Did we want to spend thousands having the sewer line we shared with our neighbors (a situation which had served well for 89 years) disconnected and a private line put in? Hell no! Nor did our neighbors. But the City of Portland has deemed that everybody needs a private line. The folks at EW discussed various ways of putting in our new line and decided that trenching across the basement floor, through the foundation and across the front yard would be least likely to compromise our home's foundation. An un-compromised foundation is good. Ryan patiently answered my husband's myriad of questions, over and over again, until he was able to wrap his head around the process. We cringed at the thought of the mess that would be created in the basement, but after the work was completed, the area was cleaned up and, frankly, looked better than before they arrived. They had to trench right where our fig tree stood, but kindly and gently dug it up and replanted it later. It lives! EW did the work in a timely manner and were responsive to our questions and concerns. Jose and Lorenzo were careful, conscientious and professional. They worked incredibly hard in weather that was in the 90's and 100's. Ryan returned after the work was completed to look things over to make sure all was in order and, again, explained various aspects to my husband. Was the process fun? We were so lucky that Joel from Environmental Works came to give us a bid at our house. He was the third bid in what seemed like a long search for the right company. We had Radon at levels above the EPA recommended levels, not knowing when we tested the vents were shut under the house (we just purchased it). The first guy never called us back after giving us a verbal bid and waiting still to see a contract. The second guy wanted to place a mitigation fan in the garage, but we have a bed room above the garage- so thats not up to code. so we waited for our appointment with Environmental works. While Joel was here working on the bid, I mentioned the vents being shut during the first test to him. He said we should test again to make because just by opening the vents that could solve the problem. And sure enough that was all we needed to do. It was amazing that he even said that to us. When I tested our basement area with a short-term test, the results came in around 6 pCi/L. This concerned me greatly since that particular area of the house was occupied. I called several abatement companies and received a few quotes and selected EW based on Yelp reviews, pricing, and warranty. The installers did the work in one day and had the ventilation unit purring quietly, completely contained on the outside of the house with nothing inside other than an electrical connection. All communication with the staff was concise, timely, and professional. We performed a 4 month long-term radon test after installation and the results came back as less than 0.4 pCi/L so I'd call that a success! Originally, I was concerned about noise or some bulky fan inside the house but neither were true. In fact, the fan is outside and extremely quiet. Choose EW, you won't be disappointed. read more

I had Mark over to give an estimate on two small apartment complexes ( 5 and 6 units) that I thought needed radon abatement. I was extremely impressed because he told me what was in my best interest, not in the best interest of the company's bottom line. Unlike another company who had been over, he told me (1) that adding floor insulation would not reduce the radon numbers and (2) that removing the styrofoam off the foundation vents would very likely be all that needs to be done. We could remove them, retest and most likely both places would have the radon numbers drop enough so abatement wouldn't be needed. I wish I'd had this company do the testing because I suspect they would have told me to remove the the covers prior to testing and saved me a lot of trouble. If I ever need any of work done that this company does, I will be calling them. read more

We contacted several mitigation companies after we found out we had a radon problem. Environmental works got right back to us, came out to the house for an inspection and thoroughly explained our options. Their estimate was inline with those of other companies and we liked their follow-through.They were able to match the mitigation solution to our particular house, which is a little quirky. The work was done quickly and professionally. The fan is quiet and visual impact is pretty minimal. After they were done, and now, nine months later, our radon levels are still essentially zero.
