I was going to get a full service, but the front desk insisted I get enough to match the balayage inquiry. I couldn't get a word in. No way would I trust my hair with someone who won't listen. So I left. And they charged my card $400. Vibes 0/10, customer service 0/10, skill level unknown.

What I Booked: I'm new to Chicago and found Gold Coast Salon through Google, where they're listed as a "relaxed salon" with quality work. Their website clearly advertised full babylights starting at $190+. I booked an appointment with Ashlee on 5/15 and paid a $95 deposit. She immediately requested photos of my current hair and my desired results, which I provided (see attached photos). What Happened: I arrived early to my appointment on 5/29. After examining my hair, Ashlee quoted me $680-$700 for the service without blow dry or cut. This was over 3.5 times the advertised price. I understood the "$190+" meant the price could vary, but in what world does a jump to $700 make sense? That's not a reasonable variation, it's egregious and deceptive. I came prepared for the price to be higher than the base rate, but this kind of markup is completely unreasonable for babylights on already blonde, shoulder-length fine hair. When I expressed that my budget was $300-$400, she offered to "see what she could make work." She returned with a scaled-down option: face-framing highlights and a few babylights for around $390. During this back-and-forth, she claimed the high price was due to this being a "full color correction." Look at my photos. I'm already blonde. This is clearly not a color correction situation. When I pushed back on the pricing, Ashlee condescendingly told me that this cost might not be in my "beauty budget" but it is in a lot of her other clients' budgets. This comment was not only rude and dismissive, but completely missed the point: this isn't about affordability, it's about being misled by advertised pricing. The Unacceptable Resolution: Realizing I couldn't trust her judgment or spend hours in this uncomfortable situation, I requested to simply use my $95 deposit toward a trim and leave. She refused, insisting I could only receive the service I originally booked or be charged the full amount. I left without services and with my deposit held hostage. The Issue: This is textbook bait-and-switch advertising. Advertising services at $190+ and then quoting nearly $700 in person with no transparency about pricing factors beforehand is deceptive and potentially illegal. Their own booking policy states deposits "will be applied towards your services," yet they refused to honor this for an alternative service despite their egregious pricing discrepancy. I am pursuing this matter through my credit card company and appropriate consumer protection channels. Do not book here if you value transparent pricing and honest business practices.

I have been going to Epoch for years and continued to be thrilled with the results. I have naturally curly brown hair that I keep straight and blond. Earlier this week, I got a Brazilian Blowout/Kertatin straightening and a partial highlight. (Decided to grow it a bit so not cut, but got an amazing stylish bob earlier this year.) Straightening - my hair is smooth and silky and straight, but will still hold a curl if I want it to. Even better - it was ready to go the minute I left the salon - no more waiting for days to be able to get it wet or put a pony tail holder in it. Color - I've primarily gone to Beth but seen several other stylists over the years too. I appreciate the feedback and advice to keep my hair both current and in-season. We recently switched from balyage back to foils with a root smudge. No nineties highlight line - good growth. I easily made it 12 weeks before wanting a touch up. I love my color. Also, the team at Epoch is working so hard to make sure safety protocols are in place - incredibly clean and safe atmosphere, wonderful communication. read more

I am so thrilled with how my hair turned out after recently seeing Annie. I initially went for just a haircut. I loved how she listened to my concerns and also gave me some practical tips on how to style my hair using different techniques that would help prevent it from more damage. I loved the cut so much that I decided to go back for a full balayage. My hair already had a poorly done balayage in it from a previous salon. It lacked blend and needed some serious toning. Annie was able to work with my hair as it was and transformed it in to a beautiful, more sombre look - perfect as fall is just around the corner. I'm so happy with my experience here today. It was extra snowy and I was in the mood for a change so I decided I wanted to get my haircut, bangs and all. They were able to fit me in within the hour and I explained how I was a poor college student and wanted to treat myself to a nice cut, and save money by box-dying. Saying 'box dye' in a hair salon is similar to saying 'Voldemort', aka he who should not be named. My stylist, Beth, was understanding of my situation and helped workout the best move for me. I left with a whole new look that gave me hope in salons again. After many failed attempts at getting my hair cut and colored from salons I researched myself, this experience restored my faith. Leslie Hoffman at Epoch Studio Salon provided bridal hair services for my mom, mother-in-law, and me for my wedding. While Epoch was a little difficult to coordinate with to confirm the booking, I couldn't have been happier with Leslie. She worked with me to give me exactly what I was looking for, which was a soft, side-swept look that looked soft and natural but held up all night despite the 95 degree heat. I cannot say enough positive things about Epoch Studio. The atmosphere is charming with a very unique set up. The salon even has a photo booth to document your new hair do! Annie has been my stylist for 5+ years, and I love what she does with my hair. My hair is very thick, and many of the stylists I've worked with over the years didn't know how to properly cut my hair to make it more manageable. I was also told that Tara's specific cancellation policy would be added to the website, but it still hasn't been. Posting this so others are aware, because there's no reasonable way to know cancellation policies vary by stylist if that information isn't clearly disclosed upfront.

Elizabeth hadn't seen my hair in person or in pictures and refused to work with me because they stated that it wouldn't be "a good fit" very confusing messages and was not even able to even get an in person consultation! To add, it took over a week for a response and after my last attempt to schedule a simple haircut/trim, I was declined for the reason of "not a good fit" I would like to talk to the owner/manager about this issue as I appald by this response. Also "color correction" was assumed and stated in the text response - stylist never saw my hair in person or viewed photos. How can that assumption be made ? Also, I (as many women are) willing to invest the time to try out different stylists /engage in consultations until the right fit is found- the statement of "wasting my time with a consultation" is absurd. In addition, and I quote from Elizabeth's first text " Yes, I ABSOLUTELY work with clients who have resistant gray, and I'd be happy to help you with your root touch-up. " How would then their comfort/expertise level with resistant gray CHANGE after a follow up text message? I question the reasons for why my request for a consult/trim was denied. I found this stylist and salon very unprofessional.

But I had a great experience with Jamie. It was a consultation and haircut as my hair is incredibly damaged from chemical straightening at a different salon and I needed to find someone who could help. She gave me good advice and a haircut that removed more of the damage and it still looks good. My hair is going to be difficult and I'm happy that I found Jamie because I'm feeling hopeful. Plus everyone is really nice which helped me feel better.
