This place is the very definition of a tourist trap. I never would've chosen to eat here but we were traveling with an older person who really needed to get off her feet and get some food in her belly. There were so many warning signs that it was against my better judgment to eat here. I'm going to share them with you so you don't make the same mistake. Clue #1: The waiters stand outside hawking at passerby at an attempt to get them in the door. They'll say how great the food is (lie) and they'll offer you a free glass of prosecco and limoncello and free focaccia to appeal to your bargain side. Whenever a restaurant resorts to drumming up business off the street, just keep walking. Clue #2: The menu is in English and is professionally printed, meaning the ingredients aren't going to be what's in season or fresh (always look for handwritten menus in Italian for the best food in town). This is never, ever a good sign in Rome. There are some exceptions, but when a place caters to foreign tourists, it means they don't care about repeat business. Clue #3: The place was packed with English speaking tourists, not locals. As expected, the food was bad. It wasn't inedible, but it certainly wasn't good, especially for the prices we paid. We ordered a bottle of house wine ($12 and acceptable), a prosciutto and mozzarella appetizer (this was the only good thing about the meal), a side of disgusting and overpriced mushrooms, cheese ravioli (good enough, but how can you mess up ravioli?), a truly mediocre steak, a side of spinach which tasted and looked frozen, and a seafood pasta that had well prepared seafood but tasted like nothing more than a plate of salt. There was a pot of grated parmesan cheese on the table as well as a bottle of crappy olive oil (this is Italy, where's the good stuff)?!? I also took great issue with the fact that we had to pay $2 for tap water. It's one of those places where you'll leave angry because of the disparity in the price versus the food quality. What really made me angry is the SCAM that the waiters try to pull on unsuspecting tourists. The service charge is included here, so DO NOT fall for the "your bill doesn't include a tip" scam. They like to pull that on tourists! A service charge is clearly listed on the menu and eagerly charged, but our waiter rudely and loudly reminded us that our bill "didn't include a tip." They try to pull that crap on tourists so stay strong. We didn't tip one cent. By the way, tipping isn't a thing in Italy anyway! If you eat the bread, expect to pay -- but they won't take no for an answer so just eat it. PLEASE avoid this restaurant. You may only get to visit Rome once in your lifetime and your money, time and vacation memories are better spent at many of the far better dining establishments in this gorgeous city. read more

I stopped in to eat at this spot as I was walking by because the prices were not outrageous. They were reasonable. Had the garlic bread appetizer and was a bit disappointed. It looked like a piece of bread from a loaf with olive oil on top and some garlic seasoning. It was also cut in half. Regardless it tastes good. The quantity was not enough for more than one person. I overall liked this restaurant, even if I almost turned my heels when I saw the word 'alfredo' on the menu outside, sending up a a huge red flag of 'tourist trap' my way.. but I must say I was wrong, and it turned out ok. Service was polite but I wouldn't call it friendly. Ambience nothing special. Spaghetti alla gricia was tasty: it could have been outstanding if cooked al dente. Lamb was good, artichokes were just phenomenal and strongly recommend those. This place is fantastic! The staff there are fabulous and friendly. Half the fun is watching them talk to folks about sitting down. We went there on our first night and went back all three nights we were there for either a snack or a bottle of wine. The staff and people watching is worth a visit in itself, but the food was great! The caprese salad is a must and the bread melts in your mouth! Not to mention it was by far the best service we got at any of the restaurants we went to on the trip. We were convinced by the workers outside to come eat and we did. We sat down and quickly realized that the table next to us had a TON of what looked like nats/fruit flies. Stopped in after a trip to the Pantheon and was impressed by the soft and casual Italian flair, very inviting and quiet. I had a mushroom and prosciutto pizza, beer and I mineral water. The pizza crust was soft, chewy with sweet sauce, the mushrooms were fresh and the prosciutto was perfection. Post dinner coffee was delicious. Wait was staff friendly and attentive. Good prices. It's right in a high traffic pedestrian zone full of tourists. The sort of place I try to avoid at all costs. 'Sales men' stand outside each restaurant trying to convince the tourists their restaurant is the best. This one told us his 'mama' was in the kitchen. The cover charge wasn't bad for Rome, and if the meal had been good, the prices would have been great. It was one of the least expensive meals we've had in Italy. This place is my new favorite restaurant. The food here is simply amazing. The pizza is some of the best we've ever had, and the best part was the service. Our waiter, Omar, was out of this world. My son loved the food, and the service so much that we had to come back again. Omar fed my son even though my son is 13 and more than capable of feeding himself. He fed my son and then wiped his mouth with a napkin. (As a joke.) After our meal Omar gave my son some apple juice and said it was Jack Daniel's. My son proceeded to take the shot and pretend it was Jack Daniel's- they had me fooled!. His comedy and service is something you never see. The great thing about Rome (not to imply that it's the only great thing, because there are MANY great things about Rome) is finding the hidden gems amongst the maze of streets. There is no grid system or other familiar modern city planning layouts to this ancient place, so trying to find any specific store or restaurant in downtown is a pretty hard task for visitors. Luckily for us we stumbled upon Er Faciolaro while lost in our last night wandering the streets of Roma. My wife has seem to have a great radar for randomly picking restaurants abroad, and truth be told if we saw this on Yelp (with only 4 reviews to its name at the time) we probably would not have ate at this restaurant. Most restaurants on this street, and most of Rome in general, have a similar atmosphere and layout so the differences really lies in the food and the service. This place stands out in both aspects. The hostess 'working' the streets seemed to pull everyone in that she talked to, and our waiter was probably the best waiter we've had during our entire 2 week trip to Europe (which included 3 other countries besides Italy.) In fact, I think he was the only one to ever ask us how our food was. To make a comparison, we looked at a menu for a nearby restaurant, and when we decided to see what the other restaurants had to offer the waiter playfully mocked us by pointing out $5 lasagna down the street. I didn't have the time to tell him it was his lackluster food options and horrible attitude that steered me away, and not the prices. The special for the night was a homemade Fettuccini with fresh mushrooms and shaved truffles, all in a truffle sauce. It was honestly one of the best pastas I've had in my life, if not one of the best meals! I paired it with their roast lamb and potatoes which were also amazing, I've uploaded pics of these 2 dishes for your drooling pleasure. The atmosphere for the evening was also perfect, relaxing, romantic, flavorful. You really can't go wrong with choosing this restaurant for food and for memories, even the street musicians seemed to only flock in front of Er Faciolaro, besides there being at least 3 other ones on this same strip. I haven't been to many restaurants in Rome but this was by far my favorite one, and hopefully you will feel so too - or at least accidentally discover so for yourself without seeing this review first. read more

Yum! Came here while on holiday with my friend and it was so good. I ordered a pizza with mushrooms and prosciutto and my friend ordered spaghetti carbonara. The pasta was crazy delicious! The pancetta wasn't overly salty (like it tends to be in the U.S.) and the pasta was perfectly al dente. The pizza crust was so thin and crisp but chewy and I thought the prosciutto was sliced perfectly thin. We shared a small bowl of tiramisu for dessert and it was so yummy. While walking past, the I spotted the menu outside and the manager promised me the best dinner and a glass of Prosecco. I returned to my room to get ready for dinner and returned a short time later. The manager recognized me and welcomed me in. The Prosecco was a lure but that's ok. Everyone gets Prosecco! The appetizers and large beer were awesome. The lasagna first course was absolutely amazing. Nothing but stellar service. Then my steak arrived which I ordered medium well. The steak came half medium rare and half rare. I ate what I could cut and hesitantly returned the rest (3/4) to the kitchen. The same steak arrived a short time later from raw to medium rare. I explained to the waiter that I wasn't happy and he stated that a medium rare steak is raw in the middle. I agreed but had to remind him that I ordered a medium-well done steak. He had no apology or remedy. I never saw him for the rest of the night. Someone else waited on me and brought me my check. Could have been easily a 5-star restaurant. 3.5 stars for lackluster customer service. I wish the manager would have lived up to his promise. I think they don't care because tourists will probably never return anyways. Choose this place carefully. read more

The staff were very attentive but allowed you to dine and enjoy your meal at a leisurely pace. The waitstaff quickly greeted us with a prosecco aperitivo. We ordered two starters: caprese and prosciutto e melone and then shared a pizza for lunch. The caprese was super fresh but the prosciutto was cut rather thick and didn't pair well with the melon. The pizza was thin and crispy and a generous size. They rounded out the meal with a complimentary pour of limoncello. We went here for dinner on our last night, as it was very close to the Pantheon. We were greeted to a warm welcome and champagne before sitting down. We were given delicious hearty bread (freshly made), and some of the best olive oil I've ever tasted. The olive oil had a light green tint and tasted exceptionally fruity. We enjoyed the mixed grill, which consisted of steak, chicken, and sausage, and added porcini mushrooms and roasted potatoes. The food was absolutely delicious, appropriately priced, and the 4 euro house wine was not bad either! Upon departure, we were treated to limoncello, which was a nice way to end a great meal. When we received the bill, it had charged us 18 euros for the porcini mushrooms, but we saw 8 euros in our menu. When we shared this with the waiter, he went to find our menu and sure enough it said 8! He graciously aplogized and charged us 8 euros for the mushrooms. Our meal totaled 57 euros which we thought was more than reasonable! We would gladly come back to this restaurant on a future visit--the staff were so friendly and kind, delicious food, and beautiful decor. read more

First time in Rome. Didn't know where to go or where to eat. I took a stroll around the corner from my hotel and I found this gem. Let me start of by complimenting the chef! The food is bomb.com. Then you have friendly staff (I wont name any names, not that I know them all, just kidding, I know them all) they are fun and spirited and they make you feel welcome. Not welcome when you go to a restaurant and they want to provide a service, but welcome when you go to your friends house and they treat you like family. Located around the corner from the pantheon, the prices are good, the location is great, the food superb. I cannot rave enough about the staff. If ever in Rome, do as the Romans do and eat there. I was recommended this place by a close trusted Roman friend and decided to make it the venue of dinner for my last night in Rome. Coming from Singapore it wasn't immediately obvious to me that we were the only Asian ladies in the restaurant but I did notice the rest of the tables were Caucasians. First alarm bell: I overheard that there were specials while they were gathering the orders of the next table and stopped one of the servers to enquiry about them. I was given an annoyed looked and asked what did I want? The pasta? The meat? The fish? So instead of telling us what the specials were we had to ask him to tell us each one - it went something like this: What's the pasta please? Porcini tagliatelle with black truffle sauce. What's the meat please? Xxx This was quite strange to me - especially after I noticed that usually when people walk in they get the specials announced to them like all normal restaurants... Did we look like we couldn't appreciate or afford the specials? Alarm bell 2: As we sat there waiting to order - oh it was quite difficult to get their attention to order etc, which really wasn't a big deal to us. Alarm bell 3: Every new table that sat down for served proseco and orange juice for the kids immediately. We never got any but didn't care enough to ask. We got bread constantly pushed on us a few times - so they knew we were there they just chose to selectively serve welcome drinks. Eventually we accepted the bread and were told its was included in the meal - turns out it was £3 on the bill The meal: Best meal I've ever had in Rome, I'll not go into too much details but for us the main point was it wasn't as salty as everything else with eaten. There is a real respect for letting the flavor of the ingredients shine. We finished our meal and again took a while for anyone to notice we were done. Got the menu for dessert, and waited again to get it ordered. This place is small and can be a little cramped but trust me the wait was not due to lack of manpower. We finished dessert which was far too sweet which seems to be the Roman palate. Got the bill, put down my card and was asked? "Where is the tip? Am I paying in cash?" Sorry what did I just hear? I nodded in shock He went away to get the portable card machine. His colleague came by in 2 mins to flip open the billfold and saw my card with his eagle eyes and also noticed nothing wasn't written in the tip line: "No tip?" My friend quickly said "cash" Suddenly we were getting the most attention in the room from the servers they were all like culture dying to find out what that tip was. I was waiting for that lemonciello I saw them serve every leaving table before their bills! First guy returned with the machine . Stuck my Amex card in pushed some numbers and stared at the screen. "Oh we don't take Amex! Only visa and master" Looks like it wasn't worth paying attention to the card before putting it into the machine. Gave him another card and all well and we were asked again about the tip. Never have I had I seen such crude manners. We were left the billfold and there was even a discussion in front us when they kept checking if we left anything. We didnt. I would have felt obliged to tip if - 1) I got my specials announced at the start 2) served my welcome drink & lemonciello as it seems to be their practice for Caucasians 3) we did not have to wait for attention 4) we were not asked for it! I was still a little unsure if we should have left a tip but their parting remarks sealed the deal for this story to be shared here. The sparkling water served was flat, and we waitlisted over 20 minutes for someone to finally come and take our order. Invest your taste buds and money somewhere else. I came here with a colleague who says this is his go-to stop whenever he is in Rome. Because they knew him well, we were taken extra care of, which was appreciated. They gave us complimentary Prosecco when we walked in and we waited 15-20 minutes for a specific table that my co-worker especially wanted, no big deal at all, as I quickly made small chat with the staff there at the door (all of whom were very friendly and generous). When we finally sat down and ordered, I decided I just wanted a beer, while my college ordered some wine. For dinner I ordered bruschetta al pomodoro, which is my absolute favorite--just a simple slice of delicious bread with olive oil, fresh tomato and basil/oregano. For my main dish I took the classic Roman pasta dish, Tonnarelli Cacio e Pepe, which is a pasta similar to spaghetti with cheese and pepper. It's simple but lick-your-bowl-clean delicious! We finished the meal with limoncello--the perfect ending to any good Italian meal! Overall this dinner was a nice one, however it is located right near the Pantheon and on a heavy tourist traffic area side street, so I'm sure there are other more intimate (i.e. less tourists) "out-of-the-way" places to be found. But with that said, I did thoroughly enjoy myself here and the food and service was good--even with them being very busy! I would easily return when wanting a nice meal near some of the sites! You will eventually find yourself needing some nourishment and a cold drink while touring Rome over the course of any given day. When you're ready to stop there are usually a number of selections. We had certain criteria....wifi, nice antipasti and cold bear. This place fit the bill. We didn't have anything very fancy....a little antipasti, a small portion of pasta and some very cold beer. The beer was much needed on a warm Roman day early in June. Overall a satisfying stop but not overly memorable compared to some of the other wonderful meals we had in Rome. read more
