eat it, and wasted yet again another couple of bucks at Engine House Salem. Don't waste your time here, they thrive on screwing up. read more

Problem 2: After he got off the phone, he told me she was unenthusiastic about hearing that we were willing to come pick it up. (Never thought picking up food that employees worked hard to put together could be a bad thing) Problem 3: When we went to go pick it up. My boyfriend purchased the food and got handed a pizza box and for a little while he stood around, so the girl asked "Did you order something else?" /Yes why else would he be standing there. Engine House has always been my favorite place to get a salad from. Fresh veggies, good dressing a homemade pita bread! But the last two times I've ordered have been a nightmare. The first mistake they made was sending a salad without dressing. I called, they said someone would come out with some dressing. I had to go out to a dance recital before it arrived but turns out it never came. My boyfriend was home all night. The next day, i called and they were super nice and credited me for the mix up. So we ordered again the next week. Well, our salads arrived without pita bread. I made a point to ask for dressing when I called and used the credit from the previous order. They did send out the pita bread but it was still pretty frustrating to have two mix ups! We probably will not be going back for awhile. read more

I have eaten in this restaurant two times. The first time I ate here I had pizza and it was fairly good. The restaurant is somewhat in disarray the benches need some help and the light globes are held together with tape. The second time we placed our order and waited at least 20 minutes before I went up to find out where our food was. The lady at the counter said, "you didn't get it yet?" About 5 minutes later then order came out and was incorrect. That required a redo. I had a dinner (chicken, broccoli and penne) that was recommended to me by the lady taking orders and it was canned products. Lousy sauce, frozen broccoli and watery noodles. Seriously I love Engine House. I love Engine House so much that after 23 hours of labor, 2 hours of sleep, and 9 hours of constant visitors... when the fiance asked what I wanted to eat the first words from my mouth were "the biggest pizza you can get from Engine House!" We used to come here when we first started dating 8 years ago. Back then you could still smoke inside of establishments. So you could order a pitcher of beer, a large pizza and have a smoke in between. So much fun. The pizza is awesome! It isn't the typical Greek-style pizza you will find at the local townie shops. It's real Italian-style pizza. Haven't tried anything else from there... I'm a bit obsessed with their pizza. read more

Although I usually trust the instincts of my fellow Yelpers, Engine House was recommended to me by someone I know, and being new to the area, I decided to check things out. I should have followed my gut. I wouldn't say this place is bad, I just didn't find anything outstanding about it. I don't mind that you order from the counter as soon as you arrive, but the menu is quite extensive so unless you know what you want right away, you awkwardly stand there while the counter folks stare at you. My husband and I just ordered simple pizzas and garlic bread. Although we knew the pizza would take about 25-30 minutes, we were willing to wait as we weren't completely starving. First came the garlic bread. I actually thought it was a joke. It was 2 long, slices that looked more like pickle spears than bread, and it tasted like I had taken some wonder bread and stuck it in the toaster. I wish I had taken a picture. The pizza wasn't bad, but the sauce was a little soupy and tasted a little too "herby". Again, I wouldn't say it was bad, but nothing jumped out and begged me to come back and make this place a regular spot. It was busy in there so obviously many people enjoy it, but with the variety of restaurants Salem offers, if I do come back I'll try something else. read more

This is strictly a pizza review for Engine House. The pizza is good but it's just a little to greasy. I also really wish they had jalapenos or a spicy sausage to add some kick to their pies. For some reason, grilled chicken is considered a specialty topping and costs an extra $2.50. Having said all that, the people are very friendly and the pizza is quite affordable. A large two-topping pizza is only $12.25. They are also really active in Salem, which is always great to see. I will definitely continue to support Engine House Pizza. read more

I have been a long time regular, the ride or die type. Always spending (generously) and tipping generously. I preface my commentary with this because it does matter, cheap patrons, non-tippers, or "tippers on the subtotal" can find another soapbox when commenting about the service they receive. If you are any of the above and received "ehh" service then know you get what you get and can't get upset, I have paid my way into the good graces of staff members (or at least I thought that I did). The last handful of times ordering delivery from the Engine House my order has not been complete, is missing condiments, has the wrong dressing, wrong components in the wrap, etc. I simply let it go and make a mental note to modify how I place the order and to be EXTRA specific...I want to be "nice" to fellow service workers. Lately, with the persistent errors and raging downward spiral of the food, I have ordered elsewhere. The fourth time must be the charm though because I learned to check the bag immediately. Upon doing so with this evening's order once again it was incomplete missing condiments (like ketchup for fries that I specifically asked for BECAUSE I DO NOT HAVE KETCHUP AT HOME). Right away, I call the store and am told "sorry the driver left for the night and I can't help you." Mind you, the driver is still in their car outside my window...I persist and find this egregious because I paid and did not get what I ordered. This call went back and forth (I was offered a "discount" which I don't want), quickly I realized this conversation is going nowhere. I ended up driving to Engine House, walking in with the meal, asking for my money back to which I was told that was not possible. I really don't care about the money, it was the principal and the total lack of service and attention that put me over the edge. The collegue was defensive, I was upset (but still cool, no Karen behavior here) and just left the meal on the counter. We were at an impasse, after all of the sub-par, incomplete, downright crappy meals, this incomplete order was the final straw. While everyone needs to manage their expectations, I mean really, I am ordering a wrap at a local pizza shop, the point is that service is what makes people come back, I will not "manage my expectation" on this point. In a time where businesses are closing left and right, the fight for each customer and to ensure they continue coming back needs to be the priority. Mistakes happen, I make them everyday in my service job, the difference is when presented with the mistake I have to own it and see it through ensuring that it is rectified completely to the guest's satisfaction. I live 5 blocks from Engine House and drove there in 3 minutes (now that I think about it, I don't know why I even ordered delivery), a manager needed to correct this mistake and see it through. In total it would have taken 10 minutes to bring the missing items to me and complete the order. This 1 star is a rating of the poor management, disorganization when preparing delivery items and inability to rectify mistakes made with orders. Get it together. read more

Solidly delicious pizza every time. I'm typically a pizza purist and prefer to eat a no-frills cheese pizza, but Engine House buffalo chicken pizza is hard to refuse. Greasy Italian style Pizza. Menu consists of classic Pizza place Fair. Lots of deep fried offerings, subs, salads Cold Tap Beer and of course Pizza. My family and I really liked the Pizza. It did seem to have a floppy crust that lends itself well to a fold and eat. Good stuff! No Gluten Free Pizza. There are GF options but by the looks of the kitchen i doubt it could be kept free of possible contamination. read more

I waver between here and Upper Crust depending on whether I want fancy thin crust (Upper Crust) or just good quality Italian pizza (Engine House). Slices are great if you're in a rush, Pizza is always good. Mozz sticks are just OK, Cheese steaks are yummy, as is Chicken Parm sub. I don't do delivery, just had too many bad experiences with too many places, but for takeout, Engine House is top notch. read more

This place is so tasty. The pizza has a wonderful just spiced right sauce and the cheese is savory and bubbly. The staff is super friendly and the price cannot be beat especially since the location sits in the center of where all the tourist trap places are. You can't get a better 10 dollar large pizza in the area. They also have scratch tickets and great weekday specials to save you some extra dough. I am not a big pizza fan...it takes a lot to impress me, and I have to say that the pizza at Engine House is VERY good. Crispy, flavorful crust with fresh and tasty toppings. The cheese was good quality and my peperoni wasn't greasy. The young folks working there weren't very friendly, but they got the job done. The place itself is kinda bland with lousy seating and they had 60 Minutes on the TV; not exactly great fare for a pizza joint, IMO. Engine House is favorite lunch spot in Salem. The pizza is served steaming hot and piled high with cheese. The sauce isn't too sweet and the crust is perfectly crunchy. We usually stick to the basics of sausage or pepperoni, but even their buffalo chicken is delicious with a side of bleu cheese dressing for dipping. The staff is pretty friendly and pizzas are made fresh to order. You can buy drinks (soda or beer) by the glass or the pitcher. If it's warm out, I suggest taking your pizza to go and having a picnic down by the water. Bring extra napkins! read more
