Had a lovely time at Ernest. We had a party of 6 and made a reservation in advance. This is my second time dining here and this time we ordered a la carte. We ate family style and ordered many plates so that we could all try a little bit of everything. My personal favorite was the shaved ice dessert, the flavors were refreshing. The restaurant itself is small, but nice to go with small parties or for a date. Our waiter was very friendly too and had good recommendations. Looking forward to the next time I am able to dine at Ernest!

Came here with a group of 6 adults & 1 baby and were lucky to be seated in the private dining room. It's a lovely space & plenty of room for the group we had. We made our reservation about a month ago on OpenTable & they do require a credit card to hold your reservation. They have a 48 hour cancellation policy at $50/person so pretty rigid. We typically do the "Let the Kitchen Cook for You" but decided to do à la carte this time because we had someone with a raw fish allergy. Favorites include the beef tartare dish, and the duck entree but you honestly can't go wrong. The desserts are a must (we got one of each - ice cream with hazelnut/chocolate, shaved ice & basque cheesecake). Service here was top notch. We were seated right away and Oscar was a fantastic server. Very attentive, love the crumbing in between meals & cutlery changes + beverage refills were frequent. Would highly recommend & will be back!

Ernest will always be our family's go-to celebration restaurant. We've been over 10 times and have never been disappointed. This most recent visit was one of the best, perhaps we can thank the new chef de cuisine! Vibes are always immaculate, the tucked away private room is perfect for big groups. Staff is always on top of the service! Food was delightful. The classics hit, and there were some new dishes like the banana bread caviar and asparagus that were lovely. My only minor critique is the cocktail list has never changed! I recommend ordering classic cocktails like whisky sours!

Recommend: - Parker house rolls - squid (a good calamari dish) - fried rice - changes seasonally, snap peas were crazy Also tried the asparagus and porcini, which were both very unique and complemented each other well. There was nothing in our meal that was bland or boring. A few dishes were a bit heavy on the salt, but overall very flavorful. the only meat options were lamb and duck - hoping to come back to try new items!! Service was great! Never had a problem getting any assistance. it's pretty LOUD in there though and the space is fairly big.

Had a great experience at Ernest. Everything was very tasty and the pacing was pretty spot on. The starters from the Raw Bar were all indulgently sumptuous. The Uni Toast had a decent portion of uni. The tuna tartare was solid and well balanced. The Sushi Rice provided a bit of extra substance The BBQ Shortrib was very nice and tender and even though the listed sauce is hoisin, the flavor itself came across as broadly American BBQ to me. The onion rings were a little oily but absolutely nothing else to complain about. The cheesecake was so good. The center was perfectly oozy and creamy and was a wonderful way to end the dinner.

Got treated here for a birthday. When we first came in the music was a little on the loud side but then they turned it down to more of a background music. Service was excellent. The staff came by regularly to clean fill our water glasses and clean our table. We tried the tasting menu and everything was fantastic. A couple of my favorites were the uni toast and Handroll. Definitely need to visit for the dining experience.

Ernest delivers a bold, American-style dining experience with a really exciting Asian influence that sets it apart from a lot of other spots in San Francisco. We went with the "let the kitchen decide" option, and it was absolutely the right call--it guaranteed we'd leave full (which we definitely did) and gave us a chance to try a wide range of dishes. Every plate that came out felt unique and packed with flavor. Nothing felt repetitive or safe--the menu really leans into creative combinations, and it works. The family-style format was perfect for our group of three, making it easy to share and experience everything together. Service was attentive throughout the meal, and the pacing felt just right. Overall, this is one of the more exciting and interesting restaurants in San Francisco right now. If you're looking for something a little different with big flavors and a fun dining experience, Ernest is absolutely worth checking out. I'd definitely come back.

All the items we got were so delicious. The menu can change weekly. Everyone on our table loved the banana bread, oysters, and the shaved ice dessert. My favorite item was the morel mushrooms either stuffed duck. The contrast of the shaved ice with melted marshmallow type paste on top was refreshing and the perfect ending to the meal.

Came here with 2 friends. The place looks like refurbished warehouse with great ceiling decor and lighting. The kitchen is open to see and lots of staff buzzing through. They offered 2 choices for tasting menu $99/139. We opted for $139. It was well worth it. I took photos of the menu on March 12, 2026 along with the variety of selections they brought. While everything was delicious, my favorites if I had to choose were: oysters and artichokes.

Not sure I understand the hype. I had a quick dinner at the bar, this restaurant is unfortunately not very solo diner friendly as their portions are quite large (except for the uni which was tiny) and so I wasnt able to try much. They also don't do the tasting menu for one person. I ordered several of the theoretical highlights: Ikura and tartare which I was pretty excited about but honestly, I don't get it. The ikura just overpowered the beef so you can barely know it's there. It was decent but not great Oyster was actually really delicious. Great toppings Uni toast... Overpriced and not special. Again good, but not great. Mushroom rice was pretty good but lacked flavor. Maybe their entrees were better but I didn't get there. I also tried to order dessert but the one I wanted was massive with no smaller option. Service was good at the bar, quick and attentive.

We managed to get a 5PM reservation on the day of - lucky! We do love a first seating, and the staff were so courteous and professional. Oscar answered our questions about the menu and we ended up doing the tasting. It's a lot of food - such great value! Come hungry. We especially loved the vegetable dishes the most, and I think that's high praise for any restaurant if they can elevate the humble broccoli or carrot. The pork and the sole were perfect; just the right amount of sauce and accompanied by very intentional accoutrements. I'll admit we were drawn to Ernest because I'm a sucker for kakigori but we didn't even end up ordering it because we were full. The dessert that came with the tasting was a great finishing touch, though I'd say I'm partial to the cheesecake more than the sundae. We will be back to reorder a couple of things and the kakigori!

Came here on a Thursday night for my husband and my anniversary. Our table ended up being ready early so when we arrived we were seated immediately. We found parking right in front of the restaurant. The restaurant is really nice when you walk in. The host offered to take my coat which I thought was a nice touch. We were seated in front of the kitchen which was cool, it reminded me of the bear lol but less chaotic ahha. Our service was SO quick and were so great. They included an anniversary card for us which I thought was super sweet. We ordered drinks to start. I ordered the alpine colada and my husband ordered the shiso gimlet. Both were amazing and not too sweet. Amazingly balanced. I may have liked my husbands drink a little bit more lol. We ordered: - Uni toast (2 orders) - madai sashimi - Parker house rolls - Koshihikari fried rice - bbq short rib - hazelnut sundae This was definitely enough for 2 people. The Uni toast was nice and buttery. The madai sashimi was perfectly citrusy The Parker house rolls were bomb and soft! Fried rice with the short rib and the pickled jalapeños combined were perfect combo. It was a perfect way to end the meal. Loved that it came with onion rings which were surprisingly spicy and yummy. I think the sundae was good definitely tasted like snickers but I think I would have like to try the shaved ice! Def would come back

We decided to keep things simple for a date night/celebration. Since my boyfriend isn't a big fan of uni and caviar, we went with the easier option--"let the kitchen cook for you." The service was nice--everything felt clean and well-organized, and the staff were attentive, friendly, and helpful with their suggestions. The dishes were fresh overall. We really enjoyed several of them, though there were a couple that just weren't quite to our taste.

    Kakkigori was superb!!

Any low sodium options for someone with high blood pressure?

I doubt it. All our dishes were over seasoned. I left with my lips wrinkled from all the salt.

Is this restaurant a good place for large groups, like parties of 14-18?

No, you could book them for an event though

If I get a gift card how much is a reasonable amount for 2 people?

I'd say if they both do the tasting menu then $200-250 atleasr but if you're thinking they'd just do an entree and an app and not go all out $100 would be generous, too.

How far in advance do reservations open up? Is there a specific time as well? I've been before and want to go again but I wasn't the one who booked previously. Thanks in advance!

Usually 2-4 weeks out is when it's beta to make a reservation. But I have called for a day of reservation.

Whats the difference between a lounge table vs dining table?

I think the lounge is the downstairs area by the bar. Dining table are all the regular seatings on the upper level.

Friendly for kids? Babies? We have a 9 month old but would love to come for an early dinner. Thanks!

when we were there, we saw a couple who brought their 1yo. The baby sat in a high chair and was entertained by their iPad. He seemed to enjoy watching the chefs cook

Not seeing a whole lot for vegetarians on the menu.... Will the kitchen make modifications to provide more vegetarian options?

yes, if u give them 48 hours notice

Hello... Are the tables spaced out and how is the air flow? Still being cautious.

It's pretty airy in there. If you reach your arm as far as possible, while seated, you still wouldn't touch a chair from another table. I felt pretty safe and I'm on the higher end of paranoid. Get the uni spoons! Enjoy :)

Can two guests walk in at 5:30 and get dinner on Thursday?

Eddy! Typically the only spot we have for guests without reservations is at the bar! The seats are first come first served and you can usually grab seats pretty easily on a Thursday until about 6pm. I hope this helps and we hope to see you soon!

For outdoor seating, are dogs allowed?

    Yes, they are.

How gluten free friendly is the menu?

If you want to really enjoy it you need to get the chef's menu, which includes glutenous items. You could navigate around it ala carte, but its not optimum in my opinion

How do you get a reservation? Everything is always booked online

You have to book EARLY- weeks in advance. set up a notification if it's booked because people cancel all the time. They have walkin but it's for a limited bar seating.

    Do you accept walk ins?

They have bar seating that is first come, first serve.

For the prices on this menu, I would expect service to be a lot better. We waited in line to be sat (no waiting list, just an old school line) and it took only 10 minutes or so to be sat but it was very bizarre, we were a party of 2 ready to be sat & she took the couple behind us and sat them first. No particular reasoning given. The host seemed to really not care about much. From there, service was odd. Our server didn't introduce herself and just asked us what we wanted. Again, not a necessity but you would think for somewhere you're paying $30+ per plate, service would be a bit better. An oyster holder was delivered to our table after we had already finished oysters. Glass was broken near our table and hastily swept up. Bussers were dropping silverware right next to our table. Again, just wasn't great ambiance or service. The food is good but there are other good restaurants in San Francisco. I would really only come here again with low service expectations.

I had called ahead to check on the foot traffic and to determine the best time to get there. As they open at 11:30, after speaking with someone over the phone the week before, my wife and I determined the best time to get there was 12:30pm, they don't take reservations for parties of 2. We arrived, saw they already had a wait but were on the list by 12:30pm. We were told the wait would be 30 minutes. No problem. We received the buzzer from them and walked around the block and ended up two restaurants down the street around 12:50pm. At 1:09pm, the buzzer still hadn't gone off and my wife, who went in initially to put us on the list, went back in to check on the status of our table. At the host stand, she heard the manager tell a woman who clearly didn't have a reservation she would be sat in 3 minutes. After hearing that, my wife showed the manager the buzzer we had been given and asked, "So how much longer for us?" The manager replied "It may be another 10 minutes." We then watched them scramble to clear a table and immediately give the table to the woman who had arrived after us. Upon this disappointment we decided to leave because if they can't get something simple like seating guests respectfully right, I can only imagine what else they'll screw up. People don't remember what you do... They remember how you made them feel. As a hospitality professional, not only was this experience totally unavoidable but it left me feeling disrespected and not valued - as a customer; as a person. In being honest, I have to mention that, oddly enough, as I looked around during this disappointment I noticed that everyone seated and being rapidly seated were of one particular ethnic group. Everyone waiting was part of various minority groups which made this incident even more sickening - reinforcing our decision to not only choose to spend our money somewhere else on that day, but to never spend any money there... EVER. I was extremely excited to visit this place and to be shown this kind of treatment further proves that there are still some places that don't want minority dollars so much they simply don't care how they treat you. And unfortunately for them, I'm certainly sharing this experience with as many visitors to the city as I can letting them know "There a MANY fine places to eat in the city... but I'll tell you where NOT to go - unless you feel like being treated like a second-class citizen." Please check in with your personal values before choosing to support this place. Sotto Mare... you all really need to invest in some cultural sensitivity training. It's 2026. Highly disappointed.

I had steamed mussels with fries. There were not enough mussels because they were huge and the sauce was more a broth and not at all flavorful enough. I usually love sopping up every last drop of the juice. But the really disappointing aspect of our dinner was the service. There were 3 people behind the service station. All of them need a training course on how to pay attention to paying customers. Instead they were all engrossed in private conversation with each other or with one particular customer. And one of the staff was simply intimidating, and very very loud. I suspected his behavior may have been chemically induced. Our waitress was very sweet, cheerful and helpful when we could catch her attention. But as I said a 15 minute training exercise each evening before starting work would work wonders. Like look around each customer every time you are not doing anything. And the more senior staff member was just uninterested and perhaps a little grumpy. So the food was blah, more flavor in the broth would help, and ok but at today's prices a "dinner out" has to be about more than just the food.
