Pistachio cake (at a birthday party)

Maaan. I haven't been to Epicure Cafe in a long minute. But my dad's recent birthday inspired me to re-order one of his favorite cakes. Dunno why I haven't made this an annual order, but the pistachio cake still-as the kids say-slaps. It's light, not too sweet, and has a lot of pistachio and pistachio flavor. Goes GREAT with coffee and tea. I do think the cake layers were a bit too thin; which can be overpowered by the icing. Perhaps it was our batch but I don't remember the cake layers being so thin and sparse.

As of this review, Epicure Café has been around for roughly 35 years, and I only noticed it upon a recent visit to the nearby River Oaks Theatre. This place is wonderful and worth visiting. I tried a burger and fries on my first visit, and I'll definitely return for their tempting pastries. The space was comfortable, and the service was excellent. Five stars across the board for a local gem.

Needs improvement. Tables outside stacked with trash (3). People were waiting to sit down. Us too so I had to bring 2 dirty plates inside because I don't have patience to stand around. The food was average. Acapulco omelette and western. Coffee was inconsistent. Forgot part of my order. What a mess. We will keep driving past this place and try somewhere else.

The Princess Torte was good! I've been trying to find a place around Houston that has it!

Decided to stop here yesterday after being in the area. I was on the search for breakfast food and the lady at the counter let me know they still had breakfast at 2 pm (score!) I ordered the turkey croissant which came with scrambled eggs and spinach. It was delicious! The portion was super generous and also came with half of a banana on the side. It was truly an amazing sandwich! After seeing all of the pastries, I could not leave without getting a couple. I ended up ordering a cheese danish and a fruit tart to go. Both pastries were amazing! They really know what they are doing here. It was my first time having a legit cheese danish (one not from starbucks) and I feel like it changed my life. No joke LOL. Taking one star off because the young lady at the register was visibly annoyed the entire time I was ordering... Not sure why but as a first time customer this was enough to make me not want to come back.

I had the Tiramsu. And it was divine. I missed the lady fingers but the cake was a hit when i tasted it. Just the perfect amount of coffee taste. The service was timely and the cafe was very inviting with its look and people.

I loved my croissant and was delighted that it didn't fall apart. Our coffees were yummy as well.

One of my favorite desserts place in town. Especially the pistachio cakes. Every time we are here for coffee:tea and cake I ordered the pistachio one. Sometimes we also ordered the whole cake for birthday. So yummy. Haven't come back since the pandemic and it's still good as always. Today we ordered the pistachio cake for a coworker birthday and Epicure didn't let us down.

My drink was alright, and didn't stand out from any other coffee shops I've tried (it was the West End latte). What was unique about the drink was its alcohol content, but fortunately, it wasn't a prominent taste; nonetheless, it felt a bit gimmicky and didn't add much. One thing I GOTTA rave about is that this is a four-story coffee shop, with a patio with a gorgeous view at the very top! You don't see that often in Houston. My friend and I still struggled to find seating... but honestly, Coffee House's use of space makes up for it. I don't think I'd return for the drinks, but they definitely did a great job of creating such a cozy work environment. :)

I understand that frustrations can happen, especially if people occasionally take advantage, but this was a Monday morning and it was not busy. I ordered my drink, and the barista made it. I walked to my car and then realized the drink was made incorrectly. So I walked back in and approached the gentleman at the counter, kindly asking if they could remake it. After a minute, the barista approached me and said, "Hey, I did what you asked." I replied that I had asked for no ice since the drink was for later I have about an hour commute and I apologized for the misunderstanding. Mid-sentence, she grabbed the drink from my hand, dumped it out, and walked away without saying anything. I even told the guy at the counter, "Man, I think I pissed her off..." They eventually remade the drink, but unfortunately, it was still incorrect. She didn't acknowledge me afterward, which is fine... I didn't need that, but I've worked in customer service long enough to recognize signs of frustration and passive behavior. I know Lala Land puts a lot of effort into creating a positive environment, which made this experience more disappointing. Overall, the product is good, but unfortunately, the service was not. Maybe next time will be better.

My beloved Boomtown RIP…read more This pains me to write. Different is certainly not always better, especially when what you had was already working. I much prefer the saying if it ain't broke don't fix it. To the people who bought this place, I know your motto is "different is better," but please stop taking that so literally. You do not have to change every aspect of this place to make it different. The best thing about getting your everyday local coffee is seeing the same baristas you've seen over and over again, familiar faces who know you by name. This was one of those places where I'd hate to admit how much money I've spent here, and I did it happily. In just three weeks, our beloved spot, one I would willingly drive out of my way for, has gone so far downhill that I barely recognize it. From the eyesore taco warmer that practically knocks you in the face while you're ordering, replacing a space that once showcased lovely things like fresh flowers and local trinkets, to the disappearance of the wonderful local treats from Sinfull Bakery that kids genuinely enjoyed. At first I thought maybe you were just out, but after three weeks it became clear that expenses were being cut across the board and those items may never come back. And where do I even begin. The new oat milk is terrible. It completely changes the look and taste of the coffee and is immediately noticeable. I won't harp on the change of hours or the change in flavor of your coffee beans, but I feel it must be mentioned because, well, it's noticeable. And now the cleanliness. Spilled taco sauce all over the floor, and when your kid points it out, you know you're in trouble at that point. Dishes piled so high they're overflowing, dirty restrooms. And to be clear, this isn't the staff's fault, there is simply not enough staff to keep up with these things. Never ever in seven years of being a frequent visitor has it been this bad. I also noticed the new coffee packaging, and it's just another reminder that the heart and thoughtfulness that once defined this place are gone. At this rate I half expect robots handing me my latte in a few weeks so you can save a few more bucks. And getting rid of Toast. Even if Toast was an expensive platform to use, it was legitimately so convenient. And dang, if you're going to do away with it, don't replace it with the worst possible ordering system ever, one that doesn't even work. Do you know how many orders I wouldn't have placed if it weren't for Toast? Toast made those orders possible when I didn't have time to wait. Without it, I simply wouldn't have ordered. I understand times are tough for many businesses, but you all were booming. The new online ordering system doesn't work. You may as well do away with it altogether because this one just isn't it. Honestly, I am devastated. You knocked it out of the park in every area, cleanliness, service, food. I never had a single bad item on the menu. The coffee was beyond. When my family moved out of the city a year and a half ago, I still drove 35 minutes one way just to get your food and coffee, over an hour round trip again and again. I don't think you understand how this new direction has driven this place into the ground in a matter of three weeks. Sadly all good things must come to an end.
