Negative stars... And yes Ive read all the reviews AND responses about enigma. Being there twice Ive gotten the same treatment. Unhelpful and rude. But I could tell when a regular walked in the vibe was completely different. As soon as I walked in they immediately ignored me and started talking with a separate party. Please keep in mind I'm a minor and a person of color, I came in for two piercings and got nothing. (Enigma states that %90 of staff including the owner is a person of color) So why am I being treated differently?? Treated with attitude and negativity. And coming from separate reviews, I know Im not the only one who has experienced this. I was having trouble filling out the paperwork and they were very unhelpful. As a previous customer, they already had my information in the files but didn't even bother to pull it up. I just found it weird that there were multiple employees including the manager standing there doing nothing. As a small business owner and service provider myself, I would never treat a new or existing customer like this. All in all, enigma needs to work on their customer service and professionalism. Treating someone differently because of their age or race is completely out of character. My 14 year old daughter and I came to Enigma today to get her lobes pierced after a horrific experience 4 years ago causing trauma and I got helix and conch piercings. This was her decision 100%. We set up our appt with Dan. He was amazing! I went first to show her it wasn't that bad. When it was her turn, she was apprehensive but kept saying I can do this. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with warmth and kindness. I had forgotten to bring a copy of my daughter's birth certificate, so we had to run home to grab it. The staff was incredibly understanding and assured us they could fit us in when we returned. When we came back, we were welcomed again with friendly smiles. After completing the paperwork, we were taken back by Rita, who would be doing the piercing. She was amazing -- calm, professional, and incredibly reassuring. I've had a few ear piercings at this location. Had a pair of earrings from them before, so i dropped it off ~45min before my appt for sterilization. Otherwise, you can (& must) buy their jewelry at the start of your appt in addition to completing an electronic consent form day of/ prior to appt. I came in yesterday for a second ear lobe piercing again, as it unfortunately closed and had a lovely experience with Rubi! She was very personable, friendly, and listened to my dissatisfaction with the original placement (due to anatomy). She walked me through each step, explaining exactly what she would be doing, and guiding in breath work before piercing which helped reduce anxiety. This is by far my best experience with a piercer here, so I would definitely recommend Rubi! This place was highly recommended to me by people to get my third piercings. Online, their piercing fee for two is $40 but the price of their earrings is no where to be found. I walked in and the guest piercer who was helping us was so, so friendly and helpful! Unfortunately, they had to ask a piercer who is from the shop (not so warm & friendly) for prices since they are not officially listed anywhere near the jewelry. They seemed very annoyed to be answering the question, and the vibes were off after. The second piercer let us know it would be $130 total with the cheapest jewelry. So I clarified that the cheapest jewelry is $90, to which they responded that it's more like $80. This gave me a weird feeling since the cheapest jewelry available was a tiny, stainless steel, cheap-looking ball. I am not opposed to paying $130 for two piercings, but the quality of metal for EIGHTY dollars was not doing it for me. Also, it seemed like the prices were being made up as people asked. This could very much not be the case, but I wish they had some sort of sheet with pricing, or that the prices were visible next to their jewelry options. I ended up not getting a piercing here and going to a different place that offers similar pricing, but with 14k gold or white gold jewelry. If you're looking to get both your ears pierced, be prepared to pay at least $130. read more

Before I start my very lengthy review, I would like to thank all the piercers and front end staff of Enigma, at both locations. Y'all are so awesome and I always am so happy to come in. I've always felt taken care of both while getting piercings and picking out jewelry, and I recommend Enigma to anyone who asks me about wanting a piercing. I've lived all over the US, and time and time again I come back to Enigma. I first visited Enigma in 2020, literally 22 days after I turned 18 because I'd been researching the best piercing studio in San Diego. I have been a body modification nerd since I was a preteen and knowing that every one of their piercers are APP affiliated, that they autoclave everything, only carry high quality jewelry, and keep the studio incredibly clean/organized was so incredibly stress relieving. I love that they are mainly appointment only and have an online booking form, it makes my life so much easier. It's also loved that during COVID, they were very strict on enforcing the masking policies and when they couldn't pierce, still helped the piercing community by selling jewelry outside occasionally. My first experience getting a piercing was amazing. My first piercing was my n-pples. I was nervous about getting them done due to getting SA'd in the past, so I chose to get pierced by Erika due to reviews and her portfolio on her Instagram. Erika listened to my concerns so sincerely, and we also connected on the idea that getting a body piercing can be a source of reclamation of your own body. She was so patient with me and walked me through every step of the way. Erika is also super fast and light-handed. Since that first experience with Erika, almost all but 1 of my 18 piercings have been done with her. Whenever I need to downsize my piercings, I don't have to worry about booking with Erika or anyone in specific because the whole piercing team is great. Lou, Rubi, Josh, and Evan are equally as caring and knowledgeable as Erika. (And Rubi is incredibly funny!) They all really want to help you get your dream piercing. Another thing I love about enigma is that their piercers are easily accessible via Instagram. Some places make you feel dumb for asking questions or are only available over the phone for help. Being able to dm them for help is very convenient. I got my conch pierced by Evan two days ago and today I went in with the hopes of switching my daith to a nicer piece. While I wasn't successful with the latter, I was extremely satisfied with my experience. Evan has incredible bedside manner. I feel the same way about Didier. As someone who works with children, I can confidently say that if your infant or young one wants to get pierced, they are your people because they put in the effort to ask questions and keep convo flowing to keep stress low. Overall, Enigma is amazing. Big thanks to Erika specifically who is a bad-ass piercer who's given me ears that I'm so happy about. Now, back in the day, my mom took me to Piercing Pagoda at Plaza Bonita (coincidentally where my sister worked at) when I was a month old or so. Kennedy at the Adam's Ave. location was kind and courteous to reschedule my daughter's appointment to meet with Didier who specialized in infant piercing. When we got to the Garnet location, we already knew we were going to enjoy the place. First off, the digs had wall art from Ethos One and the interior itself was bright and welcoming. Amanda was helpful in helping us pick out jewelry for our little one and getting us checked in. Didier went above and beyond our expectations. He was patient and very thorough in explaining the procedure, making my husband and I extremely comfortable throughout the whole process. Everything used on her was sterile and wrapped which put me at ease. He was also so patient and gentle with our little girl and even busted out the Miss Rachel voice post-procedure to calm her down. From the start, the woman at the front who checked me in and helped me pick out my jewelry was incredibly patient. She laid out various options based on my design tastes and budget. Their jewelry is priced based on the metal (titanium starting at ~$40, gold starting at ~$100) but you're paying for jewelry of guaranteed high quality. Evan was my piercer, and he did a phenomenal job. He was the epitome of a professional, making light conversation to help me feel comfortable, walking me through each step of the piercing process as it was being done, and checking in on how I was feeling. He thoroughly explained the aftercare process for healing, and when I told him I wouldn't be in SD in a few weeks to return for a potential downsize, he gave me recommendations of piercing shops in the Bay Area for me to go to instead. 1 star If I could give zero stars, I absolutely would. I came in for a simple appointment to downsize the backs of two ear piercings I got over two months ago. My appointment was at 4:30 PM on 5/2, but when I arrived, the place was locked. A few of us ended up waiting outside until about 4:35, when a brown-haired woman with a nose piercing finally let us in. She seemed completely overwhelmed while checking people in and barely glanced at my appointment details. When she finally got to me, I asked a few basic questions--like what the process entailed, what I was being charged for, and what to expect. Instead of answering professionally, she acted like I was annoying her for simply trying to understand a service I was paying for. She even made faces at other clients while I was talking--totally unprofessional. When I pointed to my ear to clarify what I meant, she snapped at me not to touch my piercing... on my body... which was fully healed from two months ago. At that point, I'd had enough and walked out. If you value respectful service and clear communication, I'd recommend going elsewhere. Front desk staff are the face of a business, and when they lack professionalism, it unfortunately reflects poorly on the entire operation. RE: Hi Evan, thank you for taking the time to respond. While I appreciate the offer to review footage, I'd like to clarify that my review was an honest reflection of my experience and perception as a paying client and I have since had services elsewhere. First, regarding the timing: I arrived promptly for my 4:18 PM appointment and parked across the street and the doors were NOT open until at 4:30 PM. There were most definitely others waiting outside with me--a man in a green shirt (who went in first), and what appeared to be a couple (a woman in a pink shirt with glasses and a man in all black). The man in black actually opened the door for me. I would encourage you to review your footage again if needed, as timestamps may not reflect the real-time customer experience. Second, while your staff may have thought they explained what the service involved, the interaction was curt and dismissive. I asked simple, reasonable questions about the service and was met with eye-rolling and impatience. There was clearly still misunderstanding between the front desk worker and I, If I continued to ask for clarification on the service and payment. Whether or not other clients were standing beside me (the girl in the pink shirt and the glasses who she kept looking at rolling her eyes and laughing to) the employee made inappropriate facial expressions and seemed visibly annoyed that I wanted clarity. That's not professional or welcoming. As for touching my piercing: I understand and respect health regulations. However, instead of calmly explaining this policy, I was snapped at while trying to explain to her further, the questions that hadn't been answered fully. Even though my piercing was well past the healing period, again, it was the tone and lack of respectful communication that caused me to leave, not at all the confusion over a form or policy. I had previously been there to be pierced, I filled out the form before, I had to current Information of the piercer, and I heard her instruct the other person (that wasn't there) to fill out the forms online, & that they are only good for 24 hours. Lastly, just a heads up: California is a two-party consent state when it comes to audio recording. If your studio records both video and audio of client interactions without clearly posted or verbal consent, that could be a serious privacy issue but completely understand why it would be necessary in a piercing studio. This feedback was meant to be taken seriously--not just as a "discrepancy" to be debated, but as a real customer experience where your front desk's approach missed the mark here. This was supposed to be a new experience for my son and I. My son and I are very close and have a loving relationship. My daughter set up the appointment. My son really wanted me to be there for his ear piercing. We had talked about it and he wanted black studs. When we got to The appointment Kennedy asked my son if he had an appointment. My son said "yes" there she looked at me and do you have an appointment? I told her I came in with my son. When she was asking my son what kind of earrings did he want, my son was nerves and she was showing him sparkling earrings. I pointed out the black studs. Kennedy became so Rude. She said to my son "You pick what ever you want, you choose not someone else. Then laughed a bit and shook her head, I couldn't believe how rude she was. He liked the black studs but thought they cost $40 but Kennedy told my son that size were $50 so I said "$50 is fine" Again Kennedy laughed and shook her head. I had to walk away and sat down. My son was surprised how the interaction was unfolding. We both sat down to wait for the person who was doing the piercing. Ruby came over for my son and took him to the piercing room. Rent gave 5 star service. It's so sad that Kennedy gave us such a bad experience. This piercing cost $130 so it was not an inexpensive service. I had to post how we were treated. I don't understand why Kennedy acted and treated me that way. I was dismissed and ignored by this young lady. She ruined this experience that we were so excited to have. Would NEVER recommend this place. Highly unprofessional. Came in the other day to ask for a 5/16 belly ring or something shorter. The worker told me 5/16 was the shortest. I ended up purchasing the one that he said was 5/16 but turns out it's way longer than the 5/16 I'm wearing. For a fact that belly ring was NOT 5/16. Please compare the photos. I came In again to have the belly ring measured that they incorrectly given me and the front desk used the ruler at the front and looked puzzled then goes back to show the piercer. The piercer Josh comes out and he measures it and whispers it is a bit long but yet they didn't want to show me directly the measurement because they knew they were incorrect from the beginning. The piercer Josh goes back inside then came out to argue with me and kept saying this is a 5/16 it'll fit did you even try it? I told him the person on the phone told me if it looks longer than my original piercing to bring it back just as long as it's not worn. He kept being rude telling me to go put the piercing in then we'll see what we can do. He couldn't explain why my original 5/16 was shorter than the the "5/16" they sold me. He tried to say the prong belly rings are measured differently I said how he said at the base of the bezel I'm like that literally just shows that if we measure from the bezel base it's actually longer he got flustered and was like you're not listening to me! He didn't want to show me the sizing proof and kept going on and on about putting the piercing in. I went back to my car and put the piercing in, it's definitely longer. It's a 3/8 not a 5/16. I came back and waited 30 mins for Josh. He was being a bit nicer after we both had calmed down. He agreed that indeed I was given a 5/16 and that that bar is longer and he said ok this is why it's important to always make an appt with a piercer, you're actually a 1/4 size. He puts in the belly ring and it feels EXACTLY like my 5/16. He didn't want to let down his "big ego" so bad and kept blaming me for not seeing a piercer first when in reality, his front desk gave me the wrong size and told me the wrong information that there was nothing shorter than 5/16. After that incident he was like you've probably been a 1/4 this whole time and the one you were wearing before was a 1/4 not 5/16. I said I'm sure it was a 5/16 it says on my invoice when I ordered online. Anyways because he was a lot calmer, I did end up tipping him and he made me trust him... it wasn't until... UPDATE: Fast forward to a few days, I went to my original piercer in PB, she measured that piercing that Josh put in and said it's a 5/16 not a 1/4. This whole time, we could've avoided a heated 30 minute argument in front of the other clients that walked in had he just shown me that the one I originally bought was a 3/8 and exchange it for a 5/16. He wanted to be right SO BAD. He even measured it but refused to show me. So what happened was, the front gave me a 3/8 when he was suppose to give me their shortest size. He told me shortest size is 5/16 I said ok then I'll take the 5/16. I ended up leaving with a 3/8 due to their mistake, came back just to argue only for the piercer to lie to me and make me think he put a 1/4 in when all along he had put a 5/16. The fact that he still lied even after this whole incident. Untrustworthy place. If the manager would like to call me I can give more details because this is so unacceptable! read more

Yes, you'll pay more for a piercing here than you might at a run-of-the-mill piercing place at the mall or at a random tattoo shop, but you get what you pay for. The selection and quality of the jewelry was good, and the piercers seemed knowledgeable. However, the largest factor for me was the cleanliness and preparation of the salon. It feels like everything is extremely professional and sanitary, and that puts my mind at ease for someone to poke a hole in my body. This was my second time at enigma (the first was probably 8 years ago!) and I got a helix piercing. I had no preference for the piercer and was assigned to Erika. She was very nice and explained everything very well. She was open to my feedback when I wanted to move it a few millimeters after seeing we her mark. The sanitation process for the jewelry and my skin was thorough and the piercing was quick and, while not quite painless, it was not the worst thing ever (I was expecting worse!). I only needed one earring (I got the most basic) which cost $40. I told Evan about the issues I was having with my piercing and he was very attentive and kind. He took out my old one, cleaned my wound, and replaced with a gentler earring. He talked through my after care patiently and it made me feel a lot more at ease! I'm so glad I came to Enigma! Can't wait until I'm healed enough for my next set! I have been to enigma twice now to troubleshoot my daith piercing which hasn't been healing for 10 months. I saw Evan, who's certified with the Association of Professional Piercers, which is above and beyond many other studios. He's been really knowledgeable and given me a few options to consider during my issues. I didn't feel rushed or pressured. Sadly I had my daith piercing removed yesterday, but will return to see Evan when I'm healed and ready to try again. I did have him pierce the second holes on my earlobes while I was there. He uses sterile drapes, gave detailed aftercare advice and did a good job on placement of the piercing. The shop was absolutely spotless and I love walking into a room and see the autoclave in operation getting everything ready. The woman at the front counter was really friendly and the other piercer working seemed nice too. I got my nose pierced at the PB location several years ago and had an amazing experience -- my piercer was so friendly, reassured me about the process, and it's my favorite piercing to this day. A few months ago, I snagged it on something, and came to the North Park location for help reinserting. It was so quick and everyone that helped me was so kind! Fast forward to today, I just got my ears pierced -- I picked Evan as my piercer and he could simply not be more professional, kind, and friendly. I'm a big germaphobe, but Evan was so meticulous with sanitation that I had not a worry in the world. Will never go anywhere else for a piercing other than Enigma! This review is for the jewelry up sell experience. My piecer was good. I came to get piercings on my helix, targus and conch. I wanted the butterfly for my helix ($120). The girl at the counter looked at my ear and said it would fit. I chose much smaller piercings for my targus and conch. The during the piercing process, the piecer told me the butterfly was too big for my helix and he was placing it on my conch. It was too big for my conch, too abs looked stupid. He said it was used so I had to purchase additional jewelry if I wanted to switch. This is completely absurd. I would have chosen all small jewelry had I been told during the stage of picking out my jewelry. $308 later, I'm stuck with ackward jewelry. read more

Wanted to get a new piercing and after some research found this awesome place! First impression, the shop was super clean and I was greeted right away at the front. The girl who helped me get signed in and pick out jewelry was super friendly and very helpful. My piercer Josh did incredible! It's unfortunate because one girl (who this was my first time seeing), was really sweet while the other has always put a bad taste in my mouth. Whatever, I always expect that when I come to this location and try to look past it. I went in for a jewelry change and was assigned Erika. She was so beyond rude to me that I was inclined to write this review, as well as almost walk out before my service had begun. No greeting, no smile, no response after I complimented her hairstyle. Just a rigid "what piercings am I removing today?" I responded, "my ear piercings." She responds, "you're gonna have to be more specific than that." I have ten piercings in my ears. Sorry I don't know all of the technical terms??? She made me feel like garbage because I couldn't specifically name them? Isn't that your job? She was so incredibly rude with her attitude and tone of voice that I stopped talking and almost got up from the table to leave. I wanted to get out of there as fast as possible with the way she made me feel. She was extremely condescending and it was so awkward. I am in the service industry myself and have never treated a customer or anyone for that matter with such disrespect when they are PAYING for a SERVICE. I always over tip and am always friendly but this literally ruined my entire afternoon. It's unfortunate because I love this place, but will no longer come after today's horrible experience. I am confused as to how Erika is still employed here because most of the one star reviews blatantly mention her name. As a fellow small business owner, I would get rid of her just due to the sheer amount of bad reviews she has collected over the years. :( read more

I cannot recommend Lou enough for your next piercing. I went in yesterday for lower back dermal anchors. He had such a calming, warm energy that instantly calmed my nerves. He walked me through every step of the process, let me take my time to look at my marking and make sure I was happy with the placement, and overall had great attention to detail. He's such a cool yet professional guy and I would totally go to him for my next piercing. I booked an appointment and was greeted promptly. Evan confirmed my plans and helped me select the proper earrings for my new piercings. He carefully sterilized everything and was oh so professional while being communicative and keeping me relaxed. His attention to detail in ensuring they aligned properly was insanely wonderful. I've gotten all my piercings here. Helix, rook, tragus. This is great place to get any piercings done. I've had 3 different guys do my piercings and they all were awesome and professional. The young women in the front was great as well I didn't get her name but she was great at helping me pick out my jewelry. Prices are pretty good. Stick with the titanium jewelry if you want more affordable prices. I went for the gold and it tends to be more pricy. But overall all the jewelry is gorgeous! I took my daughter to Enigma when she was in high school because of the stringent procedures they use for preventing discomfort and infection. After 15 years or so, I asked my daughter to take me to Enigma to have a third piercing done in both of my ears for the same reason. We asked for Evan Spencer since he as done most of my daughter's piercings and she strongly suggested we book with him. I was very impressed with how professional Evan was and the precautions he took for keeping me comfortable and the environment clean and sanitary during my procedure. It felt very much like a medical setting, with the exception that Evan was much more personable and reassuring than most people I've encountered in clinics. I love getting pierced here, I've been coming to this location and the PB location for 10 years now, and Evan is 100% the most phenomenal piercer. With that being said, I almost always find the front counter people so offputting. I would come in here way more often if they weren't so snarky or antisocial. The girl in the orange sweater was pretty chill- but Kennedy, who helped my mom after her conch piercing today, had SUCH a HORRIBLE attitude. I also found it super weird that she talked in a completely different tone to another woman, but when speaking to me or my mom was super curt and had a completely different demeanor for no reason. Why is that??? People like her are just super frustrating and honestly make exciting experiences like a new piercing pretty crappy. Especially when there is no reason to be like that. It kinda hurts. And something for others to be aware of that not everyone will be treated the same. :( Aside from the front desk people, I still suggest Evan and this studio to anyone I know looking for a piercing cause he's amazing.
