Heshy is incredible! I have been organizing events for the last 10 years and I have used my fair share of caterers-- some good, some bad, some pretty disgusting. I had an event recently that I had to use a Kosher caterer-- which to me immediately screams overpriced and under seasoned-- that's just what we seem to have here in the Bay Area. BUT I WAS SO WRONG! Heshy was beyond easy to work with. I asked him for a sample menu (the "chef's choice) and I am so happy I chose that. Heshy and his team did a beautiful job catering a dairy-pareve gala event for us this spring. The food was delicious and the signature cocktails caused a crush at the bar. Highly recommend the mini grilled cheese bites and he did a fantastic chilled minted pea soup shooter. Heshy did a fantastic job for our kids bar/bat mitzvah luncheon. We had over 300 people in attendance and we were worried that there would be a mob trying to get to the food but Heshy thoughtfully set up the room in a way to create an easy flow and no long lines. His food too was amazing. We had a vision and Heshy helped expand on it. He was really willing to work with us to incorporate important elements into our meal . Several guests and members at our synagogue even came up to us afterwards and said this was the best kiddush luncheon they have ever been to. I just wanted to send compliments to Chef Hesh! I ordered from Hesh on a very short notice (1 week's notice) for a Company Holiday Luncheon (buffet style) for 28 people with vegetarian eaters. My non-vegetarian coworkers loved the braised chicken! His chicken was very tender, juicy, and cooked to perfection. The chicken was all gone by the end of the day, as well as, the saffron rice. My vegetarian coworkers thought the spread was tasty too (which are also bonus points). I heard compliments on the roasted sweet potatoes (a coworker took some home) and another loved the roasted squash with romesco sauce (so much that he would like to recreate this dish for his family Christmas party). I had several coworkers going back for seconds. I really enjoyed the rosemary cake as dessert. Also, the pita bread was so delicious I could have eaten the entire bowl! No one at my company is vegan, but I personally enjoy vegan foods. I will occasionally cook vegan food at home, so I thought that was awesome that all the dishes (besides the chicken of course) was vegan. I have attended several events catered by Heshy, most recently a supper pop-up in Berkeley, CA. As always, it was a wonderful experience - delicious food, beautiful plating, and great service. As a meat-focused event, all the various meats served were wonderfully cooked and creatively presented, and perfectly seasoned - from gnocchi with duck to the delicately fried chicken rounds to the pastrami and steak. My favorite food items he served were beef bacon wrapped dates, yam fritters, and the chicken legs/thighs braised with lemons, olives, rosemary. The chicken was cooked to perfection! - Heshy prepared a plate of the tish food and sparkling for us in our yichud room. Pre-planned, but so thoughtful (and delicious), am i right?!?! - Nice surprise: juices at the bar via beverage dispenser. While it is true that there are not that many options for kosher caterers in the area, Epic Bites would stand out, regardless of the number of rivals. Heshy makes delicious food, period. I've used him for social and business events, and I've been to his pop-ups several times. It's all legit. Grilled cheese bar? Sure! Stuffed roasted chicken with half a dozen side salads? No problem. Barbecue and fried chicken? Absolutely, and throw some beef "bacon" into the corn salad on the side, just for fun. Recently had two separate meals cooked by this team: Veal, and a bunch of salads and sandwiches. Very tasty on both counts. I really liked a tuna, bean arugala salad they made with a yummy dijon vinagrette. My 9-year-old daughter loved a Greek salad they made. My 6-year-old who doesn't like to try anything new, begged for more veal. Here's a little bit that I learned about these kosher caterers, after talking to them: The company was co-founded in August 2011 by Eitan Esan, 26, originally from Rochester, NY, and Yitzchok Bernstein, 27, who grew up in Rocklin. The two friends, who met at Congregation Beth Jacobin Oakland where they both attend and now cook out of, offer an array of dishes, from Indian to French, from Italian to Chinese. Their niche is providing custom-made menus for any occasion. And they are supervised in the Orthodox kosher kitchen of Rabbi Dardik. "We have no real specialty," Yitzchok said. We just had Epic Bites cater a baby naming for us in our home. With over 100 people, Epic Bites fed us all an amazing brunch and everyone was impressed by the quality of the food and the variety. They created a unique menu for our event, were responsive in the weeks leading up to it, and arrived promptly to set up. Some favorites: Apple pancakes with sour cream (a fresh interpretation of potato latkes), cheddar and scallion biscuits with mushroom gravy, and a veggie frittata. We've used Epic Bites Catering for two events now, both staged in our home, buffet style (i.e. no service in our case, though they can do this). First event was a more formalized/ scripted affair centered around an Asian cuisine theme. A very diverse and hard-to-please crowd (including restaurant owners, btw). Everything was perfect and the guests were literally clamoring for more/ complimenting the food the entire evening. I actually witnessed the restaurant owners pressing for (and getting) EBC's soy & chili glazed beef short rib recipe...so took that as a pretty good sign. Our 2nd event was a more casual party for a couple dozen friends- incl. 10 teenage kids known for consuming quantities of food defying the laws of physics. For this EBC suggested a pizza party. Perfect! But this was not your typical pizza... Gourmet cheeses, olive oil marinated wild mushrooms, all fresh herbs, their own home-made/ freshly baked breads and pizza dough with the pies baked on site on big honkin' stones and continuously brought out all night... Throw in all the salads, sides and freshly-made desserts... everyone including the teenagers were beyond elated and satiated, which also says a lot. Over the course of these 2 events EBC have arrived promptly, have performed a superlative and hugely generous job in terms of both quality and quantity and have cleaned up after themselves rather nobly in the aftermath.
